Hearing Dean Martin singing "Volare".....it's something a little special.

David Szondy
Hey pallies, likes the noteworthy news that our most beloved Dino's classic croon, "Volare" was swankly selected as "the first radio transmission and reception using lasers" at Harvard University is bein' powerfully proclaimed in likes terrifically tons of supreme sites all over the world wide web.
Now we ain't plannin' on sharin' each and every one of 'em with all youse Dino-holics, but likes today we couldn't resist givin' youse 'nother excellent example of the wonderful ways that this  delightful Dino-occurrence is makin' the scene on technology sites.

From the 'net space of "NEW ATLAS" which says 'bout it's mission that it  "has been celebrating innovation and human endeavor since our first website launched on March 1, 2002."  "Initially called Gizmag, we changed our name to New Atlas in 2016 to better reflect what we do. An atlas is a collection of maps, and maps are the tools we use to explore and define new frontiers. That's our mission at New Atlas: we want to trace the development of extraordinary ideas that move the world forward"

Likes as we read these incredible introductory remarks, we can't help but competely  celebrate how our awesomely amazin' Dino himself explored and defined new frontiers through his life, his times, and his teachin's as well....truly a rare remarkable renaissance man of extraordinary gifts.

So how fabulously fittin' is it that Mr. David Szondy (pictured above) sez in his remarkable report that "Hearing Dean Martin singing "Volare" on the radio may not seem that earthshaking, but when it's the first radio transmission and reception using lasers, it's something a little special."

We, of course, would sez that our Dino is something very very very special!!!!!  We thanks the pallies at "NEW ATLAS" for lovin'ly liftin' up the name of our Dino and through Szondy's wise words learnin' how our Dino has been coolly chosen as the first voice to be transmitted usin' lasers to generate radio signals.  And thinks pallies of what is Dino-first will do for welcomin' so so many more pallies in our Dino's wonderful world!  To checks this out in it's original source, likes simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-message.  And, of course, we just have to offer 'nother youtube vid of our Dino croonin' "Volare" from an episode of "The Hollywood Palace" that he was hostin'

World's first laser radio transmitter/receiver paves way for ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi

David Szondy

New technology uses lasers to generate radio signals

Researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have, for the first time, used a semiconductor laser to send and receive radio signals. The hybrid electronic-photonic device uses a laser to extract and transmit microwave signals, providing a data rate that may one day lead to ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi.

Hearing Dean Martin singing "Volare" on the radio may not seem that earthshaking, but when it's the first radio transmission and reception using lasers, it's something a little special. According to the team behind the new technology, the laser not only emitted microwaves wirelessly, but also modulated them and received outside radio signals.

Working on previous research by the team in 2017 and 2018, the laser radio works by means of an infrared laser frequency comb. A garden variety laser generates light at a single frequency, much like a violin playing a precise note as opposed to a white noise generator spewing out the whole spectrum of sound. In a frequency comb, the laser produces multiple beams at multiple frequencies that are evenly spaced apart like the teeth of a comb, hence the term.

The laser uses different frequencies of light beating together to generate microwave radiation

In 2018, the SEAS team found that the light "teeth" of the laser comb could be made to resonate against one another, causing the electrons in the cavity of the laser to oscillate at microwave frequencies in the radio band of the spectrum. In the top electrode of the device, there's an etched slot that acts as a dipole antenna, like the rabbit ears on an old-fashioned analog television.

By modulating the comb, the team was able to encode data on the microwave emission. This was then transmitted by the antenna to its reception point, where it was picked up by a horn antenna before being filtered and decoded by a computer. In addition, the laser technology could also receive radio signals, and the laser's behavior could be controlled remotely using microwaves from a second device.

"This all-in-one, integrated device, holds great promise for wireless communication," says Marco Piccardo, a postdoctoral fellow at SEAS. "While the dream of terahertz wireless communication is still a ways away, this research provides a clear roadmap showing how to get there."

The research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Sad Music [32] – Dean Martin – Return to me

February 9, 2007 by Rudy Roth

Dean Martin - Return to me

Return to me is not the biggest and perhaps the sadest hit he offered to the world, Dean Martin , an actor and musician who lived his life at what we could call the narrow edge between Baha's euphoria and physical resistance . Enjoying tremendous success both in movies, on television and on stage, Dean Martin was an idol of his generation, being perceived as a kind of " quintessence of the cool idea ."

