Dean Martin Says: I'M NO SOUSE, I'M A CROOK!

Hey pallies, likes as the "NATIONAL ENQUIRER" sez, "Inquiring Minds Need To Know." Well, likes after sharin' yester-Dino-day's post from the self-tagged "THE WORLD'S LIVELIEST NEWSPAPER," likes we indeed needed to Dino-know if we coulda locate and share anymore Dino-related postin's from this rag mag.

Well, we put the name of our most beloved Dino 'long with the words "National Enquirer" into the ol' goggle blog search engine, and Dino-low and Dino-behold we found yet 'nother Dino-cover---actually a whole issue of this tabloid bein' sold over at Ebay.  This illustrious issue is from March 29, 1964 and likes once 'gain features our Dino on the cover with 'nother powerfully provocative Dino-'fession, "Dean Martin Says: I'M NO SOUSE, I'M A CROOK!  I Steal & Cheat But It's All For Charity.

Likes as of our scribin' this to youse, this Dino-treasure will still for sale at Ebay for a mere $14.99 plus shippin'.   To checks it out, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-report to goes directly to the Ebay page.  We can't wait to see if we come find more cool Dino-treasure of the "NATIONAL ENQUIRER" sort.

I'm Not a Bottle Baby, Says Dean Martin.....

Hey pallies, likes we love roamin' all over the 'net lookin' for lush 'n lascivious postin's on our most beloved Dino, and indeed there is always mucho more delightful Dino-treasures to be uncovered.  Recently as we were viewin' a ton of Dino-images we came 'cross the one featured below that we the front page of the June 28-July 4, 1959 edition of the inquirin' minds wanna know rag, "THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER," who tags itself as "THE WORLD'S LIVELIEST PAPER."

Likes over the years, we've seen our Dino featured in the pages of this naughty newspaper time after time....and for good reason, for in Dino's day his fantastic fans coolly craved news of The King Of Cool.  But, we gotta 'fess up that we don't ever remember our Dino havin' the entire front page dedicated to his cool, hip, and randy persona.  It's a swank shot of our Dino and how coulda Dino-holics likes we not greatly groove on the cooler then cool captivatin' caption, "I'm Not a Bottle Baby, Says Dean Martin - BUT I GOT A RIGHT TO BE TIGHT!

Hey pallies, likes as we wind down our mighty multi-day swank series of posts awesomely accentin' our swinger Dino and his newest amore circa Fall 1969, Miss Gail Renshaw, we have supremely scoured the ol' 'web for a few more incredibly  intoxicatin' images of our Dino makin' the scene with Miss Gail.  (We gives keen kudos to our pallie Danny-o for usin' the adjective "intoxicatin" in recent patter....a deeply descriptive, wonderfully wise word that supremely suits our most beloved Dino that we plan to now use often here at our humble little Dino-conclave.)

Hey pallies, likes today we continue puttin' the accent on our swinger Dino swingin' his golf clubs while makin' the swingin' scene with his newest amore, Miss Gail Renshaw  at the 29th Annual Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur Golf Championship on January 22, 1970 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.  Likes below are 9---count 'em---9 coolest of cool candids snapped of our Dino with Miss Renshaw by his side.

Likes these black and white images have been shared here at ilovedinomartin quite a long time 'go and in much small versions.  We are deeply deeply delighted to bring 'em back in a lovely large format for all youse Dino-holics Dino-viewin' pleasure.  'gain likes youse can see how swankly smitten our most beloved Dino is with Miss Gail and likes how so very very much Renshaw is likin' bein' with our King of Cool.

Incredibly Intriguin' Images Of Our Dino and Miss Gail Renshaw

Hey pallies, likes today we continue our accentin' of the awesomely amorous relationship that our Dino developed with Miss Gail Renshaw 'pon meetin' the evenin' of October 13, 1969 in our Dino's playground, 'Vegas baby 'Vegas.  Likes this Dino-day we are pleasantly pleased to share a goodly number of cooler then cool candid images of our main man and his new amore snapped  at the 29th Annual Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur Golf Championship on January 22, 1970 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.

