Dean Martin Arriving at NBC for the 'Martin and Lewis’ Colgate Comedy Hour' 1953

The Colgate Comedy Hour is an American comedy-musical variety series that aired live on the NBC network from 1950 to 1955. The show featured many notable comedians and entertainers of the era as guest stars.

The program evolved from NBC's first TV variety showcase, Four Star Revue, sponsored by Motorola. The "running gag" sketches were dropped in favor of more performing acts. The weekly show was proposed to be hosted by four comedians in a four-week rotation to provide competition for Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town on CBS. The first episode, starring Hans Conried, Rosemary DeCamp and Dick Foran, was written and produced by the then 22-year-old Peggy Webber, who appeared in over 100 episodes of Dragnet with Jack Webb.

The new format was heavily backed by its sponsor, Colgate-Palmolive, to the tune of $3 million in the first year, and the 8:00 p.m. ET, Sunday evening format show was a spectacular success, particularly for Eddie Cantor and the Martin & Lewis and Abbott & Costello duos. In his autobiography, Jerry Lewis wrote that the show premiered Sunday, September 17, 1950, with Martin & Lewis and was telecast from the Park Theatre off Columbus Circle in New York City. As theatres are known by different names over history, it is possible that this was the now-demolished International Theatre at 5 Columbus Circle, the broadcast location of another NBC show of the era, Your Show of Shows with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca. In fact, Eddie Cantor hosted the first Colgate Hour on September 10, 1950.

Portrait Of A Swinger: The Early Seventies Dino

Hey pallies, likes we can't resist offerin' yet 'nother studly stellar shot of our most beloved Dino.  By the length of Dino's sideburns and the color of his hair, we are guessin' that incredible image of our main man was coolly captured early in the swingin' '70's.

By this time in his life, Dino had broken his ties with his second wife Jeanne upon bein' solemnly smitten by the likes of Miss Gail Renshaw, Miss USA-World 1969, whom our Dino met in his playground 'Vegas baby 'Vegas after consentin' to doin' a publicty photo shot with her.  While his amorin' of Miss Gail ended after a brief time, it seems that once he let go of his marriage our Dino gave himself the fullest of full  permission to let his personal personna become likes completely coolly congruent with his public persona.

In real life our Dino became the swank swinger that he had portrayed on both big and small screens....the coolest, hippest, and randiest dude ever.  He let his hair grow longer, he became very very mod in his dress, and he kept much later hours at night makin' the scene at coolest club in LA...the Candy Store Discotheque...where he first met Miss Cathy Mae Hawn who woulda become wife numero three.

To us, the incredibly impressive image below completely captures the terrific transformation that our Dino went through to become a swinger in every sense of the word.  Likes if any of you Dino-holics have any info on the details behind this potent photo, please send us a shot out.  Likes to check this out where we found it, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-message.

Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin Publicity Photo for the Movie 'Robin and the 7 Hoods' 1964

Robin and the 7 Hoods is a 1964 American musical film directed by Gordon Douglas and starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Bing Crosby. The picture features Peter Falk, Barbara Rush, and Edward G. Robinson in an un-credited cameo.

Written by David R. Schwartz, the film transplants the Robin Hood legend to a 1930s Chicago gangster setting, though this story's utterly opportunistic Marian is very different from the faithful Maid Marian of the original legend.

Produced by Frank Sinatra, the film introduced the hit song "My Kind of Town" by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song and achieved a career of its own independent of the film.

Peter Lawford was originally cast as Alan A. Dale, but was replaced with Bing Crosby following a break in Sinatra's relationship with Lawford. The break stemmed from a scheduled visit to Sinatra's home by Lawford's brother-in-law, President John F. Kennedy during a 1962 West Coast trip.[Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who was long concerned about Sinatra's rumored ties with underworld figures, encouraged the President to change his plans and stay at Crosby's home, which (it was maintained) could provide better security for the President. The change came at the last minute, after Sinatra made extensive arrangements for the promised and eagerly awaited presidential visit, including the construction of a helipad. Sinatra was furious, believing that Lawford had failed to intercede with the Kennedys on his behalf, and ostracized him from the Rat Pack. Sinatra and Lawford never spoke again, and Sinatra never endorsed another Democratic candidate. Ironically, Crosby, a staunch Republican, ended up cast in Lawford's role.

Robin and the 7 Hoods was filmed in November–December 1963. According to Robert Osborne, primary host for Turner Classic Movies, this was a very troubled production for Sinatra due to two outside events, so much so that he considered not completing the film. Close friend President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and Sinatra's son, Frank Sinatra, Jr., was kidnapped and held for ransom only weeks later.

A close friend of Martin and Jerry Lewis, Sy Devore costumed all of their movies....

The Man Who Dressed the Rat Pack

Sy Devore was known as the 'tailor to the stars' before his death in 1966 and was nearly as famous as the men he dressed.

