Goldie Hawn on staying young at heart, sexism in Hollywood and working with Amy Schumer

Her nightclub gogo-dancing days are over, but the Oscar-winner and Snatched star hasn’t lost her shine

By Michael Hodges
Friday 19 May 2017

As a beautiful young actress in a business run by men, and cast alongside stars who were much older than her like Matthau or, in one sublime TV song-and-dance routine, Dean Martin, Hawn had to navigate her way through unwanted attention.

“Men are men,” she says. “It’s how we handle it. I wouldn’t want testosterone running through my veins, I really wouldn’t. Women are not built the way men are. Men are designed to spread their seed, that’s how they propagated the world. So forgiveness is important.”

Has Hawn had to forgive much? “When I was very young I had a couple of incidents,” she says. “Men can be kind of crazy and it also has to do with a lot of things about the woman. How does she handle herself? How does she carry herself? How does she deal with these situations? Because they come up all the time for women – whether they are movie stars or not.”

How did you react when it happened to you? “I would look the man in the eye and say, ‘Don’t ever do that again.’ I used my words. But I’m not talking about the really heavyweight stuff. If you start getting groped then absolutely you fight back. You do not allow that to happen.   But Dean Martin never did anything like that. Dean make a move? Never, ever. He was the most wonderful man.”

The last time I saw Paris
Her heart was warm and gay
I heard the laughter of her heart in every street cafe
The last time I saw Paris
Her trees were dressed for spring
And lovers walked beneath those trees
And birds found songs to sing
I dodged the same old taxicabs
That I had dodged for years
The chorus of the squeaky horns
Was music to my ears
Oh the last time I saw Paris
Her heart was warm and gay
No matter how they changed her
I'll remember her ah that way
Dodged the same old taxicabs
That I had dodged for years
The chorus of the squeaky horns
Was music to my ears
Yea, the last time I saw Paris
Her heart was warm and gay
No matter how they change her
I'll remember her that way
The last time I saw Paris
The last time I saw Paris

Nick Tosches: Once Upon a Time

Jean-Marc GrosdemougeMay 3, 2017

Nick Toshes is perhaps the most outrageous historian of popular cultures. Proof by three thanks to some of his books. By going to see who is hiding behind the legend Dean Martin, or by following the trail of an unknown artist named Emmett Miller, this end of Nick Tosches is cleared of margins. And outsiders of culture. All with an exceptional pen.

dino

Dino" (Shores)

Crooner, actor of cinema, seducer, Dean Martin has done everything. Made famous by his duet with Jerry Lewis in the 50's, Martin embodies American success. But who is it really? It is the American levee in all its contradiction, answers this book: Dino is a secret man. It must be said that it charms everyone: veteran agents, members of the Mafia, stars, politicians and of course ... the sublime women. The underground / show-biz links are discussed here. What we also learn is that Dino is a menefreghista, a "guy who does not give a fuck". "The advent of the phonograph and the kinetoscope has shaped the tastes of popular America," writes James Elroy. Dino understood this, and he, who has little passion for studies, who loves to sing and has discovered all kinds of trafficking during the Prohibition era, Becomes a cog in the fabulous machine to make dreams. Dino is not just a biography. Throughout the life of an unusual character, it is the history of American popular culture that takes shape, recounted with a stylistic virtuosity where lyricism rubs off with raw and provocative images. This is a striking picture of contemporary America.

Record Shopping Adventure in New Orleans

While I was in shopping, my wife went outside to call home to make sure the kids were still alive.  While outside she found a Dean Martin 45 on the sidewalk.  Of course we snagged it.

I love found records and will always take them home for a spin.  This one is special.  It's a Roger Miller style 'ridin the rails' type song.  Appropriately she found it near some railroad tracks.

Danny G's Sunday Serenade with Dino: "On The Street Where You Live"

What's up, pallies?!

Man o man...can't believe it's May already!!!

My head is in the clouds & I ain't comin' down! Haha!!
Not if I can help it, anyway!

Hey, pals...Dino has me in a spell, I guess.

You know what I mean, mi amici. You hear a certain song today...a Dino-jam, of course...& it just sounds a little different than it did yesterday
. It grabs your attention!
Sucks youse in & is buzzin'...like a bee in your ear...all day long!

Are youse followin' me, pallies? Hahaha!!!

Let me give youse an example.
I was drivin' home today...flickin' 'round the radio. Kinda just day dreamin'. Then it happened my friends...all of a sudden...Dean reached down to me!

Croonin' a tune I ain't heard in awhile.

Well well well, pals...I new IMMEDIATELY...here's this week's Serenade! "On the Street Where You Live".
I must've palyed this song ten times today, already! Ha!

So, ol' pallies o' mine...let me see if this COOL COOL jam gets youse floatin' up here with me!

If it does...GREAT! Stay awhile!
Thins' look pretty good from up here! Haha!!

Enjoy, pals!

I have often walked
Down the street before,
But the pavement always
Stayed beneath my feet before.
All at once am I
Several stories high,
Knowing I'm on the street where you live.
Are there lilac trees
In the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour
Out of every door?
No, it's just on the street where you live.
And oh, the towerin' feeling
Just to know somehow you are near
The overpowerin' feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear.
People stop and stare
They don't bother me,
For there's no where else on earth
That I would rather be.
Let the time go by,
I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live.
People stop and stare
They don't bother me,
For there's no where else on earth
That I would rather be.
Let the time go by
I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live,
Let me be on the street where you live.

Daliah Lavi, ’60s spy femme fatale, dies

Daliah Lavi, right, chats with Dean Martin during filming of TheSilencers
Daliah Lavi, who co-starred in the 1967 Casino Royale spoof as well as The Silencers, has died at 74, according to an obituary posted by The Hollywood Reporter.
Lavi also appeared in Some Girls Do and The Spy With the Cold Nose.
In 1966’s The Silencers, Lavi played Tina, a character actually in the first Matt Helm novel, Death of a Citizen.
While the movie was done as a spoof, the basic dynamic was retained from the serious original story. Helm thinks Tina is on his side when she’s really working for the other.
The ’66 movie, starring Dean Martin, took the basic plots of two serious Donald Hamilton novels and went in an outlandish direction.
Lavi’s career extended from the 1950s into the late 1990s. She was born in Palestine. The former actress died May 3 in Asheville, North Carolina, according to an obit published by the Asheville Citizen-Times.
That obit says her “funeral and interment will take place in her native Israel.”