Member of the legendary band Rat Pack , had an alcohol-dominated life, roads and reflectors, detachment and serenity. Along with Frank Sinatra , Sammy Davis Jr . and some others chosen to breathe the rare air of success , Martin , remained one of the most distant stars on Hollywood's stature, as did his biographer, Nick Tosches , or how they would emphasize friends, exactly what the Italians call menefreghista - "the man who just falsely ..."

Return to me is a tandre song, almost durable through the discretion of the melodic line, almost passionate through that " kai me amo " placed among the lyrics. It seems, now, in the 21st century, a call from other times, at a time when love was not just a strand of books, and in which eagerness is laid, though late, at the feet of love.

Muzica trista[32] – Dean Martin – Return to me

februarie 9, 2007 by Rudy Roth

Dean Martin – Return to me

Ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi breakthrough

For the first time, researchers transmit sound data via a semiconductor laser
BY Leah Burrows
SEAS Communications

April 25, 2019

You’ve never heard Dean Martin like this.

This recording of Martin’s classic “Volare” was transmitted wirelessly via a semiconductor laser — the first time a laser has been used as a radio frequency transmitter.

In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) demonstrated a laser that can emit microwaves wirelessly, modulate them, and receive external radio frequency signals.

“The research opens the door to new types of hybrid electronic-photonic devices and is the first step toward ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi,” said Federico Capasso, the Robert L. Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Engineering at SEAS and senior author of the study.

This research builds off previous work from the Capasso Lab. In 2017, the researchers discovered that an infrared-frequency comb in a quantum cascade laser could be used to generate terahertz frequencies, the submillimeter wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that could move data hundreds of times faster than today’s wireless. In 2018, the team found that quantum cascade laser frequency combs could also act as integrated transmitters or receivers to efficiently encode information.

The song “Volare” by Dean Martin is transmitted via a laser frequency comb, the first time a laser has been used as a radio transmitter.

Now, the researchers have figured out a way to extract and transmit wireless signals from laser frequency combs.

Unlike conventional lasers, which emit a single frequency of light, laser frequency combs emit multiple frequencies simultaneously, evenly spaced to resemble the teeth of a comb. In 2018, the researchers discovered that inside the laser, the different frequencies of light beat together to generate microwave radiation. The light inside the cavity of the laser caused electrons to oscillate at microwave frequencies — which are within the communications spectrum.

“If you want to use this device for Wi-Fi, you need to be able to put useful information in the microwave signals and extract that information from the device,” said Marco Piccardo, a postdoctoral fellow at SEAS and first author of the paper.

This device uses a frequency comb laser to emit and modulate microwaves wirelessly. The laser uses different frequencies of light beating together to generate microwave radiation.

The first thing the new device needed to transmit microwave signals was an antenna — so the researchers etched a gap into the top electrode of the device, creating a dipole antenna (like the rabbit ears on the top of an old TV). Next, they modulated the frequency comb to encode information on the microwave radiation created by the beating light of the comb. Then, using the antenna, the microwaves containing the encoded information radiate out from the device. The radio signal is received by a horn antenna, filtered, and sent to a computer.

The researchers also demonstrated that the laser radio could receive signals. The team was able to remotely control the behavior of the laser using microwave signals from another device.

“This all-in-one, integrated device holds great promise for wireless communication,” said Piccardo. “While the dream of terahertz wireless communication is still a ways away, this research provides a clear roadmap showing how to get there.”

The Harvard Office of Technology Development has protected the intellectual property relating to this project and is exploring commercialization opportunities.

This research was co-authored by Michele Tamagnone, Benedikt Schwarz, Paul Chevalier, Noah A. Rubin, Yongrui Wang, Christine A. Wang, Michael K. Connors, Daniel McNulty and Alexey Belyanin. It was supported in part by the National Science Foundation.

Dear Paisà Dean Martin, a bad boy, a slipper and a generous womanizer

Between movies and songs, wives and lovers, whiskey and mafia, the brilliant life of a loyal man

