April 30, 2001 Vol. 55 No. 17 Dean's Genes By Samantha Miller
Dean Martin's Grandson Alex Gets His Feet Wet in the Family Business Growing up in one of show business's famous families has its privileges. When Alex Martin was in middle school in 1986, "all I wanted to do was meet Roger Moore," he says. "I loved James Bond." Martin revealed his wish to his grandmother, and during the next family Christmas party, "I was in my room, and Roger Moore and Sean Connery came in," says Martin. "I had both the Bonds with me watching Road Warrior. It was unbelievable." [

Or as Martin's grandfather Dean would have put it, ain't that a kick in the head? The legendary entertainer, who died in 1995 at age 78, would have gotten a charge out of his grandson's budding movie career—though heaven only knows what he would make of the numbers Alex, 28, croons as a member of Dujour, a boy-band spoof in the new movie Josie and the Pussycats. Make that lip-synchs. "I'd love to be able to sing," admits Martin, "but I can't."

The small part is the biggest yet for the son of actor-singer Dean Paul Martin, who died in a plane crash in 1987 at age 35, and actress Olivia Hussey, 50, known for the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet. Alex, whose résumé includes a role in 1998's Can't Hardly Wait, tends to keep quiet about his heritage. His best friend, Josie costar Breckin Meyer, 26, recalls being pals with Alex "for months" at Beverly Hills High before finding out about his famous forebears. Sure, he had seen photos of Dean in Alex's home, but "I was like, 'What is this obsession?' " says Meyer. "And then he was like, 'Oh, yeah, that's my grandfather.' "

His grandfather and father, says Martin, "were like gods to me when I was growing up." When Alex was 3, his mother and father divorced. For the next five years, while his Argentinean-born mother acted in movies overseas, he stayed with grandmother Jeanne Martin, 74, who had been divorced from Dean in 1973 but remained close to him until his death. (Dean's 1973 marriage to Cathy Hawn ended in divorce after three years.) Alex remembers bonding with his grandfather at about age 7. "He was always sitting on the couch watching golf," Alex says, "and it took me about an hour to get up the guts to crawl across the couch to him. Not because he was Dean Martin but because he was, you know, the gruff grandfather. I ended up falling asleep in his lap."

Alex was 14 and living with his mother when his father—who played in the rock band Dino, Desi &c Billy as a teenager, starred in the 1979 movie Players and was married to skater Dorothy Hamill for three years in the mid-'80s—died during a routine exercise for the California Air National Guard. Alex and a friend of his father's were listening in the control room when his father's F-4C Phantom jet inexplicably crashed. "They brought [LB]Alex| back here to me, and he just went into his room and closed the door," says Jeanne. Alex credits his mother (who lives outside L.A. with fourth husband David Eisley and Alex's half siblings Max, 18, and India Joy, 7) for his ability to cope. "My mom introduced me to a guru in India, and because I was exposed to that kind of philosophy, [the accident[RB] was obviously terrible but I understood it," he says.

A self-described "drama geek" at Beverly Hills High, Martin attended acting school in London for two years before returning to L.A. in 1994 and hitting the audition circuit. During Dean's last years, Alex often met him at La Famiglia restaurant in Beverly Hills, where the singer, shattered by his son's death and stricken with emphysema, dined almost every night. "He'd say, 'Hey, pallie, come sit down,' and it was great," says Alex. "He was so mellow and casual. He was never 'on.' He was just him."

The single, unattached actor spends off-hours visiting family, playing guitar and reading voraciously ("I have something like 6,000 books") in his one-bedroom L.A. apartment. Last year, after Alex traded quips with family members at their annual Christmas Eve gathering, Jeanne took him aside. "She said to me, 'You know, you would have made your grandfather and your dad very proud tonight. You were just as funny as they were,' " Martin says. "That meant a lot."

Hey pallies, our pallie Mark over at the stellar "Pop Culture Fan Boy" shares 'nother important date in Dinohistory (clicks on the tagg of this Dinogram to goes to Mark's pad to read this in it's original form). It was 81 years ago this Dinoday that our Dino was confirmed and took the Confirmation name Paul. Accordin' to the Steubenville Dinofestsite our Dino had his first Holy Communion on May 15, 1927...and will tries very Dinohard to remember that Dinodate in a couple of Dinoweeks.

