Dean Martin famously refused to complete the shoot

Hey pallies, likes once 'gain we gets the deep deep delight of payin' 'nother visit with our Dino-devoted pallie Mr. John McElwee over at his self tagged blog, "John McElwee's GREENBRIAR Picture Shows."  Today John will share with us his rewardin' reflections 'bout the Dino-flick that never got to the big screen 'cause it never got finished.  Likes, of course, we are speakin' of the ultimate sex farce "Something's Gotta Give" that starred our most beloved Dino with none other then Miss Marilyn Monroe.

John gives a great behind-the-scenes report of this most anticipated silver screen project which 20th Century Fox removed Miss Marilyn from and our gallant gentleman Dino refused to finish with our Miss Monroe.  McElwee keeps this mostly Marilyn focused, but we have chosen to share it here for a couple of Dino-reasons.  First, John reverently remembers our Dino's awesome action of great kindness toward his co-star, and second, he shares a quartet of powerfully potent pixs of our Dino makin' the scene with Monroe....hotter then hot in our Dino-perspective.

We salute Mr. John McElwee for sharin' more important moments in the life, times, and teachin's of our one and only Dino.....remindin' all of us Dino-holics of what a laudable, loyal, and faithful friend he was to Miss Marilyn Monroe.  To checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.  Dino-devotedly, DMP

Fox Finishing The Unfinished

Just a few notes about Something’s Got To Give before I leave poor Marilyn alone. This may be the most famous unfinished movie ever not quite made, with public awareness going all the back to when Fox cobbled a feature tribute called Marilyn in 1962, hosted by Rock Hudson, which included pieces of SGTG. There was hunger for Monroe footage right from her death. A lot of odd stuff was preserved that would have otherwise gone into dumpsters. A DVD documentary produced by 20th shows a vault bulging with hours of Something’s Got To Give. They’d kept this even as three-strip negatives from the studio’s Technicolor inventory were being dumped. Film history would better have been served had it been the other way around. The DVD has a first-ever assembly of those scenes more or less completed in 1962. What survives is tired comedy anticipating a Dark Age of Doris Day vehicles to come.Something’s Got To Give was in fact revisited and ultimately completed with Day in Marilyn’s part. The remnants landed in 1963 and was called Move Over, Darling. Fox would lose $$ on that one after Doris Day’s participation money came off. Some projects are just doomed no matter what. Monroe’s apparent refusal to finish Something’s Got To Give might have been a matter of knowing what a poor specimen it was and misbehaving in hopes Fox would give up and shut down. She always was perceptive enough to know good comedy from bad. Billy Wilder acknowledged Monroe’s instinct for spotting laughs in given scenes and playing to a best realization of same. Based on the forty or so minutes we have ofSomething’s Got To Give, there was no mirth there to mine. Dean Martin famously refused to complete the shoot after Marilyn dropped out and Fox signed Lee Remick to pinch-hit. He probably realized that without Monroe, SGTG had no chance.

Of Marilyn’s truancies during production, the worst was cutting out for Washington and Jack Kennedy’s birthday party. She could always manage miraculous recovery for events like this. A surviving kinescope is among the spookiest chunks of film ever recorded, almost like a warm-up for the Zapruder footage. The ballroom looks stadium sized. What faces we detect are ghostly blurs, and there are oceans of them. Laughter is distant as if summoned from beyond. Host Peter Lawford might be death itself holding a sickle. Marilyn enters (late) in wrath-like white and barely manages her rendition ofHappy Birthday. The miserable kine quality makes it seem lots longer ago than forty-seven years. Wasn’t this close around the time of the Cuban Missle Crisis? Watching makes you think a bomb’s already been dropped and these celebrants are what’s left. Indeed, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that everybody in that room came to bad ends.

