Well, likes dudes I wasn't disappointed this Dino-trip either. Below you will see a tiny Dino-treasure that I woulda be so so proud to add to my Dino-collection...or even, if I was willin' to part with it...gift to 'nother Dino-phile I know. It's a pair of connectin' magnets featurin' a very cool image of our Dino on the one and our great man's great Dino-quotation 'bout drinkin' and drivin' on the other.

As the seller pallie notes, this certainly woulda be a great "conversation starter" 'bout our ever ever wise philosopher Dino! And, likes priced at a mere 3 bucks this bit of Dino-devotion will certainly fit in any dude's Dino-budget!

Unfortunately only 1 set of Dino-mags is available...so don' tarry pallies in checkin' this out. To view this in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram. Dino-delightedly, DMP

Dean Martin--Pair of Magnets--Puzzle Quote, If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.

This pair of magnets will be a hit on any metal surface. What great conversation starters, not to mention a bit of inspirational wisdom to glance at during the day. There are inspirational quotes and there are just plain silly ones.

Taken from a jigsaw puzzle, my "Quoted Magnets", match a known quote with a known face. All quoted magnets are cut the same, so buy one set or buy 5; they will all fit together!

You will receive a pair of magnets, both lightly mounted on a white card (2"x3") with my shop name on the back and enclosed in a resealable cellophane sleeve.

These are amazing stocking stuffers, Easter basket stuffers, and even slim enough to slip in with a birthday card!

Our Dino and Miss Goldie Hawn.."they make great chemistry"

Hey pallies, likes our Dino-lovin' pallie Tyler Michael is likes back at it with his top dozen fav moments from "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" dvd. His sixth entry (7th fav moment) is that good as gold "dumb" skit between our golden man and Miss Goldie Hawn that has appeared all over the web and certainly is a very very classic Dino-moment from our most beloved Dino's most loved little screen show.

Very very cool of our pallie Ty to keeps puttin' the accent on our Dino for his faithful readership over at his flick blog, "HOLLYWOOD MOVIES AND TV REVIEWS BY TYLER MICHAEL." Likes can't wait for our dude Ty to unveil the second half of his Dino-choices...so stand tuned all our Dino-philes! 7TH FAVORITE DEAN MARTIN SHOW S.E DVD MOMENTS

MY 7TH FAVORITE MOMENT FROM "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" DVD IS...

DEAN MARTIN AND GOLDIE HAWN

This is the first time Dean and the comedic Goldie Hawn worked together and already just by watching them together, they make great chemistry. Dean is happy to meet Goldie Hawn and he loves how she pretends to be dumb on TV but Goldie tells Dean that she really is dumb and that "Dumb is beautiful". She first talks about how the smart people cause all the problems, talks about a national organization runned by dumb people,a march on Washington by tons of dumb people and proves to the audience that Dean is just as dumb as her. She gives Dean an initiation test with a Dictionary being thrown (By another dummy off screen) and the two begin to sing. This is a very funny and charming skit because as you watch Dean and Goldie giggle, talk and sing throughout the skit, you get the feeling that these two great performers are enjoying each other company and will probably do a lot more skits later on in the show. This is another wonderful chemistry with Dean and a guest star.

I always admired Dean Martin, especially when I was a kid.

Hey pallies, likes today's Dino-post proves that indeed very short is often very sweet, and one oughta never measure the depth of a pallie's Dino-devotion by the length of their Dino-reflection. Today we visit with a Mr. Craig Stroud at his recent addition to the blogsphere, "Unavailing Scrim" - Achieving little or nothing; ineffective. A piece of gauze cloth that appears opaque until lit from behind, used as a screen or backdrop; a thing that conceals or obscures something.

In his recent post simply tagged "Dean Martin," Mr. Stroud where he speaks openly and boldly 'bout his long term admiration for our most beloved Dino...." I always admired Dean Martin, especially when I was a kid." And he shares that very very touchin' pix of our great man with his boypallies Dino Jr. and Ricci, as Craig sez it...."a very casual home scene with his sons, making men out of them." And likes I couldn't agree with Stroud more when he concludes, "He seemed the ideal father, classy, warm, handsome and someone for whom drinking made him cooler not scarier." Likes indeed dudes, why of us Dino-holics woulda totally totally desires to be able to call Dino our Daddy-o?!?!?!

Indeed Mr. Craig Stroud's words are few in Dino-number, but pallies they are oh so very very long in depth, purity and truth when it comes to his Dino-devotion. ilovedinomartin says our grateful thanks to Mr. Craig Stroud for his wonderful words of Dino-adulation. To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-message. Dino-delightedly, DMP

Dean Martin

Another pleasant serendipitous find: "Dino" in a very casual home scene with his sons, making men out of them. I always admired Dean Martin, especially when I was a kid. He seemed the ideal father, classy, warm, handsome and someone for whom drinking made him cooler not scarier. This is the sort of scene fathers had with their sons. "Make a muscle, boy!" You just wanted to be a man.

