Ed's Epistle.......Happy Dino Thanksgiving

Hey pallies, likes 'nother day of givin' Dino-thanks has come our way. When I pondered what to share in honor of our Dino, I just knew that I couldn't sez it better then our amazin' Dino-prosin' pallie Ed who wrote last years Dino-thankin' Dino-trib...so here are Ed's outstandin' Dino-thoughts on this day of givin' thanks.

So pallies, sits back and relish each and every one of our Dino-phile Ed's Dino-reflections 'cause they are laden with the deepest of the deep, the purest of the pure, the truest of the true Dino-truths.

It's 'bout 15 long years since our Dino walked the earth, but his life and legacy continues to entrall and call all us pallies to know, love, and honor our great man more and more each and every Dino-day.

Thanks Ed for sharin' your Dino-thanks with us in such a cool Dino-way. Thanks most of all to our Dino...truly we wanna know you, love you, and honor more each and every Dino-day! Dino-gratefully, DMP

Location? On a stage somewhere, Anytown USA.

Time? When Dino roamed and owned the earth.

Dino: “You know why they call it Plymouth Rock? Those pilgrims backed up their Plymouth into that rock. That’s why they call it Plymouth Rock.”

True Story.
It was Dino that quickly pointed out that America was discovered by a fellow Italian, Amerigo Vespucci. In turn, it was America who discovered Martin, Sinatra, Como, Martino, Bennett, Vale, Laine, Darin, Damone, and Prima. All Italian-American singers who forever changed the American music landscape. Imagine a world without Dean Martin. Elvis has no direction. Sinatra hasn’t a Yin to Yang, and good luck with reviving the Humphrey Bogart-less Holmby Hills Rat Pack. Joey Levitch is still Joey Levitch. Who’s Joey Levitch you ask? Welcome to a Dino-less world. Joey Levitch became Jerry Lewis. The word “cool” would have been forever associated with the weather. The Beatles would still be remembered as being “untouchable”.

Let’s be selfish for a bit. Without Dino, we don’t have see our fathers settling down in his favorite chair smoking his favorite pipe, spinning his favorite Dino LP. The man who makes my dad happy is the man that makes us happy. Pleasure hasn’t a salesman. Time passes and finds me sitting down in my favorite chair with my favorite beverage, listening to my favorite Dino iPod playlist. Coincidence? Think not my fellow Dino-phile. Dino transcends generations, countries, languages, races, sexes. He touches all! Cool has no color. Cool is ageless. You’re only as far from cool as the nearest Dino LP, CD, book, what have you. If you can’t find cool, pick up a Dino LP, look at it. It’s your cool compass, it always points to cool. Without it you’re never lost pally!

The things in life to be thankful for? Dino said it best..
Tender kisses, nights of bliss. Small moonbeams, sips of wine. Wedding bells, little kids, and dreams to savor. Blessings, man, wife, love and life. Memories are made of this.

Be thankful for those who brought them to you. Return the favor, help make others lives more memorable.

Happy Thanksgiving Pallies!
Ed

"Even though Fabian was popular, Dean shows the kid how its done."

Hey pallies, likes Thanksgivin' approacheth and likes with each passin' day I am more and more thankful for our Dino and for pallies who keeps spreadin' the Dino-word here on the 'net.

Today's Dino-gram originates at our pallie Mr. David Lobosco's pad "Great Entertainers Archives" and features a vid that likes I never ever knew even existed. It musta be from one of our Dino's early television specials 'cause it is in glorious black and white and features our great man and the teen idol Fabian doin' the tune "I Love The Love."

Likes gotta 'fess up likies I loves the banter back and forth between our great man and Fabian....likes our Dino doesn't want the kid touchin' any of the bevy of chicks and likes when Fab tries our Dino sez, Hold it, hold it, hold it...fold your arms...don't touch nothin'." It's a real scream pallies!

And that is just the beginnin' of the interaction between our Dino and this young teen idol....so loves that our Dino always puts his whole self into each and every song that he sings....makin' it much more of a Dino-experience then simply a singer croonin' a tune.

Watch our Dino makin' it with chicks while Fabian doesn't get a chance to gets anythin' under our Dino's ever watchful glance....

Thanks to our pallie David for puttin' this up at his pad (clicks on tagg of this here Dino-gram to likes goes there).....a real Dino-treat for sure and an outstandin' example of why pallies likes us are ever ever so so thankful for our DINO! Dino-delightedly, DMP

November 20, 1952 On This Day In Dino-history: Capitol Records Recordin' Sessions

Hey pallies, likes while our Dino was always ahead of his times, seems that this Dino-holic is constantly behind. Again, my deepest apologies for gettin' this post up a couple of days late, but did whats to gives all this cool Dino-info to all you dudes.

From our pallie Mark R. over at his coolest of the cool blogs, "popculturefanboy" comes the Dino-historical news that on November 20, 1952 our Dino recorded a ton of songs in just one Dino-day that woulda be mostly shared with the Dino-world through over great man's first LP al-b-um offerin' for Capitol Records..."Dean Martin Sings."