Would Monroe have been happier just being a model? According to histories, she came brightest to life when posing for stills. MM may have been the century’s most accomplished exhibitionist. Going into Something’s Got To Give minus added pounds she’d carried duringSome Like It Hot, Marilyn flaunted improvements and got huge publicity for a nude swimming scene that was featured on LIFE’s cover. This was hot potatoes for a yet Code-restricted 1962 and set observers were getting word out that she’d really done the scene naked. It’s naturally a focal point when watching Fox’s DVD construction. Lots of still proofs were tucked away from those shooting days and have dribbled out since. You wonder what more might be hidden in drawers and safe deposit boxes. The disc documentary, Marilyn: The Final Days, includes interviews with those few left to be consulted. Funny how doctors on camera arenever among those that prescribed hazardous drugs. One with an open collar and skin like a lizard handbag says MM must have gotten all her lethal stuff from somewhere over the border. That’s probably true enough. Or maybe Wally Reid’sprimary care still had a shingle out. Monroe supposedly made a deal with Fox to come back and finish Something’s Got To Give just days ahead of fateful 8/5/62, with director Jean Negulesco to replace George Cukor. Negulesco’s results could not have been any more dispirited than what Cukor had been getting. Something’s Got To Give was really better off not finishing. It serves us well enough as a forlorn document of a studio and star breaking last straws together.

Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra 1970

The Rat Pack was a group of actors originally centered on their leader, Humphrey Bogart. In the mid-1960s it was the name used by the press and the general public to refer to a later variation of the group, after Bogart's death in 1957, that called itself "the Summit" or "the Clan," featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop; they appeared together on stage and in films in the early 1960s, including the movies Ocean's 11, Sergeants 3, and Robin and the 7 Hoods (in the last film, Bing Crosby replaced Lawford). Sinatra, Martin, and Davis were regarded as the group's lead members.

Dino Mention In The WaPo!

by Always on Watch

As Columbus Day 2015 approached, Vincent J. Cannato, associate professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Boston and the author of American Passage: The History of Ellis Island, paid homage to our Dino in his opinion piece "How America became Italian":

...[After World War 2] while Italian Americans’ kitchens were changing the nation’s palate, their creativity was winning over the popular culture. Before the dawn of rock-and-roll, many of the singers who defined American music were Italian Americans: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Vic Damone, Tony Bennett, Perry Como and Louis Prima among them....
This paragraph appeared in the Sunday edition of the Washington Post of the WaPo — the most widely read edition of the newspaper all week long — so we Dino fans know that many readers took note of our Dino and his role in changing America for the better!

Rare Original Photo: Dean Martin "Dino" to Eddie Albert - $55 (commerce)

image 1

Photo has a heavy cardstock matting & back that are adhered together. The matting has staining & a few superficial tears, however, there is nothing that interferes with the handwritten note from 'Dino' 'To Eddie', 'Of course one of yours is missing, mine. _____ - '
The photo itself, has lost some of its original luster. A professional cleaning, should return it to excellent condition.

I believe it was taken on the set of 'The Dean Martin Show' during Season 1.22 February 17, 1966.
This photograph indeed was owned by Eddie Albert. When Mr. Albert passed away, his son Eddie Albert jr., acquired his father's belongings. Sadly, the following year, he too, passed on.
My late husband & I purchased this photo at the highly respected auction house, California Auctioneers, in Casitas Springs, CA. That particular auction featured hundreds of items which came from the estate of Eddie Albert jr.

Hai mươi năm ngày giỗ Dean Martin
Dean Martin 1917 - 1995 (DR)

2015 marked the 20 year anniversary of Dean Martin. He died after months of ill, right on Christmas Day 1995, at the age of 78 years old. When alive, Dean Martin celebrity in all three areas of film and television music. He has also been included in Time Magazine list of the 10 best crooner vocals of all time, based on the four rows of swiping question you release the text.

Dino Paul Crocetti real name, Dean Martin grew (Ohio) in an Italian immigrant family (native Abruzzo region, northeast of Rome), only progeny (of the third generation ) are fed by the school, speak fluent new America. Indoors, Dean Martin's parents taught me in Italian. Relive childhood, Dean Martin said that not until he came of age went to school, then that he was to have access to American English, but also at home, and said he only heard throughout are Italian.