We deeply digs that Miss Renshaw made the scene at Pebble Beach, lovin'ly watchin' our Dino play that game that he was perfectly passionate 'pon.  Likes what coulda be better then havin' the new found love of your life (Renshaw) watch you compete in playin' your long time love (golf).  Above is an image that always brings such Dino-happiness to our hearts as catch a groovy glimpse of our Dino and Miss Gail havin' such a special special time with each other.

A golf tournament is almost always a very public affair, so we are completely certain that those in attendance watched attentively as our Dino and Miss Gail made their deep delight in bein' together crystal clear.  We woulda bet that simply tons and tons of pixs were shot of our Dino and Miss Renshaw's time at Pebble Beach and we are most pleased to share a number of 'em with all youse Dino-holics but simply clickin' HERE to go the "gettyimage" web pad and see the awesomely assembled swingin' shots of our Dino and Miss Gail.  These particular poses all come from photographer Ron Galella's fantastic files.

Dean Martin Plans To Marry Another

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (UPI)Singer Dean Martin portrays a swinger in his television and nightclub acts—and it appears his private life is beginning to live up to that image. It was learned Friday that Martin intends to marry a 22 | year - old, blonde, blue - eye'd beauty queen, Gail Renshaw', who recently was named Miss World-USA. The Arlington, Va., girl, 3C years Martin’s junior, will be his second beauty queen wife. Martin's present wife, Jeanne Biegger Martin, was queen of the Orange Bowl Parade in Miami in 1949. Martin, a celebrity guest in the parade, walked alongside her float and asked her for a date. A whirlwind romance followed and the couple w ; as married that September. A tearful Mrs. Martin an- ; nounced the end of that marriage last Wednesday when she told newsmen that she was seeking a divorce because Martin told her he was in love with another woman. “I will comply w'ith his wdshes,” she said, “proceedings will begin immediately. “My deepest concern at the present is for our children.” The couple has three children: Doan Jr., 18; Ricci, 16; and Gina, 12. In addition, they raised four other children by Martin’s first marriage. Martin, who is hosting the 14th anniversary celebration of the Riviera Hotel here, spent the day Friday revamping his act, which contained such references to his wife as “keep those cards and letters coming to Jeanne and me.” Friday night Martin’s daughter by a previous marriage, Gail, opened the private “Dean Martin Night” show in the Riviera Lounge, Only she and Martin appeared before a crowd of some 800 to 900 “high rollers from cast of the Mississippi” who were admitted by invitation only. Martin has been in this gambling capital for the past several days, hosting the hotel’s five-day anniversary party, which began Wednesday. Film editors at NBC in Burbank, Calif., w'here Martin’s shows are taped, were editing out references to Mrs. Martin on 29 of Martin's shows which 1 already have been taped.

Therefore...in the spirit of ALL the cool cool paisanos , like Mr. & Mrs. Gaetano Crocceti...who brought their GREAT GREAT son, Dino, & Italian traditions to America...I decided to celebrate today with a little, "In Napoli"!

Hey pallies, likes yesterday was the first time that we here at ilovedinomartin officially remembered the incredibly important date in Dino-history, October 13, 1969....the day that our most beloved Dino was introduced to then Miss World-USA, Miss Gail Renshaw while entertainin' in his playground, 'Vegas baby 'Vegas, an evenin' that terrifically transformed our Dino's life and times.

Likes while preparin' that particular Dino-devotion, we recalled that some time 'go, July 9, 2014, we were powerfully pumped to share an update on Miss Renshaw that we have chosen to reprint below.

Hey pallies, likes stop the presses dudes!  Likes we gots us some extra-Dino-special-devotion to shares with all youse Dino-philes this very Dino-day!  We gotta 'fess up that for a long long time now we have been hopin' to find out more details 'bout our most beloved Dino's amores particularly with youthful Miss Gail Renshaw and Miss Andre Boyer.

Likes yesterday we were thrilled to find a google Dino-'lert featurin' an article from the on-line presence of the Falls-Church News Press (Virginia)  'bout what happened to Miss Renshaw includin' some insightful details 'bout her relationship with our Dino. "Whatever became of Arlington’s most famous beauty queen?" is scribed by Mr. Charlie Clark for his column "Our Man in Arlington."

Mr. Clark's interview of Miss Renshaw answers a number of previously unanswered questions about her time with our Dino and we have included that portion of his column that focuses on their relationship.  As usual, to read the whole column, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram.

