Dean Martin (born June 7, 1917 as Dino Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio, † December 25, 1995 in Beverly Hills, California) was an American singer, actor and entertainer of Italian descent. Martin became internationally known after the Second World War through his ten-year collaboration with comedian Jerry Lewis. After the dissolution of Martin & Lewis , Martin established himself as a solo artist on stage, on the screen and on television. He appeared regularly in Las Vegas until 1991, sang world hits like Memories Are Made of This and Everybody Loves Somebody (Sometime), and made more than 50 feature films, including Rio Bravo and Kiss Me, Fool, For a decade he presented on television the Dean Martin Show , which made him at the time the highest paid entertainer in the world. Together with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis jr. and some other artists he was in the 1960s, the so-called Rat Pack attributed. Because of his relaxed performances, he was considered King of Cool .

biography

Childhood and early years
Martin's father was the farm worker Gaetano Crocetti (1894-1967), born in Montesilvano, Italy, who emigrated to the United States in 1913, just as his brother had a few years before. Gaetano Crocetti, who became known as Guy from 1914, settled in the industrial town of Steubenville in the US Rust Belt and opened a hairdressing salon. Martin's mother was the Ohio-born Italian-born Angela "Angelina" Barr, b. Barra (1897-1966). They married in October 1914. One and a half years later, Guglielmo (later called William or Bill, 1916-1968) gave birth to her first child, and a year later on June 7, 1917 Dino was prematurely born as a second son.

Dino said he spoke only Italian until his fifth birthday; In retrospect, he called this a "Abruzzian dialect". At first he was having a hard time at school with English as a second language, leaving Wells High School , which he had previously visited only occasionally, after the tenth grade. The difficulties with the English language continued until he received language instruction from his first wife "Betty" in the early 1940s.

As a teenager, Martin went to different jobs. Among other things, he was a worker in one of Steubenville's steel mills, a milkman and a supermarket salesman. Temporarily he entered under the name "Kid Crochet" as a welterweight price welder. Martin repeatedly came into contact with Cosa Nostra , the local manifestation of organized crime. During Prohibition he helped with alcohol smuggling, and from 1936 he worked as a dealer (croupier) in an illegal casino in his hometown. He often sang aloud at the croupier table and was suggested by friends to earn money singing.

After some amateur appearances in the 1930s, Martin's career began in the fall of 1939 as a professional entertainer. It ended after 52 years with his last stage appearance in Las Vegas.

Martin's baptismal name was Dino Crocetti; he did not have a middle name at first. Only on the occasion of his first communion in 1928, he received the second name Paul, with which his later stage partner Jerry Lewis preferred to address him.

In the early years of his artistic career Martin performed under his birth name Dino Crocetti. Prior to a commitment in Cleveland gave him the band leader Ernie McKay in November 1939 the stage name Dino Martini, which should not - as occasionally indicated - the cocktail of the same name, but the then popular Italian opera tenor Nino Martini should remember. In November of the following year, it was at the behest of the bandleader Samuel "Sammy" Watkins the Americanized version Dean Martin, which he already officially made his name before the birth of his first child in 1942.

Dean Martin was married three times and had seven biological children, five of whom were at least temporarily also in show business footing. His family also included actor and entertainer Leonard "Bananas" Barr. He was the younger brother of Martin's mother.

Marriages and partnerships

Dean Martin's first wife was Elizabeth Anne "Betty" Martin, b. McDonald (* 1923, † 1989). The 1941 closed marriage was divorced in 1949. Two days after the divorce, Martin married the Florida-born Dorothy Jane "Jeanne" (also: "Jeannie") Biegger (born March 27, 1927, † August 24, 2016). In the 1950s they lived several times for short periods in separation, in 1973 they divorced. During the marriage with Jeanne Martin had numerous affairs, including with Pier Angeli, later with the beauty queen Gail Renshaw, the actress Phyllis Davis and Bing Crosby's daughter in law Peggy Crosby. In 1973, Martin married Catherine "Kathy" Hawn, who divorced three years later. Martin has been living with his second wife Jeanne since the 1980s, but without formally closing the marriage again. Jeanne Martin died at the age of 89 in August 2016, two weeks after her son Ricci.

Ricci James (born September 20, 1953, † August 6, 2016); He was a music producer and entertainer, co-producer of his father's last three studio albums, and wrote a biography of him in 2002.