Bachelor David (Martin) tries to save the marriage of his best friend Harry (Wallach) by seducing Harry’s mistress.

Hey pallies, likes today ilovedinomartin shares with you the first "new" review of "How To Save A Marriage (And Ruin Your Life)" upon it's recent release as a stand alone title. Scribed by seasoned flick critic Mr. Alonso Duralde, this review appeared recently at the blog, "Movieline."

Duralde's patter puts the accent on several categories, "WHO'S RESPONSIBLE," "WHAT's IT ALL ABOUT," "WHY IT'S FUN," and "WHY YOU SHOULD OWN IT." While Alonso's review is certainly mixed with nary a thought on our most beloved Dino, it is none-the-less cool to see him gettin' the word out 'bout 'nother of our Dino's great sex farces. His coolest thoughts are, "the movie’s très groovy visual palette (to say nothing of Stevens in a series of slinky outfits) will make for great video wallpaper at your next party.

Likes we can only hope that the recent single disc releases of "How To Save Your Marriage (And Ruin Your Life)" and "Who Was That Lady" will produce more and more in depth looks at both of these totally rad Dino-screen events. To view Mr. Alonso Duralde's review in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-message. Dino-centric, DMP

LOW: How to Save a Marriage (and Ruin Your Life) (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment; $20.95 DVD)

WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Written by Stanley Shapiro and Nate Monaster; directed by Fielder Cook; starring Dean Martin, Stella Stevens, Eli Wallach, Anne Jackson

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Bachelor David (Martin) tries to save the marriage of his best friend Harry (Wallach) by seducing Harry’s mistress. David woos Harry’s sexy employee Carol (Stevens), not realizing that Harry’s mistress is actually Muriel (Jackson, Wallach’s real-life wife). When Carol and Muriel figure out what’s going on, they plot revenge.

WHY IT’S FUN: In my house, New Year’s means another viewing of The Poseidon Adventure, which in turn reminds me of how delightful a screen presence Stella Stevens was in her heyday. One of her most charming screen performances comes in this fizzy farce, reteaming her with Martin, her co-star in the goofy spy flick The Silencers. This isn’t great cinema, by any means — and 1968 was a little late in the game for this kind of relatively innocent sexcapade — but it’s made by people well-versed in this sort of wacky farce: Shapiro won an Oscar for Pillow Talk; he and Monaster crafted another classic Doris Day romp, That Touch of Mink; and Cook’s other 1968 release was the slightly naughtier who’s-got-the-birth-control comedy Prudence and the Pill.

WHY YOU SHOULD OWN IT: Even if you’re not as much of a sucker for this era of sex comedy as I am, the movie’s très groovy visual palette (to say nothing of Stevens in a series of slinky outfits) will make for great video wallpaper at your next party.

Danny G's Sunday Serenade with Dino: "Baby Won't You Please Come Home?"

Man O Man pallies!!! Our favorite guy is REALLY feelin' the winter blues this week! Seems as though Dean & his lady friend have had a partin' of the ways...& this chick is playin' REALLY hard to get back!!!

Now even though this week's Serenade goes ALL the way back to Dino's 1964 al b um, "Dream with Dean"... "Baby Won't You Please Come Home?" still hits home with this pallie! I can STILL feel the pain & sorrow that our great great pal was goin' through cuz of this swingin' little broad!

Man, I hope she came to her senses & went runnin' back to our Dino's open arms. I'm pretty sure she did...can't believe ANYONE could resist Dean when he's singin' so so nice & so so sincere! Let's think positive pals! Enjoy!

Baby, won't you please come home
'Cause your daddy's all alone
I have tried in vain
Never no more to call your name

When you left, you broke my heart
Because I never thought we'd part
Every hour in the day
You'll hear me say
Oh, baby, come home

Baby won't you please come home

seeing Dean the king of improv on TV and Johnny Carson the king of late night on TV, together

Hey pallies, likes today we 'gain return to our new pallie Mr. Tyler Michael's fabulous movie blog, "HOLLYWOOD MOVIES AND TV REVIEWS BY TYLER MICHAEL." Ty is back folks with his 5th installment of his most fav of fav moments from "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" dvd.

This time pallie Ty shares a skit between our great man, as Ty tags him,"the king of improv on TV" and Mr. Johnny Carson, which Ty refers to as, "the king of late night on TV." 8TH FAVORITE DEAN MARTIN SHOW S.E DVD MOMENTS

MY 8TH FAVORITE MOMENT FROM "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" DVD IS...

