This was the final film in the Matt Helm series.

Hey pallies, our pal Mr. George Solana is a man true to his Dino-word. Here is the first installment of his vid caps for the last of the Matt Helm quartet..."The Wrecking Crew." My fav of this set of caps is the second...of our Dino viewin' some lovlies connected to the heist....loves when our great man says of the chicks..."I like his style, I really like his style."

To view these at Mr. Solana's pad, "Cinema Vortex," just click on the tagg of this Dino-gram. As we begin our second half of celebratin' Dino-amore-month, we thanks George for showin' such devoted Dino-love to helps spread the Dino-message as a true Dino-devotee and true Helmer!!! Matt Helm

Wrecking Crew (1969)
Directed by Phil Karlson
Screenplay by William P. McGivern
Starring Dean Martin for the last time as Matt Helm
Elke Sommer
Sharon Tate (in one of her last roles)
Nancy Kwan
Nigel Green
Chuck Norris (His first film role)
Tina Louise
John Larch

This was the final film in the Matt Helm series. Although plans were afoot for a fifth film ("The Ravagers"), as well as a proposed teaming with Frank Sinatra for "Matt Helm Meets Tony Rome", the poor box-office showing of both "The Wrecking Crew" and Sinatra's second go round as Rome in "Lady In Cement" brought the Matt Helm series to an end.

Today is a very important day in Dino-history...this day, February 13, in the year of our Dino 1962 our great man said no to Capitol Records to renew his contract and moved over to his pallie frankie's new label Reprise.

Our Dino is always the man of action, always the man who lives life on his own terms, and by sayin' no to Capitol, he created his own production company, Claude Productions, and thus had the power to control his own destiny!

Thanks to Mr. Mark for showin' such Dino-love and sharin' this Dino-detail with us. To read his whole post, just click on the title of this Dino-gram. Pallies like Mr. Mark Heimback-Nielsen are helpin' others to gain Dino-knowledge and grow in their Dino-devotion.

I loves so much findin' all these new Dino-discoveries, and likes how great to know that durin' this month of amore when we put the accent on lovin' our Dino that we can share how Dino shows such affection for his sidekick jer. “You Skinny Hebrew”

By: Dean Dino Martin

Never before Available to the General Public

(A 1953 humorous & satirical birthday tribute song from Dean Martin to Jerry Lewis)

Dean Martin (June 7, 1917 – December 25, 1995), born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio to Italian immigrant parents, Gaetano and Angela Crocetti.

Martin and Lewis' official debut together occurred at Atlantic City's 500 Club on July 24, 1946 and they were not well received.. More than a few people dubbed them "The Organ Grinder and the Monkey".

Lewis and Martin agreed to "go for broke", to throw out the pre-scripted gags and to improvise. Dean sang and Jerry came out dressed as a busboy, dropping plates and making a shambles of both Martin's performance and the club's sense of decorum until Lewis was chased from the room as Martin pelted him with breadrolls. They did slapstick, reeled off old vaudeville jokes, and did whatever else popped into their heads at the moment. This time, the audience doubled over in laughter. This success led to a series of well-paying engagements on the Eastern seaboard, culminating in a triumphant run at New York's Copacabana.

The act broke up in 1956, 10 years to the day from the first official teaming.

Dino made a public reconciliation with Jerry Lewis on Lewis' Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon in 1976. Frank Sinatra shocked Lewis and the world by bringing Martin out on stage. As Martin and Lewis embraced, the audience erupted in cheers and the phone banks lit up, resulting in one of the telethon's most profitable years. Lewis reported the event was one of the three most memorable of his life. Lewis brought down the house when he quipped, "So, you working?" Martin, playing drunk, replied that he was "at the Meggum" – this reference to the MGM Grand Hotel convulsed Lewis. This, along with the death of Martin's son Dean Paul Martin a few years later, helped to bring the two men together. They maintained a quiet friendship but only performed together again once, in 1989, on Dean's 72nd birthday.

Martin died of acute respiratory failure at his home on Christmas morning 1995, at the age of 78.

"You look like Dean Martin!"

Hey pallies, from the Boston Globe's pad "Boston.com" comes news of famous novelist Don DeLillo's delight in our Dino. On this twelvth day of Dino-amore-month, I shares with you a portion of a review of DeLillo's latest tome, "Point Omega." In an review tagged "An author who knows his cinema" by Glober Mark Feeney, Mr. Feeney shares near the end of the prose 'bout the first time he met Mr. DeLillo. On seein' DeLillo, Feeney blurted out, “You look like Dean Martin!" To which author DeLillo responded, "Have you read the book?" Well, you can read that and the rest below. I likes find it just so Dino-thrillin' to learn 'bout 'nother of the rich and famous who loves our Dino. Cheers to reviewer Feeney for sharin' his personal encounter with DeLillo, liftin' up the name of our Dino, and helpin' all of us to know 'nother's true Dino-passion. As usual, to read the whole review, just click on the title of today's Dino-gram. Dino-yearnin', DMP

I’ve met DeLillo twice. The first time was for an interview, at his publisher’s offices, when “Underworld’’ came out. The elevator door opened, and there he stood. He looked much as he does in his author photos: graying hair, chiseled features, Italianate good looks. There was one difference. He wore oversized glasses with dark frames, the kind Martin Scorsese wears or a certain singer did while hosting celebrity roasts in the ’70s. “You look like Dean Martin!’’ I blurted out. DeLillo nodded.

