Biography They said that Dean Martin was the “King of Cool,” and they were probably right. It takes a certain type of person to become the center of attention the way he did. It’s the kind of person that Orlando, FL raised, Los Angeles based rapper Reason idolizes.
“Old Hollywood” seemed like light-years away for Reason, growing up and honing his craft in a place that’s better known for Mickey Mouse than music. But that was never a deterrent for the young talent, who eventually found himself rapping for Diddy on MTV’s “Making The Band 2″. After appearing on video game soundtracks, performing all across the world, and releasing critically-acclaimed mixtapes, Reason finally decided to further emulate his idol by moving to Los Angeles.

Hey pallies, just was checkin' out the official Dean Martin Variety Hour pad from distributor Gunty-Renker yesterday when I discovered that they musta very recently put on a brief infomercial 'bout the 29 volume Dino-collection. As I viewed the vid I was startled to hear that....
"This may be your very last chance to own this classic best selling dvd collection because the Dean Martin Variety Show is going back into the vaults. That means this offer may be gone for years. Not available anywhere. Not in stores or on tv."
Pallies, this sounds like a scare tactic to me...'specially since they use the word "may" twice....sounds likes they are tryin' to get all us lovers of Dino to pony up our bread asap so we will miss out on the Dino-action. But, likes we all knows that they are lots of sources for the Dino-show besides Gunty-Renker....although I certainly always desire to honor our Dino by gettin' his merchandise from the offical distributers. So, we'll just have to see if what they threaten will come true.
So grateful for all the Dino-devoted pallies who keep postin; more and more Dino-clips over at youtube....the powers that be may try and bury the Dino-show in the "vaults'...but Dino-holics will stay united in the Dino-cause of spreadin' the Dino-message. Hey pallies, thrilled to just have read this stellar piece of Dino-history and be passin' it all to all my Dino-holic ilovedinomartin pallies. From the Brittish blog "Routenote" comes this great Dino-post of how our Dino hit numero uno in the UK with "Memories Are Made Of This" on February 17, 1955. We says our Dino-thanks to a dude tagged Simoninja for creatin' this note of historical Dino-significance.

February the 17th saw the hugely sucsessful Dean Martin with surprisingly, his only ever UK number one. With “Memories Are Made Of This”, Written by Terry Gilkyson, Richard Dehr and Frank Miller, Dean enjoyed one month in the UK top spot.
Terry Gilkyson’s daughter Eliza spoke of her dad, “He always hated people finding hidden meanings an metaphors in his songs, because he just did it as a job. He went to the office everyday and just wrote songs. But “Memories Are Made Of This” was an exception, its about us: its about him meeting my mother and having three kids. He’s left us a wonderful legacy. At the time everything dad was writing was turning to gold”.
On the other hand Dean Martin was going through hell in 1956. His marriage was on the rocks and his hugely successful comedy duo with Jerry Lewis was just about over. He told Gilkyson that “Memories Are Made Of This” was awful as far as he was concerned so they recorded it anyway. He recorded it with “The Easy Riders”, a group containing Gilkyson co-writers, Richard Dehr and Fran Miller.
The single topped the US chart for 6 weeks, with a cover version of the song, Gale Storm, reaching number 5 simultaneously. The only whiff of a snip of any real competition in the UK came from television comedian Dave King, whose own version of the song also only reached number 5. The song again made the top 20 in the UK when it was revived by Val Doonican in 1967.

Hey pallies, likes here is a chick who is truly in the Dino-know. Her name is Devorah Freudiger and she is in the business of sellin' java. From the hot blog "Gimme! Coffee" comes her V-day post. Seems Miss Devorah had to work on the day of amore, but as you read her post, you'll see that she didn't seem to mind a bit of pullin' duty.