We thanks our pallie Mark R. for sharin' this important Dino-info and likes to see this in it's original form, just clicks on the tagg of this Dino-gram. Dino-lovin'ly, DMP

Sunday Serenade with Dino: "Carolina In The Morning"

Hey pallies, likes this week's Dino-serenade is comin' ats you a wee bit early 'cause I ain't certain that I'll be 'round these Dino-parts tomorrow and didn't want to have 'nother week goes by with our serenadin' you with a classic Dino-croon!

'Nothin' could be finer then listenin' to our Dino smoothly croonin' a southern melody. Likes thoughts it would make perfect Dino-sense to feature a south of the Mason-Dixon line Dino-classic for this weeks Dino-serenade since we just put the accent on a post featurin' our Dino's al-b-um "Swingin' Down Under."

What our Dino led me to is this very classy black and white live clip of our Dino singin' "Carolina In The Morning" supported by the Dick Stabiles Orchestra.

While our Dino is renowned for singin' Italiano amore, he does an amazin' job with this Dixieland standard....indeed our Dino is pure Italian stallion, but his laid-back easy goin' style makes him perfect as the charmin' southern gentleman of amore as well. Our Dino's drawl lends itself perfectly to "Down Under" tunes likes "Carolina."

Watch as our Dino nuances each and every phrase of "Carolina"...and loves, loves, loves pallies how our Dino hugs the microphone as if it was his dancin' partner.

So enjoys our Dino singin' him some south...just goes to again show that everythin' our Dino does, he does with his own uniquely warm and intimate style...and to likes, of course, Dino-perfection! Dino-swingin', DMP

"Carolina In The Morning"

Walter Donaldson - Gus Kahn

Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning
No one could be sweeter than my sweetie when I meet her in the morning
Where the morning glories twine around the door
Whispering pretty stories I long to hear once more
Strolling with my girlie where the dew is pearly early in the morning
Butterflies all flutter up and kiss each buttercup at dawning
If I had Aladdin's lamp for only a day
I'd make a wish and here's what I'd say
Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning.

Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the AM
Carolina in the morning.

Dean Martin - Swingin’ Down Yonder

Hey pallies, likes every Dino-day I loves to proclaim the Dino-message of cool here at ilovedinomartin and likes I gets so delighted when our Dino leads me to 'nother dude who is proclaimin' Dino-cool as well. Today's Dino-gram originates from a pad tagged "Notice Of Meowery" and the pen of Mr. John A. McKeon.

Mr. McKeon, who obviously loves our Dino, shares his review of our great man's amore to music south of the Mason-Dixon line. John hates the cover, but loves the Dino-tunes. And, likes I gotta agrees with our pallie on both points. As McKeon sez, the cover "makes Dean Martin look like a douche, and in real life he never looked that goofy." John is 100% correct, our King of Cool woulda never look goofy in real life. As McKeon ponders, likes it woulda be very interestin' to know the history of this cover.

When it comes to the music, as our pallies pontificates, "the guy absolutely nails it." And, of course our Dino does....no matter what sorta tune he croons, our Dino always "nails it" in true Dino-perfection.

Likes pallies, it is always so excitin' to experience more Dino-love on the 'net and certainly John McKeon review of "Swingin' Down Under" exudes true, pure, and deep Dino-devotion. So, ilovdinomartin sez our thanks to Mr. John McKeon for openly and unabashedly speakin' the Dino-truth and helpin' his readers to know more 'bout the pleasures of Dino.

To view this at John's pad, likes just clicks on the tag of this Dino-post, and likes John man, if likes you reads this dude, likes what's the tagg of your pad "Notice of Meowery" all 'bout man? with Dino-deep Dino-appreciato, DMP

Dean Martin - Swingin’ Down Yonder
November 19th, 2010 | Albums, Reviews

First thing’s first here: this cover sucks. I seriously think it might be one of the worst album covers ever made, mainly because it makes Dean Martin look like a douche, and in real life he never looked that goofy. They’ve got him dressed up in some lame outfit and on top of it whoever created this is making look like he’s dancing a jig. It’s just horrible. I keep wondering if Dean had to sign off on this cover or if it was just something the record company pushed through. The thing is I’m convinced that if they had used a photograph instead of a drawing he could have pulled it off. Don’t believe me? Check out how cool the guy looks for his country album:

Okay so enough about the cover. The concept of Swingin’ Down Yonder is that Dean is doing songs associated with the American south. It’s such a bizarre release from someone associated with Italian love songs, but the guy absolutely nails it. The songs are lighthearted without being silly and it doesn’t contain a single moment where you roll your eyes in embarassment. The music is created by traditional instruments instead of Dino’s usual orchestral music and his voice blends with it perfectly. The only complaint I have is with the bonus tracks included on the re-release that I have; they don’t fit in with the concept and it’s a little jarring when they start, but really that’s a small quibble.

There are a lot of good Dean Martin albums but I would rank this among my top two or three studio albums. Despite the terrible cover and the odd concept this is a great display of his talent.

