The doubts and wanderings Dude are also particularly touching.....

Hey pallies, likes hot on the heels of yesterday's Dino-gram accentin' a Swede's blogger banter on the wonders of our Dino playin' the role of the Dude in "Rio Bravo" comes today's Dino-entry....more 'nother international insights on our Dino's classic western "Rio Bravo" a la a French blogger who hangs their hat at the blog "L'Art aux Quatre Vents," which translates to "Art To The Four Winds."

Their post most interestin'ly tagged "Rio Bravo, or when the comedy is invited to the western country," is a mighty mix of powerful prose and incredible images from "Rio Bravo."  One of the most interestin' thin's 'bout this review is the focus is more on the major characters then on the actors themselves.  So, the blogger doesn't say much more then our Dino plays the Dude, but in speakin' of the Dude's character they say  coolly complementary comments, such as the one that we used to tag this Dino-report:  "The doubts and wanderings Dude are also particularly touching....."

So, we know without a doubt in the world that this scribber is absolutely in awe of our Dino's remarkable performance, just as just 'bout every reviewer always is!  We deeply digs that we are able to share two days in row reviews of "Rio Bravo" and both from international sources.....yesterday Sweden and today France!

Likes we thanks very much the French pallie who has put considerable time and talent into their ravin' reflections on "Rio Bravo" and we woulda loves to hear tons more from 'em on some of our Dino's other major big screen efforts.  To checks this out in it's original source, likes simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram.

We remain,

Yours in Dino,

Dino Martin Peters

FILM HISTORY

Rio Bravo, or when the comedy is invited to the western country

This western Howard Hawks, dating from 1959, is a classic. In the small town of West Rio Bravo, John Wayne portrays an exemplary Sheriff John T. Chance. He faces a bunch of hoodlums particularly ruthlessly terrorizing the city. For this it is helped by two companions: Dude (Dean Martin), a former drunk who is the laughingstock of the inhabitants, and Stumpy, a crippled old man who does not mince words.

The film begins in a saloon where Dude just beg to drink without a penny. He is humiliated by Joe Burdette, whose brother Nathan is the most dangerous robber city. A fight undertakes, during which Joe kills an unarmed innocent.Sheriff Chance managed to arrest him for murder with the help of Dude and leads him into the jail guarded by old Stumpy. Nathan Burdette, a rich man who has seemingly dozens of men in his pay, then blocks access to the city to prevent the transfer of his brother. He swears he will release Joe, whatever the cost in human lives.

The band Burdette threat Chance

The Chance, Dude and Stumpy trio seems a bad way, having to stand alone against the Burdette band armed to the teeth ... they will nevertheless be helped by the young Colorado, who wants to avenge the murder of her employer by a Burdette men, and Feathers, a young poker player and former dancer who falls in love saloon sheriff.

Chance, Colorado and Stumpy prepare to face the men in Burdette

What touched me the most in this film is what characters trio Chance / Dude / Stumpy, that seem rather harsh at first but went by very human flaws and their affection they have towards each others.
The sheriff, leader of the group, appears at first as insensible and imperturbable, concerned only with its mission of keeping order. Yet it takes Dude as assistant without hesitation, when it is just beginning to emerge from his alcoholism. And when Dude lack of abandoning his post, Chance pretends not need it to better restore its self-esteem.He also seduced by Feathers, this woman came by diligence, even as Dude had fallen into alcoholism because of a dancer, met in similar circumstances ... The sheriff without fear and without reproach is not to make mistakes, and can also be distracted from his duty by sentiment.

The doubts and wanderings Dude are also particularly touching, her lost look, his clothes in rags, her trembling when he thinks no longer able to cope. It contrasts with the character of Colorado, little researched and quite grotesque.

When to Stumpy, very nice old grouch, he let go his position as watchman for the world. His only fear is to become useless or worse, cause problems: it is completely distraught when he almost kills Dude by mistake, or when his friends leave him on the back upon leaving the band to storm Burdette.

Stumpy is the keeper of the city prison

Despite the perilous and almost desperate position of the characters, the film keeps a form of light comedy where prompt. Thus in the first four minutes of the film, without words, the arrival of Dude and his fight with Joe's almost funny: every punch is punctuated by music, and when the sheriff arrives and turns on itself, it seems almost that sketch a dance.
Also in the middle of the film, almost without transition with the preceding scene, the characters suddenly begin to sing, as if you were in a musical! With singers Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson (Colorado), one is plunged back into the tradition of sung westerns of the 30s ... I love this scene, which you can find on YouTube here .

The characters also have a form of recklessness, away from their position, almost self-deprecating, making them particularly endearing and close to us. Because beyond the threat of Burdette in the background, many situations are similar to what each of us can live: a lover grief that causes depression, friendly moments with men who entertain with a guitar a flirtation between a man and a woman he met by chance ...

Stumpy, Colorado Dude and relax to forget their perilous situation

Critics have interpreted Rio Bravo as a response to the famous High Noon , in which the sheriff, facing a similar problem with a bunch of off-the-law, request assistance to civilians in vain. This film is a metaphor for McCarthyism of the silence of the inhabitants of the city echoed the American silence allowed to McCarthy, in his persecution of communists in the early 50s.
It is true that unlike in Rio Bravo , the sheriff fully ensures its responsibilities and, far from asking for help, try the maximum to avoid any danger to the civilian population. But above all, the western is not seeking to be justified by additional interest, to be "over-western" in the words of critic André Bazin. Here, no reference to a social context outside. The richness of the film is rather the contrast between the seriousness of the context and the comic situations, attachment viewer to the characters and lightness that emerges from the whole.
