Kiss Me, Stupid (1964)

Kiss Me, Stupid is a 1964 American comedy film produced and directed by Billy Wilder and starring Dean Martin, Kim Novak, and Ray Walston.

The screenplay by Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is based on the play L'ora della fantasia (The Dazzling Hour) by Anna Bonacci, which had inspired Wife For a Night (Moglie per una notte, 1952), an Italian film starring Gina Lollobrigida. The comic song lyrics were written by Ira Gershwin, using some of George Gershwin's unpublished melodies.

While driving his Dual-Ghia from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, lecherous, heavy-drinking pop singer Dino (Dean Martin) is forced to detour through Climax, Nevada. There he meets the amateur songwriting team of Barney Millsap (Cliff Osmond), a gas station attendant, and piano teacher Orville J. Spooner (Ray Walston), a man easily given to jealousy. Hoping to interest Dino in their songs, Barney disables the "Italian" sports car and tells Dino he will need to remain in town until new parts arrive from Milan. (Dual-Ghia was actually an American marque, mating a Dodge frame, drivetrain, and engine with Italian coachwork.)

Orville invites Dino to stay with him and wife Zelda (Felicia Farr), but becomes concerned when he learns the singer needs to have sex every night to avoid awakening with a headache. Anxious to accommodate Dino but safeguard his marriage, Orville provokes an argument with his wife that leads to Zelda fleeing in tears. He and Barney then arrange for Polly the Pistol (Kim Novak), a waitress and prostitute at a saloon on the edge of town called the Belly Button, to pose as Orville's wife and satisfy Dino.

That evening after the three have dinner, Orville plays his tunes for Dino on the piano and Polly requests a particular song. It is one she knows he wrote for his wife when trying to persuade her to marry him. Doing so, Orville gets lost in emotion, as does Polly, who has fallen a little for the dream of a domestic life that she doesn't have. Under the influence of wine and song, Orville starts thinking of Polly as his wife and tosses Dino out. He then spends the night with Polly.

Dino seeks shelter at the Belly Button, where Zelda earlier had gone to drown her sorrows. When she became drunk and rowdy, the manager deposited her in Polly's trailer to sleep. Hearing about the talents of Polly the Pistol and declaring himself eager "to shoot it out with her," Dino goes to the trailer and finds Zelda there and mistakes her for Polly. A longtime fan, she succumbs to Dino's charms and allows him to seduce her, persuading him how perfect Orville's song would be for him at the same time.

Zelda meets Polly the next morning and figures out the trick Orville played on her. She gives Dino's money to Polly, who needs it to leave Climax and start a new life.

A few nights later, Orville is distraught knowing that Zelda intends to divorce him. Suddenly he hears Dino singing one of his songs on coast-to-coast television. He is at a total loss as to how this could have happened. He wants an explanation, but Zelda simply orders him: "Kiss me, stupid."

Just Like Dad

I’ll be 37 when my son comes into this world on, or around July 21st.  Even though I won’t be what’s considered an older dad, I wonder if my son Anderson will have a similar prayer.  I loved my dad more than anyone will ever know.  He was my father, my teacher, my mentor, my hero.  I looked up to him.  I love Dean Martin because of him, I love the Yankees because of him, I love boxing because of him, and I’d like to think I’m a pretty decent guy because of him.

 'Silver Skies': Film Review

 by John DeFore

Courtesy of Roar Productions

Makes the Marigold Hotel look like Chekhov.

Underexposed veteran actors play residents of a doomed apartment complex.
A picture espousing the humane treatment of retirees that isn't able to practice what it preaches, Rosemary Rodriguez's Silver Skies offers a half-dozen or so Hollywood vets one more turn in the spotlight only to deliver a vehicle dumber than most of the duds they've endured in their post-stardom years. Hackneyed and unconvincing on almost every front, it is best suited for a daytime-cable slot — where one hopes it won't be inflicted on too many senior-center rec rooms.

George Hamilton may be the dapper figurehead of this ensemble as Phil, a Dean Martin-obsessed guy starting to lose his grip on the present, but fellow thesps like Barbara Bain get plenty of their own screen time in a film with enough subplots for a Love Boat two-fer. Most weave around a central conflict as old as any actor seen here: The apartment complex where all these low-income folks live is being turned into condos, and only those who can raise over a half-million dollars to buy in will be able to stay.