December 07, 2001|MICHAEL QUINTANILLA | TIMES FASHION WRITER

A vintage poster of the Rat Pack--Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop--hangs at the Sy Devore store in Studio City. The debonair babe magnets are dressed in hip threads that made them the Mack Daddies of 1960s cool: sharkskin suits, skinny ties and tailored dress shirts.

To look at the guys, you'd think they were decked out in the spare contemporary silhouettes of Prada. The fabrics are fine, the fit immaculate, details noteworthy. Dino's collar is slightly higher on the neck, Sammy's trousers are pencil thin and Frank's lapels are exactly 21/4 inches wide--just the way each ordered their clothes from Devore.

Known as the "tailor to the stars" until his death in 1966, Devore was almost as famous in Hollywood as the men he dressed. But he made his biggest fashion impact with the martini-gulping, wisecracking, Hollywood-Palm Springs-Las Vegas-hopping Rat Pack. They came to Devore's on Vine Street near Sunset Boulevard, just around the corner from the Brown Derby restaurant, to shop as well as hang out.

Not much of the Rat Pack's style is seen in the new version of their 1960 heist caper "Ocean's Eleven," which opens today. Because the movie is set in today's Las Vegas, costumer Jeffrey Kurland gave George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and the other actors individual contemporary looks rather than copy the Rat Pack style in the original. Devore created many of the suits for that flick's costumer, Howard Shoup.

"Our movie is far more character-driven," says Kurland, a stage and film costumer for 23 years who has worked on 16 Woody Allen movies. "But from the original film, I saw lots of personal style in the Rat Pack guys," a look that captured the glamour and fantasy feel of Sin City. "And I wanted that feeling to come across with the clothing. We didn't want to put the guys in flip-flops and shorts at the crap table."

Instead, Kurland put Clooney in casual outfits such as three-button sport coats, open-collar shirts, no ties, Pitt in elegantly tapered suits and shirts that have a European look and Damon in preppy khakis and crew-neck pullovers.

Devore probably would have been pleased with Kurland's workmanship--all 300 garments in the movie were made the Devore way: hand-tailored. That included Andy Garcia's formal wear and stunning vests crafted from antique kimonos as well as Elliott Gould's '70s disco shirts, neck scarves and cheesy matching swim sets.

In his day, Devore and his staff custom tailored clothes for more than 100 films, according to Marti Devore, 53, his niece who operates the store now. Her father, Al Devore, a partner, ran it when Sy Devore died at age 57 of a heart attack. Sy was survived by his second wife, former actress Erika Peters and adopted daughter, Lisa, who was 12 when he died and isn't involved in the business today.

A close friend of Martin and Jerry Lewis, Sy Devore costumed all of their movies as well as many that starred Elvis, who would often shop off the rack at Devore's, taking 15 suits--size 42 regular--at a time. Ricky Nelson, taking his cues from his dad, Ozzie, also wore Devore clothes on and off screen.

In the 1960s, Devore opened a store in Fashion Square Mall in Sherman Oaks. He also opened one in Palm Springs and another in the now-defunct Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for the Rat Pack who were known to fly to Vegas on a whim with nothing but the clothes on their backs. In 1961 it was reported Devore grossed more than $1 million a year.

Three stores were closed in the '80s, leaving only one in the San Fernando Valley. Last year, the store moved to Studio City from Fashion Square Mall.

Flipping through pages of scrapbooks, Marti vividly recalls how at age 10, she and her older sister, Tawny, would pretend to be mannequins and goof around with the Rat Pack when they came to shop. "They'd come to the shop just to see their buddies," Marti says about the Rat Pack, who shopped in good company. Bob Hope, Milton Berle and Jimmy Durante were regulars, too. "They'd crack jokes, try out new material on each other, on the workers, even on customers."

Marti was always there because her father was Sy's bookkeeper. Al passed away at 63 in 1974 from complications from a triple heart bypass. Marti, then 27, took the helm. Today she runs the business with partners Danny Marsh, 43, and Leonard Freedman, 75, who worked with the Devore brothers.

She's not surprised that her uncle, born Seymour Devoretsky in Brooklyn to Russian immigrant parents, became a clothier. Her grandfather, David, was a tailor who had his own shop in the 1920s that was frequented by jazz musicians.

She's not surprised that her uncle, born Seymour Devoretsky in Brooklyn to Russian immigrant parents, became a clothier. Her grandfather, David, was a tailor who had his own shop in the 1920s that was frequented by jazz musicians

The Rat Pack was a group of actors originally centered on their leader, Humphrey Bogart, until his death in 1957. By the 1960s, it was the name used by the press and the general public to refer to a later variation of the group that called itself "the Summit" or "the Clan," featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop; they appeared together on stage and in films in the early 1960s, including the movies Ocean's 11, Sergeants 3, and Robin and the 7 Hoods (in the last film, Bing Crosby replaced Lawford). Sinatra, Martin, and Davis were regarded as the group's lead members.

