To him, nothing had a meaning unless he could relate it to Dean Martin.

Dean Martin ~ how he saw himself in the mirror

Hey pallies, likes if seems no matter how we try, we simply can't stay up-to-Dino-date on all the Dino-devotion 'round us.   Likes today's Dino-entry first appeared on the web over six years 'go, and we created a draft post of this likes, likes over three years ago, and havin' rediscovered our draft we have finishin' it off to shares with all youse Dino-holics this Dino-day.

Today's devotion to our Dino is 'bout the publication of a tome that has a heavy duty accent on our most beloved Dino.   We first discovered this Dino-focused book when our pallies at google sent us over to a 'net pad tagged "free online gamebook" where some pallie has posted an excellent review of Sam Moffie most intriguin' novel, "The Organ Grinder And The Monkey."

Likes with a tag likes that any dyed-in-the-wool Dino-holic woulda conjecture that this tome is 'bout our most beloved Dino and his side kick Jerry Lewis...'cause Martin & Lewis were often affectionally known with this tag...our Dino bein' the "organ grinder" and Mr. Lewis bein' the "monkey."

The plot of this work of fiction centered on a dude tagged Seymour Petrillo who's daddy-o "idolizes Dean Martin. To him, nothing had a meaning unless he could relate it to Dean Martin."  Now, likes how cool is that pallies?!?!?!?!

We digs that our Dino is featured on the cover of this tome and now that we have rediscovered it, we can't wait to gets to our local book joint to orders ourselves a copy of it...it outta be a great Dino-read.  Likes we gotta 'fess up that we are includin' the link through the tag of this Dino-post, where we first discovered  Moffie's work, but the link no longer goes anywhere.  'Gain we express our regrets not gettin' this Dino-information to all youse Dino-addicts sooner, but we are delighted to report that this Dino-homagin' novel is still in print for all our Dino-edification.  Dino-always, ever, and only, DMP

April 2008

The Organ Grinder and the Monkey

by Sam Moffie Book Review

Sam Moffie has written a unique novel about three protagonists, very different from each other, who share something in common.

The first character we are introduced to is Seymour Petrillo. Seymour’s family is quite different to say the least. His mother is obsessed that her ex is gay. Not only is Seymour’s dad gay but he idolizes Dean Martin. To him, nothing had a meaning unless he could relate it to Dean Martin. As a result, Seymour loved spending time with his grandparents. He enjoyed taking walks with his grandfather. He dreaded going over to his dad’s house because his “friends” made him feel uncomfortable. To make matters worse, Seymour has been diagnosed with multiple split personalities. Then we have his therapist who wrote a book on what Seymour did and made a great deal of money. Seymour got a college education and ended up in New York. Through the help of a woman, he got a job working in an animal shelter. His goal was to become a veterinarian.

Next, the reader is introduced to Irving Hanhart who is from Brookline, Massachusetts. Irving also comes from a very interesting family. His mother is Jewish and his father is Irish. Irving describes both of his parents as “revolutionaries”. His parents owned a bookstore called Moishe Pipecks. It was a sort of “hangout” for all the radical people. One of the reasons Irving was enrolled in a public school system is because the curriculum included field trips. On one class trip to the Newton City Hall, Irving became so engrossed in looking at the diorama that he became separated from the rest of his class. He felt someone shaking his shoulder. It was a policeman asking him if he were lost. He told Irving not be ashamed – that sometimes he gets lost too! The policeman took Irving to the office and told him everything would be all right. From this moment on, Irving knew he wanted to be a New York City policeman. Irving’s main problem now is his wife is addicted to drugs and alcohol. To save his own sanity, he belongs to Al-anon.

The third character is Constance Powers who is from Boardman, Ohio. She is talented and beautiful. She heads for New York City to become, what many think, will be a big star. Her dream is to become a Radio City Rockette. Well, things do not go as expected for Constance. She ends up doing some off-broadway work but her main job is at a strip club. Constance’s answer to everything was for the “Almighty to give an enema to…” Constance came from a wealthy family but she said they never saw any of the money because it got eaten up by a lot of “isms”.

As you can see the three protagonists end up in New York with a purpose – to pursue their dream. What happens?

The reader is taken on an extraordinary journey as we go through each person’s philosophy, struggles, desires and what each one considers to be a solution. This is a complex novel and it gives the reader much to think about as they turn the pages. The three characters are somewhat “unusual” and Sam does an excellent job with his descriptions for the reader that will draw them right into the story. Sam touches, in his own clever way, on many of the topics that exist in our society today.

This is Sam Moffie’s second novel. The first book is called Swap and the content and writing style for these two books are quite different. This author has no problem making this smooth transition from one style to the next and this is something that is normally done only by the best authors.

The only thing negative thing I have to say about this book is the print should be a little larger (especially for people like me who are 40). With that being said, the author’s writing style more than makes up for the small print.

Sam Moffie makes this a very interesting read by adding many emotions to tell the story. You will find quite a bit of humor. Remember the word “enema” and you will see what I am referring to.

To sum it up, this book is creative and imaginative. It is loaded with a great deal of explicit dialogue that keeps the story moving. There is no doubt in my mind that we will hear much more about Sam Moffie in the future.

