.....about how Dean Martin "would light a cigarette....."

Jack Pendarvis
Hey pallies, likes, of course, we loves to shares everythin' 'bout our most beloved Dino, but one of the thin's that we most loves to share are true tales of when our Dino walked the earth by pallies who had the perfectly powerful privilege of hangin' our with our great great man.  Today we are particularly pleased to return to the blog of Mr. Jack Pendarvis, a known deep digger of our Dino who hangs out at his self-tagged blog, The Place Where Jack Pendarvis has a "Blog."

'Though it's been a ton of time since we last shared Dino-devotion from Mr. Pendarvis.....youse can find a couple of potent portions of Dino-delight we shared from Jack in January  2012   HERE and   HERE.  And, our most recent sharin' of Dino-adulation from Pendarvis was in April 2014 and can be located  HERE.

Likes Jack's most recent sharin' is tagged "The Golden Rule" and is stunnin' story of our Dino, lightin' his ever present Kent cigarette with his solid gold lighter.  As you will read below the story comes from a marvelous memoir by Miss Shirley MacLaine, one of the honorary members of the Rat Pack.
It's a story that we have never ever heard before and likes, of course, it certainly is makin' us yearn to get our hands on Miss Shirley's tome to see what other Dino-remembrances that she has shared.

We are truly truly lost for words to share our awesome appreciato to Mr. Jack Pendarvis as well as Miss Shirley MacLaine for this immensely intriguin' insight into our King of Cool.  We are totally totally thrilled to be able to past it all to all youse Dino-holics so we can all grow deeper and deeper in the life and times of our most most beloved Dino!  To checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.

The Golden Rule

As is well documented, I don't "blog" anymore unless I stumble across something I should have put in my cigarette lighter book but didn't know about in time. So! Megan Abbott and I are reading a Hollywood memoir by Shirley MacLaine, and she tells about how Dean Martin "would light a cigarette with his solid gold lighter, blow out the flame, and toss the gold lighter from the window as if it was a used match." So! This naturally reminded me of something I DID put in my cigarette lighter book: the time Hal Needham maliciously tossed his friend's gold cigarette lighter from the window of a speeding car as a joke. If only I had known about Dean's habit. What a study in contrasts Dino and Needham would have made! As MacLaine notes, someone always retrieved Dean's lighter for him, whereas (Shirley MacLaine does not note this part; how could she?) the lighter of Needham's friend was seemingly lost forever. So Needham's act is more "punk rock" (I guessJon Langford once told me that being "punk rock" does not necessarily call for unmannerly behavior) while Dean's is ironic(maybe? I have no idea what I'm talking about. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't know about this in time to put it in the book). But I think we can agree that Dean is on firmer ground morally. I'm glad that's settled.

Time passed. I really loved Dean Martin.

Hey pallies, likes it is fantastically fantastic fun to return to a blog and blogger that we have previously shared Dino-devotion from here at our humble little ilovedinomartin conclave.  Today after an absence of  nearly two years, we are powerfully pleased to share more Dino-delight from Mr. Ronny Elliott and his post "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," at his self-tagged  beau-ti-ful blog "ronnyelliott - Peace and love and rock'n'roll from a hillbilly, hellbent on saving the world.

We shared our first Dino-centric post from Mr. Elliott  HERE, and we have decided to share some of our original potent praise of Ronny in this post as well:   Hey pallies, likes likes what coulda be more 'citin' then sharin' 'nother pallie proclaimin' their awesome adulation of our most beloved Dino?!?!?!?!  That's what's on Dino-deck this very Dino-day.

Elliott's bio tell us that he himself is in the song writin' and song singin' biz himself tellin' us that he has "been writing songs and playing them since 1964. No gold records, no gold watch. I have been lucky enough to share bills with Chuck Berry, the Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, the Flatlanders, Van Morrison and lots of other heroes of mine."

Likes Elliott's first post that we shared in 2015, today's Dino-devotion also accents his "heartbreaking and unfathomable" loss when he was nine years old,  our most beloved Dino broke up his relationship with his beloved partner in 1956.  At the time the nine year old Ronny sez that "Man, I hated Dean Martin!"  But time seems to heal all wounds, and Elliott sez, "Time passed. I really loved Dean Martin."  We are, of course, deeply delighted that Ronny was able to more from  hate to love for our one and only Dino!

Mr. Ronny Elliott has a wonderful way with words and we very much enjoys this coolly creative way of scribin' his memories of our Dino and  Mr. Lewis....it is purely pleasurable to read his touchin' 'n tender thoughts.  We thanks him for more Dino-action from his blog!  To checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

When I tell you that 1956 was a big year for me, you have no idea. Oh, I've told you ad nauseam about Mom taking me to the armory to see The Biggest Rock'n'Roll Show of '56. Elvis tried to call me at home. I got a guitar for my birthday.

Loss called on me, too. It doesn't seem so grievous now but to me and other nine year olds it was heartbreaking and unfathomable. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis parted company. For us there had always been a Martin and Lewis. The handsome Italian crooner and the skinny, Jewish numbskull had begun their nightclub act in 1946 and by the time that I was old enough to sit through movies, there was nothing that thrilled my little heart like Paramount Pictures' biggest stars.

