And likes as a cherry is put on top of a hot fudge sundae as a special finishin' touch, so today's post of Dino-love puts a very very cool concludin' touch to our

Today's Dino-devotion comes from the pad "John Stevens Band's." Mr. Stevens,22, is a risin' star on today's pop vocal scene, gettin' his big break bein' featured on "American Idol" at the tender age of sixteen....where he became a finalist on season three.

Well, as you will read below, John is a huge devotee of our Dino....even bein' known as "Teen Martin" by his devoted fans while on American Idol. Here are just a few of Mr. Steven's thrillin' thoughts on our Dino...

"......no one was as smooth and charismatic as Dino! He could take any lyric and any melody and make it sound as if he was the first one to sing it right then and there. He could make it seem like he was coming up with the words as he went along."

"Dean sings all of these songs with such charm and charisma that once you start listening you won't be able to stop. He draws you right into the heart of song, forgetting about what you were doing in the real world. You are transported into a world where it's just you and him. That is the magic of what Dino does."

Likes how great is it pallies, to find such a youthful talented star likes John Stevens so so openly sharin' his adulation of our King of Cool. Can't tell you how much I loves findin' so so many youthful mods likes Mr. Stevens who are puttin' a huge accent on our beloved Dino...and as we know, such devotion certainly will lead many of Steven's peers to comin' to knowin', lovin' and honorin' our Dino....in fact John is hugely encouragin' of his readers turnin' on to the Dino-sounds...

John Stevens Band's

Feb 22 Teen Martin: My Love For What Dean Could Do!

Here I am talking about the great male interpreters of the Great American Songbook and leaving a few out. I've discussed Sammy Davis Jr., Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, and of course Frank Sinatra but what about the "King of Cool", Dean Martin.

When I was on American Idol, many of my fans created the nickname "Teen Martin". Teen being because I was only 16 at the time. I was honored because, out of all of the men listed above, no one was as smooth and charismatic as Dino! He could take any lyric and any melody and make it sound as if he was the first one to sing it right then and there. He could make it seem like he was coming up with the words as he went along.

If you are unfamiliar with who Dean Martin is and/or some of his tunes, you most likely have heard his voice and never knew it was him. His recordings grace many soundtracks such as Casino, Analyze This, The Sopranos, Payback, The Big Lebowski, Vegas Vacation, Swingers, and many more. Some of his most popular tunes are:

You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You

Everybody Loves Somebody

Sway

Volare

That's Amore

The majority of his American Songbook recordings is highly romantic which was probably why it was so well received and continues to be used and played today. If you don't have any Dean Martin in your music library I suggest you get "Dino: The Essential Dean Martin" album. It is a great compilation of his classic hits with some tunes you might not know, plus some live tracks.

For the most part, everyone knows the tunes listed above. But what you should research and listen to are the lesser known pearls of his career. Some of my favorite recordings are from the albums "This Time I'm Swingin'" and "Pretty Baby".

"This Time I'm Swingin'" was arranged by my favorite vocal arranger Nelson Riddle. Mr. Riddle is the same man who arranged for Sinatra when he was at Capitol Records, and Ella Fitzgerald for her Verve Songbook collection, among many other vocalists. This album has many great tunes such as

On the Street Where You Live

I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face

I Can't Believe that You're In Love With Me

Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone

"Pretty Baby" is the other album that I enjoy on a regular basis. It is a more relaxed album containing some great arrangements of Dean Martin backed by a vocal quartet. The charm of the songs they are singing really shines on:

I Can't Give You Anything But Love

Sleepy Time Gal

Nevertheless

Dean sings all of these songs with such charm and charisma that once you start listening you won't be able to stop. He draws you right into the heart of song, forgetting about what you were doing in the real world. You are transported into a world where it's just you and him. That is the magic of what Dino does.

Along with his incredible career as a vocalist, Dean Martin was an accomplished actor acting in such classics as "Robin & The Seven Hoods", "The Young Lions", & "Ocean's 11"(the original). He also had a very popular Variety Show that you've probably seen infomercials for. Those are the ones with Regis Philbin. Speaking of Regis...he is another avid Dean Martin fan, actually owning the chair that Dean Martin used on his Variety show. When I was on Regis & Kelly, after American Idol, I had the honor of sitting in the chair when Regis sang "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" with me. It was an unforgettable experience.

If you've never checked out his music, please do so, you won't regret it!

And I'll leave you with a great lyric from one of my favorite Dean Martin songs.

"The Future's brighter, when hearts are lighter so Smile, Smile, Smile!"

AT THE HOME OF DANNY G: VACATIONIN' STARRIN' DINO!

Hello again pals o' mine! As promised, I wanted to share one more quick Dino-experience with all my fellow Dino-holics.

Our third day in the "Sunshine State" was arranged to lead the Danny G. family to Universal Studios. Lots of fun! Big coasters! Crazy motion simulators! Super heroes everywhere!!!

