Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis movies on TCM

Posted Mar. 15, 2016 at 10:31 AM

Stuck on the couch tonight? TimesReporter.com features editor Rex Huffman offers a variety of suggestions for TV viewing in his daily series:

Tune to Turner Classic Movies (seen on cable Channel 50) at 8 p.m. for the 1952 comedy "The Stooge," Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis mixture of sentimentality and belly laughs about a comic and his patsy. Also featured in the cast are Polly Bergen (as Mary), Marion Marshall, Eddie Mayehoff, Richard Erdman, and Frances Bavier. Bavier would go on to become a TV legend eight years later when she made her debut as Aunt Bee in "The Andy Griffith Show." She appeared in the show throughout its eight-year run, winning an Emmy Award in 1967 as best supporting actress in a comedy series. "The Stooge" was directed by Norman Taurog.

A second Martin and Lewis comedy, "The Caddy" from 1953, follows at 10 p.m. on TCM (cable Channel 50). In this film, the world of professional golf gets the Martin and Lewis treatment. Jerry Lewis plays Harvey Miller, who has all the tools to be a great professional golfe. Unfortunately, he has one big problem: he comes totally unglued in front of a gallery. Knowing he'll never be able to play the tour himself, Harvey teaches everything he knows to debonair Joe Anthony (Dean Martin), acting as his protege's caddy when he enters a big tournament. However, crowds still transform Harvey into a nervous wreck, and as Joe's game improves and his head swells, he begins to see his "caddy" as a liability. Martin sings several tunes, and they duet on the Oscar nominated song "That's Amore." Numerous real-life professional golfers also make cameo appearances, including Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, and Julius Boros.
