Martin looks and sounds good

Hey pallies, likes one of the beautiful benefits of searchin' the ol' 'net far and wide for Dino-devotion to shares with all youse Dino-philes is bein' introduced to interestin' pallies from all walks of life who share a common bond of sharin' 'bout our main man, Dino.  Today we visit with Mr. Andy Wolverton, whose bio tells us that he "has worked as a band director, a bookseller, a food demonstrator (which is not nearly as exciting as it sounds), and currently works as a librarian in the Anne Arundel County (Maryland) Public Library system."

Mr. Wolverton hangs his hat at his blog "JOURNEYS IN DARKNESS AND LIGHT - Explorations in film and comics," where recently he reviews numero duo of the Martin and Lewis silver screen comedies, "My Friend Irma Goes West."   In reviewin' a few of his previous posts we discovered that part of the "loot" that Andy got for Christmas 2015 was The Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection Vol. 1, and so it seems natural that he would share his thoughts with his readership as he watches these classics.

While he was not much impressed with the first "Irma" as you can read if  you click on the link he provides below, Mr. Wolverton finds much more to enjoy in this sequel 'cause, as he sez, "it’s shorter and features much more of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis."  That's certainly music to all Dino-holics ears!  Well, we ain't gonna trys and takes any glory 'way from Andy's review, we'' just say that we enjoy his cool choices of pix and prose to accent this early Dino-effort.

We encourages you all to enjoy Mr. Andy Wolverton exploration of "My Friend Irma Goes West", we sez our thanks to him for his energetic efforts, and we hopes to find more reviews of Martin & Lewis flicks at his blog pad in the near Dino-future!  To checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.

My Friend Irma Goes West(1950) Hal Walker

My Friend Irma Goes West (1950) Hal Walker
Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection Vol. 1 DVD (1:31)
My Friend Irma Goes West is more enjoyable than its predecessorMy Friend Irma (1949) in that it’s shorter and features much more of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. It’s a bit embarrassing that ditzy Irma (Marie Wilson) is relegated to a supporting role in her own movie, but producers Cy Howard and Hal Wallis recognized that Martin and Lewis were clearly on the rise. Giving them more screen time was a no-brainer even Irma could figure out (eventually).
marie-wilson-cathy-lewis-my-friend-irma-otrcat.com
If you missed the first film, you should first know that My Friend Irma was originally a popular radio show, also starring Marie Wilson (above left) as the scatterbrained Irma. The radio show ran from 1947 to 1954, spawning not only two movies, but also a comic strip, a comic book, and a television show. So when the 1949 film was released, Irma was a character already well-established.
myfriendirma-lobbycard
The first film dealt with the adventures of Irma, her get-rich-quick-scheming boyfriend Al (John Lund), and Irma’s roommate Jane (Diana Lynn), who’s looking to marry a rich, good-looking man. When Al meets Steve Laird (Dean Martin) running an orange-juice stand with his buddy Seymour (Jerry Lewis), he learns that Steve is a singer. After hearing Steve sing, Al offers to become Steve’s manager and make him rich.
I discussed the first film briefly here. It’s light, silly and harmless, but is mainly important for being the first movie pairing of Martin and Lewis, which would become a major franchise. Their screen time was limited, but their talent was clear from the moment My Friend Irma was released, so another film was quickly made, this time focusing on Martin and Lewis rather than Irma.
yvonne2
In My Friend Irma Goes West, Steve lands an appearance singing on a local New York television show. Still managing Steve, Al is confident the show will draw the attention of a big talent scout, which it does. It also draws the attention of the show’s co-star, French singer Yvonne Yvonne (Corrine Calvet, above right), who has eyes for Steve, a prospect Steve’s fiancee Jane is not too happy about.
myfriendirmagoeswest-chimpanzee
When a movie studio executive offers Steve a contract and agrees to send the whole entourage to California, everyone literally jumps onboard, but that’s when the real shenanigans begin which involve gangsters, a chimp, a crooked casino owner, and more. Martin looks and sounds good (although I’ve never cared for his material), Lewis gets to do more of his thing, and Irma even gets a few laughs in her own movie. My Friend Imra Goes West made it obvious that Martin and Lewis had to be headliners from here on out, which they were. The film is enjoyable, but mainly interesting in that it shows the duo taking a major step forward.