Anyway, I'm walkin' down this street in the middle of an "Old Hollywood" type setting. There was the Classic Monster Cafe and a Motion Picture Studio tour. All kinds of great Hollywood themed attractions. So as I'm walkin', I look down and noticed that I'm strollin' on The Walk of Fame! Really cool! I just so happened to be standin' on "The Jer". Jerry Lewis.

Now c'mon pallies, if this isn't a sign of good things to come then I don't know what is! I thought to myself..."Self, wouldn't it be sooo totally cool if I could find "The Man"!!!

So I start walkin'...and walkin'. It wasn't more than 20 secs when I struck Dino-gold! DEAN MARTIN!!! I think Dino's spirit grabbed my hand...pulled me down the street...and slapped me on the back and said "Look down pallie, there I am"! Cool cool stuff. I snapped a shot to share with you pals & gals. Hope you get as much a thrill as I did.

Till next time friends...keep the vino and the Dino flowin'!!!

On This Day In Dino-history: our Dino and Cathy with the Candified K Divorced

Hey pallies,
likes on this 24th day of Dino-month we turn to clock back to the year 1976 to remember 'nother ultra important day in Dino-history. For on February 24, 1976 our Dino cut the strin's attached to him by Cathy with the candified K as his divorce from her was finalized. Thus ended the last of our great man's three marriages, and for the next almost twenty years our Dino lived and loved as a free man.

Many of us Dino-holics believe that Dino and marriage just didn't mix. Thinks our Dino-holic pallie Danny G. said it well in his recent Sunday Serenade with Dino post "I'm Not The Marrying Kind"......

"I think he should have stayed single! Why did he settle down? Obviously he loved his wife/wives, but c'mon pallies...Dean Martin....Marriage???!!! They just don't sound right together! I think he had so much amore to share that it was absolutely impossible for him to be tied down to one person. Now don't get me wrong, Dino's love songs are truly the most beautiful and romantic tunes that this Dino-holic has ever heard, but the "playboy" type songs are definately my fav's! Which leads me to my song choice for this "Sunday Serenade"..."I'm Not the Marrying Kind". To me, no other song represents the TRUE Dino as much as this cool cool number. He dosen't love one...he loves ALL!"

Keeps lovin' our Dino pallies, and likes make note of this important Dino-date. Gotta 'fess up likes it was the pallies at the Dean Martin Timeline (clicks on tag of this Dino-post to goes there) that helped remind me of this Dino-historical detail. Dino-loved, DMP

February 24, 1976 Catherine and Dean's divorce is final.

AT THE HOME OF DANNY G.: VACATIONIN' WITH OUR DINO

Hey pallies! Just got back from the Sunshine state. Great to be home! Travelin' with a wife, two kids, one dog, one niece and a crazy sister-in-law would probably tempt the average guy to bail out the exit door... even at 5,000 feet!!!

However, I had one more very special, very very cool companion...Dino. Wouldn't leave home with out my trusty Ipod! Dean Martin and vodka definitely got me through that flight! Anyway pals, had a great time. Even have a couple quick Dino-related stories to share with my good friends at ilovedinomartin.

We were invited, very generously, to stay with my in-laws during our visit. I arrived the first day to a quiet, calm beach house. Very mellow and serene. This wasn't workin' for me. To my glorious surprise, the house came equipped with a cd player. I noticed a few of my home made Dino discs that I put together for my wifey's folks for there winter drive down to FLA.. Obviously I popped one in immediately.

Then I noticed it... A BUILT-IN IPOD DOCKING STATION!!! I just hit pay-dirt! Threw on my "pod" and the rest is Dino-history! That house was swoonin' & croonin' for the rest of the week! My in-laws loved it! We were grillin' in the sun...Dean Martin fillin' the air waves...and not a care in the world. Just doesn't get much better than that pallies!

I have to share one fast follow-up to this. The next day we ended up in a little community called "Old Town". Very cool place. All old styled restaurants with 50's music playing. Old shops with memorabilia from "the good ol' days". After a little searchin', I was lucky enough to find a copy of an autographed pic of our great man. Only $6.95!!! How could I refuse that?! Anyway, I brought it home and placed it on the mirror in our room.

Then I had a callin'! I got the pic off the mirror and balanced it on the Ipod player! Let me pause here for a minute pals to explain...I'M A DINO-HOLIC!!! Now back to the story already in progress...This got a big laugh and became the center of attention...for a week anyway. The closest thing this Dino-nut has ever had to a Dean Martin concert right in his own living room!!! Ha ha ha!!!

I have one more Dino-experience that I will share next time pals. Till then...keep the vino and the Dino flowin'!!!

Always,
Danny G.

House of Payne star Doc Shaw: A positive role model for young men

Doc Shaw (Photo courtesy of Abrams Artists Agency)

Several weeks ago during a talk show, talented actor and Atlanta native, Doc Shaw was interviewed by the host. When asked who his favorite performer is/was, young Mr. Shaw said Dean Martin. His favorite song by Dean Martin is "I Wish You Love". He also shared he loved the original "Rat Pack", and their style. The "Rat Pack" included Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford, and were very popular in the 1950's and 60's. After Doc Shaw's answer, the audience was so silent you could hear a pin drop...and then applause. It was evident this young man marches to the beat of his own drum and does not conform to the norms of his peers.