In 1957 Martin was given sole custody of the four children from his first marriage, which until then had had their mother Betty. Martin was "not a man who liked to be with others" (Daniel Mann); he always wanted to be alone (Jerry Lewis). Martin had no close friends. The most intense relationship of trust was with Mack "Killer" Gray, a former boxing manager and occasional actor who was his assistant and factotum for nearly 30 years from 1952. In addition, the copywriter Sammy Cahn, the actor Stewart Granger and Frank Sinatra were to be expected to Martins closer environment, the latter relationship was kept mainly by Sinatra alive.

Martin found sympathy especially for broken characters; His daughter Deana speaks in this respect of "Underdogs." Biografie
Kindheit und frühe Jahre
Martins Vater war der im italienischen Montesilvano geborene Landarbeiter Gaetano Crocetti (1894–1967), der 1913, wie schon einige Jahre zuvor sein Bruder, in die USA ausgewandert war. Gaetano Crocetti, der sich ab 1914 Guy nannte, ließ sich in der Industriestadt Steubenville im amerikanischen Rust Belt (Rostgürtel) nieder und eröffnete einen Friseursalon. Martins Mutter war die in Ohio geborene italienischstämmige Angela „Angelina“ Barr, geb. Barra (1897–1966). Sie heirateten im Oktober 1914. Eineinhalb Jahre später wurde mit Guglielmo (später William oder Bill genannt; 1916–1968) ihr erstes Kind geboren, ein weiteres Jahr später kam am 7. Juni 1917 Dino als zweiter Sohn verfrüht zur Welt.

Dino sprach nach eigenen Angaben bis zu seinem fünften Lebensjahr nur Italienisch; er selbst bezeichnete das rückblickend als einen „Abruzzendialekt“. Persönliches
Ungeachtet seines jovialen Auftretens in der Öffentlichkeit galt Martin persönlich als extrem verschlossen. Schon als Kind zog er sich oft zurück. Spätere Weggefährten und die Mitglieder seiner Familie berichteten übereinstimmend, dass er „sich selbst genug“ und an Kommunikation nicht interessiert gewesen sei; seine persönlichen Gedanken habe er auch in privatem Umfeld nicht geäußert. Ein Biograf bezeichnete ihn als Incommunicado. Jerry Lewis sprach von einer Mauer, die Martin um sein Inneres errichtet habe. Die Einladung eines Filmproduzenten, sich bei einem gemeinsamen Essen näher kennenzulernen, lehnte Martin ab: „Mich lernt niemand kennen.“ Martins Ehefrau Jeanne beklagte, dass es auch ihr nicht gelungen sei, hinter seine Fassade zu dringen: „Ich kenne ihn nicht.“ Er sei „entweder der komplizierteste Mensch der Welt oder der einfachste.“ Martins Biograf Nick Tosches führt diese Entrücktheit (ital. lontananza) auf uralte italienische Verhaltensmuster zurück, die Martin als Teenager in Steubenville bei seinen Kontakten mit Mitgliedern der organisierten Kriminalität erlebt und übernommen habe.

Martin war „kein Mensch, der gerne mit anderen zusammen war“ (Daniel Mann); er habe immer alleine sein wollen (Jerry Lewis). Enge Freunde hatte Martin nicht. Das intensivste Vertrauensverhältnis bestand zu Mack „Killer“ Gray, einem ehemaligen Boxmanager und Gelegenheitsschauspieler, der ab 1952 fast 30 Jahre lang sein Assistent und Faktotum war. Daneben waren auch der Texter Sammy Cahn, der Schauspieler Stewart Granger sowie Frank Sinatra zu Martins engerem Umfeld zu rechnen, wobei die letztgenannte Beziehung vornehmlich durch Sinatra am Leben gehalten wurde.

Sympathie empfand Martin besonders für gebrochene Charaktere; seine Tochter Deana spricht insoweit von „Underdogs.“ Zu Marilyn Monroe, mit der er 1962 an dem – nicht vollendeten – Film Something’s Got to Give arbeitete, fühlte er sich ungeachtet professioneller Differenzen persönlich hingezogen. Er bezeichnete sie nach ihrem Tod als „wunderbares Mädchen“ und weigerte sich, Kommentare zu ihrem Lebensstil abzugeben oder sich an Spekulationen über die Ursachen ihres Todes zu beteiligen. Den psychisch labilen und medikamentenabhängigen Schauspieler Montgomery Clift, der Martin seinerseits bewunderte, unterstützte er in seinen schwierigen Lebensphasen. Als Clift wegen seiner Homosexualität und seiner labilen Gesundheit Gegenstand kritischer Berichterstattung geworden war, zeigte sich Martin wiederholt in dessen Gesellschaft, um öffentlich seine Solidarität mit ihm zu demonstrieren.