DEAN MARTIN, THE COOLEST GUY IN THE WORLD

POSTED BY DIANA JUL - 19 - 2018

In his heyday, the late 1950s and then the glittering 1960s, no one could beat Dean Martin. He was a film star, had a hit television show, had been crowned the king of nightclubs, and formed one half of the history of show business’ most popular comedy duo. His friends were the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, and even Marilyn Monroe. His records were selling in their millions, but his passion lay in a far more prosaic are of life: Golf. Martin was a complicated man, to say the least.

The next time you’re playing the best online pokies Australia at home or on the go and one of his beloved classics comes on, you’ll be able to appreciate it a little more with these facts at your disposal!

He Only Started Speaking English at Five-Years Old

Martin’s family was Italian through and through, and he only started learning to speak English when he was five.

He Changed His Name Not Once, But Twice

Born Dino Paul Crocetti, when he first started out in show business he did so under the name Dino Martini. There was a singer around at the time called Nino Martini, and so Martin took the name we all know him by to differentiate himself from the popular vocalist.

He Loathed the Films He Did With Lewis

Although Martin went on to appear in 16 very funny films alongside his partner, Jerry Lewis, he stated that he detested each one. He explained that this was because they were, essentially, Jerry Lewis films, and Martin’s role was simply that of the idiot.

He Was Not Big On Parties

Although he had the image of a man-about-town, Martin was not fond of parties. He said this was because he was shy, and also thanks to being embarrassed about the way he spoke. He disliked get-togethers so much, actually, that he once called the police on one his own wife was hosting!

Jeannie, Martin’s spouse, had thrown a party at the mansion the couple owned in Beverly Hills. Martin holed up in his room to watch TV instead, as was his habit. As the party grew louder, Martin called the local police station, pretending to be a neighbour irritated with the noise from the festivities. The police duly arrived and broke up the celebrations!

He Got US$34 Million for Not Rehearsing

In 1968, Martin signed the largest contract in the history of show business agreements. He agreed to a three-year contract for US$34 million for three more series of his hit television show. But it was a unique contract.

Martin greatly disliked rehearsing, and so his contract said that he would not have to do so during the week. A stand-in would take his place for the dry runs, while Martin played his golf games from Monday through to Thursday. He would look over his lines during this time as well, but most of his time was spent on the course. Then, on Fridays, he would show up and get the taping done.

That came after Blouin quoted Dean Martin.....

Hey pallies, likes today we are deeply delighted to proudly place the awesome accent on our one our most most beloved Dino's teachin's.  From the amazin' annals of the online presence of the rag "SAINT ALBAN'S MESSENGER (VT.), comes a sweet story 'bout local Mr. Norm Blouin who will turned the big 90 on May 27.

In a touchin' 'n tender tribute on Mr. Blouin tagged  "Feeling good 90 years in: Blouin celebrates birthday" scribed by newspaper staffer Mr. Tom Benton (pictured on the right) we truly truly deeply delighted to see that this Nonagenarian coolly chose to quote none other then our main man Dino, who as all youse Dino-philes will read below potently proclaimed on his 70th birthday that, “If I’d known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”

Likes ain't it the coolest that the wonderful wit and wisdom of our tremendous teacher Dino continues to be lively lifted up after more then two decades of his departure from our planet?!?!?!?!?  We absolutely applaud birthday boy Norm for speakin' this Dino-truth to scriber Mr. Tom Benton and for all the pallies at the "SAINT ALBAN'S MESSENGER" for gettin' it into print.  To checks this out in it's original source and to read this potent prose in total, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-report.

