 Hold on tight, pallies!

I went to London town
Then on to Paris for the fun I could find
I've found I couldn't leave my memories behind
Where can I go without you
Tries seeing Singapore but that wouldn't do
Went to Vienna but I found you there too
Even in Switzerland your memory came through
Where can I go without you
I want to travel, I wanted romance
I chased that rainbow across the sea
I'm tired of faces and quaint old places
If you can't be there with me
Back on that boat again and farewell to France
Farewell to London town, they haven't a chance
I'll trade the sights I've seen for one loving glance
Where can I go without you

The 70th Anniversary of Martin and Lewis

It was 70 years ago today, on July 25 1946, that Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made their debut as a comedy team at the 500 Club in Atlantic City. Prior to teaming up Dean Martin was a nightclub singer while Jerry Lewis was a comic among whose schticks was lip-synching to records. The two met in 1945 while they were both performing at the Glass Hat Club in New York City.

The debut of Martin and Lewis did not go over particularly well that night at the 500 Club. In fact, it went so badly that the owner of the 500 Club, Paul "Skinny" D'Amato, threatened to fire them if their second show that night was not better than their first. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis then wholly redid their act, doing away with many of the scripted gags they had used in their first show and relying more on improvisation. Their second show that night received a much better reception than the first.

It was not long before Martin and Lewis were performing at clubs all along the East Coast. On June 20 1948 they appeared on the first edition of a brand new TV show, Toast of the Town (later to be renamed for its host, The Ed Sullivan Show). On August 3 1948 they appeared on Texaco Star Theatre Starring Milton Berle. By 1949 Martin and Lewis had their own radio show on NBC. That same year they made their feature film debut inMy Friend Irma (1949).

Sadly, Martin and Lewis would not last. After a successful radio show, sixteen successful films, and numerous television appearances, tensions between Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis reached such a point that the two were constantly arguing. On July 25 1956, ten years exactly after their debut as a comedy team, Dean Martin split with Jerry Lewis. Their seventeenth and final film together, Hollywood or Bust, was released several months later, on December 6 1956.

While the team of Martin and Lewis had ended, they would each go onto highly successful solo careers. Dean Martin not only became a popular recording artist, but also starred in a number of movies and had his own long running variety show. Jerry Lewis made several successful comedy films. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis would eventually reconcile, appearing together on Jerry Lewis's Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon on Labour Day 1976. The two appeared together one last time at Bally's Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on June 7 1989. Dean Martin was performing there and Jerry Lewis showed up for Dean's 72nd birthday. Sadly, Dean Martin died on December 25 1995, ending any chance of the world again seeing the team of Martin and Lewis perform live.

.....Dean Martin balancing a drink on his nose.....

Robert Murray
Hey pallies, likes man-o-man dudes we are filled-to-the-brim with the deepest of deep Dino-delight this very Dino-day and it is all 'cause of one of our newest of new pallies Mr. Robert Murray who greatly grooves on record al-b-ums at  "THE GROOVES MAN - building a record collection one dollar at a time."  Regular readers of ilovedinomartin with remember that it was just last week on Friday, July 22 that we had such a bountiful blast sharin' his original Dino-gram "Everybody Loves Choosing" that is located  RIGHT HERE at our humble little Dino-blog.

Well, we discovered 'nother Dino-honorin' post from Mr. Murray tagged "Who would do such a thing?" that lifts up one of our deepest of deep Dino-memories when we were a Deanager.....the randy of randiest comedy al-b-um from 1966, "THE NEW FIRST FAMILY 1968 - A FUTURISTIC FAIRY TALE" where as Robert remarks...."Dean Martin balancing a drink on his nose."  We were sweetly smitten by that cover and the impersonation of our Dino as a part of the new President's coolest of cool cabinet.  And, we gotta 'fess up that we played the particular Dino-segment over and over and over. Likes if you clicks  HERE, you'll find our first homage of this awesome al-b-um shared in 2009.

Likes we stand absolutely awed by this fantastic find a la record al-b-um by Mr. Robert Murray, and we would indeed strongly encourage him to opens this terrific treasure up and enjoys hims the bestest of best comedy listen.  We thanks him from the bottom of our Dino-hearts for bringin' back such a marvelous memory of our Deanager years, and yeah, we deep desires to be so successful that we might find a cool copy of this coolest of cool Dino-treasure.  To checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram.