Martin war bereits seit den 1930er-Jahren passionierter Golfspieler. Wann immer er konnte, zog er sich auf einen Golfplatz zurück. Bei den Dreharbeiten zu seinen Filmen ließ er sich am Set vielfach eine provisorische Driving Range aufbauen, auf der er in den Drehpausen Schläge übte. In späteren Jahren entwickelte sich Martin zu einem Automobilliebhaber, der vor allem amerikanische und italienische Sportwagen sammelte. Zu den exklusiven Exponaten seiner Sammlung gehörte ein in nur wenigen Exemplaren hergestellter Dual-Ghia, den er auch als Requisit in dem Spielfilm Küss mich, Dummkopf nutzte.

Krankheit und Tod
Mack Gray hatte Martin in den 1950er Jahren an das Schmerz- und Betäubungsmittel Percodan herangeführt. Spätestens seit den 1970er Jahren war Martin – ebenso wie Jerry Lewis und Gray selbst – von dem Präparat abhängig; hinzu kamen ab dem Ende des Jahrzehnts Alkoholprobleme. 1990 unternahm er einen Entzugsversuch.

Mit Beginn der 1980er Jahre ließ der Gesundheitszustand Martins wahrnehmbar nach. Er hatte zunehmend Schwierigkeiten, sich Texte zu merken. Der Unfalltod seines Sohnes Dean Paul im Jahr 1987 löste bei Martin eine anhaltende Depression aus, die sich unter anderem in einer verstärkten Gleichgültigkeit sich und der Umwelt gegenüber ausdrückte. Jerry Lewis war der Ansicht, der Tod seines Sohnes habe Martin seinen Lebenswillen genommen („That was the day he died“). Die von Sinatra angestoßene Together Again Tour des Jahres 1988 war ein erfolgloser Versuch, Martin aus seiner Lethargie zu lösen. Zwar hatte er in den folgenden Jahren noch einige Auftritte in Las Vegas; sie waren aber kurz und zeigten zuletzt „einen Dean Martin, der sich kaum noch auf den Beinen halten konnte.“ Seine Apathie verstärkte sich noch nach dem Tod von Sammy Davis Jr. im Frühjahr 1990. Zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre wurde bei Martin die Alzheimer-Krankheit diagnostiziert, im September 1993 zudem Lungenkrebs.

Dean Martin starb am 25. Dezember 1995 im Alter von 78 Jahren an den Folgen seiner Krebserkrankung. Am Tag seines Todes wurden die Straßen und Gebäude in Las Vegas für zehn Minuten verdunkelt. Martin wurde am 28. Dezember 1995 auf dem Pierce Bros. Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles beigesetzt.

Remembering Dean Martin as a Western Star

The late, great crooner rode tall alongside the likes of John Wayne and James Stewart.

Dean Martin — whose 100th birthday we celebrate June 7 — may not be anyone’s first choice as an iconic cowboy hero. But the late, great multitalented entertainer proved to be a dependable player in several westerns throughout his long career. Here are seven of his best.

Rio Bravo (1959)
Martin earned his spurs as the hard-drinking deputy of John Wayne’s Sheriff John T. Chance in Howard Hawks’ much-imitated, rarely equaled classic western. It’s a tense, straight-shooting drama, but Hawks allows time for some musical comedy relief as Martin’s character sings a couple of tunes with Sheriff Chance’s other two allies: a crotchety and crippled old coot (Walter Brennan), and a naïve young gunslinger with a decidedly non-cowboyish coiffure (Ricky Nelson).

Sergeants 3 (1962)
A loose remake of George Stevens’ Gunga Din (1939), with the basic plot transported from British India to the American West. Martin, Frank Sinatra and Peter Lawford star as brawling U.S. Cavalry sergeants assigned to an Indian Territory outpost in 1870, and Sammy Davis Jr. appears as a trumpet-playing former slave who dreams of becoming a trooper. The action sequences are every bit as exciting as you’d expect in a movie by the same director — John Sturges — who gave us The Magnificent Seven (1960).

4 for Texas (1963)
Veteran filmmaker Robert Aldrich (The Dirty Dozen) directed this free-wheeling western comedy, set in Galveston, Texas, about two rival couples — Martin and Anita Ekberg, Frank Sinatra and Ursula Andress — who must join forces to save their gambling boat from a corrupt banker (Victor Buono) and a murderous outlaw (Charles Bronson). Believe it or not, The Three Stooges also figure into the action.