Feeling good 90 years in: Blouin celebrates birthday

Norm Blouin, reclining in his home days before his 90th birthday. (TOM BENTON, Messenger Staff)
ST. ALBANS CITY — People like to say they’ve been around a time or two. If that’s the case, Norm Blouin has been around three or four times, at least.

Blouin turns 90 years old on May 27. But you’d never know it to meet him.

He rises to shake a hand, despite his age. The smile never leaves his face, just simmers down to a happy grin.

“I must have taken myself seriously,” Blouin said, with that grin. “Because I’m still here.”

That came after Blouin quoted Dean Martin, a line the King of Cool dropped upon turning 70: “If I’d known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”

Blouin said, “If I’d known I’d be 90, I would have taken better care of myself.”

Working with Dean Martin was a lot of fun.

Hey pallies, likes we find it always so so remarkably refreshin' and richly rewardin' to share with all youse Dino-holics 'nother of our most beloved Dino's contemporaries once 'gain sharin' their deep deep delight in the blessed bliss of havin' the opportunity to work 'long side him.  Likes recently our pallies at google Dino-'lerts sent us over the online presence of "THRIVE GLOBAL," whose "mission and passion" is to "create something real and tangible that would help individuals, companies and communities improve their well-being and performance and unlock their greatest potential."

Likes the powerful post that a google Dino-lert sent us to is an incredible interview that Mr. Yitzi Weiner, (pictured on the right)  "a journalist, author, and the founder Authority Magazine" conducted with awesome actress Miss Tina Louise.  The perfect prose is tagged "Hollywood Icon Tina Louise, ‘Ginger’ from Gilligan’s Island, on why it’s so important to involve yourself with volunteer work, to keep peace of mind and your head on straight."  In answerin' one of Mr. Weiner's quires Miss Louise sweetly spoke of her amazin' appreciato in havin' opportunities to work professionally with our main man.
That portion of the interview is shared below.

It always wonderfully warms our Dino-hearts to hear just how much fantastic fun other entertainers had bein' the the powerful presence of our Dino and we are totally touched each and every time to be able to share these potent pieces of Dino-adulation whenever they come 'cross our path.  We thanks Mr. Yitzi Weiner and all the pallies at "THRIVE GLOBAL" for sharin' this Q 'n A with Miss Tina Louise as well as thankin' Miss Louise for sharin' her delightful Dino-remembrances with the world.

And, pallies, likes searchin' the annals of youtube we were able to find just one clip from "The Wrecking Crew" where our one and only Dino is introduced to Miss Louise on film as Miss Lola Medina.  We shares that vibrant vid with youse below and know that we will continue to search for other vid clips that show the coolest of cool chemistry between our Dino and Miss Louise.

Likes pallies, how sweetly stellar it is that this prose 'bout Miss Tina Louise's deep deep Dino-light in workin' with our most beloved Dino popped up on the ol' world wide web just a few before the 'net has lit up with the neatest of news of the big screen epic "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" that as we shared on Thursday last  Dino-week has the coolest of cool connect with "The Wrecking Crew" as well....see ilovedinomartin post  HERE.

Tina: No, I don’t. I mean, I’ve worked with some funny guys, you know, but, I can’t think of anything like that. Working with Dean Martin was a lot of fun. I was in a movie with him and Sharon Tate called The Wrecking Crew . It was her last movie. Dean Martin and I did a special. I was the only girl on a special that he did and then I was in that film with him. He’s a really sweet guy.

Hey pallies, likes we gotta 'fess up that we have planned a different Dino-gram for this very Dino-day here at ilovedinomartin, but likes when we opened our email account a few 'go we spied a google Dino-lert that has sent us in a different Dino-direction this start of the Memorial Day weekend.

Dudes rule Memorial Day TV

By Robert Rorke May 24, 2019

Memorial Day is almost always an occasion for the networks to trot out those World War II chestnuts. Programmers got a little frisky this year, digging deep into film history for some unusual movies. For those who can’t get through this day without seeing Tom Hanks embody American values, there’s always “Saving Private Ryan.” Here are some notable shows and movies to watch during the holiday.

