Disc News: Clips from Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts: Complete Collection
by Joe Corey on October 19, 2013
Back in the ’70s and early ’80s, people didn’t have to wait all year for a disappointing celebrity roast. They popped up every few weeks with Dean Martin as the host of these all-star festivities. Major stars found themselves being lovingly mocked by other major stars, politicians and Olympians. Now all 54 of these specials have been boxed up into The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. For those of you who didn’t grew up glued to these might want to have a glimpse at the mayhem that happened at the dais inside the old MGM Grand. Here are several clips featured in the boxset.
Dean had a fine time poking future President Ronald Reagan.

Rich Little breaks down the ticks of Johnny Carson.

Rich Little teaches Jimmy Stewart how to impersonate Jimmy Stewart.

Dick Martin and Dan Rowan tease the dangerous Don Rickles.

Here’s Ruth Buzzi attacking Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams).

Buzzi would go on to face Muhammad Ali

Inspired by the ilovedinomartin blog's wonderful reception to my past looks at the Dean Martin filmography

Hey pallies, likes as we were  goin' back through some older posts to gets ready for Dino-ween, we returned 'gain to our greatest of great Dino-diggin' pallie Ryan Ebelt's beau-ti-ful  blog, "Friends Of Junior," and likes while  there we happened to checks out if we had missed any Dino-action on Ry's part.

And, likes indeed somehow we failed to find a May 7, 2013 piece of Dino-prose scribed by Ebelt.  Likes first of all we wanna sez our regrets to Ry for missin' this post by almost 6 months....but we are so so happy to be sharin' it with all the Dino-faithful here at ilovedinomartin this very Dino-day.

Gotta 'fess up that we are deeply deeply moved by Ry's reason for doin' more Dino-reviewin'......"Inspired by the ilovedinomartin blog's wonderful reception to my past looks at the Dean Martin filmography".....likes dudes, what coulda be sweeter then that?!?!?!?!?!  How wonderful to know that ilovedinomartin is doin' our part to encourage Dino-devotion in others!!!!

As you will note below, the subject of Ry's Dino-review is that Martin and Lewis Classic "That's My Boy."
And, as usual our pallie Ry has done a supurb job of turnin' words and phrases into a very very well-crafted
review.  While Ry was not much impressed by the content of the flick, true to his Dino-hearted nature, he puts no blame on our main man or his sidekick, sayin'..."In the end, I can't really recommend That's My Boy, which is sad since I can certainly admire the talents of both performers, both together and apart."

Likes indeed we all knows that the Martin and Lewis flicks were made to cash in on the popularity of the greatest comedy team in all of history.  Here at ilovedinomartin we have come to realize that the Martin and Lewis flicks are what shall we say...an acquired taste.....somethin' that becomes more enjoyable with more viewin' time....and we might also add that after we had read Mr. Jerry Lewis' tome of amore to our most beloved Dino, "Dean and Me: A Love Story," it gave us an even sweeter viewin' point of view of the Martin and Lewis big screen efforts.  Youse can really see how much our Dino and Jerry dug each other as you closely watch their interactions in these epic comedies.

Truly, truly ilovedinomartin wants to gratefully salute our great Dino-lovin' pallie Mr. Ry Ebelt for keepin' the Dino-light glowin' Dino-bright at his blog, "Friends Of Junior," and likes we want to 'xpress our deepest of deep Dino-appreciato for Ry's kindest of kind shout-outs helpin' his readership to checks out our humble little Dino-devotional blog.  Thanks Ry dude, likes in our Dino-book, likes you are simply the best man!
To checks out Ry's reflections directly, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-gram.   Dino-delightedly, DMP

"What about Junior?"