“Have you read the book?’’ he asked. There was only one book he could have meant: Nick Tosches’s magnificent, nihilistic “Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams.’’ That was it, all right. DeLillo was a big fan. Martin’s partner, as you might imagine, figures almost as much in the book as Dino does. Let there be no doubt: Don DeLillo is a man who knows his Jerry Lewis, raccoon and all.

Sinatra, Martin to receive stars in Las Vegas

By OSKAR GARCIA

Associated Press Writer

In this May 18, 1977 file photo, performers Frank Sinatra, right, and Dean Martin mix drinks on the stage of the Westchester Premier Theater in Tarrytown, N.Y., during the opening night of their act.

Sin City is paying homage to iconic singers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin by giving them each a place on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars.

Las Vegas Walk of Stars spokesman Pablo Castro Zavala said stars for the crooners would be unveiled Feb. 22 in a ceremony at the Flamingo Las Vegas casino-resort. The stars will then be placed in the sidewalk outside the Flamingo on the Las Vegas Strip.

Sinatra and Martin are icons of Sin City entertainment because of their appearances on stage, in film and on television.

The Rat Pack performers appeared in the 1960 movie "Ocean's Eleven," about a plan to rob five Las Vegas casinos in one night.

Officials say Dean Martin's daughter Deana Martin will accept his star on behalf of her father.

random friday, 1964 edition: dean martin, “everybody loves somebody”

When I think of Dean Martin, two things in particular come to mind. One, obviously, is Rio Bravo. The other is my father, who was a big fan of Dino. I’ve been considering this in the context of today’s random track. Sinatra ruled the roost for my parents when I was growing up, but now I wonder if that was more my mom’s doing. Not to say my dad didn’t like Frank, too, but it was my mom who loved Only the Lonely. And while my dad watched Dean Martin’s TV show religiously, I don’t remember if my mom even stayed up for it (memories are tenuous, of course). I think I’m at least right that my dad liked Dean Martin more than my mom did.

The basics of Martin’s career: a mildly-popular crooner teams up with Jerry Lewis, they become the most popular act of the pre-rock and roll era, radio and movies follow.

They split, Martin’s career stumbles a bit, then he hits his stride in movies and on record. (Yes, I posted this on the Ricky Nelson one, as well.)

In 1965, Martin’s own TV series begins … it ran for nine seasons, and spawned celebrity roast specials that ran for another decade.

The thing I find most interesting is how Martin was able to maintain his popularity long past the time rock and roll had taken over popular music. He made the Top Ten in 1949, and hit #1 in 1955 with “Memories Are Made of This.” By 1964, while Martin was still well-known as an actor, he hadn’t made the Top Ten for years, and the Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion would seem to have made Martin’s music irrelevant. Even his own son played in a rock and roll band, Dino, Desi & Billy, which apparently didn’t impress Dad very much. One day, the story goes, Dad told Son that he was tired of hearing about the Beatles, and he was going knock them off the charts. “Everybody Loves Somebody” did exactly that, pushing “A Hard Day’s Night” aside. (Wikipedia notes, “Dean Martin became the only person in history to ever predict he'd knock the Beatles off the charts, and actually succeed.”) Martin made the Top Ten twice more over the next year.

Why did my dad love this guy so much? The answer, I think, has something to do with the music, of course … Martin developed into a talented crooner over the years. But more than that, it was the Dean Martin persona. Not the amiable drunk (which was largely a myth), but the guy was so cool, he even out-cooled the other members of the Rat Pack. On his TV series, Martin perfected an aura of casualness that was extremely appealing. Men of my father’s age might have used Sinatra to get their wives in the mood for love, but they wanted to BE Dean Martin. (And yes, I know I’m making a huge leap here, but hey, it’s my blog, and my dad’s no longer with us to set me straight.)

Dean Martin, forever cool. In fact, in 2007, one of those technological marvels whereby dead people sing duets with living people was released under Dean’s name. It was called Forever Cool, and his duet with Martina McBride on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” made it to #7 on the Adult Contemporary charts.

