ERNESTO VALERIO – THE DEAN MARTIN OF SINGAPORE

DISCOVERING ANOTHER SIDE OF SINGAPORE’S MUSIC SCENE: ERNESTO VALERIO – THE DEAN MARTIN OF SINGAPORE – AND HIS 51-YEAR CAREER IN THE CITY STATE
September 18, 2014
bradspurgeon
SINGAPORE – I started out feeling really disappointed when I arrived at the Actors Jam Bar only to discover that it is open now only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings for the jam sessions, and the rest of the week it is free only to organized private events. It was always a mainstay for me, no matter what night of the week. Unless my memory fails. In any case, that was the disappointment. What turned it all around was that as I was making my way back to the hotel on Mosque Street I saw a bar I had not noticed int the past, and it advertised live music. I could see the stage, it looked very professional, very cool, there was a bass guitar and a semi-acoustic, both in stands, and the music was soon to pick up again.
I had the time to go off and find a desert of ice cream to cool off my burning mouth from the street food I’d just eaten next to the Actors Jam Bar, and then I decided to make my way back up the street to have a whiskey and check out the music in this bar. I walk into the place, and I find a bass player and lead player/singer, onstage, playing beautiful jazz with a light touch, and the lead player, a man in his 60s, greets me, right in the middle of the song. Cool!
I take a seat in front of the stage, and bit by bit my attention is taken deeper into this man’s music, his deft touch on the guitar, the great rhythm between him and the bass player, and finally, most surprisingly, the sudden appearance of his voice. I am not a big fan of deep, worn, whiskey-washed voices – even less interested in such voices that sing blues in bars all over the world and on Tom Waits records. (I love Waits, but mostly the early stuff.) But here I found something I’ve never really seen before: This whiskey washed voice of the man I was to learn is named Ernesto Valerio, a Singaporean musician who has played in bars in the city-state for 51 years, may have its limitations, but his feeling and his ability to temper the voice in all sorts of different keys and needs and sounds, just won me over entirely.
From a soft, pseudo high pitch to its more natural lower zone, the voice expressed an inner love of music that is rare. And his guitar playing, the beautiful fingerpicking and lead stuff and wide spread of jazz and pop and other modes – even Chinese, I learned later – just made him the consummate guitarist. And he is also a showman. I had to speak to the guy afterwards. That’s where I found out that Ernesto has been playing in Singapore for 51 years, and that he is now 67 years old.
“I still just love it,” he said of playing music in front of audiences.
That was clear. And the audience loves it too.
But it was in returning back to the hotel that the story broadened. I just had to do a little search on Ernesto Valerio, now that I had his name. That led me to seeing that he is a well-known local performer, indeed, who has rubbed shoulders with the best of them here, and who has had a nice spread of media attention, who is often called “the Dean Martin of Singapore.” He used to play in a group in the early 60s, but soon went solo because he just didn’t like having to deal with other musicians. (His duet with the bass player is remarkably full sounding, by the way.)
THE MALAYSIAN, PAUL PONNUDORAI, MASTER-STUDEND, STUDENT-DISCIPLE CONNECTION
As I read on, I saw a connection between Ernesto and a guitarist I had met in March of 2012 in Kuala Lumpur: Paul Ponnudorai. I had met this guy Paul, briefly, at a bar venue in Kuala Lumpur where I had played. Paul, I did not know at the time, was an internationally respected guitarist who had played with people like Billy Cobham, Tuck & Patti, and Wynton Marsalis and many others. I had been introduced to Paul after I played a set at Rockafellas and I had no idea what a great guitarist this guy was, and how basic my guitar playing must have looked to him by comparison. But he was a cool, simple, unassuming man. It turned out that Paul Ponnudorai, at 51, had only a few months to live, as he died in the summer of organ failure, and that was the end of a man they called Malaysia’s greatest guitarist, and sometimes, even the world’s greatest….
The point of this, is that Paul Ponnudorai had at first been trained by this man Ernesto. Some say Ernesto then later became a disciple of Paul! But why I mention all of this on this blog, is because all these links coming together, these meetings with remarkable musicians in KL and Singapore (located on the Malaysian peninsula) have helped me draw a picture in my mind of a fabulously thriving musical scene in this part of the world that only the lack of an adequate publicity machine keeps secret from the rest of the world.
The Malaysia/Singapore musical world is closely tied, and fabulously populated by guitarists, bassists (Andy Peterson) and an a fabulous collection of beautiful vocalists. Looking forward to learning more over the next few days….