JOHNNY CARSON'S HOSPITAL COMPLAINT

One of the best talents to see together on the show (Besides Frank Sinatra) is seeing Dean the king of improv on TV and Johnny Carson the king of late night on TV, together doing a laugh out loud skit. Yes, they have been together before but I personally think this is their best moment together. Johnny plays a patient who's complaining to the head of a hospital played by Dean. Johnny tells Dean that he and a patient switched beds and the next day they were both scheduled for an operation and Johnny got the operation that the patient was suppose to have and it was a SEX CHANGE. We find out that Johnny's character was once a girl and now is stuck with being a man. Not only do we hear funny dialogue about a whole new life for her but we also see Johnny acting all feminine. This skit always gets me laughing and at the end of the skit we meet the husband which I won't spoil it for you. It's great seeing two legends together and this is the first time I ever saw a doctor wear a tux on the job.

Dino Martin Jr. Arrested

Hey pallies, likes below are a couple of fan mag articles that were published givin' all the details of what supposedly happened when our Dino's boypallie Dino Jr. gots himself arrested for tryin' to sell an undercover cop an AK-47 machine gun. Keeps lovin' and honorin' our most beloved Dino! Dino-rememberin', DMP

On This Day In Dino-history: January 17, 1974...Dino Martin Jr. Arrested

Hey pallies, likes through the kind efforts of google Dino-'lerts, it was brought to ilovedinomartin's attentionado that it was on this very day, January 17, in the year of our Dino, 1974 that our most beloved Dino's most beloved boypallie Dino Jr. was 'rested for tryin' "to sell an undercover cop an AK-47 machine gun."

You can read all 'bout it below through the efforts of scriber Mr. Andrew Vaughan and the pallies at Gibson.com. The press certainly had a field day with this Dino-event, but as you will note below, Dino Jr. "was arrested, arraigned and baled out the next day. He’d end up with probation and a small fine."

I'm sure this was a very sad sad day in the life of family Martin, 'specially for our Dino and Dino Jr.s mother, Jeanne.

Thanks to the pallies at Gibson, and in particular Mr. Andrew Vaughan for creatin' this Dino Jr. remembrance. To read this in it's original format, likes just clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram. Dino-rememberin', DMP

This Day in Music Spotlight: Dino Martin’s Action-Packed Life

January 17, 1974

Andrew Vaughan|01.17.2011

Special thanks to ThisDayinMusic.com.

January 17, 1974 was not aparticularly good day in the eventful and erratic life of Dean Paul Martin (aka Dino), son of the legendary all-around entertainer Dean Martin. Kids of celebrities more often than not struggle to find any kind of normal in their own lives and Dino was not especially good at normal.

In the early ’70s he was on a roll. He’d fallen for movie star Olivia Hussey, tracked her down, wooed and married her and they had a son, Alex. Dino was a Hollywood golden boy and Olivia Hussey, star of Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, was the Hollywood darling of the day.

Dino had a hobby that would cause a dramatic arrest to be made at his Beverly Hills home. Since he was young, Dino had rare unusual weapons and engaged a in a bit of buying, selling and trading. On this particular occasion he tried to sell an undercover cop an AK-47 machine gun. It was strictly illegal and Martin was arrested, arraigned and baled out the next day. He’d end up with probation and a small fine.

Always looking for adventure and excitement, Martin found it hard to settle and he and Hussey split up in 1978. By then he’d become a pretty good tennis player and starred alongside Ali McGraw as a pro in the 1979 film Players, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award as Best New Star of the Year.

But acting didn’t really do it for him and he took to flying. He’d had his pilot's license since he was 16 but, in 1981, he qualified to fly with the National Guard. Sadly, he died in 1987, when his National Guard F-4 Phantom fighter jet crashed in the San Bernadino Mountains.

Of course, growing up as Dean Martin’ son must have been easy in some ways. There were some highlights in Dino’s short, but action-packed life. As a kid he was briefly a pop star with the Dino, Desi and Billy act alongside Desi Arnaz Jr., and William “Billy” Hinsche. A teenybopper outfit, they had two Top 30 hits, “I’m a Fool” and “Not the Lovin’ Kind” in the mid-’60s. But it was the way the trio got their record deal that gives most insight into what it was really like growing up celebrity royalty in Hollywood in the 1960.

Hinsche, talking to ClassicBands.com, told a great story about that day: “[Frank] Sinatra and Dean [Martin] were together at the bar at the Martin’s house. We met Mr. Sinatra, set up and played. After we did our little set, he came over with Dean and said, ‘How would you boys like to have a contract with my label, Reprise?’ ‘Sure, Mr. Sinatra,’ and that was that.”

THE NEW YEARS EVE PARTY

It's New Years Eve and Dean and Frank Sinatra are invited to a party by their friend Ken(Who'd play the piano on the show) and the parties chaperone is Ken's Mother played by Kay Medford. This skit always gives me a laugh, not just from Dean and Frank but mostly from Kay Medford because of her acting like a stereotypical mother and she's always insulting both Dean and Frank that are so mean spirited that it proves you don't need curse words to be funny and insultive. The skit really gets me roaring with laughter when the dates enter. Ken gets a beautiful girl that's taller than him, while Dean and Frank get two ugly dates (One of them being Gladys). The dialogue is funny, the casting's great and there's alot of outrageous things going on.

