The Groovy, Turned On, Transformed Dino: Dean Martin & Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Hey, Good Lookin' 9/24/70

Hey pallies, likes we here at ilovedinomartin have recently spent a goodly number of days sharin' the lovin' relationship that freely formed 'tween our most beloved Dino and Miss Gail Renshaw after that transformational   evenin' encounter our Dino had with Miss Renshaw when they met to have a publicity pose snapped in our Dino's playground 'Vegas baby 'Vegas on the evenin' of October 13, 1969.   Likes obviously our Dino was swankly smitten with Miss Gail 'pon meetin' her and the  amazin' amore 'tween our Dino and Miss Renshaw beautifully blossomed likes over night.  As we have stated before, we were really hopin' that the relationship woulda been long term as the potent poses of our Dino and Miss Gail show our Dino to be a very happy man with his new lady friend by his side.

Even though thin's didn't work out between our Dino and Miss Renshaw in the long run, we would offer that our Dino's life, times, and teachin's were abundantly absolutely altered by our Dino sayin' goodbye to wife numero duo Miss Jeanne and hello to 21 year old Miss USA, Miss Gail Renshaw.
As we have shared before and as noted in a recent post shared HERE, our Dino's professional persona of supremely stunnin' swinger was absolutely, awesomely adopted as his personal persona as well.

Likes, instead of bein' home for supper every night, our Dino was now out clubbin', makin' the scene at such hipster  haunts as the The Candy Store Discotheque.  Our great great man more and more often wore the mod fashions of the '70's.  And, though our Dino's hair never got as long as his boypallies Dino Jr. and Ricci, he, like Dino Jr., changed his hair color and grew it longer on the sides.  These cooler then cool changes can be best viewed by watchin' clips of the Dino-show 'specially from 1970 on.

Recently, we once 'gain came 'cross an excellent example of our most beloved Dino's transformation while gazin' at a youtube vid clip from an episode of the Dean Martin Variety Show that first aired on September 24, 1970.  In this cool classy clip our Dino is hangin' with guests Kenny Rogers & the First Edition.  When Rogers invited our Dino to sing with him and his group, Dino sez, "I'd loved to, but I don't know if I can keep up with you, you know the generation gap there."  Kenny sez they can bridge that generation gap, and Dino makes funny sayin' that his way woulda be to "Burn all the twin beds."  Rogers suggests that they simply "let it all  hang out," to which our Dino replies "gravy" when of course he means groovy.  Makin' funny 'gain, our Dino sezs "what ever turns you in," when, of course he means whatever turns you on.

Then the Dino-magic begins as they together sing "Hey Good Lookin'."  There's our Dino lookin' totally totally "groovy"....totally totally  "turned on" with his ever present Kent Cigarette in hand,  his mod mod fashions...bright blue sports coat, opened neck bright red shirt, and checkered, black and white pants, longish hair and usin' his whole body supremely swingin' to the bouncy beat.  To our way of Dino-thinkin' this is a perfecto example of our Dino at the potently primo pinnacle of bein' the supremely swinger that he had always personified in his stage act.

Incredibly Intriguin' Images Of Our Dino and Miss Gail Renshaw

Hey pallies, likes today we continue our  accentin' of the awesomely amorous relationship that our Dino deeply deeply  developed with Miss Gail Renshaw 'pon meetin' the evenin' of October 13, 1969 in our Dino's playground, 'Vegas baby 'Vegas.  Likes this Dino-day we are pleasantly proudly pleased to share a goodly number of cooler then cool candid images of our main man and his new amore swankly snapped  at the 29th Annual Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur Golf Championship on January 22, 1970 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.

We deeply digs that Miss Renshaw made the swingin' scene at Pebble Beach, lovin'ly watchin' her lovin'  Dino play that game that he was perfectly passionate 'bout.  Likes what coulda be better then havin' the new found love of your life (Renshaw) watch you compete in playin' your long time love (golf).  Above is an image that always always brings such Dino-happiness to our hearts as we catch a groovy glimpse of our swingin' Dino and Miss Gail havin' such a special special time with each other.