The plots were thin and predictable. Dean had to take his eyes off the dolls for long enough to save his lovable, dim-witted pal from himself and the cold, cold world. The end always came with Dean and Jerry living happily ever after, usually with the pretty girl in tow.

As nearly as I could follow the news, Dean abandoned his hapless pal. This time he wasn't coming back. Man, I hated Dean Martin! Me and most other nine year olds.

Of course the guitar meant more and more as time went on and pretty soon my eyes were on the girls, too. That's what a guitar is for, isn't it? I didn't think much about Dean Martin or Jerry Lewis.

Time passed. I really loved Dean Martin. He might be my favorite singer of the era. His TV show was timeless. I have to restrain myself here from bellyachin' about Jerry Lewis. Let's just say that as much as I adore Brigitte Bardot, baguettes, fishnet stockings and Citroens, I just can't understand what the French see in Jerry.

More time passed. Lots more time. Lots.

Leaving? I've learned a little. Being left? I could write the book. It's not always what it looks like. Maybe it's never what it looks like.

Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin made comedy magic together

As a double act with Dean Martin and later as a solo performer, Jerry Lewis gained millions of fans. He began stand-up comedy as a teenager after he dropped out of high school, dressing up in outlandish costumes and lip-synching to songs. At the time, this kind of performance was called a record act. It wasn't that successful and right about the time he was about to be fired, Jerry invited Dean Martin to join him on stage. The rest is history.

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis’ double comedy act propelled them to stardom. From their very first performance, they had an instantaneous on-stage chemistry. Dean played the smooth entertainer to Jerry’s crazy kid. Together, they made comedy magic.

James Kaplan, co-author of the book Dean & Me: (A Love Story), which he wrote with Jerry Lewis, takes us through Jerry’s life.

.....Dean Martin ain't a bad looker either.

Hey pallies, likes today we're back with one of the hundreds of Dino-drafts yet to see the light of Dino-day here at ilovedinomartin.  Likes, we were doin' a bit of groovy gazin' at some of dem drafts and we came 'pon one from 2016 that we decided was time to scribe some patter 'bout and get in published form for all youse Dino-philes to swankly savor.

From the intriguin'ly tagged blog "Exiled From Contentment" come part of a post tagged "Facebook ramblings - April 2016 where the unnamed blogger shared some  mini-ramblings from her "Facebook page along with an accompanying snapshot of the films I'm mini-reviewing."  What we are officially offerin' to youse today is their  respectful reflections on what we consider to be our most beloved Dino and his most beloved partner, Mr. Jerry Lewis' bestest of the best big screen capers.....the 1955 musical "Artists and Models."

This reviewer shares many many similar perspectives with us 'bout the wonderfulness of fantastic flick sharin' such incredible insights such as "It's top notch Martin & Lewis; the songs are catchy," and   "It looks beautiful too! It's photographed in VistaVision with candy Technicolor."  If we could pick only one of the 16 Martin and Lewis capers to personally own, it woulda, hands down be "Artists and Models" and we are totally touched that this reviewer had such a powerfully pleasurable first viewin' as well.  (btw, to set the record straight, we cherish all 15 of the Dino and Jerry dvds we have in our collection, only waitin' to find "Three Ring Circus" on DVD as well!)

We thanks the movin' picture reviewer at "Exiled From Contentment" for sharin' her deep delight in "Artists And Models" with her blog readership and surely bring more pallies into a deeper appreciation for our one and only Dino.  To checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this particular Dino-message.

Artists and Models (First time. DVR.)

The first film Martin & Lewis made with director Frank Tashlin and the second-to-last they made together (they were pretty much done with each other by the follow-up, Hollywood or Bust). I'm gonna be honest with you, I never really got into Jerry Lewis except for the films he directed himself and his work with Tashlin. It's like Tashlin was the only one who operated on the same level with him and I guess it's because his experience animating/directing Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck helped him understand a human cartoon like Lewis.

It's top notch Martin & Lewis; the songs are catchy (Martin crooning the bejesus out of "Innamorata", Lewis hey-ladying the fuck out of whatever the fuck he was singing) and the gags are a-plenty, only this time with Tashlin it mostly feels like a live-action cartoon.

It looks beautiful too! It's photographed in VistaVision with candy Technicolor and the production design is old-school studio work that I am always a sucker for. You can tell they put some serious money into this. There's also plenty of eye candy with attractive women all about the proceedings (Dorothy Malone! Anita Ekberg!) and hey, Dean Martin ain't a bad looker either. See, this was back when guys looked like men, none of this skinny tight pants wearing six-pack abs-having motherfuckers who can't fight worth a shit, says the guy with a big gut and a violent temper.

Tashlin might be the earliest example I can think of a director putting up what gets him off on-screen. Shameless leg shots and sexy costumes everywhere! Even one shot of a bound and gagged 21-year-old Shirley MacLaine wearing a tight fitting costume and hosiery made me feel funny/weird, in a Quentin Tarantino foot fetish kinda way. Shit, I think I had a similar kinky spider sense tingling when a similarly-clad Scarlett Johansson was tied up in Marvel's The Avengers. Jesus Christ. I thought I knew myself already. Thanks a lot, Tashlin, for giving me yet another feather to stick in my Sick Fuck cap.

