Dean Martin Appreciation

I’d like for all of us to step back from our busy lives, and pause. I’d like for us to ponder a bit about the many blessings life has done for us. Then, I’d like for us to stop for a moment, and appreciate the timeless soul of one Dean Martin.+

Dean Martin is a legend. No doubt about it. Do you know who he was?

Singer, comedian, actor, and musician were just some of many things he was.

Dean Martin was born June 7th, 1914 in Steubenville, Ohio. But it’s not where he’s from that’s important. Listen to his story.

He spoke no English until he was 5, he was bullied because of his accent, and he dropped out of high school in tenth grade.

He failed as an amateur boxer, losing all but one of his 12 fights. He bootlegged liquor, and worked in an illegal casino as a croupier.

He could not read a lick of sheet music, yet he became one of the most influential singers in the 20th century.

Dean Martin sang around nightclubs for a long time, before catching a big break with a bigger band. This eventually led to production studios noticing him and signing him to record songs. It was during this time that he met with Jerry Lewis and began working on comedy. “Martin and Lewis” was one of the funniest and most enjoyable comedian pairings at the time. After they split because of creative differences, Martin went into serious dramatic acting. His most notable film was Young Lions which he co-starred with such greats as Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift.

And now he’s a success story. This man went from nothing, and built himself up. I hope you feel that you too can do the same.

There’s more to the biography of Dean Martin, but here’s the nitty gritty. He was socially lacking, physically lacking, and academically lacking, and he became the “King of Cool,” the “womanizer,” and the starring member of the influential Rat Pack, which included Sinatra, Davis, and Bogart.

Dean Martin is a legend. An amazing success who wasn’t fed with a silver spoon since day one. I hope this appreciation article will give you the little inspiration you need for the rest of your day.

Carry on.