On This Day In Dinohistory: February 4, 1953 "The Stooge" Premiers

Hey pallies, likes on this fourth day of Dino-amore-month we celebrate a significant day in Dino-history, February 4, 1953....the Dino-date that the classic Dino and the jer flick "The Stooge" made it's debut at the Paramount Theatre in New York City. We thanks the pallies at ABA DSS for sharin' this Dino-detail with us (to read it in it's original format, just click on the title of this post).

A visit to the "The Stooge" entry at Wikipedia yields this information....
"The Stooge was filmed between February 19 and March 24, 1951 and although it was filmed before two other Martin and Lewis films, Sailor Beware and Jumping Jacks, this film was withheld from distribution by Paramount because they were concerned about the audience's reaction to the way Martin treated Lewis in the film."

Interestin' that it was in the month of Dino-amore, that this more serious Martin and Lewis classic was released....and it is said to be the favorite film of the duo...especially of Mr. Lewis. Indeed in parts of the film our Dino treats the kid harshly...but by the wonderful end of this flick the bromantic relationship between our Dino and the kid has been perfectly re-established.

Hopes you will enjoy the pix and posters from this marvelously wonderful Dino-pix, as well as the entire film shared here for your Dino-viewin' pleasure. Dino-lovin'ly, DMP

1953 - Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis appeared in the film, The Stooge, which premiered this day at the Paramount Theatre in New York City. The comedy duo went dramatic in this film -- which had been sitting on the shelves of the Hal Wallis Studios until that time.

Cushy job there, Dean.

Hey pallies, likes welcome to the start of Dino-amore-month here at ilovedinomartin. When the Dino-calendar turns to Febuary, all true Dino-philes knows it is time to start celebratin' the month of Amore....Dino-style! Those in the know, know that what the world tagged Valentine's Day is truly Dino-amore-day 'cause no one ever was our ever will be more amore then our Dino.

Today's Dino-discovery is a very lovin' way of startin' the Dino-amorin' Dino-season off to a bang! From the blogg pad "Strider’s Journal" comes this pix of the al-b-um cover from "The Silencers' where our Dino as Matt Helm is makin' it with all those chicks on his hot round bed.

I likes agrees with some of Strider's patter, and disagrees with other of his Dino-comments. I agrees with the thoughts "Cushy job there, Dean." What red blooded male woulda wanna be surrounded with all those lovelies?!??!?! But when this dude observes...."I can’t see Matt Helm’s agency remaining secret if he continues to chase women."....just can't sees it that Dino-way. Our Dino never needs to pursue the babes, they comes after him. What chick if her right mind woulda wanna haves our Dino as her man?!??!?!

Cushy job there, Dean.

Dino Paul Crocetti, known as Dean Martin (1917-1995), played secret agent Matt Helm in the 1966 movie The Silencers.

I can’t see Matt Helm’s agency remaining secret if he continues to chase women.

Your Mental Sorbet: Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin reunion

Hey pallies, on this last day of January, as we anticipate the beginnin' of Dino-amore-month tomorrow right here at ilovedinomartin, we share a Dino-vid posted at the groovy blog "Child Of Television." Shared by blogger Tony Figueroa, this "Mental Sorbet" features our Dino and the jer makin' up durin' the jer's MDA telethon back, as I recall, in the Dino-year of 1976. In this case I have a hunch that any "sorbet" comsumed by our Dino woulda had to been flavored with a bit of J&B!

And, as Tony sez, anythin' that includes our Dino certainly does takes out any "bad taste in our mouths." Loves to see how amorin' our Dino and the jer are in this piece of priceless Dino-history recorded for Dino-posterity! To checks this out in it's original blog format, just clicks on the title of this Dino-gram. Dino-only, DMP

Your Mental Sorbet: Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin reunion

Here is another "Mental Sorbet" that we could use to momentarily forget about those things that leave a bad taste in our mouths.

Now that the dust appears to be settling from our latest late night talk show war and in the interest of not being cynical he is a famous show-biz reconciliation.

Dino has held forth as the host of Sammy’s bar area

Hey pallies, 'and now, direct from the bar, Dean Martin!' That tagg line is how our Dino was introduced in 'Vegas and other spots as he began his live performances. So, it oughta be no surprise that where our Dino has turned up next is in a bar, Sammy Patrenella's bar...well that is a "robotic version" of our Dino graces the bar at Patrenella’s Ristorante Italiano in Houston.

Today's Dino-post is from the blog "The Pecan Park Eagle" by Mr. Bill McCurdy (clicks ont title of this post to go there). Mr. McCurdy's write-up of Sammy Patrenella's Sicilian eatery is so well done, I have decided to share the whole thin' this Dino-time, not just the cool Dino-mention, 'cause this joint is surely a pad that our Dino woulda loves to wine and dine in. Knows that if I am ever gets Houston way that I will stops by to meet our Dino in the bar for a drinks and stay for some homemade Italiano delights.