Danny G's Sunday Serenade with Dino: "It Just Happened That Way"

Welcome back, mi amici!
What a GREAT day it is, pals!
Friday's reappearance of our fearless leader, DMP, has put a new wind in my sails!
I'm SURE I speaks for ALL followers of our Ultra-cool blog...when I say we is HOPIN' & PRAYIN' for his quick return & the best possible outcome with whatever troubles life has thrown his way!
He is our friend among friends & our Dino-diggin' brother!
We are here...carryin' the Dean Martin torch & will wait...patiently...for his one of a kind presence!

Now, pals o mine...as DMP spoke of...life does indeed nail us with surprises.
 Some good.
Some not.
We can only do our own personal best dealin' with the not so good ones.
It takes time.
It takes strength.
Not always thins' we have on our side, pallies.
 Can only do our best.
The rest is up to the man upstairs, I believe.
So, let's stay positive, my friends. Take what life hands us...good & bad...& just do our best!
Dean will help us through...as usual...with great jams, a light heart & his cool cool easy ways.
Just follow his lead...the best youse can.

Today's Serenade seems to fit just right.
"It Just Happened That Way" is ALL 'bout acceptin' these "unplanned" thins' for what they are.
We can't always make tomorrow  exactly how we want it to be, pals.
We can only try to go with that "Dino flow" & hope for the best.

Have a HAPPY & SAFE 4th, mi amici!
 Enjoy!

I didn't plan to fall in love with you it just happened that way
And all the time inside my heart I knew that I'd regret it some day
Now I can't stand to be away from you but I'm alone every day
I didn't plan to fall in love with you it just happened that way

I saw you and I loved you why I I'll never know
There wasn't one chance in a million that our love would grow
You were too far above me any fool could plainly see
But like driftwood on the river I floated on helplessly

I didn't plan to fall in love with you...

Don't you know you look so fine
You're such a living dream like peaches and cream

Dino represents the hipster who loved to party, drink, smoke and have a good time.

Hey pallies, likes there are so so many great great postin's in huge honor of our Dino's 99th anniversary of his descent to earth, likes we hardly know where to start in our Dino-postin', but today we are powerfully pumped to share a remarkably reverent reflection from the blog tagged "THE OTTO FILES." In checkin' back over previous posts, we have stopped by this pad a couple of times in 2015 for other Dino-remembrances that you can locate HERE and also HERE.

This "Otto" dude is truly a deep deep devotee of our most beloved Dino and his June 7, 2016 post tagged "DEAN MARTIN AT 99" in indeed incredibly more proof positive of how much he "gets Martin." His wonderfully wise words of intense insight into the life, times, and teachin's of our Dino are beau-ti-ful to behold and his 10---count -em----10 vid clips, most from the Dino-show give his readers much pleasure in Dino-viewin'.

We salute the pallie who swankly scribes for "THE OTTO FILES"....probably Otto, and salute him for his remarkable written word skills as well as his powerfully perfect perspective on our one and only Dino....sure to draw many many of his readership into a deeper devotion to our one and only Dino. Dino-awed, DMP