Our Dino and Dino Jr. in "Murders' Row"

Hey pallies, likes in honor of the day of birth of Dino Jr. on November 17th, likes just has to post my fav of fav Dino-scene from my fav of fav Dino-flicks, "Murders' Row."

It that clip when our Dino as Matt Helm is makin' the discotheque scene with Suzie Solaris and as they are fruggin' Suzie (Miss Ann Margret" backs our Dino up to his boypallie Dino Jr. singin' "If You're Thinkin' What I'm Thinkin'" with his band, "Dino, Desi, and Billy."

When Dino Jr. sees his daddy-o he quips, "Now you're swingin' dad." To which our Dino replies, "Dad?" Well Suzie sez, "He calls everybody dad." And, Dino replies, "Don't he know?" And Suzie sez, "It's a wise son who knows his own father." And Dino ends it by quippin', "The way they are wearin' their hair now adays, it's a wise father who knows his own son."

This is the one and only scene that our Dino and Dino Jr. share in a flick...and likes it is so so very cool seenin' our King of Cool and the heir apparent to our Dino's throne makin' such groovy patter together...it certainly was a precursor of things hoped to come between the Martin boys, but alas it was not to be.

Here is the whole clip, but to catch the Dino-action between father and son, goes to 'bout 3:05 in the action. Dino-honorin', DMP

November 17, 1951 On This Day In Dino-history..Dino Martin Jr. Born

Hey pallies, likes so sorry to be late with this important Dino-date in Dino-history. Just read at the pad "Rock Roots" (clicks on tagg of this Dino-gram to goes there) that yesterday was the 59th anniversary of our Dino's beloved boypallie Dino Jr.'s birthday.

Likes we all knows that Dino Jr.'s amazin' life was cut short by that fatal plane crash at age 35 and likes how our Dino never ever recovered from his beloved Dino Jr.'s death. ilovedinomartin sends our love to family Martin and Dino-devotees everywhere as we remember the birth of Dino Jr., the apple of our Dino's eye, the heir apparent to the Dino-throne of Cool. Dino-rememberin', DMP

On this date in 1951, American Singer, Dean Paul Martin, son of Dean Martin, and a member of the band Dino, Desi & Billy was born.

The Dean Martin - John Boehner Connection

Hey pallies, likes dudes likes all I can say is WOW! Our newest Dino-addicted pallie Attorney Tory Fodder, whose amore to our Dino in the form of his insightful "Pax Plena" song review of "An Evening In Roma" was published yester-Dino-day here at ilovedinomartin has just posted more Dino-devotion in his Dino-perspective, "The Dean Martin - John Boehner Connection."

Seems that our man Tory upon his discovery of ilovedinomartin was smitten with a recent Dino-post here at ilovedinomartin speakin' of Boehner bein' known as the "Dean Martin of politics."

Well, as you knows pallies, ilovedinomartin tries very hard to stay non-politico likes our Dino mostly was, but likes gotta shares with you pallie Tory's Dino-prose.

Here are some more of Tory's amazin' Dino-praise...

"Notwithstanding the fact that I am a Republican and the fact that Speaker Boehner is, indeed, pretty cool, comparing an individual to the standard of cool set by Dean Martin is a serious compliment – certainly not one to be taken lightly. A penchant for slick suits and cigarettes simply is not enough. Like the CIA looking for weapons of mass destruction, we require further proof."

"While comparisons alone are insufficient to bespeak a ‘coolness connection’, I think that Dino Martin would approve of merlot over Slurpees. And he certainly would approve of a good party. After all, if we can say anything at all about Dean Martin, it’s pretty clear the man loved life."

Truly, truly pallies, our new Dino-holic pallie Tory obviously has that deep, pure, and true Dino-devotion that makes him one sold-out-to-Dino dude!

And, likes ilovedinomartin so so very very Dino-much appreciates Mr. Fodder's kind Dino-nod to ilovedinomartin that he shares at the end of his Dino-reflections here. Thanks Tory for helpin' spread your Dino-affection through your Dino-grams at "Pax Plena" and leadin' your readers to our ilovedinomartin Dino-conclave.

To view Tory's stellar Dino-thoughts at his pad, "Pax Plena," and to follow his links, just clicks on the tagg of this Dino-gram. Dino-psyched, DMP

The Dean Martin - John Boehner Connection

Much ink has been spilt about the new Republican Congressional Majority. But perhaps readers are unaware of the comparisons being floated between incoming House Speaker John Boehner and the erstwhile King of Cool himself, Dean Martin.

To wit, no less than three press shops have made the comparison – one as long ago as 2006:

Easygoing and well liked, with a perpetual tan, a low golf handicap and an ever-present Barclay cigarette between his fingers, Mr. Boehner, 56, looks like a throwback to the 1950's — Dean Martin comes to Congress. But he is known around the House as a serious legislator, a pro-business lawmaker who is one of the few senior Republicans who can work with Democrats.