At the time Miss Renshaw was en route to London to compete to be Miss World (she won first runner-up). But there would soon be the small matter of her engagement to world-famous crooner Dean Martin, a married man 30 years her senior. It seemed a tale worth running down for an update.........

After an early marriage and divorce, she was 22 when she hit the national pageants and traveled to Las Vegas. (A promoter named Sidney Sussman told the Star he “discovered” her on a Potomac River cruise, but Renshaw told me he was just a nice friend trying to capitalize on her fame.)

Martin, then 53, was easing off the peak of his rat-pack popularity but still hosting his own TV show and selling millions of middle-brow records. He was also separating from Jeanne Biegger, the second of what would be three wives.

“I really wanted to meet his daughter Gail, herself a good singer,” Renshaw told me. Having seen Martin’s live show and chatted at a photo session, she went for a drink at Dino’s Den bar in Vegas’s Riviera Hotel. It wasn’t long before Martin asked her on a date. “Well, I have a chaperone,” Renshaw told him, but Martin’s daughter said she could fix that. Soon her chaperone was Dean Martin, and the next night his daughter was conveniently unavailable.

The two fell fast, and Martin’s daughter encouraged Renshaw – “You’d make my dad very happy.” The singer “was always considerate about his wife and family, who gave me a wonderful reception,” recalls Renshaw. “Men loved him, and women loved him.”

But after a few days of anguished phone calls, Renshaw told Martin face to face that she couldn’t go through with the marriage. “The age difference was a hindrance, and I felt bad missing my parents,” Renshaw said, noting that her father back in Arlington wouldn’t fly on airplanes.

On This Date In Dino-history: October 13, 1969

Hey pallies, likes it's 'nother deep deep day in all of Dino-history.  The date is October 13 in the year of our Dino 1969, the place, our Dino's playground...'Vegas baby 'Vegas!  The time is after our Dino's swingin' show.  Likes that's the settin' pallies for one of the most  tremendously transformin' times in the life and times of our most most beloved Dino.

What happened pallies?  Likes we are turnin' to wonderfully wise words from our Dino's beautiful biographer Mr. Nick Tosches, scriber of "DINO: Living High In The Dirty Business Of Dreams," to tell this Dino-tale as only he can....



Gail Renshaw was a blond, blue-eyed, twenty-two-year-old divorcée from Falls Church, Virginia.  She had been Miss Speedway, Miss Good Grooming, and Miss Snow Queen.   In September 1969, in Baltimore, she became Miss World-USA.   Bob Hope, who crowned her, gave her a small part a few weeks later on his television special "Roberta."   Her crown bore the jewels of duty as well as glamour:  As Miss World-USA, she also took on the responsibilities of "ambassadress of goodwill" for Frostie Root Beer, one of the pageant's sponsors.   Her manager, pageant director Al Patricelli of Bridgeport, Connecticut brought the ambassadress to Las Vegas in October to work a greeting-card convention before leaving for London to compete as the American representative in the Miss World Contest.   Dean was at the Riviera.   Dropping Bob Hope's name, Patricelli called the Riviera's press agent, Tony Zoppi, in the hope of having his client photographed with Dean.   "Bring her backstage after the show," Dean told Zoppi on October 13.  That night, wearing a dime-store crown and a MR. WONDERFUL-U.S.A. banner, he sat for a few pictures with her.  "The least you can do now is have dinner with me," he said to her after the photographer left.

When they went to dinner that first night, Dean brought along his daughter Gain, who was two years older than the ambassadress.  After that, they met alone.   The ambassadress telephoned Ma and Pa Renshaw at their home in Alexandria, Virginia.   "You won't believe this," she told her mother, Edna, "but I'm in love."

We stand in absolute awe of Mr. Nick Tosches' retellin' of the story of our Dino.  No one, and we  mean no one has ever come close to his incredible insights and fantastic flair for words that offer keen knowin' of our most  most beloved Dino.  It is true that no one ever did or ever will truly "know" our King of Cool....but Mr. Tosches comes closer then anyone ever has in doin' so.