The Sons of Katie Elder (1965)
Martin is reunited with Rio Bravo co-star John Wayne in Henry Hathaway’s enduringly popular and surprisingly influential western about brothers who reunite for the funeral of their saintly mother — and uncover new clues in the mystery of their father’s violent death. Wayne (as John Elder) and Martin (Tom Elder) are joined by Michael Anderson Jr. (Bud Elder) and Earl Holliman (Matt Elder) as the avenging siblings. Decades later, filmmaker John Singleton freely admitted to using this movie as a template for his own Four Brothers (2005).

Rough Night in Jericho (1967)
And now for something completely different: Martin is effectively cast against type as the villain of the piece, Alex Flood, a lawman gone bad while taking over the Wild West town of Jericho. George Peppard plays the unlikely hero, a lawman-turned-gambler who risks everything to take on Flood after he falls for the beautiful owner-operator (Jean Simmons) of a stagecoach line.

Five Card Stud (1968)
As much a murder mystery as a traditional western, director Henry Hathaway’s offbeat drama has Martin cast as Van Morgan, an honest cowpoke who tries, and fails, to stop fellow poker players from lynching a card shark they catch cheating. Months later, Morgan returns to the scene of the crime after hearing that members of the lynch party are being murdered, one by one. Among the likely suspects: Nick Evers (Roddy McDowell), one of the lynch-party instigators, and Rev. Jonathan Rudd (Robert Mitchum), a hell-fire-and-brimstone preacher.

Bandolero! (1968)
Martin teams with James Stewart in director Andrew V. Laglen’s action-packed shoot-’em-up. After Mace Bishop (Stewart) saves his brother Dee (Martin) from the gallows, the brothers and their gang high-tail it out of town with a hostage: Maria (Raquel Welch), the beautiful widow of a wealthy rancher Dee shot during a robbery. Truth to tell, Maria never thought much of her husband, so it’s not long before she’s sweet on Dee. Trouble is, they’re pursued by a relentless sheriff (George Kennedy) who’s a-hankering to claim Maria for his own.

Hey pallies, likes all youse Dino-holics likes guessed by the tag of this Dino-gram that today's Dino-devotion was also found when we put the name of our most beloved Dino into the google search engine with that word that so darin'ly describes our Dino: menefreghista.   Likes this Dino-message has been waitin' a long long Dino-time for us to uncover and share with all youse pallies and we are greatly glad to do so this very Dino-day.  In fact pallies, we waited so long that we just discovered the blog no longer exist, so we are perfectly pumped that we make a draft of it before it's exit.

Today we visit with a Spanish blogger tagged Ricard, citizen of Barcelona, Spain, and whose blog has the groovy tag, "With double cheese" (Con doble de queso in Spanish).  Ricard's post, "El menefreghista," is a lucid look at the meanin's of the Italiano word menefreghista, and, no suprise to Dino-philes likes us, the example that Ricard potently points to is, of course, our one and only Dino.
Likes as youse will read below, Ricard sez, "A martini in hand, a cigarette in the other, the room full of girls dancing swing and wearing their newly released miniskirts. The Menefreghista leaning against a table, his eyes lost beyond the smoke, only paying attention to what really interests him. Dean Martin, throughout his life, exploited that image of menefreghista."

Likes this is the first time we have ever come 'cross a post of this Dino-descriptive term, and we thinks it is very very cool to find our King of Cool suavely saluted in this way.  We sez our thanks to Ricard for makin' our Dino known in this way.

A menefreghista is like-occasionally-the Italians call those people who believe they are really unique, unique in their kind. Those who live in their own world and only attend when something interests them or can take advantage. A concept that in our native language would become an egocentric (maybe a selfish) classy.

Menefreghismo: attitude of those who do not care about others or any other issue that does not touch him closely. You can be menefreghistas always, or suddenly put menefreghista in reaction to something in particular. Etymologically it comes from (non) me ne frega (niente), that is, "I do not care at all".

A martini in hand, a cigarette in the other, the room full of girls dancing swing and wearing their newly released miniskirts. The Menefreghist leaning against a table, his eyes lost beyond the smoke, only paying attention to what really interests him. Dean Martin, throughout his life, exploited that image of menefreghista. Being a menefreghista seems fun but I'm afraid I'm too old-not old-to change. Why do we like the ways of being so far away from what we are? Precisely because of that, because with Menefreghist attitudes people win where we fail.

I have not written this post with any encouragement, it just happens that the word menefreghista I love ... also the words "croquette" and "Rosicrucian" but they did not give much ...

Un menefreghista es como -ocasionalmente- denominan los italianos a aquellas personas que se creeen realmente  singulares, únicos en su especie. Aquellos que viven en su propio mundo y solo atienden cuando algo les interesa o bien pueden sacar provecho. Un concepto que en nuestro idioma patrio vendría a ser  un egocentrico (puede que un egoísta) con clase.

