Does Anyone Care About Dean Martin?
Posted by Harold Goldberg on September 5, 2007
Dean Martin, the crooner, half of Martin and Lewis, Rat-Packer extraordinaire, had a resurgence some years ago when Nick Tosches wrote Dino, a deep, dark biography of the man who was once the highest paid entertainer in the country.
Yesterday, USA Today's Mike Snider reviewed three Dean Martin DVDs (click the links to see clips!):
The Young Lions - Dean "saved his career in this adaptation of Irwin Shaw's war novel."
Who Was That Lady - Tony Curtis and Dean "pose as FBI agents, which culminates in booze, blondes and humiliation."
Kiss Me, Stupid - This was originally Billy Wilder's "career nadir." But it's now a "well-regarded satire" that casts Martin as his public persona - "Dino."
I know there's a new CD which lauds Martin's singing, featuring everyone from Kevin Spacey (he can sing!) to Big Bad VooDoo Daddy. But do you still care about Dean Martin's movies?

Hey pallie, no disrespect meant, but what a question to ask. Does anyone still care, do I still care 'bout Dinoflicks? The answer is yes, 'cause there are millions of fans who still proclaim our Dino as their King of Cool and one way of gettin' to groove on our Dino is his wonderful work in films. If you click on my url you will go to a blog dedicated to Dino, his life, his times, his legacy, which still grows today. Never was, never will be anyone as cool as the King of Cool. Oh, to return to the days when Dino walked the earth!

People still care about Dino. They never stopped caring about him. The King of Cool isn't making some sort of comeback. He never faded away. Cool never dies. Sure he's more popular now than in years. Many new fans are discovering Dino, his style and attitude. I'm so sick of all these dudes dissin' Dino. They just don't understand what cool, hip, and randy look like. We know that Dino is the epitome of all of them. Hail Dino. Long Live Dinopalliedom. To live in the Dinoworld would be the greatest thing.
Hey pallie Keith, thanks so much for findin' and replyin' to this blog post. I'm with you dude...I as so tired of all this Dinodissin'...but as you say these nay sayers don't have a clue what true coolness, hippness and randiness is all 'bout. Long live our Master of Hip, our King of Cool, our Ruler of Randy!!!!
Hey pallies, good Dinonews, it turns out this Harold dude is on the same Dinopage as us! Here's the Dinoreply he left to our Dinopatter....
"thanks for all the dino love, guys. sorry it didn't come out that i'm a fan, too, one who really loved tosches' 'dino' (and even the old TV variety shows)."
How nice to know that he knows and loves our Dino like we do!
You bet they do, esp with some of those gorgeous Martin and Lewis films reissued on DVD. And blogs like yours, too! Keep up the good work, and so glad you mentioned "Kiss Me, Stupid."
I love Dean as an actor. The fact that they continue to get released on these fairly high profile releases prove that other people do as well...why can't people just accept that Dean is getting more and more respect and love each year. It has been a long time coming
Hey pallie Donna, thanks so much for droppin' by....indeed Dinoflicks will be 'round forever. Glad you enjoy the ol' Dinoblog!
Hey pallie Jeremy, thanks so much for your Dinothoughts. Indeed, our Dino is finally get his Dinodue...I'm so thrilled to be learnin' that many of today's youth have been found by our Dino and that means continued growth of the Dinolegacy!