Hey pallies, likes we're completely certain that youse all have heard the sayin' "better late then never."  Likes today's Dino-gram that we are perfectly privileged  to share with all youse Dino-holics fits into that category.   On occasion we put the tag of our humble little Dino-pad, ilovedinomartin, into the ol' google search engine likes just to see if any pallies are have possibly been pickin' up the Dino-devotion here.

Most recently when we did that, we discovered that Miss Andrea Shea King, pictured 'bove quoted from the annuals of ilovedinomartin in her cool column, SURFIN' SAFARI" for "WORLD NET DAILY" (WND) on Feburary 2, 2015.  Likes we ain't got a clue why it took us so so long to find this, put we are pleasantly pleased to have done so.  Miss King quoted from our Friday, January 9, 2015 blog post, "The commercial song is “Ain’t that a kick in the head” Remix by Dean Martin," that you can locate HERE.

As youse will see below, that particular post accented Nissan's small screen commercial advertizin' the Murano automobile usin' a remix of our Dino's classic croon, "Ain't That A Kick In The Head."
While we are favorably flattered that Miss King woulda shares our Dino-gram givin' our little Dino-conclave a noteworthy nod, we are always awesomely appreciative that the name of our most beloved Dino gets lifted up, helpin' to spread Dino-adulation ever farther and wider!

Manchester United fans are loving an old interview Kenny Dalglish gave during his Celtic days

Awkward.

There could be no more fitting a tribute to Kenny Dalglish than for the stand named in his honour at Anfield to be officially unveiled on the day Manchester United come to visit.

In many ways, the immense rivalry between the northern superpowers helps define them as the two most celebrated and glamorous clubs in English football history.

So it's apt that Liverpool host United next weekend - on the day they unveil their newly monikered Kenny Dalglish Stand (formerly the Centenary Stand).

A host of celebratory activities are planned, but United fans have got their digs in early after unearthing a old interview that shows where Dalglish's allegiances used to lie.

A Shoot interview from the days when the former Liverpool player/manager was still at Celtic is unspectacular enough. We learn that young Kenny loves listening to Dean Martin and enjoys home-made soup.

When asked to name his favourite player, the talented Glaswegian names Old Trafford legend Denis Law. That's understandable enough, seeing as the Lawman was a hero to Scots of all colours.

But when asked to name his favourite club - other than his current employees at Celtic Park - rather than state the Merseyside club where he'd become an all-time legend, Dalglish proudly answers none other than Manchester United.

Hey pallies, likes the other day as  we were checkin' out the Dino-'lerts sent to our email inbox by our pallies at google 'lerts, we were sent off to the official Walmart site in search of Dino-treasure.  Likes woulda it be 'bout a new Dino-al-b-um or Dino-dvd?  Could it be 'bout a new Dino-tome that Wally World was promotin'?  Likes when we arrived at the site, we were supremely surprised to find out that the folks at Walmart are swankly sellin'  photo images of our Dino on the ol' 'net.  Can youse image that...and why not might we ask?!

Likes as you will see by the tag of this Dino-gram , the tag on the Dino-candid is " Dean Martin with a woman."  The "woman" in question is, of course, the young lovelie  that our  Dino was so so  smitten with that he asked  wife numero duo, Miss Jeanne, for a divorce.  That lady was Miss Gail Renshaw.  In doin' a wee bit of Dino-research we're thinkin' that this powerfully potent pose of our most beloved Dino and his most beloved Miss Gail was swingin'ly  snapped at the 29th Annual Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur Golf Championship on January 22, 1970 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.

We gotta 'fess up that we are truly truly taken by this incredible image of Dino and Miss Gail....and likes we said 'bove, supremely surprised to find it bein' merchandised by Wally World and showin' up on the world wide web at this particular time of year, for we will be coolly coolly celebratin' an awesomely auspicious date in all of Dino-history that connects our Dino to Miss Renshaw later in this very Dino-week.

Hey pallies, likes we are always always appreciative for the potent patter that we gets in the comment section of our daily blog postin's, and ever more awesomely appreciative when a fellow Dino-holic puts us on to Dino-devotion that woulda be completely cool to share here at our humble little Dino-conclave, ilovedinomartin.