Bob Booker & George Foster, The New First Family 1968, Verve 15054, 1966

So the idea for the American political week came from me trying to find one of the all-time great comedy records, Vaughn Meader’s The First Family.  It might have been the best selling record of 1963, and became almost unlistenable to everyone who owned it after the events of that year’s November 22.  There are a million very good to mint condition copies of it virtually anywhere vintage records are sold.  But as we know already from Bobbie Gentry on June 3, you can’t just automatically find the vintage record you’re looking for on any given day.  Instead, you have to buy the records you find when you have the chance to buy them.

In looking for that record, however I found the records that will become my first theme week with this blog.  Up today is the an almost unimaginable political fantasy.  Recorded in 1966 about the outcome of the 1968 election, I can’t really say much more about it.

IMG_7391

The reason being is that I found this copy in a bin for $3 in it’s still sealed 1966 shrink wrap.  So I can’t really describe this cover beyond the totally outrageous cover.  Mia Farrow in a skimpy bikini on Frank Sinatra’s back, Elizabeth taylor’s bust on Groucho Marx’s forehead while Richard Burton looks on in disgust, Dean Martin balancing a drink on his nose in front of Ed Sullivan, all in color, while the politicians of the day are in black and white.  It is fairly prophetic that if one had to pick five politicians who would factor the most two years before the election, these producers picked them dead to rights.

IMG_7392.jpg

Like every other sealed album I’ve ever bought, the one is a cut out.  There is a BB hole with a strange + mark that I’ve never seen before.  It could be that this record was rejected by two different retailers,  which I imagine would always be a risk with something so topical that the whole point becomes irrelevant after a certain period of time.  I really am tempted to just crack the seal and hear what this record is all about.  It’s just so hard to do to something that has survived intact for 50 years, but I’m not sure I’ll ever find any other way to ever hear whats inside.

Today’s Summary:

Cost: $3, $942 Remaining

[Monty was] a friend dear to me. Nobody wanted him around, nobody would eat with him. I took him to dinner, or I would have a drink with him, or I would put him to bed cause he was always on pills. He was so sad, such a sad, sad man, and he was like a boy, so unhappy and rejected, and so I’d say, ‘Come on, Clift, let’s go.’ I’d bring him with me everywhere.” ~ Dean Martin

On This Day In Dino-history: July 25, 1946

Hey pallies, likes yesterday was a day of rememberin'  the last time that our most beloved Dino and most beloved partner, Mr. Jerry Lewis performed on stage together, and today is that huge of huge  historic day in all of Dino-history that Martin and Lewis began their decade long partnership of comedy. seventy years ago this very day, July 25, 1946 our great man and the ever funny Jerry Lewis did their first nightclub performance in Alantic City together at the Club 500...and the world was never ever the same again...and likes never ever will be!

Today's Dino-remembrance comes from the blog pad "Triviazoids - Day-To-Day Look At History Links" by Mr. Brad Williams. Likes everythin' our Dino does it likes purely purely perfect...to the point that the team of Martin and Lewis performed for exaxtly 10 years to the day....beginnin' July 26, 1946 and endin' as we shared yesterday on July 25, 1956. Certainly this was the decade of comedic brilliance between our beloved Dino and  Mr. Lewis.

So so loves rememberin' and honorin' these incredibly important days in the life and times of our amazin' King of Cool. ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to Mr. Brad Williams for reverently rememberin' and hugely honorin' this very very special day in the life and times of our most beloved Dino!

Danny G's Sunday Serenade with Dino: "I'll Buy That Dream"

Hey there, pallies!
How's Summer treatin' youse so far?
Too hot?
Well...I've heard...some like it HOT! Ha!
I, for one, will take the sticky heat...over the frigid cold...everytime.

But, mi amici...I knows it can be hard to find some much needed shade...some days.
Hard to keep our brains on ice.
With the country in a bit of a heat wave...I figured I pick 'nother really cool & easy...SULTRY type tune...to help chill thins' out...just a bit.
A jam to get us swoonin' & ignore the sweatin'.