This was my first time watching it, so maybe it's too early to tell, but in comparison to Hollywood or Bust, this one doesn't quite match up, maybe because Hollywood had a giant Great Dane in it and this one doesn't. You give me hot chicks and an awesome dog and I'll give you a happy man.

By the way, to my fellow heteros and lesbians and animal lovers (but not in that way); do you ever find yourself walking or driving and suddenly you see an attractive woman walking a dog? And because you only have about two seconds to enjoy this, you have to make the Sophie's Choice of ogling the sexy lady girl or going AWWWW over the doggy dog dog bow-wow? Or is it just me?

Anyway, Artists and Models is good times if you can stand Jerry Lewis' style of comedy and plus he calls himself "retarded" at one point, so there's that too.

Dean may be the more grounded one

BiancaVirginia-147
Hey pallies, likes we gets to visit 'nother great flick blog tagged "THE DYING MOVIE RACE" where twin sisters Bianca 'n Virginia holds forth.  This silver screen blog awesomely accents  "movies that the general public refuses to touch whether it be because they are black-and-white, silent, foreign, etc."  And, likes  each and every Thursday they hold themed days likes the followin' post "MOVIE TROPE THURSDAY: STRAIGHT MAN."

Likes as part of a larger post, our Dino is accented 'bout his comedic partnership with Mr. Jerry Lewis and we have included the pertinent patter from the blog 'bout this topic.  We gotta 'fess up that we are simply simply swankly smitten by these wise words scribed by one of the twins, "Another non-straight man often mistaken for one is Dean Martin in the Martin and Lewis pairings."  Followin' that terrific topic sentence we read a powerful paragraph of remarkable reasons why our Dino ain't a straight man to Jerry and we thinks it is coolly chocked full of Dino-truth!

As much as we are likes in awesome accord with the Dino-notions expressed, we are even more incredibly impressed and intrigued by the Dino and Lewis image that they have used to grace this post.  It's a staged shot of our most wonderful Dino and his most wonderful partner, Mr. Jerry Lewis winkin' for the camera.  Likes, we have never ever seen this particular pix before, and we gotta 'fess up that it is fast becomin' one of our most fabulous favs of the delightful duo, perhaps only rivalin' the potent pix of our Dino kissin' Jerry durin' a night club gig that we share very often here...indeed in our very last Dino-gram to all youse Dino-philes.

We are deeply deeply indebted to twin sisters Bianca 'n Virginia for givin' us thought provokin' insights on our Dino as straight man---or not...to powerfully ponder, as well as powerfully potent pix of our Dino to solemnly savor!  To checks  this out, and read their post in it's entirety, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-message.

Dean and Jerry

Another non-straight man often mistaken for one is Dean Martin in the Martin and Lewis pairings. The Martin and Lewis movies started to fail when Dean was treated as a straight man despite the fact that he is not one. Sure, Dean is the smart one compared to the two (like Hardy) but he delivers punch-lines and jokes the same way Jerry does, he just does it differently. Dean may be the more grounded one and he is not nearly as goofy as Jerry but he has his own humor intact. Martin and Lewis work well when Dean and Jerry play off each other equally rather than just Martin playing off Lewis. The change is when it was clear that the studio did not understand the humor crafted by the Martin and Lewis team. Dean had the looks and the singing voice, so he had to be the straight man despite the fact that he never was intended to be one.

On This Day In Dino-history: July 25, 1946

Hey pallies, likes yesterday was a day of rememberin'  the last time that our most beloved Dino and most beloved partner, Mr. Jerry Lewis performed on stage together, and today is that huge of huge  historic day in all of Dino-history that Martin and Lewis began their decade long partnership of comedy. seventy years ago this very day, July 25, 1946 our great man and the ever funny Jerry Lewis did their first nightclub performance in Alantic City together at the Club 500...and the world was never ever the same again...and likes never ever will be!

Today's Dino-remembrance comes from the blog pad "Triviazoids - Day-To-Day Look At History Links" by Mr. Brad Williams. Likes everythin' our Dino does it likes purely purely perfect...to the point that the team of Martin and Lewis performed for exaxtly 10 years to the day....beginnin' July 25, 1946 and endin' as we shared yesterday on July 24, 1956. Certainly this was the decade of comedic brilliance between our beloved Dino and  Mr. Lewis.

So so loves rememberin' and honorin' these incredibly important days in the life and times of our amazin' King of Cool. ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to Mr. Brad Williams for reverently rememberin' and hugely honorin' this very very special day in the life and times of our most beloved Dino!

We remain,

Yours in Dino,

“Layyyyyy-deeee!” Did you know the comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis performed together for the first time on 25th in 1946 at a club in Atlantic City? Martin and Lewis also officially broke up on July 24th, 1956.

On This Day In Dino-history: July 24, 1956

Hey pallies, likes 61 years  'go this very day, July 24, in 1956 our most beloved Dino had likes his hugest of hugest endin' and likes his newest of newest beginnin' when he called it quits with his partner, Mr. Jerry Lewis...exactly a decade after they had created the greatest comedy partnership in all of world history.