Doc Shaw can be seen in the role of Malik Payne, in Tyler Perry's House of Payne on Wednesday evenings.

Born on April 24, 1994, Larramie (Doc) Shaw is the only child of Larry and Tammy Shaw. From an early age, everyone knew Larramie was special. His educator grandparents named him Doc and soon Doc embarked on a career as a print model initiated by his father. Tragically, when Doc was two, his father was killed in an automobile accident.

Print modeling was soon followed by commercials, and eventually he was chosen for the role of Malik.

In 2009, Shaw was awarded an NAACP Image Award, Young Artist for Best Supporting Young Actor in a Television Series (Drama or Comedy) , and won a NAMIC Award (National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communication) for Best Performer in a comedy series.

CROONING TOWARD OBLIVION: DEAN MARTIN (1917-1995)

By RICHARD CORLISS Monday, Jan. 08, 1996

DID ANYONE EVER CARE LESS about being in show business than Dean Martin? Singing, acting, hosting a TV program, headlining in Las Vegas--these were just things people paid Dino to do when he wasn't on the links. His old partner Jerry Lewis said that in preparing for their '50s TV show, "we had this great arrangement: he played golf and I worked." There, and in movies, and on the long-running Dean Martin Show, the drill was the same. He would show up when the camera had to roll. Rehearsal was for wimps. To practice meant you cared. And, as director Vincente Minnelli said, "Dean would rather die than have you believe he cared."

Audiences cared for him, though. He had been a star since 1946, when he and Lewis teamed up in a musical-comedy act. For a decade they dominated nightclubs, concert stages, films and TV, while Dean's record--That's Amore, Memories Are Made of This--went gold. When the duo split, Martin rebounded as a solo movie star and, for a few years, a fine actor. He had more hit tunes in the '60s and '70s, anchored a nine-year TV franchise, appeared whenever he felt like it in casinos with his Rat Pack pals. Last week, after he died at 78 of acute respiratory failure, lights on the Vegas Strip were dimmed for 10 minutes in his memory.

Martin lasted so long by embracing show-biz contradictions, then shrugging them off. For a start, he was a traditional crooner who learned intonation from Crosby and salesmanship from Jolson. Yet there was a hint in his gestures (eyes closed in ecstasy, arms stretched out imploringly) that he was parodying the very idea of crooner; he was a mellow modernist. You could also peg Dino as an anachronism, a Joe E. Lewis saloon-lush type, the party animal in a tux. Or maybe he was the first slacker, elevating sloth to a Zen art. The stupefaction he radiated on his TV show--the Golddiggers dancing around him as wildly as Jer used to, Dean standing there like a lamppost after a car wreck--made him the ideal m.c. for the years when American industry and entertainment stumbled into decadence.

Dino Paul Crocetti stumbled into eminence. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, he left school in the 10th grade, boxed for a while, dealt cards at the local gaming houses, sang a little. His progress was slow until he met Lewis, then just 20. "I was in love with him immediately," Lewis said in a 1992 TV retrospective of their partnership. What Lewis saw in Martin was the first sexpot straight man, a perfect complement to Jer's goony girly-boy. The two clicked immediately.

In eight years they made 16 films, most of them labored and plot heavy. But as a live act, Martin and Lewis were awesome. Their appearances on NBC's Colgate Comedy Hour made the viewer a co-conspirator in their anarchy; they broke the "fourth wall" as blithely as if it were a cardboard prop, and incorporated their famous arguments into gag lyrics for their duets. They worked literally nose to nose: Jerry would lick Dean's face; Dean would flick his cigarette ashes in Jerry's mouth (and lick Jer's face). It was primal therapy on the 12-inch screen, stripping bare a volatile marriage in all its grotesque intimacy--a bizarre comic display of love and resentment. No way it could last.

"He was schlepping me through life," Lewis said in 1992, "and I was his luggage." That's very sweet. But to think that Dean carried Jerry is the biggest joke of their career. Lewis, a genius at playing an idiot, was the brains of the act, Martin the gonads. So it surprised some that when the crooner went solo in 1956, he not only could get movie roles but could fill them handsomely. They were, to be sure, tailored to his talent--alcoholics and playboys--and in them he moved easily: as the cowardly G.I. in The Young Lions or the sodden gambler in Some Came Running. He spends most of 1959's Rio Bravo, his best film, staring mournfully at a whiskey bottle he'd like to suck dry. Defeat glazes his eyes; it's the rare movie portrait of an alcoholic that skirts both sensation and sentiment.

After that, Dino coasted. He became a Southerner on record, with countrified hits like Everybody Loves Somebody and Houston, and a Westerner onscreen--he loved to sit on a horse and ride to Nogales, or nowhere. Perhaps nowhere was his chosen destination. To Nick Tosches, his biographer, Martin was a nihilist hero. Instead of seeing mankind surrounded by a void, Tosches argued, Dino found the void within himself, and called it home.