The Young Lions

11 a.m., TCM

Three men experience combat in WWII. One is a German who becomes disillusioned with Nazism, one is an American entertainer who ends up being drafted and the third is a sensitive Jewish-American who discovers anti-Semitism from his own comrades. Starring Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and Dean Martin.

On This Day In Dino-history: May 24, 1974

From the pallies at the historical pad "Famous Daily" comes the reminder that it was on this very day, May 24 in the year of our Dino 1974 that the last episode of the Dean Martin Variety Show was broadcast over the peacock network.

From the pen of Mr. Gary Satanovsky comes the remembrance that after a stunnin' 9 year run, with the very impressive number of 264 episodes aired, the greatest show in all of television history came to a close.   ilovedinomartin appreciates Mr. Gary Satanovsky and the pallies at "Famous Daily" for remindin' all us Dino-holics of this hugely historic day in the life and times of our great man. Last episode of Dean Martin show

by Gary Satanovsky on May 24, 2012

Dean Martin’s early performances were decent but not great, his crooner style singing unable to escape the shadows of Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. So Martin decided to turn to comedy. His first show, teaming up with a young comic, Jerry Lewis, ran through a series of completely improvised routines. Some were vaudeville classics, some taken out of thin air, and all had the audience howling in laughter. Martin made a name for himself with Lewis, but always thought of himself as a solo actor, and parlayed his considerable fame into a fruitful career in television.

On this day, May 24, 1974, after a nine-year and 264-episode run the hugely popular Dean Martin Show broadcast its last episode.

Of all the acts hosted by Dean Martin, perhaps the most enduring was of the singing and dancing troupe The Goldiggers. Martin’s show was their first television appearance, and he liked them well enough to work their routines into this Vegas stage acts and give them his television spot during his the summer recess months. The Goldiggers were one of the acts that appeared on his last episode, paying their respects to the man that got them into show business.

Hey pallies, likes yester-Dino-day we introduced you 'nother of today's Dino-diggin' youth, Mr. Gio Orlando via his  youtube vid presentation on two  Dino-al-b-ums.   Gio's viral vid is tagged  " Dean Martin Oddities - The Pickwick Albums."  Likes watchin' Orlando powerfully pontificate on these

“SOMETHING’S GOT TO GIVE” (1962)

Directed by George Cukor

Film No. 52 of 2019 - I would have liked to see the full version of this, but sadly, due to the death of Marilyn Monroe, it was never fininshed. I would suggest watching the existing 40 minutes, however. Now, logically, I would watch something like My Bloody Valentine today. But why, why would I do that? Better question is why wouldn’t I. Well, I was feeling romantic (for one reason or another)
Also Dean Martin is still awesome I love that man.

Dean Martin

Dean Martin (born June 7, 1917 as Dino Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio, † December 25, 1995 in Beverly Hills, California) was an American singer, actor and entertainer of Italian descent. Martin became internationally known after the Second World War through his ten-year collaboration with comedian Jerry Lewis. After the dissolution of Martin & Lewis , Martin established himself as a solo artist on stage, on the screen and on television. He appeared regularly in Las Vegas until 1991, sang world hits like Memories Are Made of This and Everybody Loves Somebody (Sometime), and made more than 50 feature films, including Rio Bravo and Kiss Me, Fool, For a decade he presented on television the Dean Martin Show , which made him at the time the highest paid entertainer in the world. Together with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis jr. and some other artists he was in the 1960s, the so-called Rat Pack attributed. Because of his relaxed performances, he was considered King of Cool .

biography

Childhood and early years
Martin's father was the farm worker Gaetano Crocetti (1894-1967), born in Montesilvano, Italy, who emigrated to the United States in 1913, just as his brother had a few years before. Gaetano Crocetti, who became known as Guy from 1914, settled in the industrial town of Steubenville in the US Rust Belt and opened a hairdressing salon. Martin's mother was the Ohio-born Italian-born Angela "Angelina" Barr, b. Barra (1897-1966). They married in October 1914. One and a half years later, Guglielmo (later called William or Bill, 1916-1968) gave birth to her first child, and a year later on June 7, 1917 Dino was prematurely born as a second son.