This week's Serenade, "I'll Buy That Dream", off Dino's 1964 al b um, "Dream with Dean", is the PERFECTO kinda song for a late night float in the pool...drink in hand! Ha!
Maybe even a relaxin' ride in the moonlight, on a hot & muggy July evenin'!
Man! What a thought! Haha!!

Now, pallies...pool or no pool...I thinks we ALL can grab that drink... turn this Dino-ditty WAY up...and let Dean take us away.

Balmy thoughts & hot, hot places.
Yummy, chilled drinks & tan, happy faces!
Sounds like Summer to me!

We better put some of those thoughts on ice, pals...it goes quick.
Here's to keepin' the Summer long & hot...but still OH SO COOL!!!
Enjoy!

Imagine me with my head on your shoulder
And you with your lips gettin' bolder
A sky full of moon and a sweet mellow tune
I'll buy that dream

Imagine you in a gown white and flowery
And me thanking dad for my dowry
A church full of folks in those last minute jokes
I'll buy that dream

A honeymoon in Cairo with a brand new autogyro
Then on my rocket in a wink
We'll settle down near Dallas in a little old crazy palace
It's not as crazy as you think

Imagine me on our first anniversary
With some one like you in the nursery
It doesn't sound bad and if it can be had
I'll buy that dream

A honeymoon in Cairo...
Imagine me on our first anniversary...

Tomorrow In Dino-history: July 24, 1956

Hey pallies, likes six decades  ago this very day, July 24, in 1956 our most beloved Dino had likes his hugest of hugest endin' and likes his newest of newest beginnin' when he called it quits with his partner, Mr. Jerry Lewis...exactly a decade after they had created the greatest comedy partnership in all of world history.

Likes it has becomes likes a touchin' 'n tender tradition on this hugely historic of historic Dino-day to revisit a reverent retellin' of what happened on that last night   Martin and Lewis took the stage at the Copacabana....truly some deeply heart-felt and incredible insights 'bout our Dino and Mr. Lewis' last gig together  shared at the blog "Frontier Net."

From the writings, "The Copacabana, An Illustrated History" by Kristin Baggleaar  comes some deeply deeply devoted details of our Dino and  Mr. Lewis' swan song.  So, once 'gain, let's sit back and reflect on the  meanin's of likes this most bitter-sweet day in all of Dino-history.

Likes as we often do on this day, 'gain likes gotta 'fess up pallies, likes for years we had zip, zero, nadda  appreciato for Mr. Jerry Lewis whatsoever, and felt that the split-up was exactly what Lewis deserved.  But, ever since readin' and rereadin'  Lewis' tome "Dean and Me: A Love Story," we have greatly greatly grown in our ubber understandin' and awestruck  appreciato of just how much Mr. Lewis loved, and still loves our most beloved Dino!

In fact, likes we once 'gain gotta 'fess up that  we have become likes totally totally jealous of Mr. Lewis 'cause he got to spend 10 intimate and glorious years with the coolest person ever to walk the face of the earth...and got to know our Dino better then any other person alive ever has or ever will.  What coulda be more wonderful then that!   In fact, we remember in readin' in Tosches' outstandin' Dino-bio that Lewis was jealous of Jeanne and Jeanne was equally jealous of Lewis...and who could blame 'em...they each wanted our Dino for themselves...and don't we all likes feel likes that same Dino-way?!?!?!

Anyway, on this special Dino-day in Dino-history we remember the lovin' legacy that our Dino and Mr. Lewis had together, and see this endin' as a hugely important new beginnin' for our most beloved Dino.  We are  Dino-rememberin' with youse.

We remain,

Yours in Dino,

Dino Martin Peters

The Copacabana

An Illustrated History by Kristin Baggelaar
.

By summer 1956, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis officially announced that they were breaking up as a team; however, together they were committed to one last engagement at the Copacabana.  Perhaps because it was the last time they would ever work together, Martin and Lewis' final two-week stand at the Copa did a record-breaking business.