Inspired by the ilovedinomartin blog's wonderful reception to my past looks at the Dean Martin filmography, I decided to rewind the tape even further back to Dean's early forays into cinema as half of the comedy team Martin & Lewis. I knew Martin & Lewis as one of comedy's most famous duos and perhaps as comedy's most infamous feud.  What started as a nightclub act, pairing Dean Martin's music with Jerry Lewis comedy, soon led to television appearances and then onto the silver screen with My Friend Irma(1949).  I sat down with That's My Boy (1951),  their fourth film together, and I can't  help but wonder if the couple of "Best of..." lists I looked at hadn't led me wrong.

Unfortunately NOT the exploitation movie about Siamese twin graduates...
The story concerns an overbearing tycoon and former college football star who lords over his son, Junior (Jerry Lewis) to the extent that he saddles him with all manner of psychosomatic illnesses and allergies. In a mutually beneficial deal, the tycoon pays for Bill Baker (Martin), a poor but rising football star, to pal up with Junior at his alma mater and help him to be a success on the field. Unfortunately, though Junior's got heart, he's no great athlete, and matters are further complicated by the formation of a love triangle between Bill, Junior and the lovely Terry Howard (Marion Marshall).

Jerry does a spot on imitation of me watching this movie...
The plot's essentially sitcom nature would be forgivable if not for the fact that it seems like the comedy duo has little to do. Lewis fares better than Martin in that he gets a bigger character and more face-time, but the movie suffers from long unfunny jags where neither performer is to be seen. Following the opening credits, twenty minutes pass before Jerry shows up for the first time, and almost that much more before we see Dino. The relationship between Junior and his father has more to do with Sissy Spacek's relationship with Piper Laurie in Carrie (1976) than it does with comedy. I realize that a good part of this is the difference in attitude between then and now, but Junior's dad is so loud, brutish, and relentlessly domineering that there's no surprise that any kid would turn out as nebbish as Junior. In comedy, even the bad guy still has to have some kind of relatable soft spot.

Dino thinks romance, movies...and whether he should start drinking...
The romance angle seems wedged in just to give Dino something to do, and it was this kind of thinly developed romantic lead that would eventually sour Dino on doing these pictures.  So when Dino puts in his best turn in a scene where he drunkenly expresses his regret at having taken this deal for his future, the acting is spot on and shows where Dino would eventually get dramatically, but is robbed of any resonance by the weak storytelling.  Luckily, early on, Dino gets a fun song-and-dance number with co-star Polly Bergen at a graduation dance while Jerry hams it up by himself in the corner.  (Full marks to Jerry managing to kick his own shoe into his face, which was probably my only laugh out loud moment during this viewing.) The film's initial football training sequence was also quite enjoyable, but has been done and redone in far too many sports comedy films since.

Jerry demonstrates a 50's craze: Chin Woogies...
If anything, from what I've learned of Martin & Lewis's time on-screen, it's that few things have changed in the past 50-60 years when Hollywood tries to figure out how to turn showbiz success offscreen into even bigger success onscreen. The formula's pretty simple: cook up a simple if inane plot idea, plug in hot commodity, let the chips fall where they may quality-wise, and rely on an adoring public to pay to see whatever comes out. I'm at a loss to think of one where this actually generated true movie gold, and am instead reminded of the spectacularly goofy nonsense that was KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978).

In the end, I can't really recommend That's My Boy, which is sad since I can certainly admire the talents of both performers, both together and apart. What I can instead recommend was the Marx Brothers' collegiate football romp Horse Feathers (1932).  I kept thinking of it all during the runtime of this movie. It too had a story thinner than a sheet of tracing paper, but that was more because it gave the Marx's free reign to do their brand of comedic insanity.  That's exactly what I feel like was missing here: the room to let Martin & Lewis do what Martin & Lewis could do.

"I'm Dean as in Dean Martin....because he was tall and he was a nice guy."

Hey pallies, likes here's a way cool Dino-mention from the blog  "Zap 2 It" where Miss Jean Bentley shares news of a second year of the reality show "Secret Princes" where "a new batch of noble men in a brand-new city: Austin, Texas will try to "woo women" who don't know of their royal tags.  And likes you may ask, "What does this have to do with our most beloved Dino?"