Menefreghismo: actitud de quien no le importa nada de los demás ni de ningún otro tema que no le toque de cerca. Se puede ser menefreghistas siempre, o bien ponerse de pronto menefreghista en reacción con alguna cosa en particular. Etimológicamente viene de (non) me ne frega (niente), o sea, "no me importa para nada".

Un martini en la mano, un cigarrillo en la otra, el salón repleto de muchachas bailando swing y luciendo sus recien estrenadas minifaldas. El menefreghista apoyado en una mesa, con los ojos perdidos mas allá del humo, solo prestando atención a aquello que le interesa realmente. Dean Martin, a lo largo de toda su vida, explotó esa imagen de menefreghista. Ser un menefreghista parece divertido pero me temo que soy demasiado mayor -que no viejo- para cambiar. ¿Por que nos gustan las maneras de ser tan alejadas a  lo que somos? Precisamente por eso, porque con actitudes menefreghista las personas vencen donde nosotros fracasamos.

No he escrito este post con ningún ánimo, simplemente sucede que la palabra menefreghista me encanta... también las palabras "croqueta" y "rosacruz" pero no daban para mucho...

Dumpster Dino

Hey pallies, likes over 'n over 'n over all us Dino-philes keeps inqurin', "Where will our Dino turn up next?  Well last Saturday we put the name of our most beloved Dino 'long with  the word source into the google search engine and we landed at the youtube pad of a lovely lady from the Windy City who tags herself, "Mom The Ebayer" (pictured on the left.)

Well this mom (Miss Williams) is a dumpster diver extraordinaire and her most recent released youtube vid, "Dumpster Diving: A Mega Move Out - SCORE!! SCORE!!! SCORE!!!!"  includes delightful Dino-treasure swankly scored from, yes pallies, a dumpster!

If youse goes to the vid 'bout 19:20 you'll find Miss Williams pullin' a number of large framed posters outta the garbage and the first is that fabulous famous perfect pose of The Rat Pack, our most beloved Dino with Mr. Frank Sinatra, and Mr. Sammy Davis, Jr,  snapped at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1961. 

 Likes it's supremely shockin' that anyone woulda part with such deep deep Dino-treasure, but to put it out with the trash is simply ubberly unthinkable to our Dino-way of thinkin'.  And, the even bigger shocker Dino-holics is that when Miss Williams pulls it out and describes it, she sez, "Of course we have the Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and I don't know who that is." 
Likes can youse believe it pallies this Dumpster Divin' Diva ain't got a clue who our King of Cool is.

We are grateful that a trio of commenters set Miss Williams Dino-straight as youse will read below the vid.   We are 'specially powerfully pleased with the commenter "wellersmate" who sez, "Totally shocked that you don’t recognize the great Dino... DEAN MARTIN 😵"

All us Dino-devotees can learn at least a couple of lessons from this postin'  (1)  It may very well be worth all our whiles to goes dumpster divin' for Dino-treasure ourselves, and even more truly, (2) Never ever take for granted that everyone can name the name of our Dino.  As long as there are folks likes Miss Williams 'round we all need to keep up our energetic efforts to proclaim the name of our Dino and do our very Dino-best to keep the Dino-light glowin' ever ever Dino-brighter 'n brighter!

Our Dino....at Ohio Tourism Day at Statehouse

Hey pallies, likes faithful readers of ilovedinomartin will remember that our Dino's hometown of Steubenville, Ohio haS a delightful display of life size nutcrackers durin' the holiday season...and likes, of course, Stu-ville's fav son has a nutcracker dedicated to his Dino-likeness.  Well as youse will read in the Dino-post below, the Dino-cracker was one of just three to be chosen to be on display at this year's "Ohio Tourism day at Statehouse."

Likes from the online presence of Stu-ville's home rag, "The Herald-Star" in a post scribed by staff writer Miss Linda Harrris comes this extremely excitin' Dino-news.  Our Dino was coolly chosen 'long with father Christmas and the astronaut to regale pallies attendin' the Columbus tourism gig.
In the accompanyin' image the Dino-cracker is the one on the right that youse can partially view.
We gotta 'fess up that we search the web high and low to share an image of the Dino-cracker in all it's glory, but we had to settle by sharin' the Dino-ornament representation at the top of this Dino-gram.

We keeps quirin', "Where will our most beloved Dino show up next, well this Dino-week our King of Cool made the trip from Stu-ville to Columbus to holds forth at the yearly Ohio Tourism Day.