Maybe something could touch him; the 1987 death of his son Dean Paul in an Air National Guard plane crash cued more drinking in Martin, more severe solitude. With three marriages far behind him, he spent his final years dining alone nightly at an Italian eatery in Beverly Hills. At home this past Christmas Eve, he was attended only by a nurse. She gave him a last drink--water!--and he died. No grieving, please: the cowboy crooner finally rode off into the oblivion he always seemed to crave. And, as Dino might have observed, it beats working.

Guber went on the movie set to tell Dean Martin to shape up

Hey pallies, sometimes it is likes so amazin' how one Dino-post will links to 'nother. On this 16th day of Dino-amore-month, we goes to the pad "Venture Beat" where Mr. Lou Hoffman,CEO of The Hoffman Agency, reviews the new book, "Tell To Win" by Mr. Peter Guber.

Among Mr. Guber's credentials is that he was head of Columbia Pictures, now Sony Pictures Entertainment. And today's Dino-post shares a tale of Guber's encounter with our Dino and the frankie when our great man was workin' on a picture for Columbia. Seems that Guber had some bone to pick with our beloved Dino and he went on the set to confront our Dino and to tell him to "shape up." Well, the frankie intervened and simply proved the point that Miss Shirley MacLaine made in yesterday's Dino-gram. As you recall Miss MacLaine said...
"People were basically afraid of Frank. They weren't afraid of Dean."
As you will read below you will see why pallies were frightened by the frankie.

Gotta say two thin's 'bout the frankie's action...certainly it shows his penchant for negative behaviour, but in the more possitive mode, it truly shows the frankie's deep love for our beloved Dino..but likes who among us Dinoholics wouldna done the same thin' to defend our great man....

Been searchin' the net for more info on this new book and this Dino-tale. When and if I comes up with me likes I will certainly shares it will all you dudes. To read this whole review, just clicks on the tagg of this Dino-post. ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to Mr. Peter Guber, Mr. Lou Hoffman, and the pallies at Venture Beat for sharin' this Dino-vignette with the larger Dino-world. Book Review: “Tell to Win,” by Peter Guber
February 11, 2011 | Lou Hoffman

We learn Guber went on the movie set to tell Dean Martin to shape up only to have Frank Sinatra intervene with a “Who the hell are you?” before physically pushing him out the door.

"....MacLaine said. "People were basically afraid of Frank. They weren't afraid of Dean."

Hey pallies, likes the Dino-amorin' just keeps flowin' here at ilovedinomartin. Today's Dino-devotion comes from an interview with Miss Shirley MacLaine by Mr. Glenn Miller of the Fort Myers' News-Press. Miss MacLaine was scheduled to do "An Evening With Shirley MacLaine" at the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts and she reflects back on her life and times includin' her association with the Rat Pack.

Below is the pertinent portion of said interview where Miss Shirley speaks her Dino-love and the difference between the frankie and our beloved Dino......

"They would get me up on stage and then everybody would get drunk," MacLaine said. "It was an amazing thing to watch. Frank would tell a joke and nobody would laugh and Dean would tell a joke and everybody laughed."

She has an explanation.

"Dean would say to Frank 'because you're just not funny,'" MacLaine said. "People were basically afraid of Frank. They weren't afraid of Dean."

Likes MacLaine shares in a nutshell why we can call Dino "our Dino"....even "our beloved Dino" 'cause likes pallies we knows that we aren't and never have to be "afraid of Dean." We knows that not only do we loves our Dino...but our Dino loves us as well!

ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to Mr. Glenn Miller and the pallies at the News-Press for sharin' this interview with the larger Dino-world...and thanks Miss Shirley MacLaine for sharin' your continued Dino-devotion with us as well! If you woulda likes to read all that Miss Shirley has to say, please clicks on the tagg of this Dino-message. And likes on this 15th day of Dino-amore-month, keeps lovin' our Dino!

Shirley MacLaine coming here to talk about life

Written by
GLENN MILLER

Ask her about her favorite co-stars and she'll respond with names from the past and today.

"It's a toss-up between Frank, Dean, the three Jacks," MacLaine said.

That would be Sinatra, Martin and the three Jacks - Lemmon, Nicholson and Black. MacLaine and Black are in "Bernie," which is scheduled for release this year.

"He's adorable and so nice," MacLaine said.

She respects the finest actors and directors working in 2011 as well as the legends she worked with when she was young.

She thinks Chris Nolan, the director of "Inception," should have been nominated for an Oscar even though she said "I'm not sure what ("Inception") was about."

MacLaine, who got her start as a ballet dancer, loved "Black Swan," a ballet movie directed by Darren Aronofsky.

"I loved what Aronofsky did with the dark realities of ballerinas," MacLaine said.

She said Jacki Weaver, nominated for best actress in a supporting role in "Animal Kingdom," gave a "cobra of a performance."

MacLaine praised several other nominees.

But she'll always have a warm spot for the Rat Pack.