Well likes dudes if you go to the "Zap 2 It" and go to the bottom of the original prose (clicks on tag of this message to goes there) you will discover a vid clip of the 4 royal dudes talkin' 'bout talkin' 'bout "what they want their American aliases to be.  And, likes if you views the clip  pallies, likes you will discover that Prince Lorenzo de Medici of Italy choses the tag DEAN, sayin'...."I'm Dean as in Dean Martin....because he was tall and he was a nice guy."

Likes how cool is that that someone from the Italiano world of today has chosen the greatest Italiano of all times to homage by takin' the name of our King of Cool!   ""Secret Princes" Season 2 premieres Friday (Oct. 25) at 10 p.m. ET on TLC."  Likes that's tonight dudes, so likes if you can get TLC be sure to watch as Prince Lorenzo de Medici proclaims his devotion to our Dino!   Dino-reportin', DMP

secret-princes-season-2-tlc.jpg

When TLC sent four foreign royals undercover in Atlanta in 2012 to woo women who didn't know about their titles, the resulting reality experiment,"Secret Princes," turned out to be an engaging guilty pleasure (if you believe in such things) that resembled a real-life version of the Julia Stiles early '00s classic teen movie "The Prince and Me."

Because such a fantastic concept should not be wasted, the network ordered another round of episodes, set to debut Friday (Oct. 25), featuring a new batch of noble men in a brand-new city: Austin, Texas. The four men looking for love in Season 2 include Prince Alexander of Russia, 34, a direct descendant of the House of Romanov who works as a photographer, Prince Lorenzo de Medici of Italy, 37, heir to the House of Medici, Lord James Rennell of Rodd, 34, a baron in the U.K. who works at an event planning company, and the Honourable Oliver Plunkett of Dunsany, 28, heir to the Barony of Dunsany Republic of Ireland and owner of a computer gaming company.

In Zap2it's exclusive clip of the Season 2 premiere, the princes discuss what they want their American aliases to be. Their inspiration? The most American things they can think of: Dean Martin, Uncle Sam, Luke Skywalker, and Clint Eastwood. Check out the clip below, then tune in for the premiere on Oct. 25.

On This Day In Dino-history: October 25, 1955

Hey pallies, likes through the magic of google blog search discovered that today is a great great day in Dino-history, 'cause on this date, October 25 in the year of our Dino 1955, our most beloved Dino recorded one of his greatest greatest hits....."Memories Are Made Of This" backed by a group tagged the Easy Riders who also composed the croon.

This great report is courtesy of the blog pad "Collecting Vinyl Records," which you can acess if you clicks on the tag of this Dino-report.  Also, likes we are sharin' a youtube vid clip where our Dino sang the tune with the Easy Riders just a few few days after the recordin' was made......a very classic monent of Dino-singin' on the small screen.

ilovedinomartin salutes the pallies at "Collecting Vinyl Records" for makin' us all aware of this very important moment in the career of our King of Cool.   Dino-sharin', DMP

Dean Martin on existentialism

Hey pallies, likes hot on the heels of yester-Dino-day's post on our most beloved Dino and existentialism, likes we just had to google Dean Martin existentialism and likes see if anythin' came up....and low and behold an almost two year old bit of Dino-devotion surfaced from a dude tagged "House" at his most interestin'ly tagged blog, "Amongst Saints And Sailors."

From his bio we glean that these facts.... "I'm an armchair economist and policy critic.  I'm interested in economics, globalization, investment finance, the Declaration of Independence and alliteration.  I like to golf -- not because of the game but because I like to drive golf carts and drink beer outside with friends."   Add to thank he is truly truly someone who "gets Martin."