[Link]

Building on the NYT’s motif, AOL’s Politics Daily recently mused, “Who Is John Boehner: Dean Martin? Don Draper? Or the Next Newt Gingrich?” While U.S. News’s Washington Whispers delivered the most glowing comparison of all:

Like a character out of Mad Men, likely incoming House Speaker John Boehner is about to bring old-school cool and political wrangling back into fashion. "He's so cool, every man should hate him," says Tea Party organizer Dick Armey, who calls Boehner the "Dean Martin of politics."

[Link]

Notwithstanding the fact that I am a Republican and the fact that Speaker Boehner is, indeed, pretty cool, comparing an individual to the standard of cool set by Dean Martin is a serious compliment – certainly not one to be taken lightly. A penchant for slick suits and cigarettes simply is not enough. Like the CIA looking for weapons of mass destruction, we require further proof.

The most instructive analysis on this score comes from the Daily Beast’s post-election article describing the new Speaker’s fondness for hooch. Two quotes are on point:

When President Obama suggested a “Slurpee Summit” with Boehner and his colleagues this week, the likely Speaker came back with a counterproposal.

“I don’t know about a Slurpee,” he told ABC’s Diane Sawyer. “How about a glass of Merlot?”

[And here:]

"You have a good party and people tend to show up for the next one,” Boehner once told The Hill. “You'd better make sure the first one's a good one.”

[Link]

While comparisons alone are insufficient to bespeak a ‘coolness connection’, I think that Dino Martin would approve of merlot over Slurpees. And he certainly would approve of a good party. After all, if we can say anything at all about Dean Martin, it’s pretty clear the man loved life.

So, as a final verdict, we’ll let the comparison stand for now– at least until Speaker Boehner does something to require a rescission. As with Dino, It’s hard to call the man set to put the party back in GOP anything but cool.

Special Thanks!

By the by, special thanks to Dean Martin aficionado “Dino Martin Peters” for calling the US News piece to my attention. DMP has a terrific site discussing all things Dean Martin since 2007. His slice of the web can be accessed at http://ilovedinomartin.blogspot.com/ .

As a special note, last week’s “Song of the Week: On an Evening in Roma” was featured recently on DMP’s site. It’s a great privilege for us here at Pax Plena to connect with the broader community of Dean Martin fans on the web. Thanks a ton!

"In some ways, there is only so much that the written word will do to describe the ability of Dean Martin."

Hey pallies, likes his tagg is Tory Fodder, and he describes himself as a "recovering law student." Tory is master of "Pax Plena 'Cause Life's Too Short To Drink Cheap Wine." Likes based on today's Dino-post Tory is one sold-out Dino-devotee. Diggs these Dino-ponderin's of Tory's on his Dino-reflection, "Song of the Week: On an Evening in Roma"......

"I've never been to Rome. But after listening to Dean Martin's On An Evening in Roma I sometimes feel as if I have."

"Though the world was surely going through trying times, Dean Martin’s easy singing style helped the world forget."

"But what makes the song a classic is its singer. Martin, perhaps more than any crooner of his era, masterfully uses his voice to tell a story."

"But above all, it is Martin’s warbling voice, explaining the mysterious, arbitrary role of the espresso in the grander scheme of love that makes the song ‘perfetto’."

"Dino flat makes Rome come alive."

"In some ways, there is only so much that the written word will do to describe the ability of Dean Martin."

It clear that Mr. Tory Fodder "gets Martin" and is unashamed to share his Dino-passion with his pallies. It's so so refreshin' to keeps findin' more and more of today's youth...hip and with it swingin' professionals like Tory Fodder keepin' the Dino-light glowin' Dino-bright.

Song of the Week: On an Evening in Roma

I've never been to Rome. But after listening to Dean Martin's On An Evening in Roma I sometimes feel as if I have.

When the Pax Plena Song of the Week, On An Evening in Roma, was released in 1959, Fidel Castro had just assumed power in Cuba, the Barbie Doll made its debut, and the Dali Lama made his initial flee from Tibet. Though the world was surely going through trying times, Dean Martin’s easy singing style helped the world forget. By the time On An Evening in Roma was released, Martin had already been on the American music scene for more than ten years. In that span, he released the much heralded That’s Amore, and the eventual No. 1 hit Memories Are Made of This.

By contrast, On An Evening in Roma never even cracked the top 50 songs on the American charts and fared even worse over seas.

But what makes the song a classic is its singer. Martin, perhaps more than any crooner of his era, masterfully uses his voice to tell a story. The music proceeds languidly, as the faux Italian sound dictates that it should, while listeners detect a hint of mischief as Dino describes the couples of Rome wandering off. But above all, it is Martin’s warbling voice, explaining the mysterious, arbitrary role of the espresso in the grander scheme of love that makes the song ‘perfetto’.

The song has seen a bit of a resurgence of late, appearing on soundtracks in a number of movies, some related to Rome, and others not. I suspect this is attributable to both Martin and the song’s lyrics. What Dean Martin does that other versions of the song do not is use his low-tenor voice to playfully describe the scene listeners hear – from Rome’s street lamps, to its starry skies. Dino flat makes Rome come alive. And everyone loves a good love story, right?

In some ways, there is only so much that the written word will do to describe the ability of Dean Martin. Without further delay, please enjoy the Pax Plena song of the week, On An Evening Roma, as performed by the legendary Dean Martin.