Steubenville nutcrackers come out of storage for Ohio Tourism Day at Statehouse

STEUBENVILLE — Ohio Tourism Day’s organizers rolled out the welcome mat Wednesday for three of the city’s beloved nutcrackers as well as 89 other tourist attractions from around the state.


“It’s a huge honor for those of us involved in the Nutcracker Village project,” said Mark Nelson, owner of Nelson Fine Arts and Gifts. “It’s an honor for all of us in Steubenville as well.”

Nelson said his daughter Therese, the artistic force behind the Nutcracker Village project, accompanied three nutcrackers — the astronaut, Father Christmas and Dean Martin — to Columbus, where they set up at the Statehouse.

“A ton of people came by,” Nelson said. “State Rep. Jack. Cera, D-Bellaire, came by, the governor stopped and saw them, the mayor of Columbus stopped and talked with her. A lot of people were attracted to them in Columbus.”

The idea, Therese Nelson said, was to “showcase what we have to offer to other tourism professionals, city leaders and actual tourists.

“We talked a lot about what we’re doing here for revitalization, which is something everyone is interested in hearing,” she said.

Ohio Tourism Day is a yearly event, Mark Nelson said.

“It was a huge honor for all of us involved,” he said.

 Good food in a temple to Dean Martin

It has been a long time since we’ve been to That’s Amore and after this last visit I don’t know why we have waited so long to revisit them. In the probably 15 years since our last visit the interior hasn’t changed all that much — Dean Martin is still the star on the walls — but my impression of the food has taken a huge leap forward.

With an ample menu and daily specials there is a lot to choose from. Prices are appropriate for a popular Milwaukee Suburban restaurant. This isn’t NYC and it isn’t some little hick town — the prices are right where they should be; the service was excellent; and the food was outstanding.

From salad to entree the dishes were well presented & tasty. The salad was chilled — no warm lettuce drenched in cold dressing. Our entrees (one special and one main menu choice) arrive hot, well seasoned (neither overly seasoned nor bland), and enough for a grown man’s appetite. The wine list is adequate and our brandy old fashioned were just right.

I’m sure we’ll be back sooner rather than later.

Television was never better than when a “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” came on my parent’s RCA console TV.

 

Hey pallies, likes today's Dino-devotion is from the great state of Texas and a town tagged Tyler where columnist Mr. John Moore (pictured on the left) scribes for the local newspaper, "The Morning Telegraph"  In a March 30, 2019 installment of his feature "Moore Thoughts: A ‘Hic' Town," Mr. Moore lovin'ly lauds our great great man in his opennin' topical sentence, "Television was never better than when a “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” came on my parent’s RCA console TV."

John goes on to, in delightful detail, to reverently regale his remarkable readership on our most beloved Dino's decade long series of makin' funny with tons of his pallies as they roasted one celebrity after 'nother.  As youse will read below, Moore awesomely accents one of our Dino's fav guests Mr. Foster Brooks and shares that youtube vid that has gone virtually viral of our Dino and Mr. Brooks in The Bar/Airplane Pilot swank sketch from the Dino-show as well as a cool compilation of Foster's appearances on the roasts.

Moore Thoughts: A ‘Hic' Town

Television was never better than when a “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” came on my parent’s RCA console TV.

If you’ve ever been to Hollywood, it is remarkable how small it is. The “Hollywood” sign sits on a nearby mountain and can be seen from almost anywhere. Take a short excursion and you can be in Bel Air, Beverly Hills or many other well-known ZIP codes — all of which you and I can barely afford to drive through.

From 1974 to 1984, "The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast" (an extension of Martin’s highly rated “The Dean Martin Show,” which aired from 1965 to 1974) was filmed in the LA area and later at the MGM Grande in Las Vegas.


After his weekly variety show ended, Dean was still very popular, so he used his star power as a way to continue performing. It was also a way for his friends, many of whom weren’t as popular as they had once been, to still get some exposure and make a few bucks in the process.

But "The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast" wasn’t just a vehicle for him and his buddies to make money, it was legitimately hilarious. No doubt, the program was very scripted, but you’d never know it. The dozens of stars who frequented the roasts delivered the lines as if they were their own.

And no one else delivered their lines better than Foster Brooks. Brooks played a “lovable lush.” Today, laughing at alcoholism is considered politically incorrect, but the fact is, Brooks made himself the joke. And he did it to perfection.

Through slurred words and malapropisms, Foster Brooks roasted the week’s roastee. He was beyond funny. I challenge anyone to pull up one of his "Celebrity Roast" segments on YouTube and not laugh until your sides hurt.