Dean Martin singing fun, especially when Frank is with him on stage.
Hey pallies, likes we follow one intriguin' internationale item of Dino-devotion with yet 'nother. While yester-Dino-day we turned our attentionado to a pallie from Stockholm Sweden, today we visit with a sold-out-to-our-Dino Spaniard dude Mr. Marcos Callau.
Faithful readers of ilovedinomartin knows that Marco is deeply devoted to our Dino's pallie of pallies Mr. Frank Sinatra. Indeed likes today Dino-gram comes from Mr. Callau amore to Sinatra, "Frank Sinatra, the best voice of all time - One For My Baby." Now while we earnst while woulda respecfully disagree with Marco's positionin' Mr. Sinatra as numero uno voice....a place that we woulda only reserve for our most beloved Dino, we know that Callau holds a deep place of deep respect in his heart of hearts for our great great man.
Indeed his Dino-honorin' post, "Dean Martin & Frank Sinatra, again," shows his fondness for our King of Cool. We likes 'specially loves when Marco scribes, Dean Martin singing fun, especially when Frank is with him on stage." And, we coulda 'gree more that our Dino has the bestest of best times when he is makin' funny and croonin' with Mr. Sinatra.
Youse are gonna really digs the vid clip that Marcos has culled from the youtube archives. It features our Dino and Mr. Sinatra with a group of glamous gals who are their "team" in 1958 makin' fun patter and croonin' "I Love To Love." Indeed our amazin' Dino does has an amazin' chemistry when he is performin' with Mr. Sinatra....very very cool to watch indeed!
ilovedinomartin sends our pallie Mr. Marco Callau a shout out of Dino-appreciato for featurin' our main man at his main blog. To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report. Dino-groovin', DMP
Tracking the net, I found a video that looked long, dating from 1958 and is one of the funniest speeches and more swing in which they collaborated Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, this pair of friends who, above all, they had much fun when they sang together. Also runs another video titled Festival of friends in which Dean Martin appears during his television show performing with several stars of the time such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, the Andrews Sisters or Lena Horne. But when Frank Sinatra in the video appears, there is a significant change. No Frank, if not the same Dean. Dean Martin singing fun, especially when Frank is with him on stage. It seems that Frank was always the "party animal", which encouraged when Dean was not very keen to tread the boards. This condition was remarkable in the last tour that Frank Sinatra, Sammy David Jr and Dean Martin undertook together, during the nineties, it was called qie the last tour of the Rat Pack. Dean was very depressed that suffered physical damage. And then repeatedly acknowledged that there was only undertaken this tour Frank. Instead, Dean withdrew before completing the series of concerts that had hired and was replaced by Liza Minnelli who "saved the furniture" with its arrival. But now, go back in time and we travel to the fifties. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra are plethoric, probably at the peak and next time also friendship of a sweet moment for their careers. Dean Martin & Frank Sinatra, again
We need to talk about Dean Martin
Mr. Edlund immediately draws us into his Dino-centric post usin' the Dino-declarative tag, "We need to talk about Dean Martin." As youse will read below, Magnus' motivation for his passionate prose is our Dino's huge huge croon, "That's Amore." Usin' what we suspect is Edlund's tongue in cheek humor, he pokes fun at the Dino-lyrics "When the moon hits your eye, like a big pizza pie, that's amore" in Magnus' words.... "It's a completely incomprehensible, tangled metaphor that does not work on any level."
Edlund argues two different scenarios dependin' on whether our not we are "sympathetic" to our great man's lyrics....and of course finds both "interpretations" wantin' and advises, "Whatever it is careless and sloppy science dictates. It is time that we reconsider Dean Martin and boycotting his madness!"
ilovedinomartin salutes Mr. Magnus Edlund for playfully makin' our Dino the subject of prosin' helpin', we are certain, many many of his readership to turn on to our King of Cool. To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-gram. Dino-diggin' DMP
We need to talk about Dean Martin
September 21, 2014
When Dean Martin in 1953 sang "When the moon hits your eye, like a big pizza pie, that's amore" in the song That's Amore, what the hell did he do? It's a completely incomprehensible, tangled metaphor that does not work on any level.
If we interpret the Dean a little sympathetic and assume he with "When the moon hits your eye" mean "When you see the moon", the next part of the text helkonstig. Has he never seen a pizza in his life, Dean? Because if you have a pizza in front of him, so it is undoubtedly larger than the largest super moon - so far it is understood that you are at 5-10 feet away from the pizza. Furthermore, one may wonder if our dear butter singers often munched completely white pizzas. Maybe it was all white pizzas in the 50s? I actually have no track of it, and a quick Google gives no answers, but if there is any mathistoriker out there so it may well write a line in the comments.
If we do not interpret Dean sympathetic so we must question his intelligence, or at least his knowledge of the solar system's condition, because he stands there and brazenly spreading false facts. It is extremely unlikely, if not impossible, that the moon would physically meet one's eye. 1953 moon landing was far in the future, and films like Armageddon and Deep Impact had not yet been released in theaters, so the notion of contact between human / celestial body was not as common as today. Dean also seems to have no track of the moon's size and mass, if he believes that the experience to get it in the eye is somehow going to compare with a piece of pizza. A pizza in the eye might scribble down and hurts a little; a moon in the eye probably obliterates all human life on earth.
So where, then, is "That's Amore"? How is love's essence? According to the above, there are two interpretations: Either love to see a white (moldy?) Pizza at 10 meters, or is that the moon crashes into the earth and wipes out all life.
Whatever it is careless and sloppy science dictates. It is time that we reconsider Dean Martin and boycotting his madness!
Vi måste prata om Dean Martin
21 september 2014
När Dean Martin 1953 sjöng ”When the moon hits your eye, like a big pizza pie, that’s amore” i låten That’s amore, vad fan menade han då?