Sunday Serenade with Dino: "Im Not The Marrying Kind"

Hey pallies, likes on this day-before-Dino-amore-day, ilovedinomartin is so so pleased to share guest Dino-pattier Danny G.'s special Dino-amorin' edition of Sunday Serenade with Dino featurin' our great man singin' his great amorin' classic, "Im Not The Marrying Kind."

Danny G., as regular readers of this here Dino-blog know, is one sold out Dino-phile who likes can never ever gets 'nough of our Dino and has been featured here with his own Dino-column, "At The Home Of Danny G." Remember Danny-o's outstandin' Dino-winter-time post that featured his little girlpallie Stella's Dino-gingerbread art?

Well, ilovedinomartin is ever so Dino-delighted to share with you that followin' some fun in the sun for the Danny G. fam, Danny has promised to returned refreshed and renewed to share several pieces of Dino-devotion emanatin' from his Dino-sanctuary tagged mantown in the lower level of his home pad.

In the mean time pallies, likes enjoys some Dino-reflections by our pallie Danny G. on the amazin' Dino-truth sung by our beloved Dino in "I'm Not The Marrying Kind."
Dino-amorin', DMP

Let me start by sayin' "Happy Dino-Amore Day" to all my pallies at ilovedinomartin! I thought I'd put a little Dino-spin on the usual Valentine's Day this year. Instead of pickin' a slam-dunk love song from our great man, i.e. "That's Amore", "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime", "Love Me, Love Me", etc. etc.., I took a different approach. I poured myself a scotch on the rocks, put on my ipod (Dean Martin only...of course) and really listened to what Dino was sayin'. I think he should have stayed single! He dosen't love one...he loves ALL! This tune really brings out the bachelor in me! Ha Ha...don't tell my wife. (wink wink)! Have a wonderful Dino-Amore Day everyone! Keep the vino and the Dino flowin'!!!

Danny G.

I go my way alone free and easy like a rolling stone
I am strictly on my own not the marrying kind
I'm happy being free no girl gonna put a rain on me
It's always gotta be I'm not the marrying kind
I've been known to run a mile when they try to lead me down the aisle
So if you want me to stay a while don't start changing my style
It's always been my plan to stay single any way I can

I'm just a happy man I'm not the marrying kind
I'm not the marrying kind
It's always been my plan...
Not the marrying kind I'm not the marrying kind
(Not the marrying not the marrying not the marrying kind)

One year later, at the height of Beatlemania, Martin would knock the Fab Four off the top of the charts with his hit single "Everybody Loves Somebody."

A famed star of the silver screen, television icon, Grammy® Award-winning singing sensation and member of the renowned Rat Pack, Dean Martin's show business legacy is legendary. So uniquely stylized, highly identifiable and crooned with the smooth approach that was his very own inimitable vocal style, his musical career features such classics as "Ain't That A Kick In The Head," "That's Amore," "Mambo Italiano," "Everybody Loves Somebody," "Volare," "Sway" and more, releasing dozens of album recordings over his lifetime. Starring in dozens of well-known movies including Ocean's Eleven, Rio Bravo, The Caddy, and Who Was That Lady?, for which Martin received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor, coupled with a highly popular television career, Dean Martin certainly earned his nickname as the "King of Cool."

The Second Disc
Expanded and Remastered Music News

How “Cool” Is New Dean Martin Box Set?

Don’t move those Bear Family boxes over quite yet, Dean Martin fans. Between 1997 and 2001, the German label issued four remarkable boxes collecting virtually every note ever recorded by Dean Martin not only for Capitol and Reprise (his two most famous label associations) but for Diamond, Embassy, Apollo, Warner Bros. and MCA. So what could a new box offer to collectors and fans?

On June 7, Hip-o will release a two-CD box set dedicated to the perennially cool singer and swinger in a hardcover photo album format. Cool Then, Cool Now is the latest Martin title to be released under the licensing agreement between Martin’s estate and Universal Music Group, parent of the Hip-o label. As original Reprise owner Frank Sinatra believed that artists should own their masters, the estate now controls his pal Martin’s Reprise material. (This marks the second major Martin project of 2011; see The Second Disc’s review of the first one, The Very Best of the Rat Pack!) While the title of Cool Then, Cool Now is undoubtedly accurate, the box doesn’t break much new ground on the musical side. (A true career retrospective box with material from each label and era would be essential for those Martin fans looking for more than single-disc compilations but less than 30 discs from Bear Family! How a three- or four-CD treatment in that vein has eluded Martin this long is a mystery.)

