The Girl Who Loved Dean Martin by: Tejaswini Apte-Rahm“

2

The Girl Who Loved Dean Martin” is one of the stories in my short story collection, These Circuses That Sweep Through the Landscape (published by Aleph Book Company, India, December 2016). In the short time since the book was published, it has gotten some very good reviews – and many people have mentioned to me that of the ten stories they really liked the Dean Martin story in particular.

I also spoke about the story in an interview with the Hindustan Times – and the next thing I knew, the Ilovedinomartin blog had discovered the interview online, and blogged about the writer in far off India who had written a short story on their favourite topic! Reading that blog post by Dino Martin Peters was, for me, one of the happiest moments in my book’s journey, because this particular story is very special to me. One of the lines in that blog post really stuck in my mind – it was about ‘the international nature of Dino admiration’ – I hadn’t really thought of it that way – and then there was Danny G’s comment which observed that ‘Dino hits different chords in all of us’.

Well, I thought I would write about the chord that Dino has struck with me, and why I wrote a story called The Girl Who Loved Dean Martin.

The story

The story is set in London, and it’s about a girl who falls in love – true love - with Dean Martin. And she has a huge problem on her hands because when she discovers him, he has already been dead for many years. The story begins when, after her father has passed away, she is clearing out the attic. Late at night, in the clutter and dust of the attic, she discovers some old fashioned LP records and a record player.
She plays one of the records – it happens to be a Dean Martin one. She is completely overcome by his voice and finds that the more she listens, the more hopelessly she falls in love with him. What happens next? How does she cope with this impossible love? That’s what my story sets out to explore.

The inspiration

The inspiration for the story came from a very personal experience. Often when I listened to one of my favourite singers – in particular Dean Martin – there were moments when I felt such an overwhelming admiration, that I felt I did not have the vocabulary to describe that intense emotion; I could only call it ‘love’.

Now this intense feeling lasts only for a second or two, and then the moment passes. I got very interested in that intense, momentary experience – what should I call it, what words should I use to describe it?   And what if that experience wasn’t momentary, but sustained over a long period of time? What if it was not fan love, but real love? And so was born this story – it’s a ‘What If’ story that explores the difference between fan love and real love – and asks the question: ‘Who’s to say what the difference is?’ I leave it upto the reader to reach his or her own conclusion on what kind of love it is – I don’t push for a particular interpretation. But as the writer, the only way for me to write this story, was to
believe my character when she says it is true love, and to listen to her voice describing her experience of living with this impossible love.

Why Dean?

So often people have asked me why I chose to write about Dean Martin – well, there are two reasons. First of all, it had to be a singer from a past era, because I wanted to write a story about a girl whose love ignores the limitations of time.

Secondly, it had to be Dean Martin because – well, it was just so natural to write about a singer I love.

Here is an extract from the story, when the girl listens to Dean Martin for the first time, late at night in the attic:

“A loud crackling breaks through the dust and then melts into a deep voice, mellow like wood-smoked honey, gentle and heart-breaking as lips against skin… It is big band music riding the cracked grooves of the disc, harsh trumpets, scratchy violins and the tippity-tap of a light cymbal swinging the tune along deftly. My heart stills; I listen closely, straining to swallow each note of the masculine voice into my lungs and stomach.”

And then a few minutes later, as she is overwhelmed by his voice:

“…it is a stronger emotion than anything I have felt prior to this night of fine dust and dank attic; sitting on the wooden floor I am lifted up by the crackling, warped notes sung fifty years ago and my soul is in danger of being swept up and out through that murky window slanting towards the violet-black sky; I want to step off the roof and float and flail above the abyss, to twirl off into a frenzied dance, to sink to the floor and sob with my face in the rough grained planks, to have the life snuffed out of me, to go up in a smudge of smoke and merge into that languorous, persuasive voice that lazily sways the very air.”

Now this is strong stuff indeed, in the way of emotions. And the only way to write it, was to channel my own emotions towards Dean Martin’s voice, and then take it up several notches higher to create those dramatic moments of first discovering his voice in the attic.

So what does my character do next? She starts reading as much as she can about Dean, collects his music, dreams of going to the Abruzzo coast in Italy because she discovers that his ancestors came from there. And she grapples with being misunderstood and lonely because of her strange love.