Likes it has becomes likes a touchin' 'n tender tradition on this hugely historic of historic Dino-day to revisit a reverent retellin' of what happened on that last night   Martin and Lewis took the stage at the Copacabana....truly some deeply heart-felt and incredible insights 'bout our Dino and Mr. Lewis' last gig together  shared at the blog "Frontier Net."

From the writings, "The Copacabana, An Illustrated History" by Kristin Baggleaar  comes some deeply deeply devoted details of our Dino and  Mr. Lewis' swan song.  So, once 'gain, let's sit back and reflect on the  meanin's of likes this most bitter-sweet day in all of Dino-history.

Likes as we often do on this day, 'gain likes gotta 'fess up pallies, likes for years we had zip, zero, nadda  appreciato for Mr. Jerry Lewis whatsoever, and felt that the split-up was exactly what Lewis deserved.  But, ever since readin' and rereadin'  Lewis' tome "Dean and Me: A Love Story," we have greatly greatly grown in our ubber understandin' and awestruck  appreciato of just how much Mr. Lewis loved, and still loves our most beloved Dino!

In fact, likes we once 'gain gotta 'fess up that  we have become likes totally totally jealous of Mr. Lewis 'cause he got to spend 10 intimate and glorious years with the coolest person ever to walk the face of the earth...and got to know our Dino better then any other person alive ever has or ever will.  What coulda be more wonderful then that!   In fact, we remember in readin' in Tosches' outstandin' Dino-bio that Lewis was jealous of Jeanne and Jeanne was equally jealous of Lewis...and who could blame 'em...they each wanted our Dino for themselves...and don't we all likes feel likes that same Dino-way?!?!?!

Anyway, on this special Dino-day in Dino-history we remember the lovin' legacy that our Dino and Mr. Lewis had together, and see this endin' as a hugely important new beginnin' for our most beloved Dino.  We are  Dino-rememberin' with youse.

We remain,

Yours in Dino,

Dino Martin Peters

The Copacabana

An Illustrated History by Kristin Baggelaar
.

By summer 1956, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis officially announced that they were breaking up as a team; however, together they were committed to one last engagement at the Copacabana.  Perhaps because it was the last time they would ever work together, Martin and Lewis' final two-week stand at the Copa did a record-breaking business.

The diminished floorshow space was a tribute to their draw and mass impact.  The Doug Coudy production numbers were curtailed as the acts, including the personable dance team of Conn & Mann, were stage waits for the headliners.  Martin & Lewis worked with smoothness and no apparent personal friction despite all the press about their rift, but some dissension was evident with their Pardners bit, a cafe trailer for their soon-to-be released Paramount film of the same name.  To their professional credit they played it straight, with Lewis foiling for Martin's crooning, and likewise, Martin foiling for his partner's clowning.  While both were well received, it was felt that solo or team, the impact was not as resounding as in the past until their final night.  Every celebrity in Manhattan was in the audience to witness the pair's swan song of one of the greatest comedy acts in history.  They pulled out every schtick in their comedy bag for the star-studded crowd, from squirting seltzer down Milton Berle's shirt front to cutting off Monte Proser's necktie.  The sophisticated cafe crowd wouldn't let them quit.

The final moments of the last show of their farewell engagement at the Copa on a hot Tuesday night, July 24, 1956, are pressed indelibly in the minds of those who were present.  Martin's face was impassable, cool to the end.  They finished with the final crescendo from Pardners:  "You and me, we'll be the greatest pardners, buddies, and pals!"  They joined hands for a last bow.  Martin hugged Lewis.  The audience exploded in an emotional uproar.  Jackie Gleason jumped up and grabbed the mike, wiped away a tear, and said, "Folks, this can't be allowed to happen."  The audience roared its approval, but Martin & Lewis just shook their heads, no.  It was over.  There was no encore.  Martin took one aisle away from the floor; Lewis took the other.

If love still can remember, the spark may burn again
I know that I'd be contented with yesterday's memories
Knowing you think of me once in a while

Dino Paul Crocetti would play an important role here as Dean Martin.

Hey pallies, likes it seems that EVERYBODY is celebratin' the centennial of our most beloved Dino's descent to earth and we couldn't be more powerfully psyched to bring youse Dino-holics  more 'n more most Dino-honorin' posts.  Likes today we share with you a Dino-remembrance from our Dino's playground, 'Vegas baby 'Vegas!  From the blog of NEVADA PUBLIC RADIO come a post "Silver Party" in the series "Neveda Yesterdays."

Likes scribed by Mr. Michael Green it was read on air by Senator Richard Bryan and begins with a note that our Dino was born just a week after John F. Kennedy, notin' that both famous men were born to immigrant families.  It would be incredibly intriguin' to sometime take the time to compare and contrast these two giants of their time...but we digress.

The post includes a cool candid pose of our Dino dancin' with two girls from the stage of the Copa in 1959 and much of the usual patter on our Dino's life and times.  We were most engaged with the swank scribin's 'bout our Dino's huge success in 'Vegas and the different casino's that he headlined at over the decades.