Today is a very important day in Dino-history...this day, February 13, in the year of our Dino 1962 our great man said no to Capitol Records to renew his contract and moved over to his pallie frankie's new label Reprise.
Our Dino is always the man of action, always the man who lives life on his own terms, and by sayin' no to Capitol, he created his own production company, Claude Productions, and thus had the power to control his own destiny!

1962 - After releasing 11 albums with the label, Dean Martin refuses to renew his contract with Capitol Records. Martin will sign with Reprise Records and start his own production company, Claude Productions, so that he can keep all rights and exclusive ownership of his work from then on.

Dean Martin (June 7, 1917 – December 25, 1995), born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio to Italian immigrant parents, Gaetano and Angela Crocetti.
Martin and Lewis' official debut together occurred at Atlantic City's 500 Club on July 24, 1946 and they were not well received.. More than a few people dubbed them "The Organ Grinder and the Monkey".
Lewis and Martin agreed to "go for broke", to throw out the pre-scripted gags and to improvise. Dean sang and Jerry came out dressed as a busboy, dropping plates and making a shambles of both Martin's performance and the club's sense of decorum until Lewis was chased from the room as Martin pelted him with breadrolls. They did slapstick, reeled off old vaudeville jokes, and did whatever else popped into their heads at the moment. This time, the audience doubled over in laughter. This success led to a series of well-paying engagements on the Eastern seaboard, culminating in a triumphant run at New York's Copacabana.
The act broke up in 1956, 10 years to the day from the first official teaming.
Dino made a public reconciliation with Jerry Lewis on Lewis' Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon in 1976. Frank Sinatra shocked Lewis and the world by bringing Martin out on stage. As Martin and Lewis embraced, the audience erupted in cheers and the phone banks lit up, resulting in one of the telethon's most profitable years. Lewis reported the event was one of the three most memorable of his life. Lewis brought down the house when he quipped, "So, you working?" Martin, playing drunk, replied that he was "at the Meggum" – this reference to the MGM Grand Hotel convulsed Lewis. This, along with the death of Martin's son Dean Paul Martin a few years later, helped to bring the two men together. They maintained a quiet friendship but only performed together again once, in 1989, on Dean's 72nd birthday.
Martin died of acute respiratory failure at his home on Christmas morning 1995, at the age of 78.

On this twelvth day of Dino-amore-month, I shares with you a portion of a review of DeLillo's latest tome, "Point Omega." In an review tagged "An author who knows his cinema" by Glober Mark Feeney, Mr. Feeney shares near the end of the prose 'bout the first time he met Mr. DeLillo. On seein' DeLillo, Feeney blurted out, “You look like Dean Martin!" To which author DeLillo responded, "Have you read the book?" Well, you can read that and the rest below. I’ve met DeLillo twice. The first time was for an interview, at his publisher’s offices, when “Underworld’’ came out. The elevator door opened, and there he stood. He looked much as he does in his author photos: graying hair, chiseled features, Italianate good looks. There was one difference. He wore oversized glasses with dark frames, the kind Martin Scorsese wears or a certain singer did while hosting celebrity roasts in the ’70s. “You look like Dean Martin!’’ I blurted out. DeLillo nodded.
“Have you read the book?’’ he asked. There was only one book he could have meant: Nick Tosches’s magnificent, nihilistic “Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams.’’ That was it, all right. DeLillo was a big fan. Martin’s partner, as you might imagine, figures almost as much in the book as Dino does. Let there be no doubt: Don DeLillo is a man who knows his Jerry Lewis, raccoon and all.

I chose to share this Dino-report from the Kansas City Star Entertainment web pad 'cause it is the only one that included a lovin' pix of our Dino and the frankie. Never saw this lovely Dino-photo before...but truly loves it so so much...doesn't our Dino looks so happy ...if I recall correctly at this time he was currently romancin' 19 year old Miss Andre Boyer who he took with him to the Tarrytown gig.