 -Dom, 22/01/2017 - 11:19
And now «zi 'Dean», the son of Gaetano «lu barbiere» who in the early twenties left the placid Abruzzo to make his way to America, relives at the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. Where, from 19 to 25 February, will be the tribute to the centenary of Dean Martin, "the king of cool" to whom the twelfth edition of "Los Angeles, Italy - Film, Fashion and Art Fest" dedicates a series of events , in the week before the Oscar award.
«An authentic legend of the show, for talent and charm. One of the greatest Italian-American stars of all time, who picked up his first hits interpreting classic Neapolitan songs, "explains Pascal Vicedomini, producer of the festival. It is no coincidence that That's Amore, the best-known song of the artist born in Ohio, in Steubenville, on 7 June 1917 as Dino Paul Crocetti, will be the soundtrack of the kermesse. Between "bella vita" and "tarandella", which rhymes with "mozerella", in the typical style of the crooner with a velvet voice, a sense of other, more naive times emerges, when the American dream touched the Adriatic.
Looking at that sea from Montesilvano, near Pescara, the young Gaetano Crocetti, who had a job in his hands, thought of his brother Giuseppe, who had emigrated to New York: he had sent him 25 dollars and a third class ticket for reach it in the New World. His cardboard suitcase was immediately filled with the few personal effects: from the poor, a shirt is enough. Once in the States, transhumance began from one city to another, always following the red thread of the villagers. In Steubenville, a quiet town where Gaetano becomes Guy, lives Angela Barra, a native of Campania, married in 1914 and quickly mother of Dino and Bill. At home there was talk of close montesilvanese and Dino, up to five years, did not know a word of English. Between distress and savings, childhood did not last long and, with adolescence, the first jobs, various and precarious, arrived: shoeshine, shop assistant in a supermarket, amateur boxer with the pseudonym Kid Crochet, ready to perform in hotel rooms; gas station, taxi driver and, finally, croupier at the casino tables.
Here begin the illegal affairs of Dino, not even sixteen and already involved in lotteries, games of chance and traffic of whiskey on behalf of the Rizzo brothers: it is the era of prohibition and a boy awake as he knows how to move. The contiguity with the world of nightclubs, however, will bring him his debut as a singer: Dino Martini, a surname taken from the tenor Nino Martini, sports a sensual voice that has a touch of mystery. Twenty-three years old, Sammy Watkins notes him, ready to put him under contract with his orchestra, in Cleveland. Meanwhile, other singers of Italian origin, such as Frank Sinatra, Mario Lanza, Perry Como and Vic Damone, emerge from nowhere to go and fill every box of nascent mass entertainment.
Without being beautiful, Dean Martin, the only Italian-American star to have three stars dedicated to the "Walk of Fame", liked women. The eternal smile, the sly and unprepared air, the tuxedo sewn on like a second skin, looked like a gentleman available at every revelry. But he was also capable of loyalty to the feminine universe, as when in 1962 he stuck with Fox because Marilyn Monroe, at the end of his career, now alcoholic and sedative, was not replaced by Lee Remick in Something's Got to Give, directed by George Cukor. Perhaps because of his friendship with Peter Lawford, Kennedy brothers' paraninfo, Joe Di Maggio did not want Dean at Marilyn's funeral ... Married three times with Elizabeth Anne McDonald, in 1941, with Jeanne Biegger and with Catherine Mae Hawn, in 1973 Martin had eight children. "I am a father of eight children. Around me you will hear three words: Hello, goodbye and I'm pregnant, "he joked.
Apparently simple, the man was actually introverted and complex: not by chance he loved golf, solitary sport. He loved old westerns and hated parties and elevators, as a genuine claustrophobic. When his wife Jeanne gave a party, in his opinion too noisy, Dean called the police to stop the noise. Yet, as a member of the "Rat Pack" (association of rats), an association between pleasure-loving millionaires to which Sinatra belonged, Sammy Davis jr. and Peter Lawford, also immortalized in the film Big Shot (1960), Dean was a bad boy, between the fifties and the sixties, when he was rebelling against the conformism of the Eisenhower era. The period in which he began his career as a soloist, at the cinema, after the abrupt break with Jerry Lewis: from the young lions to A dollar honor, up to Airport (1970), the successes are not counted. Nor is the TV, with The Dean Martin Show and other lucky appearances. Although the cinema gave him enormous satisfactions, making him work alongside Anita Ekberg, Kim Novak, Shirley McLaine, the real success he had in the music field. He, who had sung the most beautiful Christmas songs, will die in solitude, of lung cancer, just December 25, 1995. Like his mother Angela, who also died on Christmas Day 1966.
On Dean's grave, at Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles, it says: "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime", "Everyone loves someone, someday."

Caro paisà Dean Martin bad boy pantofolaio e donnaiolo generoso

Intorno a me sentirete tre parole: Ciao, addio e sono incinta», scherzava.

Né manca la tv, con The Dean Martin Show e altre fortunate apparizioni.