A golf tournament is almost always a very public affair, so we are completely certain that those in attendance watched attentively as our Dino and Miss Gail made their deep delight in bein' together crystal clear.  We woulda bet that simply tons and tons of pixs were shot of our Dino and Miss Renshaw's time at Pebble Beach and we are most pleased to share a number of 'em with all youse Dino-holics by simply clickin' HERE to go the "gettyimage" web pad and see the awesomely assembled swingin' shots of our Dino and Miss Gail.  These particularly powerful poses all come from photographer Ron Galella's fantastic files.

Hey pallies, likes stop the presses dudes!  Likes we gots us some extra-Dino-special-devotion to shares with all youse Dino-philes this very Dino-day!  We gotta 'fess up that for a long long time now we have been hopin' to find out more details 'bout our most beloved Dino's amores particularly with youthful Miss Gail Renshaw and Miss Andre Boyer.

Likes yesterday we were thrilled to find a google Dino-'lert featurin' an article from the on-line presence of the Falls-Church News Press (Virginia)  'bout what happened to Miss Renshaw includin' some insightful details 'bout her relationship with our Dino. "Whatever became of Arlington’s most famous beauty queen?" is scribed by Mr. Charlie Clark for his column "Our Man in Arlington."

Mr. Clark's interview of Miss Renshaw answers a number of previously unanswered questions about her time with our Dino and we have included that portion of his column that focuses on their relationship.  As usual, to read the whole column, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram.

At the time Miss Renshaw was en route to London to compete to be Miss World (she won first runner-up). But there would soon be the small matter of her engagement to world-famous crooner Dean Martin, a married man 30 years her senior. It seemed a tale worth running down for an update.........

After an early marriage and divorce, she was 22 when she hit the national pageants and traveled to Las Vegas. (A promoter named Sidney Sussman told the Star he “discovered” her on a Potomac River cruise, but Renshaw told me he was just a nice friend trying to capitalize on her fame.)

Martin, then 53, was easing off the peak of his rat-pack popularity but still hosting his own TV show and selling millions of middle-brow records. He was also separating from Jeanne Biegger, the second of what would be three wives.

“I really wanted to meet his daughter Gail, herself a good singer,” Renshaw told me. Having seen Martin’s live show and chatted at a photo session, she went for a drink at Dino’s Den bar in Vegas’s Riviera Hotel. It wasn’t long before Martin asked her on a date. “Well, I have a chaperone,” Renshaw told him, but Martin’s daughter said she could fix that. Soon her chaperone was Dean Martin, and the next night his daughter was conveniently unavailable.

The two fell fast, and Martin’s daughter encouraged Renshaw – “You’d make my dad very happy.” The singer “was always considerate about his wife and family, who gave me a wonderful reception,” recalls Renshaw. “Men loved him, and women loved him.”

But after a few days of anguished phone calls, Renshaw told Martin face to face that she couldn’t go through with the marriage. “The age difference was a hindrance, and I felt bad missing my parents,” Renshaw said, noting that her father back in Arlington wouldn’t fly on airplanes.