Chockablock with scenes that no halfway-critical viewer will believe, the picture doesn't make up for its dubious action with jokes — unless you count the "eight is enough" groaner delivered in a Dick Van Patten cameo. Some castmembers get dealt a better hand than others in Rodriguez's script — Mariette Hartley and Jack McGee go multiple scenes at a time without you feeling embarrassed for them — but when the director hands out dramatic solo moments in which actors like Hamilton and Valerie Perrine are meant to show they've still got chops, nobody walks away looking good.

A happy ending rolls in around the 80-minute mark, and a merciful film would end there. But Rodriguez invents an unnecessary final complication, keeping viewers who haven't nodded off captive for another quarter-hour.

SILVER SKIES on DVD, Amazon and iTunes April 4th – Stars George Hamilton and Valerie Perrine

By Tom Stockman | April 2, 2017

silverskies3

With humor and compassion, SILVER SKIES chronicles the unexpected developments that occur when a group of eccentric seniors have their lives turned upside down by the sale of their beloved apartment complex. A refreshingly original story about getting older and trying to hold tight to the American Dream, the film features a cast of much-loved screen icons: George Hamilton, Valerie Perrine, Barbara Bain, Jack McGee, Alex Rocco, Mariette Hartley, Jack Betts, and Howard Hesseman. Far from playing their usual roles, however, the actors fully inhabit characters of real complexity: Long-time pals Phil and Nick (Hamilton and McGee) tenderly face Phil’s descent into Alzheimer’s (including episodes in which Phil delusionally believes he’s Dean Martin); Ethel (a still-sexy Perrine) and Frank (Rocco) find that friendship trumps love; Harriet (Hartley) discovers that life is good when you let down your guard; and Eve (Bain) feistily demonstrates that age is no impediment when it comes to defending what’s right. Now in their twilight years, facing the unknown, these old-timer underdogs won’t yield without a fight.

.....we've got some boozy Dean Martin on the ol' turntable.

Hey pallies, likes man-o-man dudes are we over the top with the deepest of Dino-delight or what?
Through the marvelous magic of our pallies at Twingly Advanced Blog Search we recently landed at the new-to-ilovedinomartin awesome al-b-um and cool cocktail pad, "Vinyl In The Valley -
Flipping records and pouring cocktails since 2000-something!"  Hosted by a pallie who tags himelf Ned Tugent (we're guessin' a play on rocker Ted Nugent), "Tugent" introduces his swingin' site with these thoughts..."There's certain advantages to being an alcoholic shut-in! So kick back and relax... the turntable's on and the tiki bar is open!"

Likes in the month of March, "Ned" did a couple of Dino-centric posts and we are goin' to share 'em in order of their postin.'  This particular post accents "Tugent's"  randiest of randy review of our beloved Dino's amazin' al-b-um,"THE DOOR IS STILL OPEN TO MY HEART."  This reviewer shares his own insights into the style and songs on this al-b-um, some thrillin' 'n some chillin', but ends up potently proclaimin', "Honestly, there's not a bad song in the bunch!  Its a great LP for gathering around the record player, drink in hand and washing down the problems and realities of the working week."

We devotedly digs this pallies scribin' style and it is clear that he "gets Martin!"  And, what's not to like of this guy's includin' that swankly stellar still of our delightful Dino drink in hand, while readin' through the tome, "The Drinking Man's Diet."  We absolutely applaud this "Ned" pallies free and easily way of puttin' words to page....we would supremely surmise that he takes his lessons from none other then our King of Cool.

The door is still open to my heart...

Dean Martin - "The Door Is Still Open To My Heart" (1964) - Reprise Records

Hello Friends,

Its a boozy Saturday night here on Vinyl in the Valley and we've got some boozy Dean Martin on the ol' turntable.  Martinis be flowin'.

In the 50's and 60's, Dino had a sort of alter-ego in Dean "Tex" Martin where he would get away from the American Songbook-type standards and would instead croon some cowpoke-style tunes.