DEAN MARTIN AT 99 JUNE 7, 2016

Today would have been Dean Martin’s 99th birthday. Next year, at this time, we’ll be celebrating his centennial. It’s quite remarkable how popular Dean Martin remains in today’s culture, more than two decades after his passing.
Martin’s enduring legacy is both impressive and ironic. He endures in the culture as a symbol of the cool swinger. Dino represents the hipster who loved to party, drink, smoke and have a good time. In our more enlightened society the practice of drinking to excess, smoking with impunity and living a life of partying without limits or consequences is viewed through a clinical lens of disease or addiction. Dean and his Rat Pack contemporaries represent of simpler time of “ignorant bliss.” But here’s the kicker – Dean wasn’t nearly the raucous party animal he made out to be. Don’t get me wrong, he was no Perry Como but he wasn’t as wild as his pal Frank Sinatra either.
When Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis ended their partnership in 1956, the show biz world was stunned. Hollywood luminaries intervened to try to convince them to stay together. It is impossible for young people today to imagine just how big “Martin & Lewis” were in our culture. However, after their impending breakup was announced, those who had a soft spot for the handsome singer, who was increasingly getting edged out of the spotlight by his ego-crazed partner, were concerned for Dino’s future. It was generally believed that Jerry Lewis would go on to greater fame and fortune while his partner would fall flat on his face. Lewis had convinced their fans and friends what he himself had come to believe, that Jerry Lewis was the real talent in the duo.
Upon their breakup, Dean’s first solo motion picture was a piece salaciously entitled “Ten Thousand Bedrooms.” Unfortunately, the movie was not nearly as enticing as the title. It was a flop, only encouraging the belief of some in the business that Dean without Jerry was a wet firecracker. But Dino was no novice to show business. By the time of his split with Lewis, Dean Martin had been singing for his supper for nearly 20 years.
He hired a talented comedy writer named Ed Simmons to help him craft a nightclub act. Dean knew he needed “a hook.” Like so many in show biz, Dean loved the nightclub comic Joe E. Lewis. He thought that he could pull off a “drunk persona” like Joe E. had thrived on for decades. Simmons wrote him some material in that vein. Once out on stage, and with the security of the written material, Simmons said Dean seamlessly began to ad-lib his own ideas into the material he’d written. The act was a success and he would forever be thought of as “Drunky Dean.”
The irony of Dean’s success as the drunken, self-deprecating comic/singer is two pronged. First of all, while Dean was certainly a drinker in good standing, many times on stage he had nothing more lethal that apple juice in his glass. It had the same hue of Scotch and worked well to wet your whistle while singing. Years later when NBC signed Dean to an extremely lucrative contract, Dean quipped, “Do you think NBC would pay millions of dollars to a drunk?”
In the most successful years of his career, 1950s – 1970s, Dean kept a pretty routine schedule. Up at dawn, breakfast alone before the family woke up, out to the gold course for 9-27 holes of golf (depending on his work schedule) and then home for dinner with the family, perhaps watch a western on TV (Dean loved westerns) and in bed by 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. so he could wake up early the next morning and do it all over again. That’s not to say he never went out or went to parties. He did what he had to do but his wife Jeannie was far more interested in the social scene than Dean was.
Dean was essentially an insulated personality. He was not, by nature, a gregarious social butterfly. He abhorred small talk. He once told his children, “It’s not the chit I mind so much as it is the chat.” His daughter Deana fashioned a poignant portrait of her famous dad in her 2004 memoir, “Memories Are Made Of This.” In one passage, Deana writes, “He was surprisingly tactile. He touched people, hugged them, squeezed their shoulders, and allowed them to touch him in return. With his relaxed manner, he had the ability to set people immediately at ease. He was undoubtedly a complicated man, a Gemini with two distinct facets to his personality, and sometimes he would say or do hurtful things without realizing it. There must have been a mass of emotions going on beneath the surface that we didn’t know about, but Dad never revealed them. Instead, he made it his business to present the image of a sweet guy who was everybody’s pallie. Shirley MacLaine said of Dad, ‘he was nice to everyone, he just didn’t want nice to go on too long.'”
An interesting sidebar is the realization that Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra were such complete opposites. Sinatra was a guy who seemed to not only thrive within a group but one who seemed to need “the group.” Whether it was because he needed to be a leader or he just hated to be alone, he was always creating a party atmosphere around him. Dean just wanted to be left alone. And yet, I believe their affection for each other during the heyday of the 1960s was genuine.
The other irony I alluded to above was the longer that Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were together, the more Jerry felt he needed to prove to everyone that he could do everything. His insecurity even drove him to try to prove to people that he, too, was a singer. He was not. It is painful and embarrassing today to watch any of the old clips with him trying to sing along with, or better than, his partner. Could he sing harmony like a great old vaudeville showman? Yes. Was his voice and style polished enough to record an album of vocal selections as he did in the late 1950s? No. But the cruel joke was that his partner was every bit as funny, if not funnier, than he was! Jerry Lewis was a clown and a great one. But Dean Martin was a comedian. In fact, as years went by, it seemed Dean enjoyed making people laugh more than he enjoyed singing.
In the end, Dean’s years without Jerry were more successful than Jerry’s years without Dean. Jerry had about a decade run of successful motion pictures without Dean but he failed more than once in creating a TV career and he certainly didn’t sustain any kind of recording career. Dean, on the other hand, found success in films, recordings, nightclubs and TV, especially TV. One of Jerry’s complaints about his partner was that he didn’t like to work too hard and that was a justifiable complaint. Dean Martin was not burdened by the same sense of ambition, drive and need to be in control that Jerry Lewis and Frank Sinatra both displayed. Therefore, when it was learned that Dean was going to do a weekly network variety show with minimal work and rehearsal, disaster was predicted. Nevertheless, Dean pulled it off brilliantly. The more goofs he made, the more people felt like Dean had been thrown in front of the cameras without having any idea of what was going on, the more the audience loved it.
Dean Martin’s legacy as “The King of Cool” continues to enchant new fans 20 years after his departure from the world stage. The King may be dead, but long may he reign!
I’ve posted this one before but it never gets old.
He was, in actuality, a very good dancer.
The following is one of my favorite moments from Dean’s TV shows. Proof of Dean’s terpsichorean talents.
Here’s Dean with another daughter, Gail.
And Dean with someone else’s daughter!