Dean Martin Plans To Marry Another

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (UPI)Singer Dean Martin portrays a swinger in his television and nightclub acts—and it appears his private life is beginning to live up to that image. It was learned Friday that Martin intends to marry a 22 | year - old, blonde, blue - eye'd beauty queen, Gail Renshaw', who recently was named Miss World-USA. The Arlington, Va., girl, 3C years Martin’s junior, will be his second beauty queen wife. Martin's present wife, Jeanne Biegger Martin, was queen of the Orange Bowl Parade in Miami in 1949. Martin, a celebrity guest in the parade, walked alongside her float and asked her for a date. A whirlwind romance followed and the couple w ; as married that September. A tearful Mrs. Martin an- ; nounced the end of that marriage last Wednesday when she told newsmen that she was seeking a divorce because Martin told her he was in love with another woman. “I will comply w'ith his wdshes,” she said, “proceedings will begin immediately. “My deepest concern at the present is for our children.” The couple has three children: Doan Jr., 18; Ricci, 16; and Gina, 12. In addition, they raised four other children by Martin’s first marriage. Martin, who is hosting the 14th anniversary celebration of the Riviera Hotel here, spent the day Friday revamping his act, which contained such references to his wife as “keep those cards and letters coming to Jeanne and me.” Friday night Martin’s daughter by a previous marriage, Gail, opened the private “Dean Martin Night” show in the Riviera Lounge, Only she and Martin appeared before a crowd of some 800 to 900 “high rollers from cast of the Mississippi” who were admitted by invitation only. Martin has been in this gambling capital for the past several days, hosting the hotel’s five-day anniversary party, which began Wednesday. Film editors at NBC in Burbank, Calif., w'here Martin’s shows are taped, were editing out references to Mrs. Martin on 29 of Martin's shows which 1 already have been taped.

TOGETHER AGAIN: FRANK SINATRA, SAMMY DAVIS, DEAN MARTIN - 1988

In 1987, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. reunited to announce they would be performing together again, reviving their Rat Pack glory days of the 60′s. But instead of taking the stage in a Las Vegas showroom as in times gone by, they would tour the U.S. in large concert halls. And at their press conference, Frank made it clear that the words Rat Pack would not be in the title, expressing his dislike for the term when a reporter brought it up. The tour would be called Together Again.

Frank felt it would be good for Sammy, who had been experiencing financial difficulties, and good for Dean, whose emotional state had suffered since the loss of his son in a plane crash earlier in the year. As the tour started, there was some friction between Frank and Dean, and Dean’s health was declining, so it was not totally surprising when Dean dropped out of the tour after only four performances.

On This Day In Dino-history: October 13, 1969

Hey pallies, likes it's 'nother deep deep day in all of Dino-history.  The date is October 13 in the year of our Dino 1969, the place, our Dino's playground...'Vegas baby 'Vegas!  The time is after our Dino's swingin' show.  Likes that's the settin' pallies for one of the most  tremendously transformin' times in the life and times of our most most beloved Dino.

What happened pallies?  Likes we are turnin' to wonderfully wise words from our Dino's beautiful biographer Mr. Nick Tosches, scriber of "DINO: Living High In The Dirty Business Of Dreams," to tell this Dino-tale as only he can....



Gail Renshaw was a blond, blue-eyed, twenty-two-year-old divorcée from Falls Church, Virginia.  She had been Miss Speedway, Miss Good Grooming, and Miss Snow Queen.   In September 1969, in Baltimore, she became Miss World-USA.   Bob Hope, who crowned her, gave her a small part a few weeks later on his television special "Roberta."   Her crown bore the jewels of duty as well as glamour:  As Miss World-USA, she also took on the responsibilities of "ambassadress of goodwill" for Frostie Root Beer, one of the pageant's sponsors.   Her manager, pageant director Al Patricelli of Bridgeport, Connecticut brought the ambassadress to Las Vegas in October to work a greeting-card convention before leaving for London to compete as the American representative in the Miss World Contest.   Dean was at the Riviera.   Dropping Bob Hope's name, Patricelli called the Riviera's press agent, Tony Zoppi, in the hope of having his client photographed with Dean.   "Bring her backstage after the show," Dean told Zoppi on October 13.  That night, wearing a dime-store crown and a MR. WONDERFUL-U.S.A. banner, he sat for a few pictures with her.  "The least you can do now is have dinner with me," he said to her after the photographer left.