Now, this isn't stripped-down, shit-kickin', rural honky tonk music, but very lush, over-produced and orchestrated easy listening/lounge music.  The stuff your parents and/or grandparents (depending on your age) would put on their living room console turntables on a Saturday night while mixing highballs or pitchers of watered-down martinis.

And watered-down is a pretty apt description of what's going on.

Not that its a bad record, by any means!  Sure its big on sentiment, but its all very safe, very saccharine, very uninspired.

Three songs from this record-- "I'm Gonna Change Everything", the Sheb Wooley-penned (yes, that Sheb Wooley) "The Middle of the Night is My Cryin' Time" & "My Sugar's Gone"-- were directly lifted Dean's 1963 record entitled Dean "Tex" Martin Rides Again.  #lazy.

The great title track and the song, "You're Nobody Until Somebody Loves You" were pretty big hits for Martin.  Other highlights include the cha-cha-shuffle of "In The Misty Moonlight" (originally written by Cindy Walker), the fantastically lush "Every Minute, Every Hour", the sappy "Always Together", the muted guitar work on "Take Me" and the epic kiss-off of a closer "So Long Baby".

Honestly, there's not a bad song in the bunch!  Its a great LP for gathering around the record player, drink in hand and washing down the problems and realities of the working week.  There's no due dates, or bills due, or tax forms, or clients, or traffic jams or yelling bosses.  Just you, your girl, a dimly-lit tiki bar and a half-empty bottle of rye whiskey!

RATING:  4 so long baby's you better go now out of 5

Watch Christopher Walken With Dean Martin And Jerry Lewis In One Of His Earliest TV Appearances
By James McClure  |  Mar 31, 2017

Watch Christopher Walken With Dean Martin And Jerry Lewis In One Of His Earliest TV Appearances

Christopher Walken - who turns 74 today - rose to fame in the 1970s after winning an Academy Award for his portrayal of a Vietnam soldier in 'The Deer Hunter' (1978). But his acting career began decades earlier with a small role as a carnival-goer in a 1953 sketch with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Walken was a child actor still using his birth name, Ronald, when he was picked as one of two kids to appear alongside Martin and Lewis - one of the hit comedy duos of the day - on an episode of 'The Colgate Comedy Hour' (1950-55). The sketch was set in a penny arcade where Lewis (playing Martin's son) wreaked havoc by destroying games, harassing patrons and even taking a police officer hostage at gunpoint.

The 10-year-old Walken had a brief, non-speaking role as a kid who showed up Lewis at an arm-wrestling game. And he's barely recognizable with his light hair and goofy grin. If you don't want to watch the whole sketch, you can check out Walken reminiscing about his bit role in this 2014 interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show.

And if you want to watch the whole thing, here it is. (Note that Walken is the second of the two kids in the sketch - enjoy!).

The Duke, the drunk, and the rock 'n' roll star

Hey pallies, likes for some reasons dude we ain't been gettin' lots of Dino-action from bein' part of google's Dino-'lerts, but every so often the pallies at google leads us to the purest of pure, delightful of delightful Dino-gold!  Likes recently we happened 'pon two great Dino-finds via google and this is the first of 'em.  From the pallies at the 'net pad of  the Arizona Daily Sun comes wise words written by Northern Arizona University professor of Forestry Dr. Bruce E. Fox on one of our Dino's biggest of big screen epics.

From the title of the post, which we are also usin' to tag this Dino-gram, and what immediately caught our Dino-attentionado, "The Duke, the drunk, and the rock 'n' roll star," we're guessin' that all youse Dino-holics are coolly crystal clear 'bout which Dino-flick Fox is referrin' to.  Likes, you guessed it pallies...."Rio Bravo."  Likes from readin' the potent prose, it appears that NAU has a film series goin' and the recent fantastic feature was said silver screen classic.

The brief, but powerfully potent prose that the professor provides on our most beloved Dino is right on the ol' Dino-mark.  Fox's  perfect prose shares these Dino-truths: "Martin convincingly plays a drunk, a man who self-medicates with alcohol to dull the pain of a love affair gone wrong. Although played straight, this role contains elements of later Martin characters — think of his Matt Helm tongue-in-cheek spy thrillers and his over-the-top drunk in his television variety shows from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s."