When I was a little boy, I used to love the Matt Helm films.
Hey pallies, likes one of the most popular Dino-reads on both the ol' net and here at ilovedinomartin is one scribed by Mr. Richard Metzger at the beau-ti-ful blog "Dangerous Minds." That post is tagged Richard Metzger: The Time I Met Dean Martin and appeared here at ilovedinomartin on July 12, 2011. As we sez, it has been a very very popular post here garnerin' over 5,700 hits.
Likes today we were thrilled through the efforts of google Dino-blog searchin' to find 'nother powerful post on our most beloved Dino from Mr. Richard Metzger 'gain at this blog "Dangerous Minds." This time the Dino-scribbin's is accentin' one of the most fab of fab Dino-topics.....our Dino as swingin' spyster Matt Helm. Richard has tagged his post "SPY-FIDELITY: DEAN MARTIN AND THE SEXY LADIES OF THE ‘MATT HELM’ FILMS."
In this post, Mr. Richard Metzger shares his wonderous wise insights into our Dino as Helm and his coolest of cool candid comments include that he has dug the Matt Helm flicks since he was a wee lad of five years old...now how cool is that pallies?!?!?!?! Michael shares, "When I was a little boy, I used to love the Matt Helm films. Of all the sub-Bond spy movie imitators of the Sixties, I liked the Matt Helm series the most. They were flashy, colorful, cartoony and quite frankly, they were simple enough for a bright five-year old to more or less understand them."
The post is simply burstin' with Dino-devotion in words, pixs and vid clips includin' the full length vid of the bestest of the best Helmers, "Murders' Row," from Daily Motion as well as an absolutely awesome trailer from said flick as well found at youtube. In doin' some research we discovered that today's Dino-devotion comin' your way is a total refreshed and renewed....a remarkable revision of a post that Mr. Metzger first posted at his pad on September 25, 2009 and that we posted here on October 3, 2011.
While the patter is the same as the 2009 entry, Richard has really beefed up his Dino-presentation with plenty of posters and pixs a la Helm includin' some of those glorious gals "from Matt Helm promotional calendars from 1968 and 1969." SPY-FIDELITY: DEAN MARTIN AND THE SEXY LADIES OF THE ‘MATT HELM’ FILMS