Only 28 songs are spread over the two discs of Cool Then, Cool Now, the majority of which could fit on one CD alone. It’s to Hip-o’s credit that a handful of sides have been licensed from Capitol, meaning that “Memories Are Made of These,” That’s Amore” and “Volare” are all present along with Martin’s well-known Reprise hits. Of the tracks that originally appeared on Capitol, two are “duets” from Capitol’s posthumous Forever Cool, released in 2007. Reappearing here are Kevin Spacey’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” with the actor in his best Bobby Darin mode, and Robbie Williams’ “Please Don’t Talk About Me When I’m Gone.” Only one true rarity is present, the 1985 MCA single “L.A. Is My Home.” As this track has only otherwise seen CD release as part of Bear Family’s massive Lay Some Happiness on Me box, it’s particularly nice to see it included. None of Martin’s other late-career singles, including its B-side “Drinking Champagne,” make an appearance. While more lesser-known tracks would have been appreciated by collectors, the line-up, while skimpy, is well-considered and should appeal to casual fans. (In fairness, much of Martin’s album LP catalogue is now unavailable, with Collectors’ Choice’s Reprise reissue series now out-of-print, and its Capitol series disappearing quickly.) Besides the big hits, the box includes Dino’s laid-back versions of songs better-associated with other artists: “Mambo Italiano” (Rosemary Clooney), “C’est Si Bon” (Eartha Kitt) and “King of the Road” (Roger Miller) among them. What else does Cool Then, Cool Now offer? Hit the jump for an answer, plus the complete track listing with discographical details.

The appeal of Cool Then, Cool Now might well depend on one’s fondness for the package itself. The hardcover book promises to contain photos grouped in five chapters: The Entertainer, The Family Man, The Sportsman, The Man-About-Town and The Movie Star. Tributes will be printed from friends and admirers such as Spacey, Williams, Arnold Palmer, Shirley MacLaine and Martin’s old partner Jerry Lewis. Martin’s daughter Gail Martin Downey also contributes. In a fine touch, the box itself bears both the Reprise and Capitol logos on its cover artwork.

Cool Then, Cool Now retails for $49.98 but can be pre-ordered at a considerably lower price here at Amazon.com. It arrives in stores on June 7.

The Dean Martin Double Feature – Who Was That Lady / How To Save A Marriage

By Save Relationships

Throughout his long career, with a cocktail in one hand and a cigarette in the other, Dean Martin was the iconic epitome of the carefree, smooth operator. The Dean Martin Double Feature includes Who Was That Lady?, co-starring Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh and How to Save a Marriage (and Ruin Your Life), co-starring Stella Stevens. Dino uses his inimitable style to demonstrate what made the ‘60s swing with these wacky comedies of marital mix-ups. In Who Was That Lady?, Martin stars opposite real-life husband and wife Tony Curtis (Some Like it Hot, Don’t Make Waves) and Janet Leigh (Touch of Evil, Psycho). Curtis enlists the help of his friend Martin when his wife (Leigh) demands a divorce after catching him kissing one of his students. The guys cook up a cover story that Curtis is working undercover for the FBI, and that the kiss was part of a sting to catch a spy. The gullible Leigh buys the wild fabrication and later, unwittingly touches off a melee that is filmed by TV news.

Hey pallies, today is likes a very very special Dino-day particularly for this Dino-holic. It was likes on the 8th of Dino-amore-month in the year 2006 that the Yahoo Group ilovedinomartin was first formed. The ilovedinomartin Dino-dialogue pad predated the advent of this here ilovedinomartin Dino-blog by almost a year.

Durin' the course of the five years that ilovedinomartin has existed, pallies have generated over 22,600 Dino-grams of pure Dino-devotion...the hugest number of Dino-responses that any known Dino-pad on the net has ever produced. And this honor is quite remarkable seein' how the ilovedinomartin yahoo pad has never ever had much more then a dozen pallies (at most) as members.

This humble little Dino-pad has never been interested in numbers of members for numbers sake....only invitin' the truly Dino-devoted into Dino-membership...and not bein' afraid to often remove members who have failed to share faithfully in the Dino-action.

On this fifth anniversary, we particularly wants to lift up the followin' Dino-devotees who are keepin' the Dino-light glowin' Dino-bright at ilovedinomartin:
Ky, Levi, Shaun, and Clark.....a quartet of pallies who are all likes so so sold out to our Dino. Likes without their Dino-devotion, ilovedinomartin woulda be just likes most every other Dino-patterin' pads...goin' likes no where.

And, likes on this fifth anniversary, the ilovedinomartin Dino-dialougin' pad invites true Dino-amorin' Dino-devotees to consider joinin' forces with this Dino-only focused Yahoo Group. To checks out the Dino-action at ilovedinomartin Yahoo, just clicks on the tagg of this Dino-post. Hey pallies, likes as we round out our first full week of Dino-amore-month I am likes so so pumped to be sharin' some wonderful Dino-amorin' from Västmanland, Sweden...and likes we all knows how much the Sweds knows 'bout lovin.

From the chick blogg "Welcome To Elisabeth" comes some of the most lovin' Dino-homagin' by a lady tagged Lismarie. Seems Lismarie simply gots smitten early on by our Dino, as she opines... "since the first time I heard him sing "That's amore", that voice deep, rich and smooth..." It is clear from Miss Lismarie's Dino-prose that she is truly truly one sold out chick to our Dino and ain't afraid to let the world know her deep, pure, and true Dino-passion.

And pallies, checks out no only Miss Lismarie's stellar choice of Dino-clips, but the wonderful wonderful way that she is homagin' our Dino with her Dino-art...how great to see Dino-devotion shown in this artistic way!