The diminished floorshow space was a tribute to their draw and mass impact.  The Doug Coudy production numbers were curtailed as the acts, including the personable dance team of Conn & Mann, were stage waits for the headliners.  Martin & Lewis worked with smoothness and no apparent personal friction despite all the press about their rift, but some dissension was evident with their Pardners bit, a cafe trailer for their soon-to-be released Paramount film of the same name.  To their professional credit they played it straight, with Lewis foiling for Martin's crooning, and likewise, Martin foiling for his partner's clowning.  While both were well received, it was felt that solo or team, the impact was not as resounding as in the past until their final night.  Every celebrity in Manhattan was in the audience to witness the pair's swan song of one of the greatest comedy acts in history.  They pulled out every schtick in their comedy bag for the star-studded crowd, from squirting seltzer down Milton Berle's shirt front to cutting off Monte Proser's necktie.  The sophisticated cafe crowd wouldn't let them quit.

The final moments of the last show of their farewell engagement at the Copa on a hot Tuesday night, July 24, 1956, are pressed indelibly in the minds of those who were present.  Martin's face was impassable, cool to the end.  They finished with the final crescendo from Pardners:  "You and me, we'll be the greatest pardners, buddies, and pals!"  They joined hands for a last bow.  Martin hugged Lewis.  The audience exploded in an emotional uproar.  Jackie Gleason jumped up and grabbed the mike, wiped away a tear, and said, "Folks, this can't be allowed to happen."  The audience roared its approval, but Martin & Lewis just shook their heads, no.  It was over.  There was no encore.  Martin took one aisle away from the floor; Lewis took the other.

Everybody Loves Choosing.....Our Dino

 Robert Murray

Hey pallies, likes all week long we have been havin' deeply delightful Dino-fun accentin' some of our Dino's al-b-ums 'specially with the playful prose from our pallie at "The Prudent Groove."  Well, likes we have just the like minded post to offer as a follow up.  It's from 'nother beautiful blog that accents
vinyl tagged "THE GROOVES MAN - building a record collection one dollar at a time."

The 'grooves man" happens to be Mr. Robert Murray and he has described his blog as  "designed around records, a year long journey to build a record collection in 365 days for under $1000, one blog post at a time!"  On June 19 of this very Dino-year Mr Murray offered the Dino-focused post "Everybody Loves Choosing," which you may have guessed is fantastically focused on our most beloved Dino's most beloved song, "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" and the al-b-um of that same title.

Below you will read how Robert purchased not one but two of this vintage vinyl at a church thrift sale, each for a mere dollar, but with some variations in each, and Murray guides us through his thought processes of which copy to keep and which to regift.  It's an incredibly insight bit of prose that any of us Dino-devotees can learn from as we goes 'bout buildin' our own cool collections of Dino-vinyl.

ilovedinomartin salutes Mr. Robert Murray's terrific taste in addin' some Dino-croons to his growin' vintage vinyl collection and for usin' his potent pad to spread some Dino-love 'round.  To checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-gram.

Dean Martin, Everybody Loves Somebody, Reprise R-6130, 1964

Sometimes, you just get lucky.  At a church run thrift store, I found TWO copies of this classic Dean Martin album, both still in their original shrink wrap.  At $1 each, it was worthy to get both, but which one would be the best one to keep and which one would I re-gift?

The one on the left is a stereo copy, which would normally be the simple, easy answer.  Stereo copies are usually more rare and since they were more expensive, they were played fewer times by their more affluent original owners.  There are some color variations in the sleeves, but Reprise, like a most independent labels, used different manufacturing plants. Finding the same album made in different places has slight variants.

But there are some other things to look for though.

deanmartin2

The back covers are both very clean, but original owner Les Goff made sure his John Hancock was plainly visible.  Again, that would tend to make me favor the album on the left.

deanmartin3

The inner sleeves are also in excellent shape, but the left hand one is just a plain white sleeve, while the right is a 1964 era Reprise sleeve featuring the adult music stars that made up the bulk of their roster then. Score one for the right hand side record!

 deanmartin4

The final decision, though comes down to the actual records.  The one on the left is the Reprise label from the late 60s, while the one on the right has the three colored 1964 label.  The record on the left is not the first pressing, and you always want to add an original record over a re-issue.  Even if that reissue is a clean, 48 year old stereo copy

DISCOGS: DINO RESOURCE EXTRAORDINARE

Hey pallies, likes today's Dino-delight  comes courtesy of our Dino-diggin' pallie at "The Prudent Groove" whose cool company we have enjoyed the past three days here at ilovedinomartin.  Today's Dino-gram doesn't include more of  this dudes powerfully potent prose a la Dino, but comes to us as we were explorin' the links on his blog pad.