Yesterday we gots this lovin' lead from our pallie of pallies, DeansPalley 'bout deeply delightful Dino-art by Mr. Rik Ward at the beautiful blog "fineartamerica."  DeansPalley scribed, "Not the same movie...not even a poster.....but wow!!    https://fineartamerica.com/featured/dino--oceans-11-rik-ward.html.  Likes we immediately took a goodly gander at the eminently excitin',  completely creative, incredible image of our Dino that we found there and knew that we woulda puts it up this very Dino-day for all youse Dino-philes to greatly glory in it!

Hey pallies, likes on the heady  heels of yester-Dino-day's devotion accentin  our Dino's before-it's-time , sex farce from '64, "Kiss Me Stupid," likes we feature it once 'gain today as we share  somethin' new in the way of Dino-devotion here at ilovedinomartin.  Today we takes all youse Dino-holics to a blog that features a full length movie on youtube with a couple of pallies who have created a podcast doin' play by play commentary as they watch the flick.  The movie bein' featured is, youse guessed it, "Kiss Me Stupid."  The blog is tagged "Let's Watch A Full-Length Movie on YouTube." The two on-air  reviewers are Mr. Mike Spiegelman and Carl, with the blog post scribed by Mr. Spiegelman.

Likes we are listenin' to the podcast as we write this Dino-gram to all youse Dino-philes, and these pallies roam all over the territory as they view this flick.  We will tell youse this, their patter is not for the faint of heart includin' plenty of "adult" verbiage.  It's a cool concept, but likes it you are hopin' for the sort of commentary offered by actors and directors, you won't find it here.  You can decide for yourselves.  We share it with youse 'cause it is divergent way of liftin' up our Dino.

8/13/17 Episode 62: Kiss Me, Stupid (1964)

I have a "Skidoo!" rule for bad movies. The rule decrees that if you know a famous director for just the director's flops, you owe it yourself to watch the rest of the director's films. Like I've seen Skidoo (1968) enough times to seek out other Otto Preminger pictures, like Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) and the first twenty minutes of Bunny Lake is Missing (1965) every time it airs on TCM. If you enjoyed our  O.C. and Stiggs episode, why don't check out the other films by Robert Altman?

The exceptional Billy Wilder, who casted Preminger in Sunset Boulevard (1950), made a lot of great movies - like Sunset Boulevard - but I can see bad movie fans watching this episode's film and no other Wilder film. Kiss Me, Stupid (1964) was a misguided sex comedy aimed at adult audiences, like Showgirls (1995) or A Night in Heaven(1983). Dean Martin, going meta as Vegas singer Dino, meets a songwriter with a scheme. Songwriter hires a prostitute (Kim Novak) to play his wife, and offers Dino a night with her in exchange of singing one of their songs. OK, then.

This rare movie is now on YouTube, which is what we celebrate on this podcast. I first saw this twenty years ago at the Roxie in San Francisco. My friend Steve said something very profound to me. He said, "Man, you can bounce a quarter off of Kim Novak's ass."

Programming note: Carl and I never finished the movie, promised to return to it, but I doubt we will.

Hey pallies, likes today we return once 'gain to the blog "Movie Poster Collecting" for Dino-delight.  Likes yester-Dino-day we accented one of our Dino's swingin' 60's sex flick farces with the provocative title, "Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed from 1963.  Today we face forward  a single year to share a powerfully potent poster, plot summary, and complete youtube flick vid for our most beloved Dino's most provocative big screen appearance ever, "Kiss Me Stupid."

We've probably shared patter 'n prose more on this particular Dino-flick then any other 'cept for the Dino western classic, "Rio Bravo," and, likes of course, the quartet of Matt Helm flicks.  While critics will never ever come to agreement on this Dino-flick, one thin' that we can say with cool certainty is that our Dino was way ahead of his times in bringin' this to the screen in 1964.

Likes, while the vid of "Kiss Me Stupid" is no longer on the "Movie Poster Collecting" pad, we were able to locate it at youtube and share it with all youse Dino-holics for your Dino-viewin' pleasure.