Dino was not more than three feet from me, he would slide down the famous “fire pole” swagger over to his bar stool, and sing “Everybody Loves Somebody,

Hey pallies, likes ilovedinomartin never ever ever tires of bringin' you true life Dino-encounters of the cool kind (and likes dudes is there ever any other variety?!?!?!) Likes today, while returnin' to the blog of WCNY FM 91.3 of Syracuse, New York to check out any more reflections left on their post, "Dean Martin's Enduring Charm" featured here on Friday, January 11th...a wonderful Dino-surprise awaited!!!!

Mr. Mike Colonna left an amazin' bit of patter 'bout his devotion to our most beloved Dino that started when he was a kid in the Windy City...and became full blown, when, believes it our not pallies....Mr. Colonna in 1970 actually worked for our King of Cool as a page for the Dino-show....where Mike "picked up the casts phone calls and messages during Sunday rehearsals, and occasionally held Deans JB water." Now ain't that simply the Dino-greatest!

Likes, I knows I am likes one totally totally envious guy when it comes to wishin' that I couldn't had the thrill of workin' for our Dino and havin' our great man "not more than three feet from me." Likes what an absolute dream come true woulda that a be!

Premo kudos to Mr. Mike Colonna for sharin' his Dino-memories with the pallies at public radio station WCNY FM 91.3. Mike Colonna says:

01/13/2013 at 5:17 pm

As a kid growing up in Chicago, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins would find their way to mom and dad’s for a Sunday feast of meatballs, spaghetti, wine and old stories about Italy, the grandparents we never knew and hilarious Italian jokes.. After a huge feast, the TV went on, it was the 50′s and The Colgate Comedy Hour, and Ed Sullivan were part of Sunday nite viewing In all it’s Black and White glory. That’s when we couldn’t wait for Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis on Sullivan’s ” Very Big Shew!” Martin and Lewis were our idols.

Years later, who would have “thunk” that after I graduated from Long Beach State, and interviewed for NBC Page job in Burbank, I would meet the famous Dean Martin, in all of his butterfliy bow tie and black tuxedo glory. My fist assignment as a Page , in 1970, was working on the Dean Martin Show. I picked up the casts phone calls and messages during Sunday rehearsals, and occasionally held Deans JB water. Dino was not more than three feet from me, he would slide down the famous “fire pole” swagger over to his bar stool, and sing “Everybody Loves Somebody,

Sometime,” Tell a few jokes, “I didn’t know what time it was, I drank my watch!” There I was standing next to my boyhood idol. Lot’s of crazy things happened on that Show, met some great people most of all I’ll never forget the charisma that Dean exuded. Everybody loved Dean. As an NBC Page we were blessed with working for Bob Hope, Sinatra, Carson, Benny, and tons of other great talents. Great memories, most of all, I will never, ever forget Dean Martin.

The Hot Mess

After the holiday hiatus, Salad Bowl Saturdays are back. Today we welcome Gayle Carline, whose most recent book is The Hot Mess. You can view the trailer here.

First of all, I want to thank the gang at Writers Who Kill for giving me a little blog love today. In the cyber-world, you can’t have too many friends. Actually, that’s true in the real world, too, but it’s a lot of Christmas cards to send out.

I’ve been uber-excited to see my third Peri Minneopa Mystery hit the shelves (ebook and paperback). In The Hot Mess, Peri investigates a house fire at Benny Needles’ home. Benny showed up as her client in Freezer Burn. I thought he was just a guest star. Turns out he’s a series regular.

Benny began life in my head as a needy little man, obsessed with Dean Martin to the point of filling his house (and emptying his inheritance) with Dino memorabilia that he bought on eBay. Peri and I found him annoying. Readers loved him and begged for him to return.

Readers rule.

Over the next two books, I realized that he has Asperger’s Syndrome, which is on the autism spectrum. As a writer, I had to push his limits, even if as a person I want to protect him. So I set fire to his house after a bunch of teenage boys break in for a late night party. Sadly, one of the boys is found in the ashes.

Then I let Peri step in and pick up the pieces. Not only does she have to fight the authorities to prove the fire was arson, but along the way there are family secrets to discover and family problems to overcome. As usual, she has her boyfriend, Detective Skip Carlton, to lean on, as well as her BFF, Assistant Coroner Blanche Debussy.

To make it all harder for her, Benny is acting as her assistant. He is inept with a side of well-meaning. It’s a fun story with a little for everyone—humor, poignancy, and even romance.

Some of my readers have remarked that they think The Hot Mess is my best book ever. Like I said, readers rule.

Here’s a little excerpt:

Benny scampered up to Peri, a wrinkled brown bag in his hand. He held it out to her, looked at it, and took it back. He spent several seconds smoothing the wrinkles as best he could, then handed it to her at last.

“Thank you,” Peri told him, and reached inside. It was a Dean Martin bobblehead doll, his body bouncing as she held onto his oversized head.

“Do you like it? I figure you can put it on your dashboard. Or maybe on that shelf where the blue moose was.”

