THE STYLES (AND CELEBS) OF THE ’60S ARE ON DISPLAY AT SLS’ ICONIC IMAGES GALLERY
Leslie Ventura Mon, Apr 20, 2015 (2:15 p.m.)
A 9-foot Brigitte Bardot stands at the top of the stairs dressed in all black, fingers running through her blonde locks and a gun strapped to her hip. The photo is part of the Iconic Images Gallery’s latest installation, a giant, three-sided display featuring the work of famed ’60s celebrity photographer Terry O’Neill. Besides the French actress, the work also features a black-and-white photo of Mick Jagger wrapped in a fur parka and a shot of the King of Cool himself, Dean Martin.
The former Sahara hotel was a stomping ground for prolific performers in the 1960s, and now, the property that replaced the landmark hotel is bringing images of those entertainers to life. A must-see for pop-culture aficionados, Iconic Images is full of photos from O’Neill and others—timeless shots of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Audrey Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Sean Connery and Raquel Welch—including another of Bardot, smoking a cigarette on the set of 1971 film Les Petroleuses (known in the U.S. as The Legend of Frenchie King).
While some photos are more recognizable than others (Douglas Kirkland’s black-and-white close-up of Audrey Hepburn’s Cheshire-cat smile), even diehard fans may find something new here. My personal favorite? A publicity still for the 1966 film, One Million Years B.C., featuring a crucified Raquel Welch. Yes, crucified. Now, if only I had $2,300 to spare.