Her female colleagues at the office simply can’t understand why she is single: “They are curious, so curious, about why I have no man; of course, they wouldn’t understand if I said I do. I do not tell them that I am indeed in love, that I content myself with listening to his tones and timbres, that he has stolen my soul ever so stealthily via my ear canal, that it is the middle ear, cochlea and tympanum that have become the organs of love.” Perhaps I should stop there to avoid any spoilers as to what happens next!

Dean and me

Since I love Dean Martin’s voice myself (though not to the same extreme as the character in my story), the experience of writing the story was joyful as well as emotionally draining. I listened to a lot of Dean while writing and editing. At times I got so caught up in the dilemma  of my main character that I would get a little tearful because her one true love was so unattainable!

I also enjoyed doing some research into Dean Martin’s life – since my character is an expert on Dino, I had to try and be one too! In particular I really enjoyed reading Dean and Me: A Love Story by Jerry Lewis and James Kaplan, and Memories Are Made of This by his daughter Deana Martin. I found both books very moving, and a great read – not just for the purposes of thinking about my story, but also as a Dino fan.

Often Dean is the first soundtrack of my day, and it’s always a beautiful start to the morning – his voice makes the start of the day feel soothing and yet so full of possibilities. My husband is not a Dino fan and doesn’t necessarily understand my craze for his voice, but he nevertheless ends up listening to Dean again and again, because of me. And when I was away for a few weeks to promote my new book, he also ended up listening to Dean – because, he said, it made it seem as if I was still at home! For the launch of my short story collection a couple of months ago, he surprised me with a lovely present: a 10-CD box collection of Dean Martin’s songs. And inside he wrote: “To the girl who loves Dean Martin”. Needless to say, this beautiful gift brought a special kind of love to a very special occasion.*  *  *

Danny G's Special Dino-Amore Month Sunday Serenade with Dino: "Let Me Love You Tonight"

Let me love you tonight
Let me tell you how much I adore all your charms
Though you leave me tomorrow for this night we'll borrow a love song

Let me love you tonight
Let me thrill to the touch of your sheltering arms
Til the scent of the roses caresses and closes your eyes

Let me kiss you tonight
While the stars in the sky give a heavenly light
So when love is an ember my heart will remember this sight
Live a lifetime of love in a moment holding me tight
Then forget me darling only
Let me love you tonight

Live a lifetime of love in a moment holding me tight
Then forget me darling only
Let me love you tonight
Let me love you tonight
Let me love you tonight

Joe Shmo: I'm 15 and only listen to Dean.

Hey pallies, likes postin' Deanager Richard L. Sykes powerfully poetic prose in huge homage  of Dino-amore month , we remembered that we had shared 'nother touchin' testimony some time ago that we found on youtube of 'nother of today's youth who is totally totally sold out to our Dino....indeed one we can absolutely awesomely  say is a hard core Deanager.  His youtube tag is "Joe Shmo" and he left a youtube comment below (on that classic of classic vid of our Dino croonin' "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" from the Dinoshow).... so so proudly  professin' his deepest of deep and purest of pure devotion to our most beloved Dino.  Youse can locate our original May 13, 2013 post  HERE.

It is so so extemely refreshin' to find someone of "Joe Shmo's" youth.....a mere 15 years old at the time of his testimony 'bout four years ago....so so right on the  Dino-mark.  And, pallies, the Dino-pix that Joe has used to groovily  grace his google account is indeed a very radically, really rugged pix of our regal man.....one that we wonder the history of it.

Back in the swingin' '70's while talkin' to the press 'bout creatin' a new golf course in Cali, our Dino swankly spoke of his deepest desire "to put the accent on youth" for the membership of this new small ball in the round hole project.  And, of course we knows that our Dino powerfully "put the accent on youth" in his choices of female amores beginnin' with 21 year old  Miss Gail Renshaw in October '69, 'long with wife numero tres, 20 somethin'  Miss Cathy Mae Hawn, and nineteen  year old Miss Andre Boyer in '77....among many many more.

Indeed it was our Dino who coined the term "Deanager" and without a doubt he deeply dug that absolutely awesome adulation that the youth of the '60s and '70s gloriously gave him.  So, we are without a doubt we totally trusts that our most beloved Dino woulda be proudly pleased to know that the youth of today, likes Mr. Richard L. Sykes and Mr. Joe Shmo" were hugely hip to him as well!!!!!