Dino said he spoke only Italian until his fifth birthday; In retrospect, he called this a "Abruzzian dialect". At first he was having a hard time at school with English as a second language, leaving Wells High School , which he had previously visited only occasionally, after the tenth grade. The difficulties with the English language continued until he received language instruction from his first wife "Betty" in the early 1940s.

As a teenager, Martin went to different jobs. Among other things, he was a worker in one of Steubenville's steel mills, a milkman and a supermarket salesman. Temporarily he entered under the name "Kid Crochet" as a welterweight price welder. Martin repeatedly came into contact with Cosa Nostra , the local manifestation of organized crime. During Prohibition he helped with alcohol smuggling, and from 1936 he worked as a dealer (croupier) in an illegal casino in his hometown. He often sang aloud at the croupier table and was suggested by friends to earn money singing.

After some amateur appearances in the 1930s, Martin's career began in the fall of 1939 as a professional entertainer. It ended after 52 years with his last stage appearance in Las Vegas.

Dino - Dean - Crocetti - Martini - Martin : Change of name
Martin's baptismal name was Dino Crocetti; he did not have a middle name at first. Only on the occasion of his first communion in 1928, he received the second name Paul, with which his later stage partner Jerry Lewis preferred to address him.

In the early years of his artistic career Martin performed under his birth name Dino Crocetti. Prior to a commitment in Cleveland gave him the band leader Ernie McKay in November 1939 the stage name Dino Martini, which should not - as occasionally indicated - the cocktail of the same name, but the then popular Italian opera tenor Nino Martini should remember. In November of the following year, it was at the behest of the bandleader Samuel "Sammy" Watkins the Americanized version Dean Martin, which he already officially made his name before the birth of his first child in 1942.

family

Dean Martin was married three times and had seven biological children, five of whom were at least temporarily also in show business footing. His family also included actor and entertainer Leonard "Bananas" Barr. He was the younger brother of Martin's mother.

Marriages and partnerships

Dean Martin's first wife was Elizabeth Anne "Betty" Martin, b. McDonald (* 1923, † 1989). The 1941 closed marriage was divorced in 1949. Two days after the divorce, Martin married the Florida-born Dorothy Jane "Jeanne" (also: "Jeannie") Biegger (born March 27, 1927, † August 24, 2016). In the 1950s they lived several times for short periods in separation, in 1973 they divorced. During the marriage with Jeanne Martin had numerous affairs, including with Pier Angeli, later with the beauty queen Gail Renshaw, the actress Phyllis Davis and Bing Crosby's daughter in law Peggy Crosby. In 1973, Martin married Catherine "Kathy" Hawn, who divorced three years later. Martin has been living with his second wife Jeanne since the 1980s, but without formally closing the marriage again. Jeanne Martin died at the age of 89 in August 2016, two weeks after her son Ricci.

children

The marriage to Betty produced four children:

Stephen Craig (b. 1942),
Claudia (born March 16, 1944, † 2001); she has been playing in numerous television series and occasionally in feature films since childhood.
Barbara Gail (* 1945) and
Deana (* 1948 as Dina Martin); she has been working as a singer and entertainer since the late 1960s.
Martin had three children with his second wife Jeanne:

Dean Paul (born November 17, 1951, † March 21, 1987); he founded the beat band Dino, Desi & Billy in the mid-1960s and later appeared as an actor. He was considered Martin's favorite son and died in 1987 in a plane crash.
Ricci James (born September 20, 1953, † August 6, 2016); He was a music producer and entertainer, co-producer of his father's last three studio albums, and wrote a biography of him in 2002.
Gina (* 1956).

In 1957 Martin was given sole custody of the four children from his first marriage, which until then had had their mother Betty. From 1957, they lived in a shared household with his second family in Beverly Hills. Martin tried to stop the children's contact with Betty, who had developed heavy alcohol dependence in the 1950s.