When I was a little boy, I used to love the Matt Helm films. Of all the sub-Bond spy movie imitators of the Sixties, I liked the Matt Helm series the most. They were flashy, colorful, cartoony and quite frankly, they were simple enough for a bright five-year old to more or less understand them. That’s how old I would have been when I discovered them. I thought Dean Martin was an actor who played Matt Helm, agent of I.C.E. (Intelligence and Counter Espionage), first, and a singer second. “He sings, too?” was kinda where my kid’s brain took it, it was even more confusing for me when “Matt” would listen to Dino’s records in the films.
The Matt Helm movies were fairly frequent “Movie of the Week” fare on network television in the early Seventies. I’d watch them each time they aired. I even read some of Donald Hamilton’s Matt Helm novels which you could always find at garage sales for a dime. They were much more serious than the Matt Helm films’ decidedly light-hearted approach. There were a LOT of them, here are some of the titles:
The Removers
The Shadowers
The Ravagers
The Devastators
The Betrayers
The Menacers
The Interlopers
The Poisoners
The Intriguers
The Intimidators
The Terminators
The Retaliators
The Terrorizers
The Revengers
The Annihilators
The Infiltrators
The Detonators
The Vanishers
The Demolishers
The Frighteners
The Threateners
The Damagers
There’s been a rumor for some time that Steven Spielberg wants to revive the series. I kinda hope that doesn’t happen. What’s the point after Austin Powers?
Dean Martin, as he pretty much did in nearly all of his movies, played a fictionalized version of himself—see Billy Wilder’s jaw-dropping Kiss Me, Stupid for the best (and most lurid) example— but in this case he was a jovial charming rogue of an alcoholic playboy super spy and not a jovial, charming rogue of an alcoholic playboy cowboy or a nightclub singer or airplane pilot, etc, etc. He was Dean Martin in James Bond drag, basically. And it worked. The Matt Helm films were some of the top grossing motion pictures of the Sixties. Even if they do seem dated, politically incorrect and sexist, they were really popular in their day.
The ladies of the Matt Helm films were truly impressive, let’s not forget about them. Some of the finest grade-A Sixties pulchritude to be found on the planet—Ann-Margret, Stella Stevens, the ultimate MILF Cyd Charisse (who was a very va va va voomish 45-year old when she made The Silencers), Sharon Tate, Tina Louise, Elke Sommer (how I adored her!) and Nancy Kwan (ditto!)—were all on the, uh, Dean’s list. You could certainly make the case that the Helm films rivaled the Bond films as eye candy for the male members of the audience. The ladies had Dino…

It’s interesting to note that although the Matt Helm series obviously grew out of a desire to copy the success of the Bond films with a home-grown Hollywood version (producer Irving Allen had fumbled the ball on Bond, having insulted Ian Fleming about his books potential as television projects), the James Bond franchise took on a decidedly Matt Helm-esque flavor during the Roger Moore years.
To get Dean Martin to star as Matt Helm, Allen was obliged to make him a partner in the film franchise. Martin ended up making more on The Silencers than Sean Connery made for playing James Bond in Thunderball. Soon after hearing of this, Connery renegotiated his deal.

Josh Homme speaks to the 'State' and reveals that he is a fan of Dean Martin.
You sang there Memories are Made of This, Dean Martin's success. What kind of connection is with that group of friends who made music, the Rat Pack?
Among them all, I really liked Dean Martin in particular. I'm a huge fan of his way to sing, voice. He always sang smiling, drinking, always encouraging friends to go to the fun, the joy. Every morning I wake up and my car caught in traffic. I think about how cool it was that lesson from Dean Martin, this conception of what is good for life.