What most people didn’t and probably still don’t know about Foster Brooks is that he didn’t drink alcohol. But his ability to play someone who was significantly inebriated did come from having been a drinker when he was younger.

He said he gave up drinking and smoking in 1964 on a bet, during a time when he wasn’t making much money.

Foster Brooks’ life was interesting. There are some great facts on his IMDB.com database and in his New York Times obituary.

He had tried to make it in show business for many years, but it wasn’t until he was 59 that he finally got his big break — from of all people, singer Perry Como.

Brooks and Como shared a mutual friend (the game show host, Dennis James) who asked Brooks to tell a few jokes during a charity golf tournament. That led to an invitation to open for Como, which then led to other jobs, including the one that gave him national exposure — "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."

Brooks was also an excellent skit comic. He and Dean Martin together were magical. One of their best bits was a scene in a bar with Deano where Brooks is obviously sloshed and strikes up a conversation with Martin.



He keeps telling Martin that he’s had a rough day and needs a few drinks to calm his nerves before going to work. Right before leaving, Martin finally gets Brooks to reveal that the drinks he needs before he goes to work are because he’s an airline pilot.

Brooks’ act was so convincing that many people could not be convinced it was an act. But according to a quote from him, Foster Brooks quit drinking on $10 bet. He said that he took the bet and quit drinking because he needed the $10.

But Foster Brooks, who became famous late in life for being a convincing drunk, was probably the most unlikely member of an otherwise exclusive and insulated club.


The guests of honor on "Celebrity Roast" may have agreed to be the center of attention. But Johnny Carson, Jack Benny, Betty White, Michael Landon, Kirk Douglas, Joe Namath, Don Rickles and the dozens of other celebrities who accepted the hot seat had to know that if Brooks was on the guest list the night they were featured, they’d be losing the spotlight.



The "Celebrity Roasts" do live on and are available on DVD box sets now, even if most of the stars are gone, including the lovable lush.

Foster Brooks died at age 89 in 2001 in Encino, California. He left behind a treasure trove of hilarious bits with some of the biggest stars in the history of show business.

By all accounts, he was a humble and nice man. And I absolutely believe that.

A pretty amazing legacy — from a drunk who didn’t drink.

Likes 'mong the six "stylish men – both straight and gay – from the past century whose incredible images are shared is, of course, our Dino.  We have keenly known our Dino to be the swankest of swanky style icons, and it is completely cool to see our King of Cool awesomely acknowledged in this post and even more so from the pallies at the Wall Street Journal.  The potent pose of our Dino, between images of Buddy Holly and Miles Davis shows our Dino's classic cool and we are thrilled to see such a marvelous mag fantastically featured in the pages of the Journal.

Today’s #ThrowbackThursday Post comes via the Wall Street Journal’s Magazine: Spring Men’s Wear Fashion edition. It will adequately demonstrate why Throwback Thursdays are more than a bow to nostalgia.

First, we  take a look at what the world considered to be stylish men – both straight and gay – from the past century:  Buddy Holly, Dean Martin and Miles Davis:

When you look at the famous stars of the classic Hollywood era, do you think they’ve always looked like that? Do you think their beauty is always natural? We often assume that old Hollywood stars are just naturally beautiful, and never had anything done, just because it was a long time ago, and because they look different to what modern celebrities look like now.

Plastic surgery has actually been a staple for Hollywood stars since 1920s. A lot of the stars we consider to be the beauty icons of classic Hollywood have actually had plastic surgery and today we’re going to take a look at some of them and what they’ve had done.

As it turns out, the King of Cool apparently wasn’t that cool with some of his features. In fact, Dean Martin, the famous actor, singer, comedian went under the knife when his career started taking off. He got rhinoplasty in order to make his nose look narrower. As you can see the plastic surgery was a great success. The shape of his nose stayed pretty much the same, but it wasn’t as wide anymore.

Hey pallies, likes as we continued our 'net search for more fantastic fun with veritable ventriloquist Mr. Terry Fator and his Dino-puppet, we sweetly struck Dino-gold when we clicks on the Facebook page of the pallies at television station FOX5 Las Vegas and found a video of an interview the station did with Fator that includes the Dino-puppet in action!

Hey pallies, likes we were so beautifully blown 'way yester-Dino-day when we shared 'bout ventriloquist virtuoso Mr. Terry Fator creatin' a Dino-puppet to use in his swank shows that we simply had to search the ol' 'net to see what more info we could find on this first rate entertainer and pehaps a potent pix of Fator which his Dino-creation.