The blue ceramic moose had been knocked from her curio shelf by Matt Helm while she was providing a foster home for him. Benny had been caring for the cat, and suggested several times that she needed more Dino stuff in her house. She guessed her gift was his attempt at starting the trend.

“Sounds like a perfect spot,” Skip said.

Benny didn’t seem to hear him. He was examining his ashtray again, fingering all the grooves and tracing the curves. He popped from his reverie to face her. “Miss Peri, I want to hire you.”

“To do what?”

He rolled his eyes. “To find out what happened to my house. Somebody must’ve killed that guy and tried to burn my house down to hide the body.” She looked up at Skip, who kissed the top of her head. “I got what I needed. You’re on your own.”

“Oh, I don’t know,” she said, watching the detective walk to his car and thinking, coward. “The fire chief says—”

“The fire chief is wrong.” He cut her off. “I never bought a can of paint in my life, and I never put anything next to wires or outlets or the stove or matches or, or, or anything hot. My mom taught me better. I may have a lot of stuff in my house, but I know the rules. Somebody set the fire. And you can find out who.”

“Oh, I don’t know.” Peri repeated herself, in an attempt to consider what he was saying. “I’m not a fire investigator.”

“But you will talk to the investigator, just like you talk to the police officers and figure things out. I can help you, too, like I did before.” “You’re finished with your co

mmunity service hours, and I can’t afford to hire you.” “Why not? In jail, we found out minimum wage is eight dollars an hour. Charge me eight dollars more than your regular fee, then when I pay you, you pay me my eight dollars.”

“While mathematically correct, it sounds a little crazy,” Peri said. Phil agreed. “Sounds like you’re paying to work for her.”

“But I have plenty of money,” Benny told them. “And when the insurance pays me, I’ll have even more money.”

Peri saw his hands massaging the ashtray. They worked together, kneading his stress into the glass. Here was a guy who could make it through life as long as there weren’t any problems, but problems wouldn’t leave him alone. She felt her heart soften. “Okay, Ben, I’ll at least look into everything. But you don’t have to help me.”

“Oh, thank you. If you need my help, ask me.” Benny turned back to the Mercedes, where Phil was helping Nancy into the front seat.

“And Benny…” Peri wanted to remind him the insurance money was to pay for fixing the house, not buying more Dean Martin posters. She watched him turn back to her, his face down. He was looking at his ashtray.

“I’ll call you when I know something.” She couldn’t bear to force him into more reality. Not today.

Peri watched Benny hop in behind Phil. The older gentleman said something over his shoulder, and she saw Benny’s head bobbing in agreement, while his body made the motions of stretching a seatbelt across his lap.

Walking to her own car, she thought about Benny’s request. Fire investigations were not even on her menu of services. Still, she could use the money, she wanted to help Benny, and she was curious. Arson to cover the murder made no sense at all, since the fire was in one room and the body was in another. What had happened in Benny’s house that night?

She got into the driver’s seat, adjusted the steering wheel and set Dino the Bobblehead on her dash. Flicking his head once made it bounce in a perky, if chaotic, rhythm.

“I have no idea what I’m doing,” she told the doll. “Ain’t that a kick in the head?”

Look, what's playing at the Roxy?
I'll tell you what's playing in the Roxy.
A picture about a Minnesota man so in love with a Mississippi girl,
That he sacrifices everything and moves all the way to Malacksy.
That's what's playing at the Roxy.
What's in the daily news? I'll tell what's in the daily news.
Story about a guy who bought his wife a small ruby,
With what otherwise would have been his union dues.
That's what's on the daily news.
What's happening all over? I'll tell you what is happening all over.
Guys sitting home before the television set who used to be something of a rover.
That is what's happening all over.
What is the thing that has licked 'em?
And it looks like I am just another victim.

Yes sir, when you see a guy reach for stars in the sky,
You can bet that he's doing it for some doll
When you spot a john waiting out in the rain,
Chances are he's insane, as only a john can be for a jane.
When you meet a gent paying all kinds of rent
For a flat that could flatten the Taj Mahal,
Call it bad, call it funny, but it's better than even money,
That's the guy that's only doing it for some doll.
When you see a Joe, saving half of his dough,
You can bet they'll be minting it for some doll,
When a bum buys wine like a bum can't afford,
It's a cinch that the bum is under the thumb of some little broad
When you meet a mug lately out of the jug,
And he's still lifting platinum for the roll,
Call its hell, call it heaven, it's a probable twelve to seven
That's a guy that's only doing it for some doll.

10TH FAVORITE DEAN MARTIN SHOW S.E DVD MOMENTS

MY 10TH FAVORITE MOMENT FROM "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" DVD IS...