Kudos, kudos, and more kudos to Deanager "Joe" for makin' his amazin'  adulation of only our Dino so so proudly proclaimed to the wider Dino-world.  As we approach the closin' days of Dino-amore month, it  makes us so so potently  pysched to see 'nother of today's youth accentin' our most beloved Dino as we spoke 'bove of our Dino so boldly wantin' "to put the accent on youth" himself.  To checks out Joe's   youtube page, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-gram.

Likes , we can't help but also post the most classic of classic youtube vid of our most beloved Dino croonin' his numero uno signature croon, "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" from the Dino'show includin' Greg Garrison's tesimonial that he "just loved this guy"...and of course that "guy" is our one and only Dino.  And, we likes totally digs that Greg goes on to say that when he and our Dino had was a "love affair for 35 years.  Indeed, what all us sold-out-only-to-Dino pallies have is a love affair with our most beloved Dino!  And likes pallies, this is the particular youtube vid where you can find Joe's coolest of cool comment on bein' deeply devoted to our main man. Likes we continue to proudly celebrate our collective  love affair with our King of Cool!

We remain,

Yours in Dino,

Dino Martin Peters

I'm 15 and only listen to Dean. He is the only music I have in the car, in the house, or on my iPod. Today's music is garbage. It makes me sick. Wish I was born 60 years earlier

Richard L. Sykes:I remember when I first really started to love Dino....

Hey pallies, likes  so so much of Dino-amore month has slipped by without sharin' the tons and tons of Dino-amore posts that we had hoped to share, but likes in the closin' days of this marvelous month of Dino-lovin' we are coolly comforted to know in the depths of our Dino-hearts  that each and everyday is a day to devote to deeper and deeper amore of our one and only Dino!!!!

But, with the days that we have left, we do indeed wanna share a least a few excellent examples of the billions and billions of Dino-holics of all ages all stages and from ever corner of the known Dino-world.   Likes today we wanna once 'gain share a post that was first shared  HERE on October 2, 2O12.  It's from, at the time, a real Deanager collegiate a young dude tagged Richard L. Sykes who was, and we trust still is, solidly sold out and solidly smitten by our most beloved Dino.

Mr. Sykes, at the time of writin' 'but his absolute adulation of our most beloved Dino, was a college freshman and  pontificated 'bout himself, "I'm Richard, I live in Village Suites and my major is undeclared. I'm from Roswell, Ga but i was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. I play guitar and I'm awesome."

Likes as you will once 'gain read below, Richard's devotion is deep, pure,  and likes as you will once 'gain read..."it wasn’t even a year ago", at the time of his touchin' testimonial,  when our Dino welcomed Sykes into his world and make him his pallie. This Dino-prose is quite short in scribin' but oh, so long in awe-struck-ness of our Dino!

A few of Richard's thoughts...

"I cannot even begin to describe how much i love this artist."

"He’s the best, the classiest, most talented man to have enver lived."

"The way he sang, the swave of his voice, the smooth classy feel to him brought chills to my spine."

"I remember at that moment, I wanted to be him, and ever since that, I have promised myself that I would transform myself to a man of his caliber."

"There are just aren’t enough words to describe it."

Mucho kudos for the mucho love that Richard L. Sykes has for our most beloved Dino. How stellar to have this nouveau hipster so so bold in openin'ly announcin' his passion for our King of Cool in such a supremely Dino-devoted way.  We loves to once 'gain share Sykes Dino-devotion 'cause it speaks wonderfully well 'bout 'nother of today's youth who has fallin' head over heels in amore of our great great man.

To view Richard's patter in it's original format, likes clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.

We remain,

Yours in Dino,

Dean “Dino” Martin: The King of Cool

Dean “Dino” Martin

I cannot even begin to describe how much i love this artist. He’s the best, the classiest, most talented man to have enver lived. Okay that might be opionated slightly but I think many would agree that Martin is a class act. I remember when I first really started to love Dino, it wasn’t even a year ago when I clicked on a video posted on my blog. The video was of the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin) playing at a gig with Ed Sulliven. The way he sang, the swave of his voice, the smooth classy feel to him brought chills to my spine. I remember at that moment, I wanted to be him, and ever since that, I have promised myself that I would transform myself to a man of his caliber. There are just aren’t enough words to describe it.