We are particularly delighted to see the variety of posts comin' outta our Dino's playground on the 100th anniversary of his humble birth in Stubenville on June 7, 1917.  We are certain that we will be sharin' more of 'em in the days, weeks, and months ahead.  Thanks to the pallies at NEVADA PUBLIC RADIO, Mr. Michael Green, and Senator Richard Bryan.  To checks this out in it's original source, and to listen to Senator Bryan readin' it, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram.

We recently talked about the centennial of John Kennedy’s birth and his importance to Nevada. Just over a week after the descendant of Irish immigrants was born in Massachusetts, a little boy was born to an Italian barber and an Italian-American mother in Steubenville, Ohio. Dino Paul Crocetti would play an important role here as Dean Martin.

As a young man, Dean did everything from prizefighting to dealing cards in illegal casinos. He began singing professionally. His style showed the influences of two popular singers of the time: Bing Crosby, and Harry Mills of the Mills Brothers. And then Dean met Jerry, as in Lewis. They officially debuted at Atlantic City’s 500 Club in 1946 and soon became the hottest act in show biz. Dean sang and Jerry tried to. Lewis would cause pandemonium and Martin would throw things at him. They quickly rocketed to the top, and stayed there for a decade: the Copacabana nightclub, radio and television shows, and movies. They also appeared in Las Vegas, starting in 1948 at the Flamingo, where they earned $15,000 a week—in those days, a LOT of money.

But in 1956, this great show business marriage broke up. Martin and Lewis would be superstars together and separately. At first, though, it looked bad for Dean—his first movie didn’t do well. Many saw him as no more than Jerry’s straight man, though Lewis called Martin a comedy genius. But there was still Las Vegas, and Martin performed at the Sands, where entertainment boss Jack Entratter had known them since his days at the Copa. Martin also got better and more successful movie roles. In 1965, he began a TV variety series that lasted nine seasons, followed by another decade of Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, many of them filmed in Las Vegas. He developed a persona as the laid-back, drunken crooner, and played it to perfection.
Dean Martin also was part of the Rat Pack. He and Frank Sinatra were close friends, and Sinatra used to joke that he spilled more than Martin drank—especially since the glass Martin carried on stage with him usually contained apple juice. Sinatra and Martin also wound up with small percentages of the Sands.

After Howard Hughes bought the Sands, Sinatra left amid a swirl of controversy, including a fight in the coffee shop. Martin quietly shifted to the Riviera, where he became a part-owner. Then, in 1973, he moved over to a new hotel. He was the opening night showroom performer for the MGM Grand. That became his main venue in Las Vegas, even after Kirk Kerkorian sold it to Bally’s in 1986.

By that time, Martin was no longer that active in movies or TV, mainly doing nightclubs and showrooms. Sadly, in 1987, his son Dean-Paul died in a plane crash, and it devastated him. His last performance was at Bally’s in 1990, when he had trouble singing and suffered physically with health issues and was still in anguish over his son’s death. He and Jerry Lewis did reunite, first on Lewis’s Labor Day telethon in 1976, and later after Dean-Paul’s funeral. But Dean went quietly into retirement and died Christmas Day, 1995, remembered, deservedly, as one of the true greats of Las Vegas entertainment.

Dean Martin 100 -- June 7, 2017

Singer, comic and actor Dean Martin was born 100 years ago today, on 07-June-1917, in Steubenville, Ohio.  I first remember him as an aging guy with a television variety show I didn't like to watch.  Later I saw his movies, first with partner Jerry Lewis, then on his own.  Then I started to pay attention to his music and realized he could sing.  Then I realized that he may have been the coolest guy in the world.

The Best Uses of Dean Martin Songs in Movies Wake  July 16, 2017

It’s amazing to think that Dean Martin, born Dino Crocetti, came up in such a hard manner. He was a boxer, a steel mill worker, and even worked in a casino. He teamed up with Jerry Lewis at one point and the pair made about 16 movies together in 11 years. After their split it was assumed the Dean wouldn’t really go anywhere with his career but he proved everyone wrong when he went even further into his acting and into his music. His golden pipes could be heard virtually everywhere, be it TV or film, and eventually he became something of a household name.

Dean Martin’s music can be heard even today in several films that are still in circulation or have just recently come out.

5. You I Love – Sandy Wexler

It’s pretty common to hear classic rock from the 1960’s and 70’s in Sandler’s films but maybe it’s a sign that he’s maturing when you can begin to hear older classics from such performers as Dean Martin. It might simply allude to the fact that the character of Sandy Wexler is a little more old-fashioned and isn’t as into the rock scene, but once again, maybe that’s just Sandler finally growing up a little more.

4. Ain’t That A Kick In The Head – Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

This seems like kind of an odd selection to put into a Mission Impossible soundtrack, but it kind of makes sense. Mission Impossible is a classic show, and has featured a wide variety of music in the film and on its soundtracks since it became a hit movie series. There’s nothing saying that a little Dean Martin couldn’t go a long way towards giving the film a different sound that might enhance the experience.