So if you want to experience Dean Martin "pure".............
Today our regular Dino-blog searchin' sends us to a great German musical blog tagged "sempre audio" where blogger Mr. Michael Holzinger has scribed a supremely special salute to our Dino's premier platter "Dream With Dean." Likes over time, we have shared a number of outstandin' posts from Dino-holics far and near that all acclaim the unique, the stunnin'ly stellar quality of this 1964 release from the pallies at Reprise Records.
Holzinger likes many many awesome affectionados of our Dino awesomely affirms the wonderously wise decision of the folks that produced "Dream With Dean" to have "only a small jazz formation used, namely Ken Lane on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Irving Cottler on drums, nothing more. No background singers, no strings, no brass, this recording is reduced to the absolute essentials."
Michael further opines...."The entire band also occurs very cautious with very discreetly held Arrangements in to accompany any time clearly in focus standing voice of Dean Martin alone, and this is easily the size and intensity, the songs effortlessly even sometimes very playful in various shades and and Numerous options to wear. This album shows so clearly what a great singer Dean Martin actually was."
Likes we are so so thrilled to have come 'cross Mr. Michael Holzinger's superbly scribed review of this most classic of classic Dino-al-b-ums. His deep, pure, and true adulation of our Dino shines through each and every word he has written! Music Tip - Dean Martin "Dream with Dean"
The cover already says quite a lot about what the audience expected on the album "Dream with Dean". Such a direct, almost intimate album like this has added to his entire career a second time Dean Marin. So if you want to experience Dean Martin "pure", the reach for here, in the best case as vinyl version.
From Michael Holzinger (mh)
Dino Paul Crocetti, the bourgeois, but probably not very catchy name of Dean Martin, was indeed an actor but also a singer. On it probably applies as well as to his colleagues equally legendary Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., or Jerry Lewis, the term entertainer almost perfectly. Because he combined acting, dancing and singing in a very special way, what he did not only in numerous movies but also shows, and not least its own weekly television show, which was after all almost ten years at NBC in the program under evidence presented.
After he first tried his luck as a boxer, then was croupier in illegal gambling casinos, he began relatively early his singing career, first as Dino Martini. He earned primarily in nightclubs initially rather tedious his money before eventually the big breakthrough as an actor and a singer, but then as Dean Martin, followed.
As in those early years, such a night on the mic sounded well in a smoky New York bar with Dean Martin, which can be procured through the album "Dream with Dean" an almost perfect impression.
Although this album was not until early 1964, at a time, in the Dean Martin was already an international star, yet it stands out from almost all other albums of the singer. Because while almost all other albums by Dean Martin is always quite an extensive orchestra in the game, many backing singers accompany him, and mostly quite lovely crafted arrangements carry the voice of the singer, is actually everything else here.
On "Dream with Dean" comes only a small jazz formation used, namely Ken Lane on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Irving Cottler on drums, nothing more. No background singers, no strings, no brass, this recording is reduced to the absolute essentials.
The entire band also occurs very cautious with very discreetly held Arrangements in to accompany any time clearly in focus standing voice of Dean Martin alone, and this is easily the size and intensity, the songs effortlessly even sometimes very playful in various shades and and Numerous options to wear. This album shows so clearly what a great singer Dean Martin actually was.
The album includes 12 songs, including about "Blue Moon" by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, but also written by Sam Coslow hit "Everybody loves somebody", which was first interpreted on this album by Dean Martin. But who now thinks he knows this version is very much mistaken. Of course, "Everybody loves somebody" one of the greatest hits of Dean Martin, but not in the version that is found on "Dream with Dean". Only half a year later took Dean Martin in 1964, the well-known version, which ended up as a single in the charts, and in this form not only on Dean Martin's album "Everybody loves somebody" is to be found, but also on countless best-of albums and samplers.
"Dream with Dean" is so especially for knit Dean Martin fans an experience, because so immediate and "intimate" they have the singer probably not yet experienced. But all friends gentle vocal jazz will come here on their behalf. Those lucky enough to grab this album somewhere in the original version from 1964 (Reprise - RS 6123), which is lucky, everyone else can contribute to the new edition of Music on vinyl grip, because the album Dream With Dean - Dean Martin while there are about as a download in the Apple iTunes Store, this, in my humble opinion, the best album by Dean Martin you have to really enjoy but on record, possibly in a glass of fine scotch or bourbon ...

Musik-Tipp - Dean Martin „Dream with Dean“

Dean Martin Haiku
Hey pallies, likes recently we have felt so Dino-directed to see if we coulda find more Dino-honorin' Dino-inspired poetry on the ol' web. Google search likes carried us to the pad, "Zen Ramblings - Meditate, share haiku, and simplify your life with all things Zen," where a pallie tagged "msarko" shares their totally touchin' tribute to our Dino. Likes as you probably know, a Haiku contains just a few brief thoughts in three short lines. But, likes within the limits of the Haiku format, this Zenster reflector has captured some of our great man's coolest of cool characteristics in the coolest of cool way.
We loves the most classic Dino-pix that "msarko" has chosen to match their powerfully poetic Dino-ponderin's....what we consider a very very Dino-buddha like pose and grin! We salute this obvious in-the-Dino-know dude for capturin' the Dino-spirit in this hippest of hip Dino-way. To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-gram. Dino-followin', DMP

On This Day In Dino-history: September 16, 1965
Hey pallies, likes today is 'nother huge huge day in the life, the times, and the teachin's of our most beloved Dino. It was 49 years ago on this very day, September 16 in the year of our Dino 1965 that The Dean Martin Show premiered on the peacock channel and as they say, the rest is Dino-history. The show ran for nine fabulous years and aired for a grand total of 264 episodes.
Likes we all know the story of how our Dino really didn't want to do a weekly television show and how he made what woulda seemed to have been outrageous demands of NBC likes only workin' one day a week...the day of recordin' the show with no other rehearsin'....and the wise wise folks at NBC consented to all of our Dino's demands...and for those nine glorious years our Dino crooned his way into our hearts, givin' us tons of laughs, and much much wonderous whit and wisdom to ponder as well.
Likes we are so so grateful that slowly but surely parts of the series have been released on DVDs for us to continue to soak in all the glories of our King of Cool. Our hugest hope and our deepest dream is that one day, all 264 episodes in their full length will find there way into general release so that each and every moment of Dino-wonder will be ours forever!