BTW pallies, did a bit of Dinoresearch and our Dino had both his first communion and confirmation at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Steubenville. Also Dinodiscovered the sad Dinofact that our Dino's childhood parish was closed in 2008...does know that for several Dinoyears on the Sunday of Dinofest there was a Mass said for our Dino at St. Anthony's church...such a sad thin' that this Dinolandmark has been closed.

Below are a pix of our Dino and bro Bill which I' Dinoguessin' was taken 'bout the time that our Dino was confirmed....and a pix of the church where our Dino's parents were married, where our Dino was baptized, received his first holy communion, and was confirmed. Dinofactually, DMP

And from the Steubenville Dinofestsite....

'Dino' Marries Cathy Hawn, 25 UPI St. Petersburg Times April 26, 1973

Entertainer Dean Martin married his girlfriend of two years, Cathy Hawn, 25, in a small ceremony at his Hollywood home,Wednesday evening. Frank Sinatra was his best man. It was the third marriage for Martin, 55. It was Miss Hawn's second marriage, and her 6-year old daughter, Sasha, was the flower girl. The bride word a peach champaign French chiffon satin bias-cut gown with a high draped neck and a long train for the ceremony at Martin's home in the Bel Air area.

" found more. She was a Beauty Salon Receptionist. I found this article from Time/ Cnn
The bridegroom's seven children and the bride's six-year-old daughter joined Best Man Frank Sinatra at the most lavish reception ever recalled by the staff of the Beverly Hills Hotel. The assistant chef had spent five days in the freezer molding the names of Newlyweds Dean Martin, 55, and Catherine Mae Hawn, 25, into a massive ice sculpture of hearts and cherubs. Under 15 hanging cages of cooing white doves, 85 guests enjoyed Dean's favorite beluga caviar ($190 a pound) and Dom Pérignon ($33 a bottle). The bride and groom stayed only an hour, then returned to the site of the wedding: Dean's Bel Air mansion, decorated to resemble a chapel, complete with dark oak pews borrowed from two movie studios."

On This Day In Dinohistory: April 25, 1973

Hey pallies, likes so so sorry to be couple of Dinodays late in gettin' this piece of Dinohistory Dinogramed to ya...but didn't want to let this slip totally was on April 25, 1973 that our Dino tied the knot with Dinowife numero 3, a chick tagged Cathy Mae Hawn,...a receptionist at a Beverly Hills Beauty Salon. Somewhere in my Dinostudies Miss Hawn was tagged Cathy with the candified K (coulda it have been Tosches' stellar Dinobio?). Have always held the Dino-opinion that our Dino is perfect in each and every Dinoway...but if our Dino ever coulda made a miss step, likes I do think it was with this Cathy person. The marriage lasted 'bout 3 years and this Dinoholic's Dinothought is that Cathy was certainly not the worthy one to have been married to our great man. Thanks to our pallie Mark over the cool blog "Pop Culture Fan Boy" for this Dinofo...just click on the tagg of this Dinogram to got there and see this in it's original form. Wonder what Dinothoughts any of you pallies have on who our Dino oughta made his for me woulda loved to see our Dino married to Miss Petula Clark, or Miss Ann-Margret...or even Miss Gail whom our Dino was engaged for a brief time. American Idol to do Rat Pack songs, with Taylor Hicks back

Hey pallies, likes how cool is week is Rat Pack week on American Idol with the contestants all singin' Rat Pack songs....gotta wonder what Dinotune or two will be sung and by read this in it's original format at Newsday, just clicks on the tagg of this Dinogram and then you will also be able to go to other links as well... In our Dino, DMP

American Idol to do Rat Pack songs, with Taylor Hicks back

American Idol's next theme is songs of the Rat Pack, the nickname for Frank Sinatra and his friends Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop (oddly, Fox's press release omits Peter and Joey). With Taylor Hicks performing “Seven Mile Breakdown.”

Matt Giraud is going to have a huge advantage -- his style is the best fit for the Rat Pack's cool Vegas songs, like "Luck Be A Lady," "Only Have Eyes for You," "Ring-A-Ding-Ding."

Adam Lambert should be great too, he'll get a chance to go all theatrical again. Think of a guy in a suit smoking a cigarette with a drink in hand in front of a band, and you've got the general vibe.

I think Kris Allen will do better than Danny Gokey, because he's cooler. Sinatra's group was all about attitude; Danny is probably a bit too geeky to pull it off.

And Allison Iraheta's in for a tough week--the Rat Pack vibe has women around just for decoration. But she can sing anything, so who knows.