3. That’s Amore – Bridget Jones’ Baby

Maybe it’s a little too much amore. We’ve all seen Bridget Jones before in film, and quite honestly we know the woman’s not so lonely that she can’t find a date. The trouble she gets herself into in this film has more to do with the fact that she found a way to stave of loneliness, but it also managed to insure that she wouldn’t ever be alone again. How in the world would you handle a situation in which you had no idea who was the father of your child?

2. Grazie, Prego, Scusi – Old Dogs

One day you meet up with the woman of your dreams again and you think that life couldn’t have taken a luckier turn. And then it drops that she has kids. And then she informs you that the kids are yours. Need we go on? Yes we do because the funny doesn’t stop there. Add into this equation that your life is in no way equipped to handle children at this moment and you’ve got at least an inkling of what direction things might be headed.

1. Baby It’s Cold Outside – Four Christmases

What’s more hectic, Christmas with the family, or four Christmases with four different families? Oy, if this was what the holidays was truly like with split families it would be no wonder that a couple would seek to avoid them all and head out of town without telling them.

There are numerous films out there with Dean Martin’s sweet voice still crooning to heighten whatever scene the song is attached to.  Thankfully he had the kind of voice that most people don’t want to forget.

DEAN MARTIN AND JERRY LEWIS TV SHOW - 1950 - The Colgate Comedy Hour

1950 – The television show “The Colgate Comedy Hour” debuted featuring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

AKA DEAN MARTIN, UNFORGETTABLE ACTOR AND SINGER.

Hey pallies, likes it has been fabulously fascinatin' to find so so many blogs beyond the USA proudly proclaimin' their deepest of deep devotion to our Dino on the centennial celebration of what we have tagged here at ilovedinomartin as "The Day That Coolness Came To Earth."  We have already shared a greatly good number of lovin' homages of our most beloved Dino that have come from all four corners of the Dino-world, and today we are proudly pleased to share yet 'nother international Dino-post from the land of Dino-heritage, Italy....Milano to be precise.

From the blog tagged  "FASHIONTIMES" comes "DINO PAUL CROCETTI, AKA DEAN MARTIN," which appreciatively accents both our Dino's decade long teamin' with Mr. Jerry Lewis as well as his solo career."  Likes one of the thin's that is so so intriguin'ly interestin' is how when foreign countries speak of our Dino's big screen efforts, the tags of the flicks are so so different then the English tags.  Likes for example in this post, our Dino's greatest of great western, "Rio Bravo" becomes  "An Honor Dollar" in the Italiano version.

DINO PAUL CROCETTI, AKA DEAN MARTIN

By Room Look - June 7, 2017

Coupled with Jerry Lewis or alone: Dean Martin made his mark in music and cinema.

A CENTURY AGO TODAY, HE WAS BORN IN STEUBENVILLE, DINO PAUL CROCETTI, AKA DEAN MARTIN, UNFORGETTABLE ACTOR AND SINGER.

Son of parents of Italian origin, he chose to make it more american friendly its name to succeed. The family name, Martin, is in fact the anglofonizzata version of the name of the Italian Nino Martini content. It was with that name who managed to establish itself as a singer in clubs in New York, after the boxer and the gas station. His career can be divided into two periods, now let's see.

COUPLED WITH JERRY LEWIS

The meeting with Jerry Lewis was decisive for Dean Martin . The two met the first time at the Glass Hat Club in New York, where both were performing separated. Their first solo exhibition took place July 25, 1946 at Club 500 in Atlantic City was the start of a successful comedy duo that lasted a decade. On stage realizzavano of songs rich performances and sketches, some improvised on the spot. Given the appreciation of the public, along turned America, coming to perform at New York's Copacabana. After debuting even on TV (in the program The Ed Sullivan Show on CBS-TV) and radio (in The Martin and Lewis Show ), in 1948 their agent negotiated for them a big contract with Paramount . Together, they broke through in the cinema: realized sixteen films, from My Friend Irma (1949) up to Hollywood or Death! (1956). The partnership, because of growing personal conflicts, stopped exactly (or almost) ten years after their debut, on July 24, 1956.

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis

THE DEAN MARTIN SOLO

Despite initial skepticism - many believed that alone is not worth anything - Dean Martin achieved great successes even without Lewis . In addition to music (in 1954, was published the famous That's Amore , a tribute to the city of Naples), the cinema was able in fact to assert itself both in comedy and in drama. We remember it The Young Lions (1958, starring Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift) and Western An Honor Dollar (1959, opposite John Wayne). In the sixties he became part of the Rat Pack , a group of actors and singers led by his friend Frank Sinatra . With the Rat Pack, he played several films, including Ocean's Eleven, Three Against All, I 4 in Chicago . After shooting a series of four films in the secret agent Matt Helm , Dean Martin began the artistic decline, also related to his health. His last film of Conspiracies Parallel , 1987, a year before retiring from the scene.