This is a 14" x 36" US insert poster for the 1964  Billy Wilder film Kiss Me Stupid from a screenplay by Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond based on a play by Anna Bonacci and starring Dean Martin as Dino. Plot summary: In an unexpected detour the pop singer Dino finds himself in Climax Nevada, where he meets a pair of amateur songwriters Barney Milsap [Cliff Osmond] and Orville J. Spooner [Ray Walston]. The two invent a reason to keep Dino in town for a night so they can try to sell him some of their songs. Orville invites Dino to stay over with him and his wife Zelda [Felicia Farr]. Being compulsively possessive and jealous, Orville has second thoughts because he fears Dino will try to seduce Zelda, so he drives her out for the night and brings in a prostitute from the Belly Button Road House named Polly the Pistol [Kim Novak] to pose as his wife. In a bizarre turn of events, that night the fickle Orville tosses Dino out so he can sleep with Polly, who has also fallen for the idea of being a married woman even if just for a night. Dino goes to the Belly Button and meets Zelda, now a temporary occupant of Polly's trailer. He thinks Zelda is Polly and finds it easy to seduce her because she is already a fan; she also sells him one of Orville's songs.

Hey pallies, likes bein' on a Dino-high as we recently swankly shared a terrific trio of potent posts accentin' our most beloved Dino as swingin' spyster Matt Helm, we just couldn't resist puttin' the tags Dean Martin and Matt Helm into the ol' google search engine to see if more golden Dino-treasure a la Helm woulda appear.  Well likes what popped up we woulda classify as "gold," but we still couldn't resist sharin'  it with all youse Dino-philes gathered at our humble little ilovedinomartin Dino-conclave.

Likes what we found was a Dino-As-Matt-Helm post from July 15, 2014 from the blog, "WORSE MOVIES EVER MADE."  While we never ever woulda comes close to agreein' with the terrible thought that the Helmers are 'mong the "worst" flicks ever put on the big screen, we decided to share the words of blogger Bryce with youse 'cause this dude has a way with words and the problemo isn't that he describes this quartet of Dino-epics incorrectly, it's a matter that he doesn't appreciate 'em likes true Dino-holics do.

We tagged this post with what we consider one of Bryce's coolest comments 'bout our Dino as Helm..."Dino played him as a lecherous, chain-smoking, permanently pickled lounge lizard who gets more crumpet than Greggs."   We couldn't 'gree with him more on these true thoughts, but it is clear that he hasn't written them with the perspective of awesome appreciation for our Dino bein' able to play himself, cool, hip, and ever randy as Matt Helm.  Truly, it appears that commentator Bryce doesn't "get Martin."

Likes 'nother reason that we share this review with youse is that recently, on August 29 of this Dino-year,  a lone patterer tagged "konrad" has shared a deeply delightful defense of these deeply delight Dino-capers and we wanna shares his incredible insights with Dino-devotees everywhere and honor a true Dino-holic for bein' so open and affirmin' of our one and only Dino as Matt Helm.   We quote konrad.....
"I am a huge fan of the “Matt Helm” Series and I’m very distraught that it hadn’t been prolonged or revived.   In contrary to the James Bond franchise I can reenact it’s un-earnesty. It’s simply humour and Dean Martin plays its funnies with great pleasure and verve. In case of James Bond I’m still unsure whther they see it seriously or only ironically?  But with Matt Helm the satiric content is a convinced break from everyday boringness!   Why they’re seen as worst movies I have no clue.

If Austin Powers had a favourite movie spy series it would have to be the Matt Helm movies made by Dean Martin in the 1960s. Matt was a hard-as-nails U.S. government counter-agent, hero of 27 books by Donald Hamilton. Dino played him as a lecherous, chain-smoking, permanently pickled lounge lizard who gets more crumpet than Greggs. Columbia Pictures originally planned at least five Matt Helm movies, starting with The Silencers (1966), where our hero is joined by sexy Stella Stevens on a booze-fuelled mission to prevent a baddie named The Big O (played by Batman villain Victor Buono) from creating a nuclear disaster.

Dino’s Helm is so laid back that even if a nuclear bomb went of behind him he wouldn’t drop his martini glass. He has a sexy secretary named Lovey Kravesit and a small harem of stunning ‘Slaymates’ ever ready to soap his back in his king-sized tub. He’s armed with a special gun that shoots backwards, a blade-firing camera and exploding buttons.

This permanently sozzled superspy also has a fully stocked bar in his wood paneled station wagon so that he can get tanked up as he drives. Hey, it was the 60s, get over it and have one for the road.