And after all, the original Rat Pack was centered around Humphrey Bogart and his way young, talented wife Lauren Bacall.

You know how to whistle, don't you?

Who do you think will do best singing the songs of the Rat Pack? Any particular songs you think your favorite should sing? Tell us in the comments, below.

April 7/14/21, 1956:
This is also the week that Dean Martin climbs to #31 on the Top 100 with “Innamorata.” He featured the song in a Martin Lewis film, Artists and Models. A Jerry Vale cover pales by comparison, of course.

April 7/14/21, 1958:
Showing his radio power, Dean Martin debuts on the Jockey chart at #20 with “Return to Me.” He is tied for #50 on the Best Sellers and tied for #53 on the Top 100. Clearly, radio was ready for another Dino tune.

DEAN MARTIN - Crooners Influencing The 60s

All of them sing but most of the following superstars are known better as crooners. Dean Martin (image), Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Tony Bennett, Al Martino, Andy Williams, Jack Jones, Jerry Vale, Robert Goulet, Vic Damone, Engelbert Humperdinck, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin, Mel Torme, Eddie Fisher, Perry Como come under a category called "vocals - for easy listening pleasure."

For seniors both in Singapore and across the world, the above singers are as familiar as the songs they sing and the list would include, 'That's Amore', 'Lady Is A Tramp', 'Moon River', 'Stardust', 'Release Me', 'Mona Lisa', 'Mack The Knife', 'Oh My Papa' and so on.

The scene is familiar. Dimmed lights in the evening after dinner and the record is placed on the turntable and the crooner begins his song, "When the moon hits your eyes/Like a big pizza pie/That's amore..." And Dean Martin's magic spreads round the living or dining room with soothing, sentimental easy vocals and dream music.

In the 60s, the scene is different. Singaporeans would dance to these songs on the usually crowded night clubs across the island. More so, they would be romancing their partner on the dance floor. The Singlish (Singapore English) term is 'part-tor'.

Review by Jason Bailey | posted April 13, 2009

The Movie:

The first thing worth noting about Lost Concert Series: Dean Martin is that the title is a complete misnomer. This isn't a concert at all; it is, in fact, a collection of musical performances from Martin's early TV appearances, mostly his gigs hosting The Colgate Comedy Hour with then-partner Jerry Lewis. The title and cover art are therefore more than a little deceptive, showing a 60s-era Dino in front of a Las Vegas skyline (these TV shows were done in Los Angeles). Not that the title is apparently that important; even the distributors aren't quite sure, with the disc titled "Dean Martin: Legends In Concert" on the on-screen menu and "Dino: The Early Performances" at the beginning of the program. Throw 'em all on the wall and see what sticks, I guess.

Titling gaffes aside, this is a pretty decent compilation of Martin tunes, though most are in a hurried or abbreviated form to keep up the fast variety show pace. Nineteen songs are smashed into the disc's 42-minute running time, which makes for an average of less than two-and-a-half minutes each; some, like "I wonder Who's Kissing Her Now," are noticeably shorter than that.

The iconic "That's Amore!" is wisely chosen to lead off the program, and it is a rousing, swinging rendition that takes a few liberties with the recorded version. His performance of "Carolina in the Morning" is sweet and infectious, and "Memories are Made of This" is an enjoyable pseudo-country number, with Martin backed by acoustic guitars and murmuring background vocals. He sings the breezy "One for My Baby and One More for the Road" with a glimmer in his eye, and his poise in "Louise"--tuxedo tie undone, snapping his fingers, grinning, and maybe a little buzzed--is classic Dino. The disc's highlight, however, may very well be his lovery, forelorn take on "If You Were the Only Girl in the World," which is just plain marvelous.

A few other numbers don't quite work, at least not as self-contained songs (many are performed on sets and backdrops that don't make much sense out of context). An awkward, slowed-down version of "When You're Smiling" appears to have been staged as some kind of lullaby, and doesn't work that way. His performances are mostly flawless, but he looks fairly worn-out and sweaty on "Isle of Capri" and "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," and also seems a little out of it on "You Made Me Love You," although it concludes with a very funny (and unexpected) punchline. A couple of other songs are wrecked by intrusive post-production work--during "Almost Like Being In Love" and "Love Me with All Your Heart," the editor inexplicably cuts away to shoddy-looking freeze frames of Martin, captured from other parts of these programs. It's an unattractive augmentation that calls unwanted attention to itself.