DINO PAUL CROCETTI, IN ARTE DEAN MARTIN

Dean Martin e Jerry Lewis

If at first she says no try again
If you meet with defeat try again
Don't forget at the start she won't part with her heart
Til you prove that it won't be in vain

So don't cry and don't sigh try again
Though the odds are one hundred to ten
Think how great the success when her answer is yes
And that's why you must try again

Don't forget at the start she won't part with her heart
Til you prove that it won't be in vain
So don't cry and don't sigh try again
Though the odds are one hundred to ten
Think how great the success when her answer is yes
And that's why you must try again

Hey pallies, likes for us it is always always remarkably refreshin' to make return visits to blogs where we have previously shared deep deep devotion to our Dino.  Likes, we were hugely hopin' that we woulda find Dino-devotees that have been featured here  before makin' excellent efforts to coolly celebrate the centennial of our most beloved Dino's descent to earth on June 7, 1917.

Likes today we are thrilled to share awesome adulation from the pen of Mr. Terence Towles Canote from his beautiful blog tagged "A SHROUD OF THOUGHTS - DEDICATED TO POP CULTURE IN ALL ITS FORMS."  A quartet of times, once in 2009 and thrice in 2016 we are been totally totally thrilled to share Dino-scribin's from Mr. Canote, and his post "The 100th Anniversary of Dean Martin's Birth" is, to our way of Dino-thinkin' his best effort yet!  Youse can read Terence other Dino-offerin'   HERE, and HERE, and  HERE, and  HERE.

We coulda writes tons 'n tons of terrific thin's 'bout this absolutely-sold-out-to-Dino pallie's wonderfully wise words of his awesome admiration for our most most beloved Dino, but that woulda simply delay all youse Dino-philes from jumpin' in and immersin' yourselves in these solemnly swank scribin's.  Likes, let just say that Terence does an absolutely awesome job of retellin' the Dino-story with lots of lovin' and sharin' delightful details that are often left out.  But, what has melted our Dino-hearts is when Mr. Canote speaks of his fam and his personal powerfully potent devotion to our one and only Dino.  Just knowin' that Terence even dreamed of our Dino the night before he proudly posted these touchin' 'n tender thoughts, is so so special and has marvelously moved us in our deepest of deepest delight in our King of  Cool.

The 100th Anniversary of Dean Martin's Birth

I think it is safe to say that my family were Dean Martin fans. When I was little every Thursday night my father would pop popcorn, we would open sodas, and we would gather around the television set to watch The Dean Martin Show. We watched his movies as well, everything from the films he made with former partner Jerry Lewis to the ones he made with such stars as Frank Sinatra and John Wayne. My family may not have agreed on everything, but we were united in our love for Dean Martin. Indeed, Dean Martin has remained one of my favourite performers to this day. It was 100 years ago today that Dino was born.

Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio on June 7 1917. His parents were Italian immigrants, and young Dino did not speak English until he began attending school when he was 5 years old. As a teenager he began playing drums. When he was in 10th grade he dropped out of Stebenville High School and worked a variety of jobs, from being a croupier in a speakeasy to working in a steel mill. He also sang with local bands, billing himself as "Dino Martini". He got his big break when he began singing with  the Ernie McKay Orchestra. In the early 1940s he started singing with Sammy Watikins's band. It was Mr. Watkins who suggested he change his stage name to "Dean Martin".

Dean Martin's singing career would be interrupted in 1944 when he was drafted into the United States Army. He served for a year in Akron, Ohio, but was eventually given a medical discharge because of a double hernia. After leaving the Army Dean Martin returned to singing. He was doing well enough performing in clubs on the East Coast that he attracted the attention of both MGM and Columbia Pictures, although neither signed him to a contract at the time. It was in 1945 that Dean Martin met comedian Jerry Lewis at the Glass Hat Club in New York City, where they were both performing. The two made their debut as a comedy team at the 500 Club in Atlantic City on July 25 1946.

Martin and Lewis's first performance was not particularly well received. The two then threw out their scripted gags in favour of improvisation. They soon proved to be very popular at the 500 Club, so much so that they were in demand all along the East Coast. It was not long before  the team began appearing on television and radio. Martin and Lewis appeared on the very first edition of Toast of the Town, later retitled The Ed Sullivan Show. They got their own radio show on NBC, The Martin and Lewis Show, which ran from April 1949 to July 1953. They appeared on such television shows as Texaco Star TheatreThe Saturday Night Revue, and The Colgate Comedy Hour. Naturally, Hollywood took notice of the team. In 1949, the same year that their radio show debuted, Paramount signed Martin and Lewis to a contract. Making their film debut in My Friend Irma in 1949, Martin and Lewis appeared in several movies until 1956, including At War With the Army (1950), Scared Stiff (1953), and Artists and Models (1955).

Even while he was working with Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin had a successful recording career. His 1949 single  "Powder Your Face with Sunshine (Smile, Smile, Smile)" went to no. 10 on the Billboard chart. His 1950 single "I'll Always Love You" went to no. 11. His 1953 recording of "That's Amore" went all the way to no. 2. In 1955 he hit no. 1 with his single "Memories Are Made of This".

While Martin and Lewis had proven successful as a team on television, on radio, and in films, their relationship gradually began to fall apart as the Fifties progressed. Dean Martin left the team ten years exactly after they had first performed together, on July 25 1956. Sadly, the two would not speak to each other privately for another twenty years.