House's Dino-reflection is short and oh oh so so sweetly to the Dino-point.  Tagged "Dean Martin on existentialism," this in-the-know dude has shared one of our Dino's wisest of wise teachin's......pointin' Dino-directly to the extremely  existentialistic philosophical nature of our King of Cool.  Likes more and more pallies are comin' to understand truly truly how our Dino was the truest of true knowers of worldly truth....obviously includin' House.

ilovedinomartin salutes House for sharin' this deepest of deep Dino-truth with his blog readership, and helpin' 'em to embrace our most beloved Dino's deepest of deep worldly insights.  To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-sharin'  Dino-embracin', DMP

Dean Martin on existentialism

"The whole world is drunk and we're just the cocktail of the moment. Someday soon, the world will wake up, down two aspirins with a glass of tomato juice, and wonder what the hell all the fuss was about."

a sly wink of Dean Martin existentialism

Hey pallies, likes gotta 'fess up that today's Dino-devotion is one of the most uniquely unusual that we here at ilovedinomartin can ever remember sharin'.  It's by a dude tagged Mark Dery and comes from his 'net pad,
"SHOVELWARE."  Accordin' to his bio,  Mr. Dery  "is a cultural critic. His writings on media, technology, pop culture, and American society have appeared in Artforum, Cabinet, Elle, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Salon, Spin, and Wired, among others. He lectures frequently in the States and abroad."

What first grabbed us and profoundly motivated us to share this with you is the tag of the post...."Dean Martin Existentialism: Bobby Darin’s “Beautiful Things”    Likes ilovedinomartin is totally totally smitten with notion of "Dean Martin Existentialism".....a very very apt way of describin' our Dino's total total detachment from the world....our Dino's menefreghista.....

But likes how strange it seems to compare it to Mr. Bobby Darin's rendition of "Beautful Things."  Anywho in listenin' to Darin's croonin' of the tune, it indeed does seem so so Dino-ish in style.  Don't think that our Dino ever sang or recorded this ballad that came from the soundtrack of the original "Doctor Doolittle" that starred Mr. Rex Harrison.

This is one case where ilovedinomartin woulda really likes to be in communicato with Dery to gets to delve and dig deeper into his appreciato for our most beloved Dino....'cause likes anyone who turns the phrase, " a sly wink of Dean Martin existentialism" has to be the deepest of deep devote of our King of Cool.

So, here it is pallies, a Bobby Darin post that gives the hugest of huge knowin' nod to our great great man!
ilovedinomartin salutes Mr. Mark Dery for the coolest of cool Dino-thought.  To checks this out in it's original form, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.  Dino-always, ever, and only, DMP

btw, likes it ain't seemin' right to post a Bobby Darin without at least also sharin' a Dino-croon with youse as well....so, likes here's our Dino singin' "C'est Si Bon" from the Dino-show where likes you guessed it pallies, our Dino does his glorious wink at the end!

 TEASER:

Isn’t there something unsettling, a sly wink of Dean Martin existentialism, in Bobby Darin’s finger-poppin’ Vegas-hipster version of “Beautiful Things” (from the 1967 movie musical Doctor Dolittle)? A hint of nonchalant menace to that walking bassline as it slinks down a minor scale in the song’s opening bars? Subliminal whispers of memento mori amid the brassy blare of Roger Kellaway’s orchestral setting, which nails that sweet spot between suave and schmaltzy? Intimations of mortality between the lines of Leslie Bricusse’s lyrics about “beautiful days of sun-kissed showers” and “beautiful nights of moon-kissed hours,” right there in Darin’s breezy delivery of the lines, “Our lives tick by like pendulum swings/ Delicate things, butterfly wings?”

Dean Martin Smokes a Cigarette while Having Lunch Inside His Dressing Room

Hey pallies, likes ilovedinomartin,  through the magic of google blog search, continues our recent series of accentin' cool cool Dino-poses.  Likes many of these shots have previously been shared before on the pages of ilovedinomartin, but often, today bein' a case in point, we have new info to share with the classic Dino-image.