On An Evening In Roma Lyrics

by Dean Martin

Como e' bella ce' la luna brille e' strette
strette como e' tutta bella a passeggiare
Sotto il cielo di Roma

Down each avenue or via, street or strata
You can see 'em disappearing two by two
On an evening in Roma

Do they take 'em for espresso
Yeah, I guess so
On each lover's arm a girl I wish I knew
On an evning in Roma

Though there's grining and mandolining in sunny Italy
The beginning has just begun when the sun goes down

So please meet me in the plaza near your casa
I am only one and one is much too few
On an evening in Roma

Don't know what the country's coming to
But in Rome do as the Romans do
Will you on an evening in Roma

Como e' bella ce' la luna brille e' strette
strette como e' tutta bella a passeggiare
Sotto il cielo di Roma

Don't know what the country's coming to
But in Rome do as the Romans do
Will you on an evening in Roma

Sott'er celo de Roma
On an evening in Roma

"I remember one particular Friday evening when I was down the street in the vacant lot where we kids used to play baseball, football and other assorted games. My friends and I were in the very late innings of a tight baseball game. All of a sudden I remembered what night it was and yelled out “What time is it?” My friend Dean (who was actually named after Dean Martin – I swear it!) answered “It’s ten to nine.” “Oh my God,” I replied. “I gotta go. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I ran home with their angry cries of disbelief echoing in my ears. I ran into the house, up the stairs, took the fastest shower in history and was downstairs in front of the television just as the picture of the MGM Grand flashed up on the tiny screen."

5 Big Changes John Boehner Brings to Speakership
By Paul Bedard

Posted: November 9, 2010

Like a character out of Mad Men, likely incoming House Speaker John Boehner is about to bring old-school cool and political wrangling back into fashion. "He's so cool, every man should hate him," says Tea Party organizer Dick Armey, who calls Boehner the "Dean Martin of politics."

When, as expected, House Republicans elect him to be speaker of the next Congress, Boehner will usher in stylistic and procedural changes. We quizzed his posse about what the biggest switches from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be and this is their top five list:

1. He promises to be less authoritarian. He will relegate more power.

2. Boehner will allow the other side to meddle more than before. He likes legislators.

3. Smokers will be welcome again. He will not give up his cigarettes.

4. More tears. Boehner is a big, and easy, crier.

5. Golf tees will replace Nancy Pelosi's chocolates in the office bowl. He gets his tan from golfing.

40 Years of "Airport": "Airport" (1970)

Hey pallies, likes while it is 50 years ago this year that "Ocean 11" hit the big screen, it is also 40 years ago that the epic Dino-classic "Airport" was released. As you pallies will remember, our beloved Dino was paid likes 7 cool mil to star in the film version of Arthur Hailey's mega-popular novel.

From the pages of IFC News, from the pen of Mr. Matt Singer comes a solid remembrance of the mother of the modern disaster flick. Loves the pix of our Dino as Captain Vern and stew Gwen that they have chosen to feature.

Been wonderin' for quite the Dino-while pallies why this was truly the last major flick that our Dino starred in (at least that I can recall). After makin' 7 cool mil by bein' star of this gigantic screen adaptation of Hailey's best seller...our great man have fewer and much less significant roles...just haves to wonder what happened pallies...and likes to any of you dudes have likes any clues to this Dino-mystery?

So enjoys takin' a trip down Dino-memory-lane as IFC honors the 40th anniversary of "Airport." ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to Mr. Singer for creatin' this prose and to IFC News for publishin' it. Also ilovedinomartin thanks our outstandin' Dino-holic pallie Danny G. who likes puts us on this article. 40 Years of "Airport": "Airport" (1970)

Brace for impact: part one of our weeklong look back at an important but forgotten disaster movie franchise.

Posted 11/08/2010 1100 AM by Matt Singer 40 Years of "Airport": "Airport" (1970)

Photos: "Airport," Universal, 1970

In 1970, one movie invented the modern disaster film. After grossing more than $100 million at the domestic box office (adjusted for inflation, it made more than any of the "Lord of the Rings"), it spawned three sequels that stretched through the entire decade. But this landmark series is now almost totally forgotten, long eclipsed by the film that so brilliantly spoofed the genre tropes it helped define. In honor of its fortieth anniversary, we're looking back at the "Airport" franchise this week, one film at a time. Today, the movie that started it all, based on the novel by Arthur Hailey.

Airport (1970)
Directed by George Seaton

Nature of Air Emergency: A distraught man detonates a crude suicide bomb on a commercial jet in the hopes that his wife will collect his life insurance. Captain Vern Demerest (Dean Martin) has to land the damaged plan in the middle of a brutal Chicago snowstorm at an airport where the main runway is closed.

George Kennedy Plays: Joe Patroni, Chief Mechanic of Trans Global Airlines.

Most Surprising Subplot: Flight attendant Gwen's (Jacqueline Bisset) unwanted and out-of-wedlock pregnancy, which prompts a weirdly frank discussion about abortion between Bisset and Martin. "I stopped taking the pills because they were making me gain weight," she tells him. "So instead of being plump I'm pregnant." His response: "I'll make sure you don't go to some butcher two flights up over a drug store. I hear Sweden's the best place. Good doctors, good hospitals. Medically safe." Call me naive, but I wasn't prepared for the silly disaster picture about the plane that gets blown up and still lands safely to set aside a few minutes for a sincerely moving conversation about family planning. Go ahead. Call me naive.

If "Airport" Were Made Today: it would be hard to play Helen Hayes' stowaway character as the comic relief. Mrs. Ada Quonsett is a widow who hitches rides on airplanes whenever she feels like it. Everything she does is illegal and immoral, but she's a little old lady and she's having a lot of fun being bad; even after she's caught, she still tries to talk her way into the admiral's club with a "borrowed" membership card. In 1970, people sneaking onto airplanes with forged documents could be kind of charming (talk about being naive). In 2010, people sneaking on airplanes with forged documents, even little old lady types, not so charming.

Character You Kind of Want To Die: This one random passenger who keeps screwing things up for everyone else. When the flight crew get wind of the bomber's plan, they hatch an elaborate scheme to grab his explosives, hidden in a briefcase, away from him. The plan works, until this one random guy sees what's happening and sticks his nose in where it doesn't belong; he stops the flight attendant with the case, and the bomber is able to grab it back. Then a few minutes later, just as Dean Martin is about to convince him not to blow himself up, a man comes out of the bathroom and bumps into the bomber, and the same random douchebag screams out "He's got a bomb!" That starts a scuffle that results in the bomb going off. That one idiot is indirectly responsible for everything that goes wrong on that airplane! Is it weird that I kind of enjoyed watching him struggle for air when the cabin depressurized? Also: how intense does a trip to the bathroom have to be to not hear a guy threatening to blow up an airplane right outside the door?

Line That Makes You Wonder Whether The Whole Film Was An Informercial For The Air Travel Industry: "Remind me to send a thank you note to Mr. Boeing." -- Capt. Harris (Barry Nelson), inspecting the damaged plane after its safe landing.

Parodied in "Airplane!": The opening credits of "Airplane!" are an obvious parody of "Jaws": a model 747 tail fin snakes through lines of clouds while ominous John Williams-esque music plays. You assume the model looks so cheap because the Zuckers couldn't afford anything fancier until you watch some of the flying sequences in "Airport," which actually tries to pass off an incredibly phony toy plane skimming through cotton balls as a real plane in flight.

How Does It Hold Up? Better than I expected. "Airport" may have helped invent the modern disaster movie, but it's a lot less over-the-top than many of the films that would follow (I'm looking at you, movie about Michael Caine fighting millions of angry bees). Most of the movie isn't even about the airplane disaster; it really does focus on this airport and the tough decisions that have to be made by its manager, Mel Bakersfeld (Burt Lancaster). Even amidst all the movie stars and the big action set pieces, the movie has a nice working-class vibe. While Martin's romancing Bisset, Lancaster and Kennedy are doing the unglamorous stuff: dealing with corporate bureaucracy, fielding complaints from angry customers, and digging planes out of snow banks, all on their nights off. For the people in the sky, air travel is exotic and exciting. Even though their flight gets attacked, it's all this grand adventure that works out in the end. For the people on the ground, it's just a job, and a pretty crappy one at that; it destroys at least one marriage before the picture's over. I guess the powers that be at Universal felt that the movie stars and big action set pieces were what put asses in the seats, not the promise of tough management decisions. That would have a major impact on the tone and plot of the sequels.

Strange But True: According to Wikipedia, the plane that Universal leased to double for the damaged Trans Global jet was later sold to a Brazilian airline. On March 21, 1989, it was involved a real-life air disaster resulting in over twenty-five fatalities. Creepy.

The Film

When it came to cool and hip the “Rat Pack,” that is to say, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop had it in spades. So, it’s no wonder then that this 1960 film, Ocean’s 11, starring the fun loving, hard partying group also oozes an abundance of cool and style that its 2001 remake with George Clooney et al can barely muster.

It’s New Year’s Eve and Danny Ocean (Sinatra) has gathered together a group of his old army buddies to pull off the most outrageous heist ever, a robbery of all the Vegas strip’s casino vaults simultaneously at the stroke of midnight. The plan is to knock out the power to the Vegas strip, rig the vaults and raid them, making off with the loot.

The gang’s all here for this stylish heist, filmed on location in Las Vegas and powered by some swinging big band tunes, a sexy performance by Angie Dickinson, and the trademark off-kilter humor of the Rat Pack. For a look at these true originals at play (and a little bit of work too) you have to check out this original version of Ocean’s 11.

Video Quality

The 2.35:1 1080p/24 VC-1 encoding of the 1960 film looks above average for a catalogue release, but not spectacular. There is still a lot of noticeable source damage in the image and the overall detail level is a bit soft, but there is a layer of grain remaining in the image that keeps it looking film-like and no noticeable processing artifacts get in the way.