Woulda have to agree with Miss Lismarie's Dino-reflection...."He is often described as easygoing and good natured, he loved to laugh and make others laugh, he never seemed to take himself too seriously and I wonder if he ever realised how gifted he was." These words ring so Dino-true to those of us who are deeply devoted to our great man...there never was and never will be anyone as wonderful as our wonderful Dino!

Truly in this season of special Dino-amore, it is so so refreshin' to find such profound Dino-testimony and from Sweden no less...continuin' to prove that Dino-amorin' knows no bounds! Thanks to Miss Lismarie for sharin' her love of our beloved Dino with her readers and thus helpin' other pallies to grow in their amorin' of our Dino. Dino..That's Amore

I've been in love with Dean Martin since the first time I heard him sing "That's amore", that voice deep, rich and smooth... I especially love the Italian songs.
"The man who plays the mandolino" is a favourite it always puts a big smile on my face so is "On an evening in Roma","Volare", "Mambo Italiano" and of course "That's amore" and many many more.

He had a very long and successful acting/singer/television career spanning more than 40 years starting out at 16 as a prizefighter with the name "Kid Crochet" and among other things gas station worker and a card shark. Fame came when in 1946 he teamed up with Jerry Lewis, became an actor and starred with Lewis in a long running television variety show, the comedy duo broke up in 1957 and Dino went on to international fame starring in films like "The young lions"1958 and "Rio Bravo"1959 , a succession of films followed, in 1960 he starred in "Oceans 11" with the legendary Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davies Jr, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.

He also went on to entertain his audience on television with "The Dean Martin show"1965 ... later renamed "The Dean Martin Comedy Hour" and then again "The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts" 1973-1984 which became one of the most successful shows in the history of television roasting the likes of James Stewart, Frank Sinatra, John Wayne and Orson Welles.

He was well known for his trademark cigarette and glass of alcohol during his famous Rat Pack performances, much of the booze was actually apple juice this secret came of after the Variety show ended, told by his son Dean Paul Martin "that his father could not have performed if he had really drank that much liquor" He once said " If people want to think I get drunk and stay out all night, let 'em. That's how I got here, you know"

He is often described as easygoing and good natured, he loved to laugh and make others laugh, he never seemed to take himself too seriously and I wonder if he ever realised how gifted he was.

He loved westerns and spent his later years watching them on television the older the better.

The song "Everybody needs somebody sometime" the theme song for his television series and a billboard number one in 1964 is written on his tombstone.
Here are some of my favourite clips with Dino

I even attempted painting his portrait last year it's hard trying to capture someone you love and know so well, the light in the photo isn't the best too much shine in the black, I'm still contemplating the background shall i leave it like it is or...some people miss the cigarette well there's no room unless I stick it in his mouth.. lol.

Hey pallies, welcome to a special Dino-amore-month edition of Sunday Serenade with Dino, and likes what coulda be more appro for this first Sunday of February then our beloved Dino spellin' as he's singin' "L.O.V.E."

From the opennin' moments where our Dino runs swiftly down the steps and carefreely skips on to the set, to the endin' as our great man claps boldly for himself, loosin' his ever-present cigarette (on purpose!), usin' his little pinkies to whistle and proclaimin', "Oh, this kid sings beau-ti-ful.. woo...he sings beau-ti-ful!"....we knows that our Dino is havin' likes the times of his life as he shares his teachin's on amore!

Our Dino, as usual, throws likes his whole self into his performin'...watch him as he moves his whole body to the song...his arms, his legs...and makin' suggestive moves that brings huge laughter from the studio audience! And likes looks at the looks on his face...grinnin' and laughin'....havin' a blast as he articulates each and every lovin' syllable of each and every lovin' word.

No one ever has, no one ever will have such fun croonin' a tune...and makin' hundreds of thousands of dollars for havin' the time of his life!

And yet, and yet pallies as our Dino is makin' so so much fun...he is also sharin' his wisest of the wise Dino-philosophy of makin' love. All that our Dino wants to give to us, his devoted pallies, is LOVE...and all he wants to receive back from us is LOVE as well.

Receives some Dino-lovin' as you watch and listen to our beloved Dino singin' L.O.V.E. Gives some lovin' back to our Dino for his amazin' lovin' of us pallies!

"I would kill to be at one of those nightclubs where Dean Martin was crooning."

Hey pallies, likes on this fifth day of Dino-amore-month, ilovedinomartin is pleased to 'gain be puttin' the accent on a young dude who is likes puttin' a heavy accent on our Dino!

From the pad, "IMG Performance Institute Blog," from a feature interview by Mr. Dan Tierney, comes the 'citin' news of one Anthony Castonzo, hugely successful left tackle for Boston College and currently likes one of the NFL Draft’s top hopefuls. Likes if you clicks on the tagg of this Dino-gram you will learn many facinatin' facts 'bout Mr. Castonzo....such as he majored in biochemistry 'cause he has a strong interest in medical research.