Man...Dino SURELY knew how to set the mood & he SURELY knew how to speak from the heart!

Hey pals...I'm thinkin'...if youse maybe still have yet to find love...durin' this VERY special month... & may be wonderin' exactly what to do...I have a suggestion.

PUT THIS SERENADE ON REPEAT & THROW OPEN THE WINDOWS!!! Hahaha!!!

That's ALL youse needs to do, mi love seekin' amici!

Who could resist Dino croonin' a la French style?! Ha!

Well pals...that's my advice.

Spread some love into the air & keep an open heart.

We never know what life will throw at us tomorrow.

Romance maybe??? Haha!!

Enjoy, pals!

Hold me close and hold me fast
The magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose
When you kiss me heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see la vie en rose
When you press me to your heart
I'm in a world apart a world where roses bloom
And when you speak angels sing from above
Every day's words seem to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be la vie en rose
La la la la
De de de de
Every day's words seem to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be la vie en rose

My someplace is here

If I had it in my power
I'd arrange for every girl to have your charms
Then every minute, every hour
Every boy would find what I found in your arms

Everybody loves somebody sometime
And although my dream was overdue
Your love made it well worth waiting
For someone like you

Cool Dino-Amore Day Thoughts...

Checks out this COOL commentary I stumbled upon in today's local paper, pals...

Purcell Commentary: Where has all the romance gone

When I was a boy, my mother loved listening to American crooners on our old wooden stereo console - Dean Martin was her favorite.
Though I hated his "old people" music as I kid, I listen to it frequently on satellite radio when I'm driving my truck.

Here's why: Dino celebrated romance, "a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love," says Dictionary.com.
And if modern music is the measure, romance is dead.
I point to Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 list.
Last week's No. 1 hit was "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran. His song is popular, no doubt, because of its eloquent lyrics:
I'm in love with the shape of you
We push and pull like a magnet do
Although my heart is falling too
I'm in love with your body
And last night you were in my room
And now my bedsheets smell like you...
No. 2 on the charts was "Bad and Boujee" by American hip hop group Migos. Many of the lyrics for the song are unpublishable in a family newspaper, but, with edits in parentheses, these lines will do:
(Fornicating) on your (derogatory term for a woman that sounds like witch) she a (prostitute, prostitute, prostitute, prostitute)
Cookin' up dope in the crockpot, (pot)...
Ah, modern romance. Things sure have changed since Dino dropped off the charts.
Whereas today's top hits celebrate human nature at its most base, Dino's music spoke to the heart.
Consider the lyrics to "Amore," which means "love" in Italian:
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That's amore
When the world seems to shine like you've had too much wine
That's amore
In 1964, when The Beatles' new sound made them the most popular band on Earth, Dino knocked "Hard Day's Night" out of the top spot on the charts. He did so with "Everybody Loves Somebody," an old-fashioned song that still resonates with all age groups:
Everybody loves somebody sometime
Everybody falls in love somehow
Something in your kiss just told me
That sometime is now
Whereas many of today's hit songs are vulgar and cynical, Dino's songs celebrate the subtle dance of the spirit between a man and a woman - the magic that occurs when two complementary natures collide.
Dino's songs celebrate mystery - the deep interest and curiosity a man holds for a woman and a woman for a man.
They celebrate optimism - the hope that one day a special person will enter your life and sweep you off your feet, a person you will love forever.
The simple, intense lyrics of his song "Sway" sum up this longing well:
Other dancers may be on the floor
Dear, but my eyes will see only you
Only you have the magic technique
When we sway I go weak
I know Dino had his peccadilloes in his personal life, but his music remains untainted. With every passing year, as coarseness seeps into our culture a little more, his songs hold more power over me. Their sweetness and respectfulness uplift me.
We need to get back to that spirit - the spirit of romance. I can't think of a better day to do so than Valentine's Day.
All we need to do is study the older couples who attend the annual Dean Martin Festival in Steubenville, Ohio, Dino's hometown.
As the Dean Martin impersonator takes the stage - a fellow so convincing you think the old crooner is there in the flesh - they saunter to the front of the stage holding hands. They begin to sway with a sweetness and easiness that couples knew long ago.
When there was romance.