But Martin is terrific, and it's admittedly fun to watch these early clips of the crooner in action. It's just a shame that the program has been so sloppily assembled; not only are the songs listed in incorrect order on the disc's sleeve, but the end credits leave out such valuable information as where the clips came from and even who composed the songs (we just get a list, though thankfully this one is in the right order). Combine that sloppiness with the disc's scant running time, and this one feels like a bit of a con job.

The full-frame image looks about as good as can be expected with clips this old, which were presumably transferred from kinescope recordings. The customary dirt, scratches, and "black holes" will come as no surprise to anyone who's watched much vintage TV. The picture quality varies some from program to program, with some clips fairly crisp and others aging badly; the performance of "Too Young," for example, uses dim, soft-focus photography that looks like a blurry mess here.

We also get an obtrusive "GMVS- Dino: The Early Performances" burn-in that pops up occasionally in the lower right corner throughout the program; extra points taken off for that irritation.

Though no audio menu is available, the viewer can choose between 5.1 and 2.0 mixes that are a bit of a cheat. Obviously, these shows were recorded in mono, and a package that can't even get the title right clearly didn't spring for a remix. So there's no separation at all, and you're basically choosing between whether you'd like to hear the same audio coming out of two speakers or five. That said, we don't expect a sophisticated audio mix for old TV performances, and this audio is passable--clear and well-modulated, if occasionally hissy and a little bit thin.

No bonus features are offered for this disc.

Final Thoughts:

Inaccurately titled though it may be, Lost Concert Series: Dean Martin offers some fine archival footage of some terrific performances. The presentation is a little on the sloppy side, however, and the brief running time certainly doesn't make it feel like a must-own. Hardcore fans may want to pick it up, but everyone else is more than safe leaving this one for the rental list.

Dean Martin, Dino Latino

Martin and Lewis. The Rat Pack. Crooning sensation, movie and television star. Dean Martin's career in the spotlight, beginning in America's post-WWII years, was so varied and successful that he virtually came to define the notion of the larger-than-life "entertainment personality." By the early '60s, he was making records frequently, and this one came out in 1963, around the same time as others with titles like Italian Love Songs, Cha Cha de Amor, and French Style. So why not Dino Latino? His distinctively relaxed and mellow singing seems to fit the Latin groove of such songs as "Manana Is Soon Enough for Me," "South of the Border," and "Besame Mucho" especially well. There's even a Latin treatment of "Tangerine," all bongos and clave beat, that's especially pleasing. With both sweeping strings and brassy moments, it showcases Martin at the peak of his powers and feels, like almost everything he did, nearly effortless.

Just to be sad
Thinking of you

Some others I've seen
Might never be mean
Might never be cross
Try to be boss
They wouldn't do
For nobody else
Gave me a thrill
With all your faults
I love you still

It had to be you
Wonderful you
It had to be you

Some others I've seen
Might never be mean
Might never be cross
Or try to be boss
But they wouldn't do
'Cause nobody else
Gave me a thrill
With all your faults
I love you still
It had to be you
Had to be you
Had to be you
It had to be you
Wonderful you
It had to be you

It had to be you
Wonderful you
It had to be you

Sextet of Classic Dean Martin Albums Reissued for Digital Download
Albums Reissued for Digital Download

By: PR Newswire
Apr. 7, 2009 08:03 AM

Includes Two Gold Albums And The Pop Hits "Everybody Loves Somebody," "(Remember Me) I'm The One Who Loves You" And "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You"

Dean Martin iPhone Application Also Debuts

LOS ANGELES, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- A digital deluge of Dino--Dean Martin, the King of Cool--has begun. In the wake of his 2009 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, six of Martin's classic albums were reissued in March by Hip-O/UMe in digital format with improved sound quality and new or refreshed downloadable cover images. More than 20 other full-length titles will be released in the near future. All will be available as full-length albums and by individual track via iTunes, Amazon, and other digital outlets. In addition, a Dean Martin iPhone application also debuts April 7.

The initial six releases from one of the most popular entertainers in history are French Style, Dino Latino, Dream With Dean, (Remember Me) I'm The One Who Loves You, Dean Martin Hits Again and Sittin' On Top Of The World. They follow the January 2009 release of the Hip-O/UMe Dean Martin - Love Songs collection.