If anything, Dean Martin would prove even more successful on his own than he had with Jerry Lewis. While his first film without Mr. Lewis, Ten Thousand Bedrooms (1957), failed at the box office, he would appear in a number of successful movies from the late Fifties into the Sixties. He had a box office success as one of the co-stars of The Young Lions (1958). He appeared in his first movie with fellow crooner Frank Sinatra, Some Came Running, in 1958. Mr. Martin even appeared in Westerns. One of his most successful films was opposite John Wayne, Rio Bravo, in 1958. He would co-star with John Wayne again in The Sons of Katie Elder (1965). From the late Fifties into the Sixties he would appear in such films as Ocean's 11 (1960), Sergeants 3 (1962), Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964), Kiss Me, Stupid (1964), Bandolero! (1968), and Airport (1970). Starting with The Silencers in 1966 Dean Martin appeared as superspy Matt Helm in four movies (in addition to The Silencers, they were Murderers' Row in 1966, The Ambushers in 1967, and The Wrecking Crew in 1969).

Dean Martin's recording career also continue to be strong throughout the late Fifties and Sixties. The year 1958 gave him two of his biggest hits, "Return to Me" and "Volare". In 1964 what may be his best remembered song (at least for Baby Boomers and Gen Xers who can remember his TV show) "Everybody Loves Somebody" was released.  He finished out the Sixties with such hits as "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You" and "I Will".

Of course, Dean Martin had great success on television in the Sixties. He made a rare guest appearance on the Western Rawhide, in the episode "Canliss" in 1964. He also guest starred on several Bob Hope specials, and appeared on The Tonight Show several times. By far his biggest success on television would be The Dean Martin Show. Debuting in 1965, The Dean Martin Show ran until 1974. During the show's final season it featured celebrity roasts as a regular segment. The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts would continue as a series of specials after The Dean Martin Show left the air.  In the Seventies he also guest starred on Charlie's AngelsThe Misadventures of Sheriff LoboThe Big Show, and Vega$. He appeared in the films Something Big (1971), Showdown (1973),  and Mr. Ricco (1975). He did a Christmas special on NBC in 1980.

After the Seventies Dean Martin's career slowed a bit. He continued to record, and even had a minor hit, "Since I Met You Baby", in the Eighties. He appeared in the movies The Cannonball Run (1981) and Cannonball Run II (1984).  He was a regular, playing himself, on the short-live comedy TV series Half-Nelson. He did a stadium tour with Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra in 1988. He performed in Las Vegas for one last time  Bally's Hotel in 1990.

It was in 1993 that Dean Martin was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died on Christmas in 1995 at the age of 78.

Dean Martin has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. In fact, last night I even dreamed I met Mr. Martin, dressed in a tuxedo as he would be in a night club act. I told him I was writing a tribute for him on my blog for his 100th birthday and that pleased him. I almost never dream of celebrities, so the fact that I dreamed of Dean Martin on the eve of his 100th birthday demonstrates just how significant he has been in my life. Dean Martin was the first crooner of which I was a fan, even before Bing Crosby. I always thought he was the coolest member of the Rat Pack (although I will confess Sammy Davis Jr. gives him a run for his money on that score). Quite simply, Dean Martin was always one of my favourite singers, comedians, and actors.

Of course, I am not along in my admiration for Dino. Ever since Martin and Lewis emerged on the scene in the late Forties, Dean Martin has had a huge number of fans. To me, at least, the appeal of Dean Martin is not hard to figure out. He had an easy-going, amiable style that made him instantly likeable. He also had a wry sense of humour, and could deliver absolutely hilarious lines with a fairly straight face. He was also one of the greatest crooners around. He had a rich baritone that could be very smooth or bouncy depending upon the song. Dean Martin's style was also very unique. When Dino sang a song, you knew it was Dino.

While Dean Martin began his career as a singer, he would also become an actor. Often his characters were much like his stage persona, that of a slightly drunken, relaxed playboy. That having been said, Dean Martin played a wider variety of roles in film than simply Dean Martin. In Rio Bravo he played Dude, the deputy sheriff who goes from being a drunk to being a competent lawman. In Toys in the Attic he played Julian Berniersa young man who runs afoul of his spinster sister when he returns to New Orleans. In Airport he played Vernon Demarest, the checkride captain for TGA Flight Two. Surprisingly enough for someone who grew up far from the West, he appeared in several Westerns over the years, including 4 for TexasThe Sons of Katie ElderRough Night in Jericho, and others. In fact, aside from Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin may have been the only member of the Rat Pack who was entirely convincing as a Western hero.

Dean Martin has often been called "the King of Cool", a title he shares with Steve McQueen. As big a fan of Steve McQueen as I am, I have to confess that the title might rightfully belong to Dino. Steve McQueen was primarily an action star. On the other hand, Dean Martin could do it all. He could sing. He could do comedy. He could do drama. He could be an action star. And he could do all of these things while he was impeccably dressed. If Dean Martin is still immensely popular on what would have been his 100th birthday, it is perhaps because he was an extremely versatile performer with an easygoing style that pleased audiences. There simply wasn't anyone else quite like him.
