Smoked, dosed and lolled was yes in all times in showbiz, but no world star played so terrific and merciless as Dean Martin (1917-1995). The "King of Cool" would have turned 100 on June 7th.
Until the age of five, biographers researched, he did not speak a word of English. Only Italian - or rather, this Abruzzo dialect of the area from which his father Gaetano had immigrated to the USA and had gained a foothold in the "rusty belt" Ohio as a barber in Steubenville on the second educational path of the American Dream .

Dino Crocetti tumbled as the second son of a first generation of migrants to the New World , whose old order he wanted to throw from an early age on the pile. It was not until Frank Sinatra (1998) succeeded in forcing the two together again in 1976, without their knowledge. Delighted that Lewis asked live on TV Martin , "You workin '?" ("Are you still in business?"). With these words he had once addressed him in New York on the street - from the first glance incurably in love with the flamboyant women's hero, no one, man or woman, whether show partner or actor colleague, ever - even approximate - fathomed.
He drank to cover up

The "Rat Pack" (a drastic phrase by Humphrey Bogart's widow Lauren Bacall ) starring Sinatra , Davis Jr., Kennedy clan actor Peter Lawford and comedy star Joey Bishop was so mystified and diabolized that, without exception, all members were explicitly unwanted as about Marilyn Monroe(1962) was buried. Beloved son

Retreat after the death of the beloved son Dino
His friend Sinatra wanted to bring him back to life, planning a comforting tour with him and Sammy Davis Jr. "We can rent a train that takes us across the US , with its own food and barwaggon," Sinatra tried to motivate his friend, who fell into agony.
The thing about the train was called off, but the tour through the USA took place. Only invited guests - such as Jerry Lewis or Shirley MacLaine - had access when he was buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park. The "King of Cool" was miserably stifled on his first Christmas holiday in 1995 at his mansion in Beverly Hills .
"When the time comes," Dino said for many years before the last glass, "then bury me next to my counter."

Geraucht, gesoffen und gelumpt wurde ja zu allen Zeiten im Showbiz, aber kein Weltstar spielte damit so grandios und gnadenlos wie Dean Martin (1917–1995). Der "King of Cool" wäre am 7. Juni 100 geworden.
Bis zu seinem fünften Lebensjahr, so erforschten Biografen, beherrschte er kein Wort Englisch. Nur Italienisch – oder besser gesagt: diesen Abruzzen-Dialekt jener Gegend, aus der sein Vater Gaetano in die USA eingewandert war und auf dem zweiten Bildungsweg des "American Dream" als Friseur in Steubenville im „rostigen Gürtel“ Ohios Fuß gefasst hatte.

Und weiter: "Wenn man noch eine Zigarette mit einstudierter Lässigkeit im Mundwinkel baumeln ließ und eine Augenbraue wie zufällig anhob, war der Effekt vollkommen." Wenn es einen Begriff gab, den der spindeldürre, spitznasige "Spaghetti" ganz früh verinnerlichte, wohl ohne ihn auch nur buchstabieren zu können, dann war es Menefreghista. Ein so unübersetzbares wie unübertreffliches Synonym für jene Befindlichkeit, die etwa der Wiener unter "Nixscheißerei" subsumiert – kurzum: Es war ihm alles wurscht.
Mit 16 ließ er die Schule des Lernens für die des Lebens hinter sich: "Ich fand mich viel klüger als die Lehrer!" Er schmuggelte Alkohol, erwarb eine mittlere Reife in Kartentricks und in Selbstverteidigung, was ihn als "Kid Crochet" für ein paar Dollars zum Preisboxer machte. "Von meinen zwölf Kämpfen", kokettierte er später, "habe ich alle gewonnen, bis auf elf." Tatsächlich hält er einen respektablen Rekord von 24 Siegen in 30 Fights. Die lange Nase ging dabei (mindestens) dreimal zu Bruch und (ästhetisch unerheblich) in die Breite.

Erst Frank Sinatra ( 1998) gelang es, die beiden 1976 wieder, ohne ihr Wissen, zueinander zu zwingen. Köstlich, dass Lewis dabei live im TV Martin fragte: "You workin’?" ("Bist du noch im Geschäft?"). Mit genau diesen Worten hatte er ihn dereinst in New York auf offener Straße angesprochen – vom ersten Blick an unheilbar verliebt in den flamboyanten Frauenhelden, den niemand, ob Mann oder Frau, ob Showpartner oder Schauspielkollege, jemals – auch nur annähernd – ergründete.