Sinatra, Martin to receive stars in Las Vegas

Sin City is paying homage to iconic singers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin by giving them each a place on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars.
Las Vegas Walk of Stars spokesman Pablo Castro Zavala said stars for the crooners would be unveiled Feb. 22 in a ceremony at the Flamingo Las Vegas casino-resort. The stars will then be placed in the sidewalk outside the Flamingo on the Las Vegas Strip.
Sinatra and Martin are icons of Sin City entertainment because of their appearances on stage, in film and on television.
The Rat Pack performers appeared in the 1960 movie "Ocean's Eleven," about a plan to rob five Las Vegas casinos in one night.
Officials say Dean Martin's daughter Deana Martin will accept his star on behalf of her father.

random friday, 1964 edition: dean martin, “everybody loves somebody”
When I think of Dean Martin, two things in particular come to mind. One, obviously, is Rio Bravo. The other is my father, who was a big fan of Dino. I’ve been considering this in the context of today’s random track. Sinatra ruled the roost for my parents when I was growing up, but now I wonder if that was more my mom’s doing. Not to say my dad didn’t like Frank, too, but it was my mom who loved Only the Lonely. And while my dad watched Dean Martin’s TV show religiously, I don’t remember if my mom even stayed up for it (memories are tenuous, of course). I think I’m at least right that my dad liked Dean Martin more than my mom did.
The basics of Martin’s career: a mildly-popular crooner teams up with Jerry Lewis, they become the most popular act of the pre-rock and roll era, radio and movies follow.
They split, Martin’s career stumbles a bit, then he hits his stride in movies and on record. (Yes, I posted this on the Ricky Nelson one, as well.)
In 1965, Martin’s own TV series begins … it ran for nine seasons, and spawned celebrity roast specials that ran for another decade.
The thing I find most interesting is how Martin was able to maintain his popularity long past the time rock and roll had taken over popular music. He made the Top Ten in 1949, and hit #1 in 1955 with “Memories Are Made of This.” By 1964, while Martin was still well-known as an actor, he hadn’t made the Top Ten for years, and the Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion would seem to have made Martin’s music irrelevant. Even his own son played in a rock and roll band, Dino, Desi & Billy, which apparently didn’t impress Dad very much. One day, the story goes, Dad told Son that he was tired of hearing about the Beatles, and he was going knock them off the charts. “Everybody Loves Somebody” did exactly that, pushing “A Hard Day’s Night” aside. (Wikipedia notes, “Dean Martin became the only person in history to ever predict he'd knock the Beatles off the charts, and actually succeed.”) Martin made the Top Ten twice more over the next year.
Why did my dad love this guy so much? The answer, I think, has something to do with the music, of course … Martin developed into a talented crooner over the years. But more than that, it was the Dean Martin persona. Not the amiable drunk (which was largely a myth), but the guy was so cool, he even out-cooled the other members of the Rat Pack. On his TV series, Martin perfected an aura of casualness that was extremely appealing. Men of my father’s age might have used Sinatra to get their wives in the mood for love, but they wanted to BE Dean Martin. (And yes, I know I’m making a huge leap here, but hey, it’s my blog, and my dad’s no longer with us to set me straight.)
Dean Martin, forever cool. In fact, in 2007, one of those technological marvels whereby dead people sing duets with living people was released under Dean’s name. It was called Forever Cool, and his duet with Martina McBride on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” made it to #7 on the Adult Contemporary charts.

This amazin' Dino-trib was created by a chick who tagged herself LadyKnight72 and features the hauntin' Dino-song, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." LadyKnight72 is a sweet Dino-lovin' lady named Paula who calls Antwerp, Belgium her home pad.
Miss Paula has shared countless Dino-clips via youtube that has, I am sure, drawn many many pallies from all over the globe to deeper and purer Dino-devotion...knowin', lovin' and honorin' our Dino. This particular Dino-trib alone has garnered 181 comments and 253 individual ratin's.
In speakin' of why she was compelled to share this Dino-vid with all the world, Miss Paula sez:
