Murderer's Row (1966)

Fox Classics (pay-TV), 8.35pm

In the mid-1960s, with the James Bond film franchise in full flight, producers around the globe battled to find the best way to cash in on the secret-agent boom. In England, Ralph Thomas tried with Dirk Bogarde in Hot Enough for June (1964). In America, James Coburn famously played Derek Flint in Our Man Flint (1966) and In Like Flint (1967). Dean Martin also picked up a gun and seduced the ladies in four Matt Helm films (1966-68). In the first, The Silencers (Fox Classics, today, midday), Matt thwarts the sinister Big-O organisation and flirts with Gail and Tina, played by major screen sirens Stella Stevens and Daliah Lavi. The film – a not-at-all meaningful spy spoof – was a hit and Murderer's Row followed months later. Evil Big-O is back and Matt again flirts with the leading ladies, this time played by Ann Margaret and Carmilla Sparv. Murderer's is beyond trivial, but sometimes fun, and Dean Martin is effortlessly charming. SM

Dean Martin - I Don't Know Why (I Just Do) with Miss Petula Clark

Dean Martin: Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime

Hey pallies, likes a few 'go on April 5th, ilovedinomartin shared a fun fun feature of our Dino and Miss Petula Clark horsin' 'round together duetin' on a variety of cool croons that youse can find HERE.  The pixs and vid shared in that particular post where taken from a Petula Clark small screen special simply tagged "Petula" that aired on ABC on the night of December 9, 1970.

Likes in readin' up on that swank special we learned that our most beloved Dino also crooned the tune "I Don't Know Why I Love You Like I Do" with Miss Pet playin' the piano for him.  Well we went to youtube to see what we could find, and indeed the vibrant vid shared below was the reward of our Dino-search.  There truly does seem to be a lotta love flowin' 'tween our Dino and Miss Clark in this noteworthy number.  And, likes this is one croon that our Dino sings a bit slower and with superb seriousness.

Also we did a litle more Dino-research and we discovered that both the duetin' moments and the solo below can be located on a Passport DVD tagged  "DEAN MARTIN: Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime"....(see image above).  Likes we thanks the youtube pallie "dino4ever" for makin' this magical moment in Dino-history available for Dino-holics everywhere to grooves on.

There is something unusually nice, safe and soothing by putting Dean Martin's Greatest Hits on the gramophone. Not only has the delicious crowned and mastered voice been a companion since my early childhood.....

Hey pallies, likes welcomes back for 'nother daily dose of deep devotion to our most most beloved Dino as found on the ol' world wide web.  Likes once 'gain this very Dino-day we have awesome adulation of our Dino of the incredibly international swank sort.....and this time 'round it is sweetly scribed by a Dino-devotee from the land of Denmark.  From the blog, "Vinylstakken - Tekster om musik - og plader. 350 plader hørt og beskrevet," which translates into English as "Vinyl Stack - Texts about music and plates. 350 plates heard and described" come the delightful Dino-appreciato tagged "Dean Martin: Greatest Hits! Vol 1 (1968)."

From the opennin' sentences of this Dino-prose we knows that we are readin' the Dino-reflections of a pallie who really grooves on our Dino and has been doin' so for almost their entire life!  Their potent perspective that "There is something unusually nice, safe and soothing by putting Dean Martin's Greatest Hits  on the gramophone." and..."the delicious crowned and mastered voice (has) been a companion since my early childhood.

Likes what coulda be cooler then readin' the wise words of someone who has known and loved our Dino since they were young....and to know that they hail from 'nother part of the Dino-universe?!?!?!
We are most incredibly intrigued by the remarkable reviewers thoughts..."The whole plate lays itself like silk over all walks of life in the relationship, discussions with the teenage children and generally all the evil of life."  We are certain this has lost somethin' in translation, but what we get as the gist of this is that each and every song on this awesome al-b-um contains tremendous teachin's of  our Dino that offers great guidance to pallies of all stages and ages in all walks of life...perhaps we could say the cool cool collection of these Dino-croons offer all us devotees a powerful primer on life Dino-style!

We express our deepest of deep delight to the unnamed blogger at "Vinyl Stack" for givin' this touchin' 'n tender testimonial of their life long amazin' appreciation of our most most beloved Dino and his life, times, and teachin's 'specially via his Greatest Hits! Vol 1!  To checks this out in it's original source, likes simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-report.

Dean Martin: Greatest Hits! Vol 1 (1968)

There is something unusually nice, safe and soothing by putting Dean Martin's Greatest Hits  on the gramophone. Not only has the delicious crowned and mastered voice been a companion since my early childhood, where among others "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometimes", "Houston", "Volare" and "The Birds And The Bees" were often heard on the steam radio at home, but Dean Martin could also be accessed via movie slapsticks with comedian-comrade Jerry Lewis and Westerns like Rio Bravo  - was sent, often on Sunday afternoon, to DR in monopoly days.

It is, of course, that Dean Martin, like Frank Sinatra, is to be found on the plate rack. However, only in a single copy, namely this collection from 1968, where Dean Martin was at the height of the career. And in fact, the smacky Italian-Americans are a bit of a 'guilty pleasure' in the home. The record has been played a lot of times. Both as subordination to cozy dinners, during cooking or when other parts of the household might mean that now it could be enough with all the modern music that was stress-inducing in all its avant-garde alarms.

And yes; much can be said, but Dean Martin and the fine selection of richly orchestrated classics in the refrain music of the early 1960s, which are found on the record, are definitely not alarmed. It is, as the Americans would say, perfectly "soothing, clean family entertainment you can trust." There are absolutely no edges, grates or splints you can hit or cut here. It's soft, nice, professionally executed and with beautiful choir, iron and horn arrangements, which gently wraps Dean Martin's laid back vocal. The whole plate lays itself like silk over all walks of life in the relationship, discussions with the teenage children and generally all the evil of life.

You can easily have a lot of opinions and there are very few music lovers under 40 who want to get an entire album with Dean Martin. In addition, it is enough for muzak-embossed and anachronistic. But when it is said, the collection of songs that accompanies this compilation is actually a sensible representation of what popular music consisted of from the mid-1950s and 10 years. It was probably the outbreak of rock'n'roll in the early edition, most often highlighted during this period, for example through artists such as Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and many more, but it was music by singers like Dean Martin, Tony Bennet and Frank Sinatra, who were listened to among the great consumers of music that kept themselves well on the middle ground.

And again; that isthat is, nice music within the right frame of this genre. It's insanely beautifully produced throughout, with big orchestras and great events that support it absolutely centrally; the nice melodies and Dean Martin's chick, crowning and smiling voice. If there is weltschmerz to find in the songs, you probably need to dig deeply, but "You're Nobody 'To Somebody Loves You", "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometimes", "The Birds And The Bees" And "In The Chapel In The Morning "may also be useful if the mood is up to it and you should not bump too much. Here is optimism, faith in the future, love and the only one, and here are the melodies and the voice to support it all.

It can be quite nice on a rainy day. The physical and the mental.

Dean Martin: Greatest Hits! Vol 1 (1968)

april 06, 2018

Martin is a revelation - damn fine actor.

Image result for Scott Grønmark
Hey pallies, likes more Dino-devotion of the incredible international sort comes our way 'gain this very Dino-day.  Our perfect pallies at Twingly Advanced Blog search recently sent us to a blog tagged "THE GRØNMARK BLOG, where Brit Mr. Scott Grønmark holds forth. Grønmark's bio tells us that he "is a retired broadcaster, writer, and online and interactive TV exec who lives in a pleasant part of West London with his wife and son. He was born in Norway and spent the first six years of his life there, mainly on Air Force bases. After his family moved to London he attended King's College School in Wimbledon, and then read Philosophy at Cambridge."

As you can see Mr. Grønmark has quite the cool credentials, so that we were totally totally thrilled that he recently scribed a review of the Dino-classic western, "Rio Bravo."  It's part of  his quartet flick review, "Four classic Hollywood movies: Holiday, The Enforcer, Rio Bravo and The Garden of Allah."

Likes Scott's perfect praise of our Dino in his excellent essay include these wise words...
"The one outstanding performance is Dean Martin's, as an alcoholic gunslinger...."
" Martin is a revelation - damn fine actor."  We gotta 'fess up that we never ever tire of readin' the raisin' of the praisin' of our most beloved Dino, and are totally totally touched to see a man of Mr.
Grønmark's supreme stature in the artistic community give our most beloved Dino such a ravin' review, which, of course, we are in absolute agreement with!

Four classic Hollywood movies: Holiday, The Enforcer, Rio Bravo and The Garden of Allah

Howard Hawks's Rio Bravo (1958) is yet another of those well-known films I thought I'd seen, but hadn't. As its title, and the fact that John Wayne, Walter Brennan and Ward Bond are all in it, would suggest, it's a western. Verywestern. It was apparently conceived as an antidote to High Noon, which many conservatives felt was unAmerican because of the way the cowardly townsfolk refused to help Gary Cooper.

The brother of a local rancher kills a man at the saloon, John Wayne throws the varmint in jail, and sends for help. While they wait, the rancher moseys into town with his gang and they start shootin' and killin' and generally not being very nice. As the sheriff tries to wait them out, he's joined by his deputy (Dean Martin), a young gunslinger (Ricky Nelson), a poker-playing gal called Feathers (a very young Angie Dickinson), and faithful, shotgun-totin' old-timer, Stumpy (Walter Brennan, spouting "authentic frontier gibberish", as Mel Brooks described it). Some of the other townsfolk pitch in on their side, including a semi-comic Mexican couple.

The film was rather dismissed by critics at the time, but has since attained classic status. I'm not sure it really deserves it. The one outstanding performance is Dean Martin's, as an alcoholic gunslinger: the trouble starts when he walks into the local saloon, skint, and Claude Akins offers him a dollar - then tosses it into a spittoon. The humiliated Dino sees red and attacks Akins, who then shoots a bystander who tries to intervene. Martin is a revelation - damn fine actor.

In this scene, a sobered-up Dean Martin and his boss look for a muddy-booted killer:

Ricky Nelson is another matter. Okay, he was only 19 when the film was made, but he'd been acting (and singing) on TV for five years - and yet, judging by his performance here, and despite being a teen idol and all, he's a pallid, charisma-free actor: every time he delivers a line, we don't listen to a word he's saying, because we're wondering how he manages to keep his pompadour in place, what with bathing and shampoo not being all that common in the Old West, and wearing a hat most of the time. Lordy, but he's a waste of space.

Angie Dickinson is presumably meant to be to The Duke what Lauren Bacall was to Bogie in To Have and Have Not - but the latter couple had genuine chemistry, and Bacall was old beyond her years: Angie Dickinson was 28 when Rio Bravo came out, but seems much younger - young enough to be Wayne's granddaughter. Wayne was only 52 - but could be 70: he's fat and stiff and slow and the slightest movement looks like a major effort. It's a shock to realise that it was only 20 years since he played the handsome, athletic Ringo Kid in Stagecoach: he evidently packed a lot of living into those two decades. His sheer presence is magnificent, true - but he's way too old for all that running around, and when he physically picks up Ms Dickinson (in order, presumably, to carry her upstairs for some slap and tickle) it strikes us as both unconvincing and a trifle sordid.

Then there's Dean and Ricky warbling their way through some songs. Really, chaps - leave that sort of filmic nonsense to Elvis. But mostly, what's wrong with the film is its 2hr 21mins length. Like Wayne himself, the whole film is badly in need of a corset: 100 minutes maximum, I reckon. Still  worth seeing, though.

Hey pallies, likes so so often we ask ourselves the Dino-quire... "to post or not to post?"  Sometimes it's 'bout whether the Dino-mention timely, or  ought we share it at 'nother time.  That is exactly the potent predicament that we find ourselves with this very Dino-day.  Likes yester-Dino-day we were deeply delighted to share Dino-adulation from drummer Mr. Hal Blaine at the new-to-ilovedinomartin marvelous music blog of Mr. Kent Kotal who holds forth at "FORGOTTEN HITS."

Likes we were coolly certain that there woulda be more Dino-gold to mine from Kotal's pad and it didn't take much lookin' to uncover it.  The problemo was, do we share this premier post now and on the anniversary of the particular Dino-event this remarkable reflection is 'bout.  Well, likes we answered our Dino-dilemma by sharin' it today as well as plannin' to report it later in this Dino-year as well!  This Dino-devotion is just to to swankly special not to share it with all youse Dino-holics ASAP!

The powerfully potent patter below is accented on one of the most amazin' events in the life, times, and the teachin's of our most most beloved Dino....that time in the year of our Dino 1964 when our main man knocked the Beatles off the charts with his numero uno croon, "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime."  Likes we knew by readin' Nick Tosches magnificent bio, "DINO: Living High In The Dirty Business Of Living,"  that our Dino had prophesied to his beloved boypallie Dino Martin Jr. that he woulda knock the Beatles off the charts, but before readin' this postin' we had not known that our most beloved Dino was proclaimin' his takeover of the numero uno slot to ALL.  To our Dino-notion, very very very cool Dino-indeed!

We can never ever gets 'nough of these beautiful bits of Dino-truth and we thanks Mr. Kent Kotal for creatin' this powerfully perfect post way back in 2009 that we could uncover and share with all youse Dino-devotees.  Thanks also to to Mr. Billy Hinsche (the Billy of Dino, Desi, and Billy) for his intriguin' insights at the end of this Dino-adulation.  We found some other marvelous material 'bout Dino, Desi, and Billy from our new pallie Mr. Kent Kotal that we will want to share at some point as well.  To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-report.

August 14, 1964
In the early Summer of 1964, Dean Martin was telling ANYONE who would listen that he had JUST recorded a song that would knock The Beatles out of the #1 Spot on the Charts.

Quite honestly, there was really no reason to believe him ... Martin hadn't had a #1 Record since 1956 when "Memories Are Made Of This" topped the charts ... and he hadn't even made The Top 40 since 1959 when "On An Evening In Roma" snuck in at #36.

But that's EXACTLY what "Everybody Loves Somebody" did ... it dethroned The Beatles' movie hit "A Hard Day's Night" and took over the top spot for a week in August of 1964. (Imagine his son Dino's surprise ... he admired The Beatles so much that he was inspired to start his OWN rock and roll band ... that's how Dino, Desi and Billy were born!!! Now his Dad had the biggest record in America!!! Talk about your mixed emotions!!!)

"Everybody Loves Somebody" was recorded (without much success or fanfare) by Martin's Rat Pack Buddy Frank Sinatra years earlier. In fact, Ken Lane, who co-wrote the song back in 1949 and went on to become a fixture on Martin's NBC Television Series as his musical arranger, says other artists like Dinah Washington and Peggy Lee ALSO took a crack at the song ... but NOBODY made it a hit until Dino did it ... and, in the process, he made it his signature tune.

Martin had quite a varied career, first reaching fame as one half of the Martin and Lewis Comedy Duo with Jerry Lewis ... then branching off on his own as a singer with a fair amount of early-to-mid '50's chart success ("That's Amore", "Return To Me", the aforementioned "Memories Are Made Of This" and his version of "Volare" are amongst his best-known and most-loved tunes.) He had also turned to movies and in the '60's would film westerns with John Wayne, assume the role of super-sleuth Matt Helm and pilot the inaugural run of "Airport." But it was on television that we all grew to love Dean Martin and his always loose and just-a-little-bit-tipsy personna. His NBC Series ran for nine years, ultimately spawning a new series of Celebrity Roasts that continued on into the early '80's. Today Martin is considered to be the epitome of "Lounge Cool" ... his songs are routinely used in movie soundtracks and television commercials and, surprisingly, one of his best known tracks, "Ain't That A Kick In The Head" never even made the pop charts!

Back in August of 1964, music from the new Beatles film was all over the chart ... "A Hard Day's Night" backed with "I Should Have Known Better" was now at #3 after spending two weeks in the #1 spot ... "And I Love Her" sat at #21 and "I'll Cry Instead" (recorded for ... but then later dropped from the film) was in at #23. The Beatles also had the #39 record that week with a track that they had
recorded in Germany back in 1961 ... it was John Lennon's rip-roaring vocal on "Ain't She Sweet", reminiscent of his take on "Twist And Shout", that makes THIS track so noteworthy ... yet it's one of those RARE Beatles tunes that isn't still played to death these days.

Other British Invasion Hits on the chart this week include "Wishin' And Hopin'" by Dusty Springfield (#2), "How Do You Do It" by Gerry and the Pacemakers (#8), "Because" by The Dave Clark Five (#13), "Nobody I Know" by Peter and Gordon (#16) and "I'll Keep You Satisfied" by Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas (#17) ... those last two were both Lennon and McCartney cast-offs, given to other artists in Manager Brian Epstein's stable ... and "How Do You Do It" was the song Producer George Martin WANTED The Beatles to record as their follow-up to "Love Me Do" before they insisted (and convinced him) that "Please Please Me" was a better song!

The Animals were new on the charts with "House Of The Rising Sun" ... this record would top the WLS chart for a week in September after The Supremes' three week reign on top with "Where Did Our Love Go". "Rag Doll" by The Four Seasons, "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan and Dean, "Handy Man" by Del Shannon, "Under The Boardwalk" by The Drifters and "People Say" by The Dixie Cups rounded out The Top Ten this week.

"Everybody Loves Somebody" was quite an unlikely hit to unseat The Beatles from the top of the charts ... but it wasn't the only time this happened during the early reign of Beatlemania. Earlier that year, Louis Armstrong topped the national charts with his reading of "Hello Dolly", knocking "Can't Buy Me Love" (also from The Beatles' film) out of the top spot after a five week run!

Kent,
I never heard the story about Dean predicting that his song, "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" would take the #1 spot away from the Beatles on the Billboard / Cash Box charts until you mentioned it to me in a recent email. However, I know he took pride in the fact that he supplanted whatever song the Beatles had at the top of the charts with this song.

What I do know about the song is that it was a late addition to an album already in progress. Dean's Producer at the time, Jimmy Bowen, needed one more song to complete the album. Dean's friend, accompanist and Musical Director Kenny Lane suggested a song he had written over twenty years earlier - it was "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime." He played it on the piano right there in the studio and Jimmy decided to add it.

Don't forget, Dean was at the top of his game at the time with a hit television show (the Dean Martin Show), a successful movie career, sold out performances in Vegas, etc., so everything was aligned perfectly for him. Not to mention it is a GREAT song and a great "reading" by Dean. It's no wonder it went all the way to #1.

Best,
Billy Hinsche
Dino, Desi & Billy

Actually, it was the success of this record (and several others released shortly thereafter in the same musical vein) that GOT him the TV Show. Dean had been recording for Frank Sinatra's Reprise Record label for a couple of years already without much chart success ... "Everybody Loves Somebody" was the first #1 Record recorded by the label ... ironically, Frank himself would top the charts a couple of years later with "Strangers In The Night"! And, the addition of Dino, Desi and Billy to the roster certainly helped Reprise Records appeal to the kids. (Watch for YOUR record to be featured as part of NEXT week's WLS Chart, Billy!!!) Soon Frank's daughter Nancy would also start having hits for the label ... and signing British Invasion artists like The Kinks helped the label compete with the other teen sounds of the day. (kk)