One of this Dino-holic's links is tagged "The Collection" and when we click on it we were transported to a new-to-ilovedinomartin pad that is tagged "Discogs" where pallies likes the Prudent Groove are able to catalogue their vinyl collections.  We got the inspired idea to check out how many of our Dino's al-b-ums are listed and we ended up at the page where we discovered 10,061 Dino-entries.

Likes if you clicks on the link of this Dino-gram you can goes there and see for yourselves all the Dino-activity.  As you will see not every entry is actually 'bout our main man, but just a terrific ton are.  And if you click on many of the Dino-images, likes you will most often find an awesome amount of Dino-details likes a list of Dino-croons and other Dino-facts and Dino-figures.

...... but one thing’s for sure… it’s Dean Martin time, damn it!

Hey pallies, likes welcome back to Day Three of  Dino-inspiration from the potent pen of the unknown Dino-holic who beautifully blogs at "The Prudent Groove."  Today's playful prose is tagged " NO… I’M THE ONE WHO LOVES YOU!" and is accentin' the Dino-record of  almost the same tag "DEAN MARTIN (REMEMBER ME) I'M THE ONE WHO LOVES YOU."

This time 'round our prudent groover has some fantastic fun with the slight difference between two al-bum covers of this Dino-release.  This dude quires the evocative Dino-question, "which Deano Martino loves you more?"  And this dude's attempt to answer his own question certainly puts a huge Dino-buddha grin on our faces with his playfully provocative pronouncements.

And, of course, the Prudent Groove comes to the coolest of cool Dino-resolution by powerfully proclaimin' "The great debate continues… but one thing’s for sure… it’s Dean Martin time, damn it!"
This is one Dino-phile that we woulda loves to hang with 'cause he has such a wonderful way of usin' wit 'n wisdom to celebrate his awesome adulation of our one and only Dino.

NO… I’M THE ONE WHO LOVES YOU!
by The Prudent Groove

Deano

The great debate continues… which Deano Martino loves you more? Is it left Deano, or right Deano? They both claim to offer their affection, so which do you choose? And by choosing one over the other, do you then set a precedent for the “less than” Deano? I mean, does he then attempt to love you more, or does he go in the other direction and abandon you all together, figuring your choice, or favor rather, for the “other” Deano is just too much to bear and isolation is better than the heartache of rejection?

The great debate continues… but one thing’s for sure… it’s Dean Martin time, damn it!

And, likes how cool is it pallies that this dude is so so completely candid in tellin' his readership how he "can't  forget, a rumor about Dino drinking nonalcoholic, or watered-down cocktails during The Dean Martin Show and other public appearances where we was seen 'drinking cocktails.'"  That remarkable revelation likes speaks volumes how much this dude is likes totally totally into the Dean scene.

More over this guy speaks more of the simply and pure Dino-reality when he sez, "I can’t, for the life of me, think of any current day Dean Martins!"  Truly truly there never was and never will be anyone as cool as our King of Cool...makin' us yearn more and  more for the days when Dino walked the earth.

DINO ON MY MIND

GentleEverybody can use a little Dino Martino on a random Tuesday evening, am I right? I remember, more like I can’t forget, a rumor about Dino drinking nonalcoholic, or watered-down cocktails duringThe Dean Martin Show and other public appearances where we was seen “drinking cocktails.” Descent shtick, I suppose. Anyway, I can’t, for the life of me, think of any current day Dean Martins! I can see Michael BublĂ© as a modern day Sinatra, although I’ve never heard any accounts of BublĂ© beating women, but he’s young. (The Prudent Groove does not advocate the beating of women, and has a zero tolerance policy towards arrogance in general.)

I am only what you make me
Come take me, I'm yours how happy
I would be to beg or borrow or sorrow with you
Even though I knew tomorrow you'd say we were through
If we drift apart then I'll be lost alone
Though you used my heart just for a stepping stone
How can I help dreaming of you
I love you, I'm yours
If we drift apart then I'll be left alone
Though you used my heart just for a stepping stone
How can I help dreaming of you
I love you, I'm yours

Likes while Mr. Monk doesn't speak words 'bout his awesome adulation of our most beloved Dino, one can tell by the delightful Dino-centric post he shares, that he musta be deeply deeply devoted to our main man.  The post is a retellin' of a tremendous tellin' time in our Dino's early life as recorded by our Dino's bestest of best biographer Mr. Nick Tosches.