But, likes of course, what caught this Dino-holic's attention is the fact that star football player Castonzo loves our Dino. When quired by Mr. Tierney 'bout his taste in music, the up and comin' hugely talented Castonzo, so so boldly proclaimed, as you will also read below.....

"I would kill to be at one of those nightclubs where Dean Martin was crooning. I love them both, but I’d take Dean over Frank Sinatra."

Simply does my Dino-heart such delight to hear 'nother of today's youth who has come to know, love, and honor our Dino to the amazin' point of unabashly sharin' his Dino-passion with the world. And havin' such a role model as super college star Anthony Castonzo speakin' of his Dino-devotion certainly will draw many more of today's youngen's to that Dino-magic!

ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to the pallies at "IMG Performance Institute Blog"...'specially interviewer Mr. Dan Tierney for sharin' such great Dino-news. And huge thanks and much success in the NFL draft to Mr. Anthony Castonzo for his message of lovin' devotion to our beloved Dino! Dino-passionately, DMP

…five artists he’d pay to see perform: B.O.B., Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West. Do they have to be living? I would kill to be at one of those nightclubs where Dean Martin was crooning. I love them both, but I’d take Dean over Frank Sinatra. I love Sublime. I like pretty much everything, except country, which is unusual for a lineman.

"Dean didn't say much usually, but was unfailingly kind to fans when coming and going outside the restaurant."

Hey pallies, likes the dude's tag is Steve Cox and his claim to fame is that he is expert on all thin's 3 Stooges, but in a recent interview with Examiner.com Pop Culture proser Jeremy Roberts, Cox shares some lovin' Dino-memories of precious encounters with our great man at the Hamburger Hamlet.

On this fourth day of Dino-amore-month, ilovedinomartin is pleased to share the Dino-related portions of Roberts' interview with Cox tagged, "Only Fools Are Positive: In Conversation With Three Stooges' Author Steve Cox."

As I read Cox's Dino-remembrances it likes makes me likes so desirin' to have made the pilgrimage to Beverly Hills in the early 90's to have hung out at the Hamlet just waitin' to catch a glimpse of our beloved Dino. Doubt that I woulda ever have had the courage to say even a word to our great man...but likes just to have had the op to have been in his presence for a moment woulda filled me with such Dino-delight!

How blessed dudes likes Steve Cox are to have meet and interacted with our King of Cool. So enjoys readin' Mr. Cox's Dino-reflections...so so full of Dino-amore for Dino-sure! And, likes it thrills me to no Dino-end when Cox sez..... "Dean didn't say much usually, but was unfailingly kind to fans when coming and going outside the restaurant." "Unfailingly kind to fans"...what a wonderful way of payin' tribute to our beloved Dino who was so so lovin' to his fans.

ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to Mr. Jeremy Roberts and the pallies at Examiner.com for sharin' this with the wider Dino-world. To view this in it's original format, just clicks on the tagg of this Dino-gram. And, a big Dino-thanks as well to our pallie Danny G. who saw this first and sent it the ilovedinoamrtin way! Dino-devotedly, DMP

Name a few of those autographs you especially treasure.

Unusual things like that intrigue me. It’s difficult to pin down my favorites after thirty years of collecting. I have a really nice Dean Martin shot of he and I outside Hamburger Hamlet in Beverly Hills, and he signed it “Cheers! Dean Martin.” Simple and signed beautifully. It’s one of the few photos of myself I don’t mind glancing at once in a while.

How did you meet Dean Martin? Seems he had virtually retired from the public eye…

I met Dean Martin many times in the early 1990s because he would frequent the restaurant, Hamburger Hamlet in Beverly Hills as a regular thing for dinner on Sunday nights. Keep in mind, Hamburger Hamlet is not some hamburger joint, it's a really nice place to eat with a terrific bar with a beautiful, comfortable atmosphere.

He seemed to like the place immensely because he went there every Sunday night, almost religiously. I'd say hello sometimes in the restaurant and it was a common thing to see him sitting in the bar and having his usual angel hair pasta dinner and a drink, usually alone.

Most people did not bother him, but there were times when some fans overstayed their hello and the bartender would intercede. I saw that happen a few times. Or a celebrity would stop by and say hello.

I noticed Jerry Seinfeld very respectfully approaching him one evening and talking with him briefly. Also, Elizabeth Montgomery was having dinner there one evening and as she left she said hello and gave him a kiss on the cheek. (I realized later they'd made a movie together in the early ‘60s.)

Dean was not in good condition at that time, unfortunately. He moved very slowly like a 99 year old man with that old man shuffle and his body had just begun to deteriorate. But there he was on Sunday nights.

Dean didn't say much usually, but was unfailingly kind to fans when coming and going outside the restaurant. It was a treat to meet such a legend and talented guy like that.

One time I spoke with him about the Three Stooges and asked him to sign a photo I had of him with the Stooges from the 1963 western 4 For Texas, costarring Frank Sinatra, where he delivers the triple-slap to the guys. Dean said, "I was just givin' them what they gave everybody else."