Audio Quality

Audio consists of a simple DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0 mix of the original soundtrack. Dialogue is clear, but there are still some noticeable limitations of the day audible. Apart from that, the sound is what you’d expect from a monaural mix from 1960. Kudos should go to Warner for providing the original mix, however.

Supplemental Materials

Rat Pack fans should get a kick out of the old Tonight Show with Johnny Carson footage with Frank Sinatra hosting and Angie Dickinson as his guest as well as the audio commentary by Frank Sinatra, Jr. and Angie Dickinson and the interactive Las Vegas Map that allows access to clips telling of the halcyon days of the Las Vegas strip.

The supplements provided with this release are:

Commentary by Frank Sinatra, Jr. & Angie Dickinson
The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson Featuring Guest Host Frank Sinatra (1.33:1; 480i/60; 0:03.45) — Frank Sinatra interviews Angie Dickinson as guest host of The Tonight Show.
Tropicana Museum Vignette (1.33:1; 480i/60; 0:01.40)
Vegas Map
Theatrical Trailer #1 (2.35:1; 480i/60)
Theatrical Trailer #2 (1.78:1; 480i/60)
The Definitive Word

Overall:

Warner finally brings the original Ocean’s 11 film to Blu-ray in a solid release with some classic supplementary footage that Sinatra fans are sure to love. The 2001 remake can’t touch this version in its easy style and laid-back humor. Recommended.

As our Dino sings "How lucky can one guy be"...likes you just knows that there never ever has been anyone as lucky as our Dino...but, certainly our Dino's fame and fortune is much more centered on his amazin' giftedness then simply luck.

It's not just our Dino's talented singin' voice, it's also 'bout the amazin' irrestible looks he gives as he sings...makin' you believe every single syllable that he croons...indeed his prediction that "my life is gonna be beau-ti-ful" is more then a phrase to a classic song of amore. No one, and likes I mean no one lives a more enchantin'ly 'beau-ti-ful' life then our Dino!!!!!

So pallies, sits back and enjoys our beloved Dino singin' his 'beau-ti-ful' version of "Ain't That A Kick In The Head" from the stellar pack of rats flick "Oceans 11."

Anywho, any as always, glad to see the name of our Dino lifted up and to have Stu's reflections helpin' to introduce others to our beloved Dino.

The thoughts shared by Mr. Cummins are pretty standard Dino-fare, but did note that accordin' to Stu, our Dino and the Jer's greatest moment is a scene of the jer boxin' in the flick "Sailor Beware." Any comments from all you dudes 'bout this? Just wonderin' what you would name as the greatest moment for our Dino and the kid?

06. Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis

The most successful comic duo of the 1950s had their fingers in many pies! As well as their making 17 films together, the pair also worked on radio, television and on stage at nightclubs. Originally hired by Hal Wallis as the comic relief in My Friend Irma (1949), the pair were signed to a lucrative contract with Paramount. Over the next 7 years, the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis churned out hit movie after hit movie.

Despite this commercial success, the duo’s partnership become increasingly sour, as Martin became disillusioned with playing the straight-laced character within their films. As the critics began to focus on Lewis as the real success within the act, arguments began to flare between the actors. Martin finally saw red in the late 50s and reportedly told Lewis that he meant little more than a dollar sign to him. With the release of Hollywood or Bust in 1956, the pair finally parted ways.

Both found individual success after the split and Martin finally achieved his time to shine, both as an actor and a singer, plus a member of Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack. Lewis continued to use his comedic talent in such films as The Bellboy (1960) and The Nutty Professor (1963), but his popularity began to wane by the early 1970s. Leaving the past behind them, the pair managed to put aside their differences and privately reconcile during this decade. The public got a chance to see this reconciliation for themselves in 1976, when Martin featured as a surprise special guest on Lewis’s Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Greatest Moment?:

Lewis’s boxing match in Sailor Beware (1951)…

Hey pallies, likes today's post comes with a swingin' Brit pad tagged "The Official Nightclub Directory." Our Dino and Dom certainly have great chemistry workin' together makin' funny. In fact, if you listen carefully to Greg Garrison as this vid begins, we learn that our great man "really liked" and felt "very comfortable" with Dom. Thus Mr. DeLuise, accordin' to Greg, was more often a guest on the Dino-show then anyone else.

Underrated Movie #86: Kiss Me, Stupid

Hey pallies, likes gotta 'fess up somedays I likes just feel just more Dino-led then others. Today's post comes as a result of feelin' guided by our Dino to types into the google image search the terms Dean Martin and Kiss Me Stupid.

Likes as a result I found this stellar review of KMS at our pallie Matt Bird's amazin' blog "Cockeyed Caravan....underrated movies and other stories." Mr. Bird did an outstandin' review of Underrated flick "Artists and Models" earlier this year and somehow I failed to find this follow-up with "Kiss Me Stupid" that appeared 22 July 2010.

Mr. Bird certainly understands what's happenin' in this hugely underrated Dino-classic. Particularly loves how he speaks of our beloved Dino...