It's a quotation shared with Mr. Tosches by our Dino's dentist as a youth growin' up in Steubenville, Ohio pointin' to the fantastic fore knowledge that our amazin' man had even as a lad 'bout his journey to fame and fortune as entertainer extraordinare.  It's remarkable remembrances such as this that makes us stand ever in astoundin' awe of our one and only Dino, who even as a youngster keenly knew his destiny to fame and fortune.

Dean Martin

Dino apparently knew early that he was fated for a glamorous destiny.

“Take good care of my teeth and make them look good,” Dean’s family dentist, old Dr. V. J. DeLuca, remembered Dean saying as a kid. “When I get big, I’m going to be an entertainer.”

Our Mod Mod Dino At His Swingin' Best With The Everly Brothers

The Everly Brothers - Mama Tried & Medley 1970 Dean Martin
Hey pallies, likes what coulda we share today that woulda even come close to the complete cool of yesterday's Dino-gram from our pallie Gilligan over at "Retrospace" 'bout our most beloved Dino havin' a "Change of Wife?"  Well, we've been waitin' for many many months to share today's delightful Dino-treasure with all youse Dino-addicts, and we think NOW is the positively perfect point of doin' so!

Likes quite a while back our deeply-devoted-to-Dino pallie who tags himself "Deanspalley" put us on to a youtube vid of one of the swingiest of swingin' marvelous musical moments from the Dino-show that immediately has become one of our fabulous fav moments of the nine year run of the Dean Martin Variety Show.  As you see above from the gif we crafted, it's our King of Cool makin' music with country-influenced rock and roll singers of the day, "The Everly Brothers."

We are simply over the top with deeply diggin' our Dino and the bros coolly croonin'  "Bye Bye Love" 'long with the Hank William's Jr. standard "Your Cheating Heart," and finishin' off with a reprise of "Bye Bye Love."  Dino's awesome action with the boys begins 'bout two minutes into the clip as the brothers sing "Mama Tried" in the openin' moments.

Likes this is THE purely perfect, extraordinary example of our Dino's deepest desire to, as he was quoted,  "put the accent on youth"...and the beautiful  beginnin's of his transformation makin' his personal persona a million times coolly congruent with his performance persona.  This  swankest of swank segment  was shown on the Dino-show on November 5, 1070 and intensely illustrates how our Dino had absolutely awesomely energetically embraced the mod culture of the time.

We deeply digs the totally with it threads that our Dino is wearin'...open collar shirt with that grooviest of groovy plaid sports coat.  And, this vid clip also illuminates our Dino growin' his hair longer with the longish sideburns and likes the change of hair colorin'  as well.

Likes seein' this clip brought to mind a powerful pix of our King of Cool makin' the scene at the Candy Store Discotheque with Miss Cathy Hawn that we had share long time 'go here at ilovedinomartin and doin' a little Dino-searchin' we share it below with the delightful details.  Likes to view our original post that included this incredible image, clicks  HERE.

Likes you will note that this coolest of cool candid was shot 'bout seven months before the Everly Brothers segment was shown on the Dino-show. So, the plaid sport coat was from our Dino's personal wardrobe.  We coulda view this particular vid clip twenty-four seven 'cause as we keeps mentionin' dudes, the '70's Dino-era is our fav of favs 'cause our most beloved Dino likes put into fast action the swinger image that he for so long had portrayed in his multifaceted  career.

So, likes sits back and enjoys our swingin' Dino swingin' with the Everly Brothers.  Checks out all the swingin' moves our main man makes with his body includin' his ever present Kent cigarette between his fingers.

Hats off to our pallie of pallies Deanspalley for puttin' us on to this vibrant vid of our Dino at his swinger best.

Dean Martin--- He's Going Through a Change of Wife

Hey pallies, likes back for day numero duo for more deeper then deep Dino-edification from our absolutely-sold-out-to-Dino pallie "Gilligan" at his incredibly immensely popular blog "Retrospace." Likes yesterday's Dino-gram was totally tops to our way of Dino-thinkin' , but today's  Dino-message from "Gilligan" is likes totally totally over the top in Dino-book and we can wait to get it posted here at ilovedinomartin.