Nach eigenen Angaben hatte er auf der Bühne stets nur Apfelsaft im Glas – die Kunstform „Drunk Act“, die er entwickelte, also jene schwankende Performance, bei der das Publikum davon ausging, er hätte "einen sitzen", sollte bloß von seiner Text- und Sprachunsicherheit ablenken. Zu glanzvollen "Rat Pack"-Zeiten wurden die großen drei der Sixties gern so eingegeigt: "Frank Sinatra, coming directly from New York, Sammy Davis jun., coming directly from Las Vegas, Dean Martin, coming directly from the Bar."
Aber: Wie hätte der Mann, der 40 Jahre zur ersten Garnitur der Traumfabrik zählte, gut 80 Filme und knapp 200 Songs auswerfen und bravourös bewältigen können, wäre er tatsächlich der "Little Ole Winedrinker me" gewesen, als der er sich selbst so gern darstellte?
Sein erster Volltreffer in den Charts, „That’s Amore“ (1953), war ihm offenbar in den italienischen Knochen zutiefst peinlich. Die Zeile "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie" brachte er stets nur gequält über die Lippen. Eine seelenverwandte Parallele zu Frank Sinatra, dem sein "Strangers in the Night" als "Date zweier Schwuler auf einem Bahnhof" vom Herzen zuwiderlief.
1000 Flaschen Scotch Jahresbedarf
Nun: Selbst (oder gerade) nüchterne Freunde und Weggefährten Martins schätzen seinen Jahresbedarf an Scotch (Lieblingsmarke: J&B) auf 1000 Flaschen. Insider haben zudem 1500 Sexualpartnerinnen errechnet. "Die Frauen", soll er konstatiert haben, "lieben mich, weil ich jede streichle, als ob sie meine letzte wäre."
Dagegen steht die explizite Expertise der ungekrönten Klatschkönigin der seinerzeitigen Hollywood-Tage, Elsa Maxwell: "Dean Martin ist ein ausgemachtes Ekel. Ich glaube, seine 18 Oldtimer-Autos in der Garage liebt er mehr als jede seiner Frauen. Ich frage mich, in welche Kurven diese Flasche auf zwei Beinen mehr vernarrt ist."

Geliebter Sohn
Dean Martins Rückzug von dieser Welt begann 1987, als er seinen geliebten Sohn Dino, der bei einem Flugzeugunglück ums Leben gekommen war, beerdigen musste. Der Verlust löste eine anhaltende Depression aus, die sich in einer verstärkten Gleichgültigkeit sich und der Umwelt gegenüber ausdrückte.

Rückzug nach dem Tod des geliebten Sohnes Dino
Sein Freund Sinatra wollte ihn ins Leben zurückholen, plante eine tröstliche Tournee zusammen mit ihm und Sammy Davis jr. "Wir können uns einen Zug mieten, der uns quer durch die USA bringt, mit einem eigenen Speise- und einem eigenen Barwaggon", versuchte Sinatra seinen Freund, der in Agonie verfiel, zu motivieren.
Die Sache mit dem Zug wurde abgeblasen, die Tournee durch die USA fand aber statt. Doch Dean Martin war nur am Anfang, gedankenverloren, mit dabei, bald musste er durch die nicht minder alkoholgefährdete, aber immerhin noch transportable und herzeigbare Liza Minnelli ersetzt werden. Der viele Gin, auf den Martin umgestiegen war – und den er noch konsequenter als jeden Whiskey zuvor – in sich hineingoss, forderte seinen Tribut.

Schon 1991 war er mitAlzheimer diagnostiziert worden, im September 1993 zudem mit Lungenkrebs. Sein Körper hielt das erstaunlich lange aus, doch die letzten Bilder, die vor seinem Tod in diversen Bars aufgenommen wurden und die um die Welt gingen, zeigten einen ausgemergelten Mann, der nur noch wenig Ähnlichkeiten mit jenem strahlenden balzenden "Crooner" hatte, als den man ihn seit den 1940er-Jahren – scheinbar für alle Zeiten – vor Augen hatte. Trotz seines fragwürdigen Lebenswandels wurde Dean Martin 78 Jahre alt.

Zuletzt entfloh er dem Krankenhaus in Los Angeles, um daheim in Würde zu sterben.
Nur geladene Gäste – wie Jerry Lewis oder Shirley MacLaine – hatten Zutritt, als er auf dem "Westwood Village Memorial Park" beerdigt wurde. Der "King of Cool" war am ersten Weihnachtsfeiertag 1995 in seiner Villa in Beverly Hills erbärmlich erstickt.

Das „Rat Pack“ plus Bing Crosby und Peter Falk im Mafia-Milieu von Chicago zu Beginn der 1930er. Martin überzeugt als – nicht einmal singender – witziger Gangster.
Die vier Söhne der Katie Elder (1964)
Deans zweiter Film (nach „Rio Bravo“, 1959) neben dem krebskranken John Wayne litt unter den klimatischen Bedingungen in Mexiko. Eine Qual für alle Beteiligten.
Todfeinde (1968)
Poker-Duell auf höchster Ebene mit Robert Mitchum, der Martin als diabolischer Priester fordert. Die früh verstorbene Western-Blondine Inger Stevens ist zwar mit dabei, stört aber kaum.