"Can we talk about how daring Dean Martin is here? To play any character this callous and depraved is brave, but to do it as himself— using his real nickname, doing his own act, name-checking his real friends, then demanding another character’s wife in tribute as if he were the bad guy in Braveheart?? This was one ego-less actor! He twists his persona into something so casually monstrous that it’s terrifying. You can’t get your jaw off the floor as you watch it.

Likes Bird certainly knows of where he Dino-speaks! ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to Mr. Matt Bird for featurin' our Dino in this way and helpin' so many many pallies to comin' to undertand and develop deep Dino-appreciato. Underrated Movie #86: Kiss Me, Stupid

Title: Kiss Me, Stupid
Year: 1964
Director: Billy Wilder
Writers: Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond, based on the play “L’Ora della Fantasia” by Anna Bonacci
Stars: Kim Novak, Dean Martin, Ray Walston, Felicia Farr, Cliff Osmond

The Story: When the famous singer “Dino” passes through the tiny town of Climax, Nevada, two would-be songwriters decide to keep him there long enough to hear their work. At first, Walston is afraid that Dino will want to steal his wife, but they decide to hire the town hooker to pose as his wife, so that Dino can have his way with her. If you think it can’t get any more dirty-minded than that, you’d be very wrong.

How it Came to be Underrated: This is what career suicide looks like. Wilder (like Hitchcock and Michael Powell) spent the ‘50s pushing the boundaries of propriety, but gradually lost his audience when standards started to loosen faster than he could push them. This was Wilder’s attempt to get back out in front and obliterate the line entirely. Instead, it destroyed his reputation, which isn’t hard to understand. It’s great, but this material would have been too dirty for 1974, but less ten years earlier!

Why It’s Great:

Wilder wanted the songs the characters wrote to be awful, so he asked Ira Gershwin if he and his late brother George had ever written any songs they weren’t proud of. Ira handed over all their stinkers, like “I’m A Poached Egg”, and Wilder loved them. It’s just a shame that we never actually get to hear to the lyrics to “I’m Taking Mom to the Junior Prom Because She’s a Better Twister Than My Sister”

Can we talk about how daring Dean Martin is here? To play any character this callous and depraved is brave, but to do it as himself— using his real nickname, doing his own act, name-checking his real friends, then demanding another character’s wife in tribute as if he were the bad guy in Braveheart?? This was one ego-less actor! He twists his persona into something so casually monstrous that it’s terrifying. You can’t get your jaw off the floor as you watch it.

But this is Novak’s movie. She’s funny, sexy as heartbreaking, giving the movie a surprising amount of heart and soul. Her performance couldn’t be more different than her equally great work in Vertigo, even though the roles are bizarrely similar: In both movies, a man hires her to impersonate his wife and then seduce another man!

Peter Sellers was supposed to play Walston’s part, but he showed up on set and immediately had a heart attack. Walston does a great job in a rare leading role, but it’s hard not to imagine what could have been.
Felicia Farr had just married Jack Lemmon at the time and she now survives him after a long, happy marriage. She didn’t make a lot of movies, which is a shame, because she’s really wonderful here. Novak steals the show as the bawdy hooker with a heart of gold, but Farr arguably has the tougher job of being perfectly sweet and likable even after she turns out to be just as deliriously dirty-minded as the rest of them.

If You Like This, You Should Also Check Out: Like most of Wilder’s later movies, the biggest flaw here is that it’s overlong. But Wilder was just as funny as ever if you’re will to forgive the slack pacing. The two movies he made before this are similarly overlong but still underrated: Irma La Douce and One Two Three.

How Available Is It?: It’s on DVD, which has a lone special feature: a much cleaner ending. They don’t explain whether Wilder was forced to shoot it, then discarded it, or whether it was his idea in a moment of panic. For better or worse, he stuck to his guns.

Hey pallies, likes here in the land of Dino, we are havin' mid-term elections and likes I thoughts to myself, likes what coulda I does to honor our Dino on this particular Dino-day. But, likes I remembered that our beloved Dino did at one time play a role of a candidate for election. In 1961 in the outstandin' drama "Ada," our Dino played the role of good 'ol Southern guitar playin' boy Bo Gillas runnin' for governor of a state south of the Mason-Dixon line. It is so tragic that Ada has never ever been released on DVD (was it ever on VHS?).

But, likes through the magic of youtube, we dos have a stellar clip of our Dino on the campaignin' trail singin' "May The Lord Bless You Real Good" to a crowd of faithful supporters. Knows that I have posted this like several Dino-times before...but indeed, gotta 'fess up that I never tires of watchin' and listenin' to our Dino sing this great song...and dreamin' of what life woulda be like if our Dino was indeed a politico King....certainly woulda be the swingin'est Kingdom ever. Just thinks pallies, likes how cool the world woulda be if our Dino was King!

Well, anywho pallies, likes if you are residin' in Dino-land (USA), be sure to exercise your right to vote, and be sure to take a few to watch our great man singin' this great tune..."May The Lord Bless You Real Good. Never was, never will be anyone as cool as our King of Cool....oh, to return to the days when Dino walked the earth! Dino-devotedly, DMP