Well Dino-philes, our eager efforts were remarkably rewarded when we found perfect prose on Terry at the 'Vegas baby 'Vegas news outlet, "LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL," where superb  scriber Mr. John Katsilometes put pen to paper in his awesome article, "Terry Fator, a Las Vegas Strip star, summons Sammy & Dean."

Terry Fator, a Las Vegas Strip star, summons Sammy & Dean

We sometimes forget that Terry Fator was once a fixture on the county-fair circuit.

But Fator doesn’t.

“For years I was an ancillary part of the county-fair experience,” says Fator, celebrating his 10th anniversary at his eponymous theater at the Mirage on Friday night. “They were not there to see me perform. They were there for the fair. So, I’d put together and do a 30-minute show, and they would leave after I brought out my first puppet, and go off to see the pig-calling contest or the petting zoo.”

That changed when Fator captured the “America’s Got Talent” Season 2 championship in 2007. He moved to Las Vegas, into a proper theater, in a real resident production.

“That first night at the Mirage, I walked out thinking, ‘These people are here to watch me,’ ” Fator says, recalling his opening-night gala a decade ago. “They are not here to be at the fair.”

A decade on, Fator continues to advance his act. His upgraded show is called, “An Evening With the Stars,” with such new celeb figures as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Stevie Wonder and Willie Nelson. Justin Bieber, too, is billed as a “new” puppet, though little Justin debuted over the holidays. Two other newbies from the Christmas production, Dolly Parton and Ozzy Osbourne (the angel and devil on Bieber’s shoulders) are also back.

Elton John, David Bowie and Paul McCartney are also in Fator’s superstar lineup. Such mainstays as Winston the Impersonating Turtle, stoner Duggie Scott Walker, country warbler Walter T. Airdale, Elvis impersonator Maynard Tompkins and, yes, Donald Trump remain in the routine.

Fator has been working with his new puppets for several weeks, incorporating them into his regular rotation. The Wonder and Nelson figures were actually produced for Fator by an artist in the Netherlands, who offered them to Fator only after creating the puppets and offering them to the star ventriloquist.

“He showed me a picture of these two puppets, and they were so beautiful, I had to have them,” Fator said. “The artist actually packed them and flew with them to Las Vegas to hand-deliver them to me.”

The expanded show marked a first in Fator’s career: A puppet fully produced for the stage that didn’t make the final cut. That distinction falls to Frank Sinatra, who was originally created for a full Rat Pack segment.


“Unfortunately, the Frank Sinatra puppet didn’t quite work. He’s good, but didn’t measure up to Dean and Sammy,” Fator says. “We’re putting him off until later. He’s just not up to snuff with the rest of them, and he needs to be, because I have the coolest-looking puppets anywhere.”

Fator says he hopes to play the Mirage for the rest of his career.

“I’m almost 54 years old, finally feeling at peace with myself,” says Fator, who says he’s never been happier in his three-year marriage to his wife, Angie Fator. “I have no headaches, I have no acid reflux (laughs). Life is good, and that comes across onstage. I think the audiences are feeling how much fun I am having onstage and how wonderful it is for me.”

Likes pallies, there truly truly is no end to the wonderful ways that our Dino is bein' coolly celebrated and Dino-devotion continues to be spread.  We are supremely sure that when Mr. Terry Fator makes fun with his Dino-puppet that it will not only bring instant fun to his audiences, but that many many pallies in those seats will be drawn into happiness that only our Dino can bring and seek to grow deeply deeply in Dino.

Ventriloquist Terry Fator to perform at Northern Quest on Friday

Every year on the anniversary of his first headline show in Las Vegas, ventriloquist Terry Fator adds a new character to his show.

But to celebrate his 10th anniversary, Fator went big, adding five new characters to a brand new show.

Willie Nelson, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Stevie Wonder and Justin Bieber will now join Fator onstage, in puppet form, of course.

There’s no word on if those puppets will join Fator during his show at Northern Quest Resort and Casino on Friday, but there’s no doubt he’ll have a few fan favorites with him perhaps including Winston the Impersonating Turtle, Maynard Thompkins, the self-proclaimed world’s best Elvis Presley impersonator, Walter T. Airdale, a country-singing presidential candidate, Emma Taylor, a 12-year-old girl who loves to take selfies, and Monte Carlo, a Las Vegas hopeful.

Fator has been headlining his own show at the Mirage since winning “America’s Got Talent” in 2007.

Over the years, Fator has won numerous Las Vegas awards, including best show and best all around performer.

Terry’s new Dean Martin sounds great and looks fantastic, proving that alcohol is a preservative. Just like the days at the Sands, Dean teams up with Frank and Sammy to deliver classics from the Great American Songbook.