From the annals of new-to-ilovedinomartin blog "lomography comes one of the most familiar of familiar pixs of our Dino lookin' oh so Italiano, smokin' a cigarette, and seemin' to be listenin' to music and keepin the beat with his arms raised in the air.  But from scriber "chooolss," we discover that the photo was shot by " renowned celebrity photographer Sid Avery in 1961 inside Martin’s dressing room."

And chick "chooolss" sez....  "If you’ll look closely, the Hollywood star was having a meal of egg, muffin, and martini!"    As frostin' on the cake "chooolss" continues...."Martin, according to Avery, “was a ‘joy’ to work with."  Likes it is alway always so so special to hear some 'specially lovin' lines spoken 'bout our most beloved Dino.

Likes gotta 'fess up that ilovedinomartin will never ever look at this Dino-image the same 'gain....likes we will pay much more attentionado to everythin' in the pix and will remember photographer Sid Avery's lovin' homage to the joy of workin' with our King of Cool.

Marilyn’s last film..... the support of Dean Martin

Hey pallies, likes likes seems we are sorta on a Dino-roll when it comes to postin' some spectacular poses of our Dino with other of his pallies.  Today, after  the briefest of brief hiatuses yesterday,  we are delighted to share with you a post from the blog "BEGUILING HOLLYWOOD" where Miss Vickie Lester hangs her hat and where she has created this marvelous on one of, if not the most beguilin' Hollywood actresses of all times......Miss Marilyn Monroe.

Miss Lester's post accents Miss Marilyn's last film, "Something’s Got to Give," in which she co-starred with the most beguiling entertainer of all time....our most beloved Dino.......who totally totally supported Marilyn in by refusin' to continue filmin' without Miss Monroe.  Tragically, Miss Monroe died on August 5, 1962 and the flick was abandoned.

This indeed is probably our Dino's greatest work of unfinished business.  Dino and Miss Marilyn had such such rapturous rapport as youse can see by the youtube vid clips of "Somethings Got To Give" included here by Miss Vickie.  And, likes ilovedinomartin is simply simply enthralled by the power pose of our Dino lovin'ly holdin' Miss Monroe that Lester has begun her post with.

ilovedinomartin salutes Miss Vickie Lester for sharin' this wonderful post on Miss Marilyn Monroe includin' accentin' the very very special role that our most beloved Dino played 'specially in her last film.  To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-reflection.   Dino-awed, DMP

marilyn – the process

something's got to give dean martin marilyn monroe
I’m going over notes on the edit – but look at that, I managed to post something. Thanks for dropping in.
A lot has been written about Marilyn’s last film—her clashes with Cukor, the support of Dean Martin—but what I thought was interesting about this footage was her consummate skill, and the glimpse it affords of what it’s like to turn it on, over and over, performing for the camera. The scene as it’s cut together shows the polish, but it’s very illuminating to see the process… Side note, her rapport with the child actors is something I find particularly touching.
Something’s Got to Give is an unfinished 1962 American feature film, directed by George Cukor for Twentieth Century-Fox and starring Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin and Cyd Charisse. A remake of My Favorite Wife (1940), a screwball comedy starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, it was Monroe’s last work; from the beginning its production was disrupted by her personal troubles, and after her death on August 5, 1962 the film was abandoned. Most of its completed footage remained unseen for many years.
Twentieth Century-Fox overhauled the entire production idea with mostly new cast and crew and released their My Favorite Wife remake, now titled Move Over, Darling and starring Doris Day, James Garner, and Polly Bergen, 16 months later…
Several weeks before principal photography began, the cast and crew gathered for wardrobe tests on a set that was a fully lit recreation of George Cukor’s Beverly Hills home. Production designer Gene Allen had sent a crew of men to Cukor’s home at 9166 Cordell Drive to photograph the house and pool areas of the estate. According to Allen, Cukor was photographed in the set’s courtyard with the intent of using the photo as his 1962 Christmas card.