Finally, Kathy Hawn brought a daughter from a previous relationship into the marriage, who was adopted by Martin.

personal

Notwithstanding his jovial public appearance, Martin was personally considered extremely closed. Even as a child, he often retired. Later companions and members of his family agreed that he was "self-sufficient" and not interested in communication; he did not express his personal thoughts even in a private environment. A biographer called him Incommunicado, Jerry Lewis spoke of a wall Martin had built around his interior. Martin declined the invitation of a film producer to get to know each other better during a meal together. "Nobody meets me." Martin's wife Jeanne complained that she too had failed to penetrate the facade: "I do not know him." He is "either the most complicated person in the world or the simplest." Martin's biographer Nick Tosches attributes this lunacy (Italian lontananza ) to age-old Italian patterns of behavior experienced and adopted by Martin as a teenager in Steubenville during his contacts with members of organized crime ,

Martin was "not a man who liked to be with others" (Daniel Mann); he always wanted to be alone (Jerry Lewis). Martin had no close friends. The most intense relationship of trust was with Mack "Killer" Gray, a former boxing manager and occasional actor who was his assistant and factotum for nearly 30 years from 1952. In addition, the copywriter Sammy Cahn, the actor Stewart Granger and Frank Sinatra were to be expected to Martins closer environment, the latter relationship was kept mainly by Sinatra alive.

Martin found sympathy especially for broken characters; His daughter Deana speaks in this respect of "Underdogs." To Marilyn Monroe, with whom he 1962 on the - not finished - film Something's Got to Giveworked, he felt personally attracted regardless of professional differences. He described her after her death as a "wonderful girl" and refused to comment on her lifestyle or to participate in speculation about the causes of her death. The mentally unstable and drug-dependent actor Montgomery Clift, who in turn admired Martin, he supported in his difficult life stages. When Clift became the subject of critical reporting for his homosexuality and unstable health, Martin repeatedly showed himself in his company to publicly demonstrate his solidarity with him.

Martin has been a passionate golfer since the 1930s. Whenever he could, he retired to a golf course. During the filming of his films, he often set up a makeshift driving range on the set, where he practiced punches in the shooting breaks. In later years, Martin developed into a car enthusiast, who mainly collected American and Italian sports cars. Among the exclusive exhibits of his collection was a dual-ghia, produced in only a few copies, which he also used as a prop in the movie Küss mich, Dummkopf .

Illness and death

Mack Gray had introduced Martin to the narcotic and narcotic Percodan in the 1950s. At least since the 1970s, Martin - as well as Jerry Lewis and Gray himself - was dependent on the drug; In addition, from the end of the decade alcohol problems. In 1990 he undertook a withdrawal attempt.

At the beginning of the 1980s, Martin's health deteriorated noticeably. He increasingly had difficulty memorizing texts. The accidental death of his son Dean Paul in 1987 triggered a lasting depression in Martin, which expressed itself among other things in an increased indifference to himself and the environment. Jerry Lewis was of the opinion that the death of his son had Martin his will to live ("That was the day he died"). Sinatra's Together Again TourThe year 1988 was an unsuccessful attempt to free Martin from his lethargy. Although he still had some performances in Las Vegas in the following years; but they were short and last showed "a Dean Martin who could barely stand on his feet." His apathy intensified even after the death of Sammy Davis Jr. in the spring of 1990. At the beginning of the 1990s, Martin was Alzheimer's Disease diagnosed, and in September 1993 also lung cancer.

Dean Martin died on 25 December 1995 at the age of 78 years as a result of his cancer. On the day of his death, the streets and buildings in Las Vegas were darkened for ten minutes. Martin was buried on December 28, 1995 at the Pierce Bros. Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Dean Martin
Dean Martin (* 7.

Dino – Dean – Crocetti – Martini – Martin: Namenswechsel

Jerry Lewis war der Ansicht, der Tod seines Sohnes habe Martin seinen Lebenswillen genommen („That was the day he died“).

Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles beigesetzt.