We find it incredibly intriguin' that Fox notices that our Dino's role as the Dude "contains elements of later Martin characters....as swingin' spyster Matt Helm and his television persona.  We will from now on always be lookin' for these essential elements when we view "Rio Bravo."  We thanks Dr. Bruce E. Fox for this remarkable review of "Rio Bravo" and we are pleased to know that it has been featured at Northern Arizona University, surely bringin' more of today's youthful students into the Dino-fold.  Likes to checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-gram.

The Duke, the drunk, and the rock 'n' roll star

Rio Bravo

John Wayne stars in "Rio Bravo," this week's offering in the NAU Film Series.

An aging — yet uncompromising — sheriff (John Wayne) must keep a cold-blooded murderer in jail until the circuit judge arrives. Unfortunately, the murderer’s ruthless brother, the richest and most powerful man in town, hires a pack of trained killers to free the prisoner.

The doggedly determined sheriff refuses to free his prisoner and with an unlikely band of assistants — a drunk deputy (Dean Martin), a hot-shot young gunslinger (Rick Nelson), a beautiful gambler and dancehall performer (Angie Dickinson), and a crippled jailor (Walter Brennan) — vows to hold out against the odds until the judge arrives.

As a western starring John Wayne, the overall outcome of good triumphing over evil is not really in doubt. But the path to the resolution is more complex than in many such films, incorporating some interesting — if not always totally convincing — character studies and interactions.

Wayne, famously nicknamed Duke, as Sheriff John T. Chance, plays — well, he plays John Wayne. He’s tough, straight talking, and determined to uphold the law.

Martin convincingly plays a drunk, a man who self-medicates with alcohol to dull the pain of a love affair gone wrong. Although played straight, this role contains elements of later Martin characters — think of his Matt Helm tongue-in-cheek spy thrillers and his over-the-top drunk in his television variety shows from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s.

Dickinson, in one of her first major film roles, hits the mark as the wronged woman who seeks independence. Ricky Nelson, also in one of his early film roles, is interesting as he moves to break out of his television and real-life teen heartthrob rock and roll star to a character with more depth. Walter Brennan, as the classic sidekick, serves as both a comedic foil and bearer of unpleasant truths.

The love interest that develops between Wayne’s Chance and Dickinson’s Feathers provides an opportunity for Wayne to add some subtly to his character, but look at how the 56-year-old Wayne interacts with the 27-year-old Dickinson.

Hawks and Wayne (well-known as a staunch conservative) consciously made the film as a rebuttal to 1952’s “High Noon”, starring Gary Cooper. Wayne (and many others) felt that “High Noon” was a thinly disguised anti-McCarthyism film and “Rio Bravo” was their response to more traditional values associated with Westerns, and indeed with the United States.

The film won two Golden Globes: Most Promising Newcomer (Female) for Dickinson (1960) and Most Promising Newcomer (Male) for Nelson (1959). It has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating and the American Film Institute nominated the film as one of its Top 10 westerns.

“Rio Bravo” was remade in 1966 as “El Dorado” with a second re-make (but MUCH farther from the original story) as “Rio Lobo” in 1970. Wayne and Martin teamed up again as brothers in “The Sons of Katie Elder” in 1965.

For fans of Westerns, “Rio Bravo” may serve as a great “comfort film” — familiar and easy to enjoy. However, Wayne demonstrates more depth of character in his films “The Searchers” and even “Stagecoach,” and other westerns, such as “High Noon”, offer more intriguing story lines. But for an enjoyable movie evening, “Rio Bravo” will serve you well.

On This Date In Dino-history: April 2, 1958

Hey pallies,  likes tomorrow we'd  be sharin' the anniversary of yet 'nother incredibly important impactin' incident  in the life, times, and the teachin's of our most beloved Dino....but tomorrow is our bestest of best Dino-bro Danny-o turn at Dino-bat, so we are sharin' this a wee day early...and likes we thinks better early then late!    This particular date remarkably reflects on our Dino as teacher of wisdom extraordinaire!   More on that below.  First, let us note that likes it was on April 2,  in the year of our Dino 1958 that one of our great great man's greatest big screen efforts opened to absolutely  amazin'ly  awesome acclaim.