Today we share with you Gil's "Vintage Scan" of the February 22, 1970 of the Weekly newspaper magazine tagged "parade" that features the coolest of cool cover story "Dean Martin---He's Going Through a Change of Wife" scribed by Mr. Lloyd Shearer.  The prose and pix essay is, of course, 'bout our Dino divorcin' of second wife Jeanne to say I do to Miss Gail Renshaw, Miss World-USA.
Shearer's prose is as powerful as his title is cleaver.   It's the sort of classic Dino-reportin' that thrills us to bring to Dino-devotees everywhere.  This is the study of the life, times, and teachin' of our Dino at it's best, and particularly will be of huge help in knowin' how our Dino began makin' his personal persona coolly congruent with his performance persona...swinger extraordinare!

We are thrilled that not only as Gil shared the scan of the whole "parade" edition for February 22 in the year of our Dino 1970, which you can view in it's entirety by clickin' on the tag of this Dino-gram, but our devoted pallie has also transcribed the Dino-prose from the original text in print large 'nough that we can read each and every wisely wonderful word with Dino-ease!

Likes this enormous effort on Gilligan's part to make this purely powerful prose available to Dino-philes everywhere meets with our deepest of deep Dino-apprecatio.  The world coulda use a zillion more Dino-devotees likes Gillian and we swankly salute him for all his efforts in the cause of spreadin' the Dino-message of cool, and in particular this massive missive of Dino-delight.
We will try and be more faithful in searchin' Gilligan's beautiful blog more often for more and more Dino-adulation of the awesome kind.

Gail Renshaw, the 22-year-old lovely from Falls Church, Va., who plans later this year to become the third Mrs. Dean Martin, has given a needed shot in the arm to the lagging beauty-contest business.

In the old days, contestants were told that if they won first prize they would be awarded long-term Hollywood con¬tracts and possible screen stardom.

Hollywood, in the throes of a deep depression, is no longer signing anyone, no matter what her vital measurements, so in many cases the most a beauty-contest winner can hope for is a job as a Playboy Club Bunny, serving food and drinks.

"Now," says Alfred Patricelli, executive director of the Miss World-U.S.A. Beauty Pageant, "Gail Renshaw comes along and proves that beauty can move mountains, that the days of the rich stage-door Johnnies are not over, that there are still a few millionaires who'll go the whole route—I mean even trade in their old wives for a new, well-stacked model."

Gail Renshaw (39-25-37) owes her luck in meeting Dean Martin to Bob Hope. It was the veteran comic who crowned her Miss World-U.S.A. in Baltimore a few months ago. With his well-trained eye for female pulchritude, Hope generally makes it part of his schedule to choose beauty-contest winners for his annual overseas Gl tour. Two years ago he chose a long-haired blonde named Leigh Avery, who became his fast friend. Last year, he zeroed in on Gail Renshaw and offered her a small part in one of his TV specials, Roberta, much of which was-filmed in Dallas.

Subsequently sponsored by Frostie Root Beer as its "ambassadress of good will," Gail Renshaw arrived in Las Vegas with Al Patricelli of Bridgeport, Conn. There, Patricelli phoned Tony Zappi, press agent for the Hotel Riviera, introduced himself and said, "I'm in town with Gail Renshaw. She's a beautiful* doll who's going to London to represent the United States in the Miss World contest. Bob Hope told me to call you. Maybe you can line up a little publicity with Gail and Dean Martin. I understand Dean's your headliner, and we sure could use the publicity."

A Publicity Shot

Zappi escorted Miss Renshaw backstage and introduced her to Dean Martin. Graciously, Dean agreed to pose with her in a gag photo as Mr. Wonderful. "The least you can do now," he said to Gail after the photographer left, "is to have dinner with me."

Gail agreed. Over dinner, love blossomed. In his relaxed, underplayed style, Dean can move in fast when he wants to. Subsequently, Gail phoned her mother, Mrs. Edna Renshaw," in Alexandria, Va. "Mother," she said, "You won't believe this, but I'm in love."