Dean Martin as Vic Puccinelli
The topic of Mr. Samuel's Dino-devotion, dated February 11 of this year is our most beloved Dino's first big screen starrin' effort with his beloved partner Mr. Jerry Lewis. We have noted that for some reason there has been quite a bit of interest in this Dino-flick this year, even before the recent release by Film Chest of the restored DVD.
Patrick's post woulda be worth the sharin' if only for the fabulous pix of our Dino surrounded by a trio of lovin' ladies with Jerry lookin' on with desperate desire! Samuel does an outstandin' job of reviewin' this early Dino-classic sharin' the basic plot and details of where the storyline came from.
Likes we 'specially 'preciates his candid comments about his amazin' appreicato for this particular Dino-venture....."With so many of their great films to choose from, including Sailor Beware, The Caddy and Artists and Models, I’ll always remain especially fond of At War With The Army, not only because it was the beginning of something beautiful, but it also reminds me that I narrowly escaped a life of 'nothing but beans'!"
ilovedinomartin salutes Mr. Patrick Samuel for sharin' his fondness for "At War With The Army" with his readership. We thank him for his good hearted review of what has often been considered the least of the Martin and Lewis big screen efforts. Believe it or not, there was time when I considered joining the army. I thought, being of a meticulous nature that verges on OCD, that the ordered lifestyle might be good for me. Routine, rules and regulations are all the things I usually thrive on, but the training video I was shown during my meeting before signing up put something of a damper on things. Perhaps I hadn’t thought it through enough. It was the intense physical training I’d have to endure that put me off. Back then I even hated it at school with one hour of either rugby, football and basketball a week. With no sense of coordination I was hopeless, so the idea that the army would be relying on me getting through it would’ve been something akin to being at war with the army itself!
The irony wasn’t lost on my family and they all had a good laugh at my expense, likening me to none other than Jerry Lewis in this classic 1950 comedy. In At War With The Army he plays Private First Class Korwin, alongside Dean Martin as Vic Puccinelli, their first feature film together. The pair are former nightclub partners who enlisted in the United States Army at end of 1944 and are stationed at an army post in Kentucky. While Puccinelli busies himself with trying to get transferred from his dull job to active duty overseas, Korwin wants a pass to get home and see his wife and new baby. They also have the Army’s talent show to rehearse for and they’re keen to avoid the wrath of Alvin’s platoon sergeant, Sergeant McVey (Mike Kellin).
The film’s set-up, based on a short run play on Broadway, is really quite simple and it doesn’t get weighed down by too many details in the plot. This allows for our comedy duo to raise as many laughs as possible in the time they’re given on-screen together, building on the chemistry that audiences and execs at Paramount were quick to notice in their supporting roles in My Friend Irma and its sequel My Friend Irma Goes West.
At War With The Army
Like with Abbott and Costello a decade earlier, who became big stars with a couple of WWII military films, Buck Privates and In the Navy, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis sealed their own success with At War With The Army and went on to star in 14 films together before they split in 1956 and launched their solo careers in the wake of a bitter falling out.
Placing the pair on an army based, we see them getting into all sorts of crazy situations, including Lewis in drag with his hairy chest showing over the neckline of his dress as he sings in a husky voice to Sergeant McVey. The scene is made even more hilarious by Martin’s underplayed double-take as he mumbles, “No, couldn’t be,” when walking past them. At War With The Army At work there’s much to contend with, such as a Post Exchange worker who’s pregnant, a company commander who gets all his information from his wife, a scheming supply sergeant, a defective Coca Cola machine and a lot of beans, beans, beans in a memorable musical number sung again by Lewis.
While Martin gets to showcase much of his singing skills here as well, we get to see what a remarkable showman Lewis is too. He sings, dances and hams up every scene he’s in, if not with his clowning around, then certainly with his adorable facial expressions. Paired together in this first film of theirs, Martin and Lewis were a winning combination with a certain je ne sais quoi that even Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello didn’t have.
With so many of their great films to choose from, including Sailor Beware, The Caddy and Artists and Models, I’ll always remain especially fond of At War With The Army, not only because it was the beginning of something beautiful, but it also reminds me that I narrowly escaped a life of “nothing but beans”!