It was on this date that the war epic, "The Young Lions," opened to giganticly  great  great reviews.  The flick was based on an Irwin Shaw novel, and it also starred big screen heavy weights Mr. Marlon Brando and Mr.  Montgomery Clift.  Our Dino's role as Michael Whiteacre was huge in establishin' him as tour de force on the big screen givin' him the respect that he so so richly deserved.  It was this remarkable role that established him as a serious  actor and opened many doors for him in the future includin' what many consider his greatest screen appearance as the Dude in "Rio Bravo."

In honor and remembrance of this important date in Dino-history, we share with you a copy of an original publicity poster, a purely powerful pix of our Dino on the set with Mr. Marlon Brando,  and a clip from the film that features our Dino doin' a little croonin' and.........

What we are most psyched to share is part of a great 1983 filmed  interview from a the Brittish  BBC documentary tagged, "Wine, Woman, and Song."  While we woulda encourages youse to view not only this clip in it's entirety as well as the other two portions 'cause it is simply pure in it's Dino-devotion, we wanna accent a short portion of this effort that features our most beloved Dino talkin' 'bout gettin' the role in "The Young Lions."

Likes we couldn't remember for sure which Dino-interviews contained his remarkable retellin', but likes  as we had gone to youtube to search, we gotta 'fess up that likes we indeed felt very much directed by our Dino to this clip without much effort at all....a true trademark of our Dino's laid back style!  Startin' at 'bout 9:25 we hear our Dino's own words of how he got the part.....the famous story of Dino bein' willin' to take a huge pay cut to work with the likes of Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift.

To us this is story awesomely accents one of our Dino's hugest of huge teachins'....showin' all of us pallies the need to be willin' to make a current sacrifice in order to obtain fabulous fame and fortune in the future.  Our wise wise man knew that takin' this part woulda open even bigger doors in the future to work on the big screen....and, of course that is exactly what happened.  The pinnacle point of the proof of this Dino-wisdom was in 1970 when our King of Cool was paid 7 cool mil to star in the blockbuster "Airport."

Image that pallies....our Dino went from a mere 20 thou for "The Young Lions" to 7 mil for "Airport."  We stand in awe of our Dino's wisest of wise decision, and may we all continue to grow in our knowledge of and followin' of our our Dino's tremendous teachin's!  Truly truly wishes that we  were still able to sit at our Dino's feet and learn from his wealth of wisdom....the truest knower ever of life and how to live it!

On the  59th anniversary of the opennin' of "The Young Lions," let  Dino-holics everywhere celebrate our Dino's success not only with this flick, but with all the fame and fortune that went before him for the rest of his remarkable life!

We remain,

Yours in Dino,

Dino Martin Peters

April 2, 1958 Dean's second post-Martin and Lewis movie, "The Young Lions" opens to great reviews. Based on an Irwin Shaw novel, it also stars Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift.

Foolin' 'Round With Our Most Beloved Dino On April Fool's Day

Hey pallies, likes Happy April Fools Day dudes!  Likes we gotta 'fess up that likes it wasn't 'til a couple of April 1's 'go  that we began thinkin' of  accentin' this special day at ilovedinomartin.  It coulda be 'cause our Dino ain't never been a fool for nobody.

But likes, we knows that we were incredibly  inspired by our Dino two April Fools Day's 'go with the notion of searchin' youtube for a vid of our our most beloved Dino croonin' a tune with the term "fool" in it.  Likes we found more then one vid, but likes when we watched the one below, likes we knew for Dino-sure that this one was IT for sharin' on this first day of of the new month of April.

The croon is one that we don't remember seein' and hearin' our Dino sing before we discovered it, "Nobody But A Fool Would Love You."  It's the perfect for April Fools Day 'cause our King of Cool has so so much fun foolin' 'round as he sings.....just watch how our great man uses all of his body makin' funny 'specially beginnin' at 'bout 1:00.  Likes nobody has more fun then our swingin' swank Dino as he makes each and every song his Dino-own!