Dean Martin quit school to work at age 15, he worked every job to make ends meet even the legal profession is not very much, such as smuggling, betting, gambling ... He came to New York in the early career in 1940, began to sing in pubs, but his talent a chance to shine only after World War II. Dean Martin on the professional stage career by acting, not by singing.

Along with Jerry Lewis clown king, he created (in 1946) but comedic performances. Inspiring people who came, the pair rose to fame through the TV show, and then signed a contract with Paramount in 1949. But success also raises dissension and internal conflict. The pair Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis broke up in 1956, ie exactly 10 years after they first appeared together on stage.

Once detached, separate launch a solo career, Dean Martin to continue acting and participating in TV show performances. He began singing and recording professionally quite late from 1953 onwards, he was then in 35 years. Government is also in this period that he acquainted with Frank Sinatra. Both joined the group (The Holmby Hills) Rat Pack, as Humphrey Bogart movie idol (along with his wife, movie star Lauren Bacall) advocated.

At first, the voice of Dean Martin is still overshadowed by the seniors in the profession, and often in comparison with gold Vocalist (The Voice) by Frank Sinatra. But since 1960 onwards, thanks to the title track You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You deduct from Friday alum (titled This Time I'm Swingin is') Dean Martin to find a way of expressing yourself toxic distinct originality.

So that the Dean Martin singing career really took off, in the three decades from 1953 to the mainland in 1983, he recorded about 600 songs (around 40 albums), is the most glorious period in the year 1960 and 1970. In 1964, at the movement of music have come from the British invasion of the US market dominance (called British Invasion), people mistakenly believe that the Beach Boys (the Americans) can appeal resistance withstands the British rock band. But no, the voice of Dean Martin (Everybody Loves Somebody song thanks) truly beat group The Beatles Fab Four out of the rankings, had to cede topped.

After years of continued success, Dean Martin officially retired from the mid-1980s, after the sudden death of his son by accident aircraft intestine. Two members of the Rat Pack Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and deliberately organized a round tour '' reunion '' across America (Together Again Tour), but Dean Martin appears only a few times, because he was not enthusiastic with their professional life. Health is increasingly deteriorating due to alcohol and tobacco, Dean Martin died in late 1995, after doctors diagnosed him with cancer of the lungs.

On vocals, it was suggested that Dean Martin copied the styles of Bing Crosby singing like crooner, Perry Como and Al Martino. But in fact, since he started to sing, Dean Martin singing borrows Harry Mills, vocalist of The Mills Brothers baritone (forerunner of The Four Kings of Harmony). Famous by Frank Sinatra singing rock rhythm letters, and Dean Martin hit by releasing the claw word sentences.

Dean Martin inspired by a deep attachment eggs of black American singer Harry Mills, smooth chest voice, every note is round, but become the buffer dots between two kings: one side crooner Nat King king Cole, a side of King of Rock Elvis The King. Although not mastered music theory, but both singers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are flexible style of expression, each of them (swing).

Frank Sinatra specialized narrow vibrato, feels he joked with the rhythm, and Dean Martin are back around with rhythm, promote attachment reduplicative forte on the length of the notes. Although both are famous in jazz vocal village, but Dean Martin has a knack, few see where Frank Sinatra: the wording fondling Latin music. Stage where Dean Martin recorded more songs are on the years 1962-1964, which culminated in the Italian Love Songs, French style and is set Dino Latino music. Crooner voice lyrical fascination, release the claw smooth Latin letters.

Once detached, separate launch a solo career, Dean Martin to continue acting and participating in TV show performances. He began singing and recording professionally quite late from 1953 onwards, he was then in 35 years. Government also during this period that Mr. acquainted with Frank Sinatra.
Two members of the Rat Pack Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and deliberately organized a round tour '' reunion '' across America (Together Again Tour), but Dean Martin appears only a few times, so he was not enthusiastic with their professional life.
Dean Martin inspired by a deep attachment eggs of black American singer Harry Mills, smooth chest voice, every note is round, but become the buffer dots between two kings: one side is the crooner Nat King of King Cole, a side of King of Rock Elvis The King.
Crooner voice lyrical fascination, release the claw smooth Latin word.