Thanks to McCurdy for not only sharin' the Sammy Patrenella story with us, but for liftin' up the name of our Dino as well.... Dino-delightedly, DMP

A Short Ride on Houston’s First Rail System.

The Sicilian Joy of Patrenella’s!
By Bill McCurdy

Patrenella's and the best authentic Sicilian cuisine in Houston is located at 813 Jackson Hill, at the corner of Jackson Hill and Barnes, just one block south of where the street "Ts" into Washington Avenue. NOTE: Patrenella's has its own Bocce Court too.

Sammy Patrenella, 75, and his Patrenella’s Ristorante Italiano are both Houston classics. If you have never tried Sammy’s classic Sicilian fare, you really owe it to your palate to do so. Come for the food and stay for the joy. You will be dining in a place built on the love of family, friends, and the best, most truly delicious Sicilian food in Houston when you do.

The menu includes the best beef, chicken, and seafood offerings that come to mind from the mention of any Italian food dishes, all prepared according to ancient family recipes and served with the freshest vegetable fare, pasta dishes, marinara sauce, and special oil seasonings that the veteran diner comes to expect from the true artists of Italian cooking. Patrenella’s isn’t simply good enough for Houston. It is a place that could easily hold its own with the best Italian places in The Hill section of St. Louis. Patrenella’s also bakes its own bread and offers some of the most delicious pizza in town as well. It contains its own small bar and offers all the right options of good wine to go with all the right foods for those who choose the fully European experience in dining.

In spite of its royal good taste choices in food and drink, Patrenella’s is laid back and casual in the way most Houstonians prefer their dining out experiences. Coat and tie or sporting casual wear are welcomed equally at “Sammy’s Place.”

Patrenella’s is open for lunch, Tuesday through Friday, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and for dinner, Tuesday through Saturday, from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM. No lunch service is available on Saturdays and the restaurant is fully closed on Sundays and Mondays. For evening reservations, simply call 713-863-8223.

The Patrenella family home from 1938 is now the front door on a chain of three houses that owner Sammy Patrenella has strung together as the new home of his restaurant since 1991!

The story of Patrenella’s Ristorante Italiano is best told by Sammy Patrenella himself. You will find these same words on the back cover of his menu. They are written to explain the old photo featured above this section in today’s article. The original of this photo hangs proudly with other family mementos at Sammy’s Place.

Here are Sammy’s words:

“In 1938, my father, L.L. Patrenella, built this house in which you can now enjoy the food and hospitality of our family. After immigrating to Houston from his native Sicily, he started a grocery store in this neighborhood; it stood a mere block away. He and my mother, Nita, live behind the store. They were always cooking Italian recipes and giving samples away to the customers. I’ve always had a dream for a restaurant that would carry on the traditional good tastes and love of my mother and father. So, my wife, Josephine, my son, my daughters and I have uniquely renovated this house in which I was raised. We have kept it consistently dedicated to the ambiance of the historic Heights and Sixth Ward. The warmth and the great cuisine of the traditional Italian kitchen is presented to you by three generations of the Patrenella family. Please come by and enjoy.” – Sammy Patrenella.

Sammy's childhood home and two others have been linked since 1991 as the site of Patrenella's Ristorante Italiano. Safe parking is no problem in this gentle old Houston neighborhood.

When three-year old Sammy and his family first moved into their new house at 813 Jackson Hill in 1938, a Houston Chronicle human interest spotlight story described the new family home as “modern throughout.” Sammy says he later asked his mom what that meant. She told him, “Of course, it was modern throughout. The house even had an ironing board built straight into the wall.”

Thank you, Mama Petronella! We doubt that many women from the year 2010 equally share your enthusiasm for such conveniences as built-in ironing boards.

"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore!"

A friend recruited this robotic version of a famous entertainer as a gift to Sammy Patrenella a few years ago. Dino has held forth as the host of Sammy’s bar area ever since his arrival from New Orleans. The joy of life and the spirit of giving oozes from the walls of this happy place in ways large and small. This little Dean Martin “Mini-Me” simply fell into the mood of the place.

Sammy Patrenella (L) and Houston consigliere Richard Coselli.

The smile on Sammy’s face is as big as his heart. The smile you are receiving here from our last featured photo of Sammy greeting his luncheon guest and lifelong friend and fellow St. Thomas High School graduate Richard Coselli reaches out as an invitation for you to stop by sometime and also partake of the joy that is dining at Patrenella’s.

Let me put it this way: The Goombahs above are making you a dinner offer that they each hope you will not refuse. Life’s too short to miss out on the joy of this world’s best food and greatest company.

Have a terrific Friday, everybody!