PROFILE OF A MAN’S MAN: DEAN MARTIN

MMD SEPTEMBER 9, 2014

PROFILE OF A MAN’S MAN: DEAN MARTIN

One night Dean Martin held a gathering at his home. Guests ate, drank, and listened to music. Everyone was having a great time. Among the invited guests was Dean’s best friend and fellow member of the Rat Pack, old blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. Frank noticed that Dean was absent from the party for a fairly extended period of time but he brushed it off. For those guys, I imagine disappearing during a party was a fairly common occurrence given how much you could do in a dark coat check closet. Even still, as time wore on, Frank began to wonder where he was. Suddenly there was a knock at the door, it was the police. Frank answered and the cops asked for Dean. Frank went to look for him and found him upstairs in his bedroom. He was lying on his bed, reading the paper, looking completely calm and content, the way a man looks when there’s nobody in his house but him. Frank was a little frazzled and told him the cops were looking for him downstairs. Dean, barely looking up from whatever he was doing, told Frank, “They ate; they drank; now it’s time for them to go home.” When Sinatra realized that Dean had called the cops on his own guests he began laughing uncontrollably, hysterically. Who would do such a thing? Dean Martin would.

Dean was born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio in 1917. He dropped out of high school and earned a living bootlegging liquor, working at a speakeasy, dealing blackjack, working at a steel mill, and fighting as a welterweight boxer. He went by the name “Kid Crochet” and had 12 fights about which he often joked, “I won all but 11.” Dean was actually a pretty good fighter and had some talent.  He sang with local bands under the name Dino Martini but got his first break when he was invited to sing with the Ernie McKay Orchestra. Later on, he sang with bandleader Sammy Watkins, the man credited with giving him the name Dean Martin. Dean was a local success and performed in small clubs drawing good sized crowds. The real money started to roll in and his star began to rise when he teamed up with Jerry Lewis and they formed the music-comedy act Martin and Lewis. He acted in films such as The Young Lions, Some Came Running, Rio Bravo, Kiss Me, Stupid and many more. Dean was also a member of the Rat Pack with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford. He had hit record after hit record with songs like Volare and Mambo Italiano. Nicknamed “The King of Cool”, (Has there ever been a cooler nickname?) Dean used his suave and laid back personality to his advantage cultivating a drunk, womanizing playboy type of character. It served him well. He was a massive success as a singer, actor, and comedian for decades, the definition of an entertainer and one of the biggest stars in the world. The Rat Pack was the most powerful group of entertainers in American history. Their influence knew no bounds and that is not an exaggeration by any means. Dean lived a life that more than 99.9% of us can only dream of and lived to the ripe old age of 78. There will never be another Dean Martin. He was a true gentleman and the definition of a man’s man.

“Showmanship is a dying art that I learned from watching Dean Martin on TV when I was a kid,”

Hey pallies, likes one thin' we can't ever ever gets 'nough of is sharin' other talented entertainers who powerfully point to our Dino as their role model and mentor.  Case in point is Mr. Paul Thorn who  released his most recent musical al-b-um tagged "Too Blessed To Be Stressed."

In an post from the musical blog Jamband News tagged  "Paul Thorn readies ‘Too Blessed to Be Stressed’ album for August 19 release," Thorn speeks so beautifully boldly of how our most beloved Dino incredibly influenced his own croonin' career sayin', "  “Showmanship is a dying art that I learned from watching Dean Martin on TV when I was a kid.”   Likes what a thrill it brings to our hearts when we learn of 'nother entertainer pallie who has modeled their work after the life, times, and teachin's of our Dino.

And, likes as we were prepartin' to post this wonderful bit of Dino-homage, we thoughts that we recalled sharin' more Dino-honorin' devotion from Mr. Thorn in the past.  A quick search of ilovedinomartin discovered an even more powerful post that we shared here on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 tagged "Paul Thorn on Growing up with a Pimp and a Preacher, Dean Martin, and Boxing."  Likes youse just might wanna checks that out as well.

Paul Thorn on Growing up with a Pimp and a Preacher, Dean Martin, and Boxing

Nonetheless, Thorn possessed the ability to charm audiences right from the start. Not only with his music, but with the stories he tells from the stage. “Showmanship is a dying art that I learned from watching Dean Martin on TV when I was a kid,” Thorn explains. “He could tell little jokes and then deliver a serious song, then make you laugh again. And he would look into the camera like he was looking right at you through the TV. That’s what I want to do — make people feel like I’m talking directly to them.”

Hey pallies, likes on this day, September 1, 1949, the weddin' bells did chime for our most beloved Dino and his beauty queen Miss Jeanne Biegger. Dino and Miss Jeanne, wife numero duo, tied the knot at  Herman Hover's pad.

As we devotedly remember this day of absolute bliss for our Dino, ilovedinomartin shares with you a post that Deanager Catie shared at her tumblr blog, "They always look better at night..," on this day of Dino-significance, last in 2012.  Our Catie combines an outstandin' weddin' pix of the beau-ti-ful couple with some prose scribed by Mr. Jerry Lewis from his magnificant Dino-bio, "Dean and Me: A Love Story."

Just grooves to be likes readin' these kind of glorious Dino-details....and these reflections from Mr. Lewis notin' the extremely close relationship that our most beloved Dino had with his bestest of best pallie Jerry.

You just got out of a marriage,” I said. “What the fuck are you rushing into another one for?”

He just stared at me, shocked that I had hit the issues on the button. I hurried to explain myself. “Forgive me, Paul.” I said. “Jeanne’s a great girl, and I think she would follow you to the ends of the earth. I know she would wait until you were ready. And there are four kids to think about.”

Dean thought for a moment. “Listen Jer,” he said. “You know me better than anyone, so what I say is between us. I do worry about my kids. But this feels so right. So strong.”

I nodded, finally understanding that he was really in love, and probably for the first time. “It’s your life, pal,” I told him. “And you have to do what’s best for you. You’ve always taken care of your kids; now it’s your turn to take care of yourself. Everything’ll fall into place.”

He threw his arms around me in a bear hug and whispered into my ear: “Thanks, Jer.”

As it turned out, Jeanne was the best thing that ever happened to Dean.