Jerry Lewis Listens to Dean Martin’s Music “All the Time– All of It– I Always Listen to My Partner’s Stuff”

Hey pallies, likes we interrupt our current series of Dino-devotion scribed by Mr. John McElwee to share this most marvelous moment of Dino-adulation that came our way via google Dino-'lerts.  From  Mr. Roger Friedman's self-tagged blog "Roger Friedman's SHOWBIZ 411 HOLLYWOOD TO THE HUDSON" comes his October 7 post, "Exclusive: Jerry Lewis Listens to Dean Martin’s Music “All the Time– All of It– I Always Listen to My Partner’s Stuff.”

It's a face-to-face interview that Friedman conducted with our most beloved Dino's most beloved partner Mr. Jerry Lewis backstage of the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens on October 6 after Mr. Lewis had shared a one hour interview with one of his former directors, Mr. Martin Scorsese. We are sharin' a brief  Dino-centric excerpt from Mr. Friedman's post that you can view in it's entirety by clickin' on the tag of this Dino-prose.

Roger quired Mr. Lewis 'bout "does he listen to Dean Martin’s music at all? Does he have a favorite song?"  Mr. Lewis' remarkable response is so so fabulously full of absolutely awesome adulation of our Dino that it warms our Dino-heart through and through and is bringin' us Dino-happiness beyond measure.  Likes, we just had to bring you this Dino-devotion as soon as possible!

We thanks Mr. Roger Friedman for askin' Mr. Jerry Lewis 'bout his passion for his partner's music and sharin' it at his beautiful blog.  Most of all, we thanks Mr. Lewis for so beautifully 'n boldly sharin' his ever-lastin' love for our most beloved Dino with the universe.  We are thrilled beyond thrilled to know Mr. Lewis' deepest of deep respect for our main man.   Dino-always, ever, and only, DMP

by Roger Friedman - October 7, 2015

After the the one hour talk, I was backstage with Scorsese and Lewis, who will turn 90 in March 2016. Jerry is sharper than a tack, hilariously funny, and dead serious when he comes to filmmaking. We covered a lot of subjects in a short time, but two things stuck out.

One: does he listen to Dean Martin’s music at all? Does he have a favorite song? Martin and Lewis were one of the most famous comedy teams in history until they broke up in 1956. They didn’t speak for years but finally made up in 1989, a few years before Martin’s death in 1995.

Jerry jumped right in at the question: “All the time. Oh yeah.” A favorite song? “All of it. I hear it all. I have it on two Bose units in my home, in my car, in my office.” Does it make him feel good? “Yes, but it’s a tough feeling because I wish he was here.” I tell him what a fan of I was of Dean Martin. Jerry was emphatic: “You should be. Everyone was a fan of my partner’s.”

The gallery of those who harbored unrequited love for Dean is an extensive one.

Hey pallies, likes we are once 'gin totally totally thrilled to be returnin' to 'nother in-the-Dino-know post from our Dino-diggin' pallie Mr. John Elwee at his self tagged blog "John McElwee's GREENBRIAR Picture Shows."  Likes this Dino-outin' John's not scribin' on a particular flick that our Dino starred in, but instead we are touchin'ly treated to incredible insights from Elwee's  pen accentin' our Dino's potent  persona.

To our way of thinkin' John is right on the nose when to states that our Dino "didn’t do needy"....makin' him awesomely attractive to both women and men.  The word that comes to mind as we read Elwee's  remarkable reflections on our one and only Dino is the Italian word...menefreghista...the word that Dino-biographer Nick Tosches used to describe our Dino's doesn't give a you-know-what attitude.

Likes to illustrate his perspective, John retells the story of the "spaghetti incident," where a frustrated Mr. Sinatra put a plate of pasta onto our our Dino's head durin' early in the Rat Pack Reunion Tour causin' our Dino to make a hasty exit.  McElwee also adds cool commentary on each of the Dino-poses that he shares and we knows youse will enjoy what he has to say.