When they went to dinner that first night, Dean brought along his daughter Gail who was two years older than the ambassadress.  After that, they met alone.   The ambassadress telephoned Ma and Pa Renshaw at their home in Alexandria, Virginia.   "You won't believe this," she told her mother, Edna, "but I'm in love."

We stand in absolute awe of Mr. Nick Tosches' retellin' of the story of our Dino.  No one, and we  mean no one has ever come close to his incredible insights and fantastic flair for words that offer keen knowin' of our most  most beloved Dino.  It is true that no one ever did or ever will truly "know" our King of Cool....but Mr. Tosches comes closer then anyone ever has in doin' so.

The Rat Pack at Seattle (March 16, 1988).

Hey pallies, likes we just can't seem to get our Dino's incredibly involvement (even 'though he left the tour early on) with his pallies of pallies, Mr. Sinatra and Mr. Davis, Jr. in the 1988 "Together Again" Concert Tour.  So, likes when we discovered that Dino-phile youtuber "Deano Martin" had put up the ENTIRE CONCERT from Seattle at youtube, we simply had to offer all youse Dino-holics the op to view it in all it greatest of great glory.

Likes yester-Dino-day we gratefully shared the Dino-portion of this hugely historic moment in Dino-history, but today, below is this coolest of cool concert in all it's glory meanin' that we have those marvelous moments when our most beloved Dino shared the spotlight with pallie Frank and Sammy.

This gigantic gem of living history has been awesomely archived at the online home pad of UPI and is shared below for all youse Dino-holics to drink deeply from.  Likes while none of us Dino-philes will be able to return physically to this incredibly important day in all of Dino-history, it is deeply delightful to take ourselves back to March 14, 1988 and read all 'bout what happened on that hugely historic night when our most beloved Dino, Mr. Frank Sinatra, and Mr. Sammy Davis, Jr. took the stage.

Likes it totally totally touched our Dino-hearts to read Mr. Leighty's delightful description of how the awesome audience of 15 thousand devotees absolutely ate up our Dino's antics......."Martin opened the show and did most of the clowning around, heavy with booze gags.  As he climbed onstage with a slow, tipsy motion, took a sip from his cocktail glass, he looked at the audience and in a slurred tone asked: 'How long have I been on?'   The joke brought down the house."

'Rat Pack' reunites for nostalgic tour

OAKLAND, Calif. -- 'Rat Pack' cronies Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin kicked off a nostalgic 29-city reunion concert tour in characteristic style -- crooning and clowning.

Sinatra, 72, Martin, 70, and Davis, 62, the hottest, wildest bunch in show business in their heydey, each received standing ovations as they took the stage Sunday night in the debut of their 'Together Again National Concert Tour.'


An adoring sold-out Oakland Coliseum Arena crowd of 15,000 is expected to be followed by other packed houses along their 40-performance tour that will reportedly net $500,000 a night. They open next in Vancouver B.C., March 15.

Tickets went for $30 and $40. Souvenir programs sold briskly at $10 each.

The three veteran performers -- backed by a 35-piece orchestra - sang their favorite songs separately, then took the stage together for a well-received finale of jokes, good-natured ribbing and medleys.

The three first appeared together 28 years ago at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas.

When Martin and Davis joined Sinatra for the close of the 2 -hour show, Davis told Sinatra he brought him a 'Golden Age Cocktail' made of Geritol and prune juice. 'It gets you going and keeps you going,' the 'youngster' of the trio said.

Davis also told Sinatra, 'You're still chairman of the board,' a reference to Sinatra's leadership in their old 'Hollywood Rat Pack,' a loosely organized group that included Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lawford, Shirley MacLaine, Joey Bishop, Tony Curtis and Sammy Cahn.

'I'm still chairman and we're still bored,' Sinatra joked.

Their fans, bedecked in gold chains and a smattering of minks and diamonds, would have none of that.

'The songs they played 20 years ago are still good now,' said Millie Jasmin of Alameda, who laughingly gave her age as 39. 'I know I get chills. I may even cry.'