You couldn't be," Mrs. Renshaw protested.
"But I am."
"With whom?"
"With Dean Martin."

Says Mrs. Renshaw: "For a moment I thought Gail was fooling. I knew Dean Martin was married. I'd seen him on television asking the listeners to keep sending mail to him and his wife Jeannie. But Gail insisted it was serious, he'd promised to marry her. Later, when she came home, and Mr. Martin began calling her every day, I knew Gail was right. I've spoken to Mr. Martin on the phone many times now—he sounds just like he does on TV—and I'm sure he's going to make Gail a fine husband. Certainly, she deserves the best. She's always been a sweet child. Never caused us a minute's trouble."

Miss Everything

Gail, who used to work as a Kelly Girl in the Washington, D.C., area as a typist and bookkeeper, has been win-ning beauty contests since she was graduated from Washington - Lee High School in Arlington in 1965. She's been Miss Virginia, Miss Speedway on Chan-nel 5 in Washington, D.C., Miss Snow Queen at the Shoreham Hotel, Miss Good Grooming, and a lot of other titles.

This past November she almost won the Miss World title in London. But she came in second to Miss Austria, Eva Rueber-Staier, who got to go with Bob Hope to Vietnam. But Gail wasn't too disappointed. No American beauty has ever won the Miss World title, and she was satisfied with the runner-up spot, largely because Dean Martin kept assuring via transatlantic phone that she occupied the number-one position in his heart.

Dean gets ready

When Gail returned to Los Angeles, she found that Dean had already dis-cussed the possibility of divorce with his second wife, the former Jeanne Biegger, herself a onetime Orange Bowl beauty queen from Miami. She has been married to Dean for 20 years and they have three children.

In a most atypical demonstration of wifely charity and understanding, Jeanne Martin announced: "My husband informed me several weeks ago that he had met and fallen in love with someone. And he asked me for a divorce. I have assured him I will comply with his wishes. Proceedings will begin immediately."

It will probably cost Dean Martin between $15 and $20 million in financial settlements to obtain the divorce. But when it comes to Gail Renshaw, true love, and peace of mind, money means relatively little to Martin.

In 1949 when he was divorced from his first wife, Betty MacDonald, who bore him four children, he agreed with¬out batting an eyelash, to pay her $2400 a month for 18 years.

Martin, born Dino Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio, on June 17,1917, knows firsthand that money does not necessarily assure happiness—marital or any other kind.

In retrospect he seems to have been happiest when as "Kid Crotchet" he fought as a welterweight boxer and then worked as a croupier in the rear of the Rex Cigar Store in Steubenville.

I remember many years ago discussing with him his start in show business, when he took the name Dino Martini and sang first with Ernie McKay's band and then with Sammy Watkin's band in Cleveland for $50 a week. It was in Cleveland that he married Betty Mac-Donald and found making a living and supporting his children so tough "I never had time to ask myself if I was happy. I just took it for granted that we were."

Jerry, success and split

It was only after 1946, when Dean teamed up with Jerry Lewis and success came their way, that Dean's first marriage began to founder. By 1949, it was hopeless, and a divorce finished it.

Later, Dean was awarded custody of their four children. He had three more by his second wife, broke away from Jerry Lewis in 1956, and over the ensuing years developed into a full-fledged TV, film, and recording star, a multi millionaire who owns a good piece, of the action at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas.

Basically a shy, sensitive, insecure man who cultivates the simpler things of life—except for women—Martin has reached that point in his chronology where he feels time is running out on him. He will now do nothing that he doesn't want to do. For him, compromise and hypocrisy are expediencies of the past.

Singing Bing's tune

In planning to marry Gail Renshaw, 30 years his junior, he is following in the footsteps of his golf-playing idol, Bing Crosby. Both men are essentially lucky loners who feel they can beat nature and the age differential.

As for Gail Renshaw, she represents the pinnacle to which beauty-contest winners can aspire.

"She is," says promoter Patricelli, "the best thing that's happened to our business in years. With her as an example, we're already swamped with hundreds of entries for this year's contest.

"Girls realize that once they win a beauty contest, even on a local level, they get an opportunity to meet celebrities. Once a girl meets a celebrity, she can put her sex appeal to work. Some-times it pays off. With a little luck, she can latch on to a great husband."