THE SWORDS MAGIC ACT

(NO IMAGE AVAILABLE)

This was a short and brief skit. Dean is put in a box for a magic act by his pretty girls. The girls put the swords in the box, leave them in for 5 seconds, take the swords out and Dean comes out unharmed. However,he gets himself a drink and water is squirting out of his body. If that's not funny enough, as Dean is talking to the audience water unexpectedly keeps squiring out of him. Dean went through with any over the top non sense in this unrehearsed show and this short skit definitely proves it.

Dean Martin’s Enduring Appeal

January 10th, 2013 | Posted by joeyn

On CIAO! Sunday we’re talking about Dean Martin’s image and appeal to generations born after his time along with selections from his recorded library of songs to punctuate our thoughts.

When Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis went their separate ways all bets were that the seemingly light weight Martin would fade away… and certainly when they sang the infectious “That’s Amore” in the film, “The Caddy” in 1953, neither one would have suspected that the song would only gain in popularity over the years…AND that it would be Martin’s voice and persona that would live on far beyond his seemingly charmed life here on earth. (Note: In the film Jerry Lewis sings characteristically silly lyrics between Martin’s singing like “If you still kiss your girl after garlic and oil, that’s amore?).

Dean Martin, they say, has said that the two biggest turning points in his career were “meeting Jerry Lewis” and “leaving Jerry Lewis.” The “straight man” to the driven and manic Lewis, Dean Martin had already been singing with the Sammy Watkins Orchestra in Cleveland and on radio in the early 1940s before he and his wife of two years left Cleveland for New York City where his destiny awaited.

Martin and Lewis began their nightclub and motion picture partnership when they started clowning around in each other’s acts when both were booked at the same nightclub. Actually, it’s said that Jerry Lewis was so dazzled by the handsome and charismatic Martin that to get his attention he burst onstage with a prank during Martin’s singing act. Martin, to his credit, didn’t get angry and played along. This is undoubtedly where he settled into his poised, cool and smooth persona.

A few months later they were in Atlantic City with an “act.” In an interview with writer Pete Martin, Martin said “We’d do anything that came to our minds, anything at all…it was wonderful.” That was 1945 and they became one of America’s favorite acts. But ten years later after 16 films and endless appearances together they weren’t even on speaking terms. They played their last show together in July 1956 at the famed Copacabana. The reasons are as complex as the two men but understandable in the fast and unpredictable world of show biz.

But let’s go back much earlier in time. Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti on June 17, 1917, in Steubenville, Ohio to Italian American Angela Barra and Gaetano Crocetti an Italian immigrant barber from a mountainous province in Abruzzo. Nothing in his youth would give any hint of the wildly successful career and lasting fame that would be his destiny. He spoke only Italian until he was 5 years old and quit school at 16 taking jobs delivering bootleg liquor, working as a speakeasy croupier and blackjack dealer, a steel mill worker and as the welterweight boxer. Yes, he got knocked round a bit and eventually had a nose job in the 1940s to restore his ruggedly chiseled profile. But during those years he had gotten to know club owners from his work around town leading to the beginning of his singing career. Though he changed his name he was never afraid to sing in his native tongue, Italian. (clip of “Luna Mezzo Mare” in perfect dialect).

His success in stage, screen and song is well chronicled…he conquered radio, TV, films, nightclubs, comedy…have I left anything out?!

One thing that is known about Dean Martin is that he deliberately and masterfully didn’t take himself too seriously unlike Sinatra whose favorite toast was “I hope you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.” This may have been his “secret” . Though he made it look easy, it’s said that prided himself on memorizing whole scripts, not just his own parts. He didn’t like to rehearse because he felt his best performance was his first!

His impish grin, warm voice and cool exterior has drawn fans from several generations, even after his death. His presence is everywhere in the world wide web, attracting generations of young men who want some of what he had…COOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (♫ clip of “Little Ole Wine Drinker Me).

His voice is easily recognizable and when you hear it, you want to take a deep breath, relax…and maybe have a glass of wine? Well, he did have a “wine, women and song” reputation, but when asked about that in one interview, he paused a moment before responding and characteristically quietly and nonchalantly said, “Hmmp…women and song…I’m not too crazy about wine…what else is there to say about me?…I love to sing…and I love women.”

Dean Martin died on Christmas Day, 1995 but not without first experiencing his share of deep sadness and tragedy. He was married three times fathering eight children. His son Dean Paul was killed in an air crash in 1987. This tragedy was made even more painful because his remains were never found…and Dean Martin began to withdraw from the glitter and glamour of the world he had owned for decades.

This jazz standard written in the 1930s and recreated by many, smoothly sung by Frank Sinatra, achingly sad by Jo Stafford, romantically by the British chanteuse Vera Lynn but never so beguilingly certain as Dean Martin. (Dean Martin’s “I’ll Be Seeing You”).

As always, CIAO! is where you can celebrate the Italian in YOU! Join us every Sunday afternoon at 3:00 WCNY FM 91.3 on your dial with me, Joey Nigro and my co-host Jim Battaglia (or online at www.wcny.org/radio). Italians love to say, “Canta che ti passa!” “Sing that it will pass!” so we always feature great music…a mix of old and new songs by our Italian American artists and Italian singers and composers…music that will lift your spirits…and music that you won’t hear anywhere else!

