Engelbert Humperdinck : 'I'm not a Mr Goody Two-Shoes by any means'

ANDREW OWEN

There's a video of Engelbert Humperdinck on YouTube - well, there are dozens and dozens, actually, but this one's particularly good.

It's nearly half-a-century old, culled from an episode of the Dean Martin Show, and shows the great man in his full technicolour pomp - big black hair, even bigger, blacker sideburns and that quite ridiculously big voice.

The song he's singing may not be the best ever written - indeed, a slight whiff of cheese wafts through the computer speakers the moment you press play - but you can see why Humperdinck became a star. He's loving every minute in the limelight. Even the famously laid-back host seems impressed.

"Dino was great," recalls the former Arnold Dorsey, down the line from Los Angeles. "When I first started in showbusiness they took me to prestigious places where they wanted me to play, and they took me to Vegas and they showed me the hotels where they wanted me to play, and the one that I particularly liked was one that was owned by Dean Martin.

"Dino took me under his wing and he put his name on the marquee: 'Dean Martin presents Englebert Humperdinck'.

"I had a home in Vegas. He used to stay at that house, he used to live in my house when I wasn't there. He used to rent my home from me."

Dean Martin long ago departed for the great cabaret venue in the sky, but Humperdinck  - dubbed the King of Romance - is still going strong.

He's just marked his 80th birthday but still sounds in fine fettle - as Kiwi audiences will be able to judge when he arrives later this month for a short tour.