Martin opened the show and did most of the clowning around, heavy with booze gags.

The joke brought down the house.

He then sang a series of spoofs like 'When You're Drinking' and 'Bourbon from Heaven.'

But people began yelling 'louder, louder' after Martin's song selections turned serious and his voice could not carry to the top of the Coliseum.

Davis said he hadn't been so nervous in 54 years of show business but provided some of the show's strongest singing with tunes like, 'I've Gotta Be Me' and doing a few dance steps, although he limped slightly.

Sinatra sang 10 tunes starting with 'Got the World on a String,' and ending with what he called his national anthem, 'New York, New York.' In between, the crooner known as Ol' Blue Eyes sang romantic oldies and belted out an enthusiastic 'Mack the Knife' to loud applause.

The tour also goes to Seattle, Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and several other stops before playing New York's Radio City Music Hall May 6-9. The tour plays Los Angeles July 7-10 before taking a break. It cranks up again Sept. 17 in Houston before going east to play in 11 more cities.

Today we share a terrific trio of youtube vids posted by Mr. Nilsson that return us to 1988, prior to the start of the "Together Again" tour, when our Dino, Mr. Sinatra, and Mr. Sammy Davis Jr. hugely held forth at a powerful press conference to proudly promote the tour.

Likes viewin' this live footage of our Dino and his pallies first bein' photographed from every angle possible and then doin' 'bout 30 minutes of Q&A with the press is beyond amazin' pallies and we are largely lost for words to share how awesomely affected we are by seein' these hugely historic memories in Dino-history.

While early on our Dino proclaims himself "the straight man," he is anythin' but that as he patters and pontificates as only our beautifully beloved Dino can.  Might we simply share one Dino-example with all youse Dino-holics.  Our Dino notes that the pallies at HBO will be filmin' the concert for airrin' on their cable netwark and Dino refers to HBO as "Home Booze Office"...while 'gain reaffirmin' that "I'm the straight man."

Likes true to form our Dino has his ever present Kent Cigarette in hand and it is this interview that Mr. Nick Tosches quotes in his beaut of a biography 'bout our Dino's answers to questions on smokin' that begins 'bout 6:35 in the second vid.  Dino sez 'bout tryin' to stop smokin': "I quit every night."  When Mr. Sinatra sez that he mostly smokes after dinner, our Dino chimes in: "I smoke durin' dinner."  And when a reporter expresses concerns 'bout tryin' to get younger people not to start smokin', our Dino states, "We don't care who smokes."

We eagerly encourage all youse Dino-philesto take the time to soak in this once in a lifetime press conference that has our awesomely amazin' Dino in the finest of fine form...speakin' his mind and makin' funny one joke after 'nother.  Likes we once 'gain swankly salute Swed Johan Nilsson for proudly puttin' us this terrific trio of vital vids that remarkably return us to the days when Dino walked the earth.

Hey pallies, likes one beautiful bit of Dino-devotion lovin'ly leads to 'nother, and such is today's Dino-gram to all youse Dino-philes hangin' out at our humble little ilovedinomartin conclave.  Last Saturday we featured that incredibly iconic image of Mr. Frank Sinatra "goosing" our most beloved Dino "in the ass" from the 1988 "Together Again" Concert in Oakland, Cali on March 18, 1988.

Likes that Dino-remembrance led us to goes on over to youtube and see what we coulda see if there was likes any fun footage of our Dino, Mr. Sinatra, and Mr. Sammy Davis, Jr. from that majestic moment in Dino-history.  And, Dino-low, and Dino-behold we came 'cross the vid tagged "Frank, Sammy & Dean -two Together Again tour clips from 1988.  These cool clips were shot at the openin' night at Oakland, Cali and the second night in San Fransisco.  The classic clips include awesome adorin' fans and as well as this trio of cool cats makin' funny and croonin' the swank standard "Side By Side."