Martin was 50 years old when he made his first Matt Helm flick and while he manages to bed every sexy woman he meets he’s not so energetic in the action scenes, But there aren’t that many of them here anyway. The critics hated this movie but Dino had the last laugh, it made a fortune at the box office and he ended up with a bigger payday than Sean Connery got from playing James Bond in the same year’s Thunderball!

Martin was back as Helm the very same year in Murderers Row (1966). The film was supposed to have been released in 1967 but Columbia’s big Christmas release, Casino Royale, was mired in production problems so the Helm pic took its place as a Yuletide treat.

This second movie in the series saw our lackadaisical hero bedding sexy Ann-Margret and trying to stop her evil dad Karl Malden (who changes his accent in every scene) from melting Washington DC with his “helio-beam.” Dino didn’t exactly knock himself out making this one. He refused to travel for Europe to do any location filming, and therefore a good proportion of the movie involves the use of an unconvincing double!

Murderer’s Row took a tip from James Bond’s You Only Live Twice and opened with Dino supposedly being murdered in his bathtub, leading to an amusing scene where his countless girlfriends all turn up to his funeral in the same outfits. The fashions here are 60s kitsch at its craziest, and again Dino is obviously just playing himself, making jokes about fellow rat-packer Frank Sinatra and knocking back whisky on the rocks as he drives. The film features a bad musical number from the pop group ‘Dino, Desi & Billy’. One member is Dean Martin’s son, and we know this because he calls out “Hi Dad!”

The gadgets here include a gun with a delayed action, so that when a baddie uses it and it doesn’t go off they inevitably look down the barrel and… that’s their lot. Cunning.

The Ambushers came next in 1967, with more off-colour jokes, scantily-clad females and plenty of lovable sexism from Dino. Meeting one well-endowed female secret agent Helm comments: “When you say you’re a ‘38’ you ain’t just kidding.”

“It’s not a gun, Mr. Helm,” she replies. “It’s the new weapon they gave me, developed right here in our labs.”

“Developed pretty well, too!” says our man with a wink to camera.

The plot of this one had Dino traveling to Mexico to retrieve a flying saucer stolen by a rogue beer manufacturer! At one point the baddies try to kill Helm by chucking him into a huge vat of ale. How daft is that? The guy who has been thrown in with him glugs frantically that he can’t swim, and Dino coolly advises him: “Drink your way to the bottom.”

Amazingly The Ambushers made a big profit at the box office and so the Helm bandwagon rolled on with The Wrecking Crew (1969). This time our hard-drinking hero linked up with sexy Sharon Tate (a tragic victim of the Manson murders only a few months after this hit cinemas) to save the world’s economy from the meltdown that seems imminent when dastardly crime baron Nigel Green hijacks $1 billion in gold.

Chuck Norris turns up in a small role and Columbia hired Bruce Lee to train Sharon for her kung fu fight with sexy Nancy Kwan – the undoubted highlight of the film. Otherwise it’s all extremely lame, with very tacky production values – at one point Dino lands on a lawn and it bounces!

While The Wrecking Crew was utter rubbish it was not much worse than previous entries, and the only reason it became the final entry in the series was because Dean Martin himself decided to call it a day.

It is believed that he was so distraught over the murder of his Wrecking Crew co-star and friend Sharon Tate that he abandoned the next already-announced Matt Helm motion picture series installment (to be titled The Ravagers), and never played the character again, though there was a short-lived TV series in the 70s starring Anthony Franciosa in the part.

If you’re a fan of Dino himself or maybe just of really trashy 60s spy flicks with swinging chicks and groovy tunes then you’ll probably get a kick out of the Matt Helm movies despite their ineptitude. All four movies are available as a box set from Amazon. Pour yourself a large martini and enjoy.

I am a huge fan of the “Matt Helm” Series and I’m very distraught that it hadn’t been prolonged or revived.
In contrary to the James Bond franchise I can reenact it’s un-earnesty. It’s simply humour and Dean Martin plays its funnies with great pleasure and verve. In case of James Bond I’m still unsure wether they see it seriously or only ironically?
But with Matt Helm the satiric content is a convinced break from everyday boringness!