The iPhone application features a discography with the ability to preview tracks and buy albums (via the iTunes store), photos which the user can send as electronic postcards, a memory game involving matching Dean photos, and a news feed.

A timeless icon who defined the smooth, suave, seductive crooner, Martin boasted more than 30 albums, 12 of them certified gold. He originally signed to Capitol Records, where he scored several major hits. He moved to Reprise, the imprint formed by pal Frank Sinatra, in its inaugural year. How cool is Dino today? In just the last couple of years there have been homages in the Ocean's Eleven films, a posthumous Top 10 Adult Contemporary duet with Martina McBride of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and his "Ain't That A Kick In The Head" gracing a Budweiser TV commercial that premiered during Super Bowl XLI.

French Style was Martin's first Reprise album and featured "April In Paris," "C'est Si Bon" and "Gigi." Continuing the Continental theme, Dino Latino mined Spanish influences for "Manana (Is Soon Enough For Me)," "South Of The Border" and "Besame Mucho." His first Reprise gold album arrived with Dream With Dean, which showcased his late night lounge singer vibe with the album version of the gold, #1 smash "Everybody Loves Somebody" as well as "Smile" and "My Melancholy Baby."

(Remember Me) I'm The One Who Loves You introduced the pop-country style that would mark some of his biggest hits, such as this gold album's Top 40 title track, "I Don't Think You Love Me Anymore" and "King Of The Road." Dean Martin Hits Again reprised his Top 40 "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" alongside new recordings such as the Pop Top 40s "Send Me The Pillow You Dream On" and "In The Chapel In The Moonlight." Several years later, Sittin' On Top Of The World found Martin returning to the standards with "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles," "Almost Like Being In Love" and its title track.

Said Recording Academy president Neil Portnow of Dino and the other 2009 Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award honorees: "Their outstanding accomplishments, legendary passion and artistry have positively affected our culture and will continue to influence and inspire generations to come."

A Song For Our Troubled Times?
April 6th, 2009
By JOE GANDELMAN, Editor-In-Chief

Sometimes old songs have a message worth revisiting. These aren’t the happiest times for Americans and many people all over the world, but the words of this song give a lift (as does its singer, the great Dean Martin). Fitting, indeed:

On This Day In Dinohistory....April 3, 1949

Here for your Dinoviewin' pleasure is a truly bromantic moment with the jer washin' up with our great man. Dinobromanticly, DMP

...... but to also set up a martini bar to honor Dean Martin and his “pack”.

Hey pallies, it is so so refreshin' to find more and more people seekin' to honor our Dino. Here's a story from Beacon Media News in Cali where a chick tagged Deborah his plannin'a "stock the bar" party for a couple and so so wisely has decided to honor our Dino in the process. Reads it for yourself below, and likes if you wanna read the whole article, likes just clicks on the tagg of this Dinogram. How cool it is to see our Dino bein' celebrated in every Dinoway Dinopossible. Dinohonorin', DMP

By Deborah Ann Neely

"I decided that an old- fashioned cocktail party would be fun and I love a theme to help me with ideas. Now I am not talking corny and no games please but just an ambience to make a party feel special.
My plan for drinks will be to have the usual wine and beer but to also set up a martini bar to honor Dean Martin and his “pack”. I am creating four different recipe cards for a variety of martinis and I will have all the ingredients needed for each concoction. One of the recipes will be for a favorite chocolate martini for the dessert part of the evening, in hopes we can draw the men into the den when it is time to open the gifts. There are so many flavors for the martini now but I definitely plan to have a regular dirty martini to satisfy those not into the fruity taste."

"How Do You Make A Fruit Cordial?"

Hey pallies, Dinowisdom is everywhere these a web pad tagged "The International Free Press Society, I found this Dinoquotation in the article, "Speech Regulation Is No Laughing Matter" by a dude tagged Mark Steyn (to visit this in it's orginal format, just clicks on the tagg of this Dinopost).

Nows, likes don't mean any disrespect to anyone with this Dinoquip, but likes it does prove that no one is more cordial in there conversation or free-er in their speech then our Dino....our great man always spoke his mind...and the masses loved him for it. And, likes pallies, for our Dino freedom of speech was ever a laughin' matter..... Dinofreely, DMP

At Vegas, Dean Martin used to have a bit of business where he’d refill his tumbler and ask Frank, “How do you make a fruit cordial?” And Sinatra would go, “I dunno. How do you make a fruit cordial?” And Dino would say, “Be nice to him.”