Topics you will hear in future CIAO! programs range from the culture, beauty and history of Italy and the regions where Italian American families claim their roots; stories of immigration and assimilation, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes humorous…but always heartwarming; memories of the old neighborhoods; entertaining pieces on noteworthy Italians Americans and interviews with celebrities or ordinary Italian Americans with a story to tell.

Hey pallies, likes 'gain we return to our new Dino-focused pallie Tyler Michael's blog, "HOLLYWOOD MOVIES AND TV REVIEWS BY TYLER MICHAEL," for 'nother cool cool installment of his twelve part series, "FAVORITE DEAN MARTIN SHOW S.E DVD MOMENTS." 11TH FAVORITE DEAN MARTIN SHOW S.E DVD MOMENTS

MY 11TH FAVORITE MOMENT FROM "THE BEST OF THE DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW:SPECIAL EDITION" DVD IS...

A GAME OF MUSICAL QUESTION MESS UP

In a reacquiring skit called "Musical Question",the pretty girls would come down the stairs, sing the question on the card and Dean would sing them an answer. At first it starts out smooth but as the third girl sings, she messes up the words to a song by singing "Mere alcohol doesn't thrill me at all", the girl stops in embarrassment and Dean laughs and tells the audience that "She made a mistake" and is glad it wasn't him. He corrects her by telling her the lyric before the lyric she just sang, humors the girl and decides to do the whole song all over again just for her. As the girls sing their song again, the girl who messed up got it correct and a proud Dean Martin briefly kisses her on the cheek and beautifully sings her the answer. This was no outtake or blooper this was actually aired live on TV. That was part of the fun on the show, you didn't know what was going to happen or if somebody was going to mess up and when they did,Dean would get a good laugh, fix the mistake and sometimes redo the whole song or skit.

"Well, I most decidedly love Dean Martin....."

Hey pallies, likes well the good ol' pallies at google blog search has landed ilovedinomartin at 'nother very recently started blog. In this case, the blog has the very poetic title of "Ashes From Burnt Roses," by a blogger known as Manny. From his bio we know that Manny lives in the Big Apple and works as an engineer...and, likes from his post, we know that he "most decidedly" loves our Dino!

ilovedinomartin "most decidedly" is delighted to have been pointed in Manny's direction to soak in his Dino-devotion in his recent post, "Dean Martin Appreciation." As you will note, his Dino-reflections have come in response to one of his blogger friends, Jan's Dino-quire at her blog,"Run At Angels." (If, as usual, you clicks on the tag of this Dino-post, you will be able to go to Jan's blog and see how this Dino-action all began.)

While, I gotta 'fess up that I don't agree with our new pallie Manny's belief that Mr. Sinatra is a greater singer then our most beloved Dino, Mr. Manny does indeed scribe many many wonderful words of Dino-wisdom for his readers to grow in their Dino-appreciato. Likes I coulda elaborate on Manny's Dino-insights, but then likes why woulda you have to read 'em for yourselves. Likes as our Dino once wisely stated...."If I sing the whole song...why buy the al-b-um."

So, likes dudes, enjoy Manny's reflections on our Dino's classy style, and let's us know what you thinks. ilovedinomartin says thank you very Dino-much to pallie Manny for his wise and wonderful words of Dino-understandin' and Dino-appreciato. Thanks man for helpin' bring others into true true "Dean Martin Appreciation." Dino-always, ever, and only, DMP

Dean Martin Appreciation

Jan at Runs With Angels…Lives With Saints asks if you like Dean Martin.

Raise your hand if you love Dean Martin… I knew it! Everyone loves Dean Martin except College Girl – she thinks Frank Sinatra is better. But even she likes Dean Martin.

Well, I most decidedly love Dean Martin, but I do have to say that Frank Sinatra is the greatest singer of what I guess is called American Popular Song. Besides the better voice, Sinatra’s articulation has a much wider expressive range. But Dean Martin I think is vastly underrated, and that’s what this blog is about, appreciating Dino.

What strikes me about Dean Martin is that he projects a nice guy in his voice. He’s not the star quarterback type say like Elvis where girls just throw themselves toward him. He’s the type whom girls feel comfortable with, and are most definitely attracted to, but fathers would prefer their daughters marry someone else. Why? Well, I can’t help feeling this, but he projects someone who doesn’t work very hard and ultimately will be a failure in life. He’s so laid back, so relaxed in his tone, that the pleasure of a glass of wine or two or three are more important than getting to work. There’s a passivity to his voice—he doesn’t sound like he’s out to grab the world by the throat—and the songs where he excels are those where the lyrics accentuate the passivity in his tone. Take “That’s Amore.”