Of all the Dino-focused entries that Mr. John McElwee has scribed so far, this one indeed swankly shows his awestruck adulation of our main man and it truly truly brings Dino-holics likes us such potent pleasure to find 'nother pallie who is likes totally totally completely completely sold out to our King of Cool...and not afraid to wear his Dino-devotion on his sleeve!

We supremely salute Mr. John McElwee for this perfect post showin' his ubber understandin' of our one and only Dino!  To checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.  Deeply In Dino, DMP

Dean Martin's Birthday Party

Amongst the annals of crowning understatement, "Dean Martin was not a people person" may be near the top. Jerry’s just written an entire book essentially lamenting the fact he never got a hug from Dean. The gallery of those who harbored unrequited love for Dean is an extensive one. Jerry did not dwell there alone. Along with the legions of women, there was Frank. His frustration with Dean’s aloof nature could unhinge poor Frank even at the advanced age of 73 --- when the infamous "spaghetti incident" brought the Rat Pack’s would-be reunion tour to an ignominious end. Seems Frank wanted Dean to join him after the evening show for a little pub-crawling, but Dean opted for his customary nightcap --- a teevee western. Frank’s pique was such that he snatched up Dean’s plate of pasta and dumped it on his head. Yes, that’s what I said --- emptied a plate of greasy, gooey Italian cuisine right on top of this seventy-one year-old man’s head. If that isn’t enough to make your skin crawl --- Yecch! Anyway, it was splitsville for Dean the very next day, and ever-ready Liza Minnelli picked up the slack to bring the tour to its triumphant finish line.

Ever notice how most people will say they prefer Dean over Jerry? I’ve heard it time and again. I’ve also heard people say they prefer Dean over Frank. What was the man’s secret? Just this, I suspect --- the guy didn’t do needy. Never. Not with anybody. And most of us think that’s cool. Because we don’t want to be needy either. A pox on Jerry and his unleashed emotion on those telethons! Damn that childish Frank and his spaghetti assault on this cool, unflappable man. Yes, I suspect we’d all like to be a little more like Dean. Not all the way, mind you, because by every account, his loner habits did not necessarily make for a happy life, particularly toward the end, but who wouldn’t want that calm exterior? They say that even with spaghetti matting in his hair, Dean just got up calmly, walked into the bathroom, and waited for a penitent Frank to leave his hotel suite. The only thing that seems to have really impacted on Dean was his son’s tragic death during a jet-training flight in 1987. That story is just too sad to recount here, but there is a good bio of Dean that tells of this and much more
HERE.

This first shot of a pajama-clad Dean was taken between set-ups for MGM’s Ada, a pretty much forgotten 1961 meller he did with Susan Hayward (we’d still like to see a nice DVD of it, though). Note the open lid on his phonograph --- Capitol was Dean’s label at the time, and judging from that album jacket near his left foot, it looks as though he’s spinning his own hit-laden This Time I’m Swingin’ platter. As for these other two shots from Dean’s forty-third birthday celebration, just what is that present he’s just opened? --- the one Shirley MacClaine’s reacting to? I’ve looked at it for the last several minutes and I can’t figure it out. Probably a gag gift as they all seem most amused. That uniform
Elvis
wears is not Government Issue, by the way. He’s just dressed out for G.I. Blues, his first post-service musical for producer Hal Wallis, who’s standing next to Dean on the left. I guess it was inevitable that Dean’s birthday cake would have a golf course motif, just as it’s reasonable to assume that Elvis is not there at Dean’s invitation. All three of the players were working for Wallis at the time (1960). Dean and Shirley were in the midst of a particularly tepid comedy, All In A Night’s Work, and according to that bio, Elvis gave out with a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" for the honored celebrant. By all accounts, Dean couldn’t abide Presley’s music, and only later grew more tolerant of the upstart singer. Rock artists were like poison oak to Rat Packers, but every now and then, they had to make nice for the sake of mutual employers (even Frank was obliged to throw a "Welcome Home" TV special for Elvis when he returned from his Army hitch). Once again, we must assume that the cake was barely, if at all, eaten over the course of that afternoon, and no doubt some of the crew guys working late were the ones left to finish it off.