More Dino-delight from Mr. Liam Rodgers

Hey pallies, likes followin' yesterday's Dino-gram accentin' Mr. Liam Rodgers' new blog  "THIS QUIET MAN - 'All the Way," we decided to do a wee bit of reviewin' of Rodger's twitter posts to see how he might have expressed his Dino-adulation there.  Likes our search was rewarded with three deeply deeply Dino-centric tweets from the month of October 2016.

In the first terrific tweet on October 16, Rodgers, who as you will note tags himself "Duke @ Rodgey," shares a youtube vid of Dino speakin' of drinkin" and Rodgers refects, "You can only find advice as good as this after hauf 3 in the morning."

The next day, October 17,  Liam references our most beloved Dino as "Hero" with a coolly classic image of our Dino and the thought "Stay Drunk" from "Twelve Hangover Cures From Famous Heavy Drinkers."

Rodgers' October 28 post is that famous short gif from our Dino's performance in his last big screen effort, "Cannonball 2," where with ever present Kent cigarette in hand, Dino, instead of usin' a glass for a drink, simply lifts the bottle to his lips.

If we had any doubts 'bout Liam's Dino-delight these three twitter tweets leave no doubt in our minds of his awesome absolute adulation of our one, our only Dino.  And, likes we are sure that we will find many opportunities to feature his Dino-devotion on the the pages of our humble little ilovedinomartin blog.

We salute you Mr. Liam Rodgers and are powerfully pumped to see 'nother of today's youth deeply diggin' our main man.  Likes to checks these potent posts out in their original source, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.

“You’re not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on“

Dean Martin

This Quiet Man

Welcome

So here it is, my first dive into the shallow end of online blogging. I’m just toying around with this for now, so gimme some time to get to know it and then we can get on with getting to know me.

For the mean time, though, I guess an introduction is in order. My name’s Liam but on here I’ll probably go by my initials, L.B., because it’s got a nice ring to it, I suppose. What else about me? Well I’ve got a Law degree and I’m planning on becoming a Naval Officer, sooner or later.

The name for the blog was based on my favourite film, ‘The Quiet Man, and the tagline is title of my favourite song, ‘All the Way’ by Frank Sinatra. That’s pretty much what this blogs going to be about, me sharing the things that make up my life; from the films, music, food and clothes, to the little idiosyncrasies from a time gone by that I more often than not find along the way.

I’ll tend to stray away from politics and at most look at particular standout individuals that might happen to take my fancy. Same goes for religion too.

Well until I find something to talk about for real.

L.B.

On This Date In Dino-history: March 29, 1973

Hey pallies, likes  the month of March was a the month for our most beloved Dino to officially break the ties with two of his wives.   As reported a few days 'go, it was on March 23, 1949 that our Dino legally finished his marriage with wife numero uno, Elizabeth Anne McDonald.  And, today is the anniversary of his legal partin' of the ways with wife numero duo.  It was on  March 29 in 1973 that our great man officially ended his marriage to Jeanne Biegger.

Dino has originally sought the divorce from Jeanne after he met, while playin' in 'Vegas baby 'Vegas, 21 year old Miss Gail Renshaw. Our most beloved Dino was stunnin'ly 'n swankly smitten by Renshaw, then servin' as Miss USA.

After 'bout six months that amore cooled, and at the point that our Dino's divorce was finalized, Miss Catherine Mae Hawn, a 24 year old beauty parlor receptionist was waitin' in the wings.  Dino met Miss Hawn while makin' the scene clubbin' at that swankest of swank spot, The Candy Store Discotheque.   Our Dino was engaged to Miss Hawn, who would become the third  Mrs. Dean Martin less then a month after our Dino's divorce was finalized from Jeanne.

Likes we truly does find it so interestin' that on the same day of the month of March, but 20 years apart our Dino's richly romantically crooned "Return To Me" in 1953 and then in 1973 legally made it clear that  he was not returnin' to Jeanne.   Likes it is always, always so great to remind ourselves of all these important dates in the life and times of our most most beloved Dino!