When the moon hits your eye

Like a big pizza pie, that's amore

That's amore

When the world seems to shine

Like you've had too much wine, that's amore

That's amore

“When the moon hits your eye” is a passive event, an outside object effecting the person. It’s not like the singer went out to find love, it found him, possibly while crossing a restaurant with a glass of wine and some pretty girl stumbles into you and spills the wine across your jacket. It’s like low and behold, what just happened? Here’s this marvelous song.

Also notice how the humor and, even more so, the lack of seriousness adds to the sense of a lack of ambition. Love is compared to a big pizza pie hitting you in the eye! LOL! That’s not very deep. There have been great philosophers who have pondered love, but Dino aint going anywhere near them. But that’s Dean. I love the way there’s a sort of chuckle in his articulation on those silly lines. He knows he’s not serious, but why should it be serious? And notice how he embellishes “Vita bella” at the 45 second mark as if that is all that’s important in life.

Now I have no idea whether Dean Martin's personal life was so laid back, unserious, and sensualist, but that's the singing persona I pick up. He certainly was no personal failure. Here’s another great song, perhaps his best in the way phrases lines.

Again, the passivity—luck just found him and love kicked him—but I think what he does so great here is that split note of pause between most of the phrases leading up to his life going to be “Beee-uuu-ti-fuuul.” He really sells that beautiful life in the sun-shine.

And then nothing projects failure as “Little Old Wine Drinker Me.” While the song doesn’t actually say it, but one can’t help feel that the drinking was part of the problem. After all, he’s the wine drinker fool in the corner. But it’s a sophisticating drinking. He’s not sucking down beers or whiskey but wine, someone who just likes to enjoy life a bit too much and probably drove his girl to the brink.

Well, there are other great songs. I particularly like “Volare,” “Mambo Italiano,” “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You,” “In the Chapel in the Moonlight,” and “Sway.” Which ones do you like?

Dean Martin a person who will be remembered!

Posted on December 27, 2012 by mrjones2

Dean Martin began his show business career at age seventeen, singing in Ohio nightclubs near his hometown. During a stint with the Ernie McKay band, he was noticed by Cleveland bandleader Sammy Watkins, who hired him as the band’s featured vocalist. He began touring with Watkins in 1938, and in 1940, changed his name to Dean Martin. In September 1943, Martin signed an exclusive contract with MCA to sing at the Riobamba Room in New York, and in 1944 he was given his own fifteen-minute radio program broadcasting from New York City, Songs by Dean Martin. In 1946 he signed a contract and recorded four songs with Diamond Records.

During a club engagement in 1946, Martin met Jerry Lewis and the two began joking around with each other during their respective acts. They teamed up in 1947, with Martin playing the straight man to Lewis’s clown. NBC broadcast a regular thirty-minute radio program featuring the pair in 1949, and they made their television debut in the Colgate Comedy Hour in 1950. The immensely popular Martin and Lewis team made sixteen films together between 1949 and 1956.

Martin and Lewis last performed together at the Copacabana in New York, on July 24, 1956. After ten years as a team, they split up due to creative differences. Martin struck out on his own and resumed his singing career, recording such Dean Martin Songs for Capitol as “That’s Amore,” “Memories are Made of This,” “When You’re Smiling,” and “Oh Marie.” He also resumed acting in films, and in 1958, Martin received critical acclaim after appearing with Montgomery Clift andMarlon Brando in The Young Lions. In 1962, Martin left Capitol Records and signed with Reprise. All the Dean Martin music is absolutely marvelous and now you can listen to his best songs free.

In 1964, he recorded his blockbuster hit, “Everybody Loves Somebody,” which beat the Beatles to become the No. 1 hit in America for one week. It became the theme song for his television variety series, The Dean Martin Show, which ran on NBC for eight years starting in 1965. Martin followed this with The Dean Martin Comedy Hour, which ran from 1973 to 1974. An indelible part of Martin’s television “schtick” was his comedic portrayal of life as an alcoholic lush, which many people never realized was just an act. Nevertheless he was a great singer of all time and nowadays all his great tracks are able to download.

Martin was married three times, first to wife Elizabeth Anne McDonald on October 2, 1941. The couple had four children: Stephen (Craig), born June 29, 1942; Claudia, born March 16, 1944; Barbara (Gail), born April 11, 1945; and Deana (Dina), born August 19, 1948. He married second wife Jeanne Biegger on September 1, 1949 and had three children: Dino Paul Jr., born November 17, 1951; Ricci James, born September 20, 1953; and Gina Caroline, born December 20, 1956. In 1973, Martin married third wife Catherine Mae Hawn, and adopted a daughter Sasha. Their marriage ended in 1976.

Martin suffered a tragic loss when his son, Dino Jr., was killed in a plane crash during a military training exercise in 1987. He retired from show business after a 1988-89 concert tour with fellow rat-packers Sammy Davis, Jr. and Frank Sinatra, which ended for Martin after he became ill and was replaced by Liza Minelli for the remainder of the tour. Martin died of acute respiratory failure in Beverly Hills on December 25, 1995. But Dean Marin Music will always be in our hearts.
