Likes last Dino-week we celebrated  our Dino and Jerry beggin' their decade long relationship on July 25, 1946 and endin' it on July 24, 1956.

Exclusive Comedians Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis Were Lifelong Best Friends: They ‘Truly Loved Each Other’

Seasons come and go, but true friendships last forever! Comedian Jerry Lewis knew musician Dean Martin would be his partner in crime when they first met at New York City’s Belmont Plaza Hotel in the mid-1940s.

“I was having a very loose egg salad sandwich, and I bite the sandwich and now most of the egg salad was on my shirt and tie,” he once recalled. “I look around, and there’s this handsome guy sitting there, hysterical. He said, ‘Lick it!’ So I lifted the tie and I licked it, and I said, ‘What else do you want?’ I knew from the moment I looked at him I had found a big brother and a friend.”




Dean and Jerry later went on to become one of the best entertainment acts in the world. Together they could bring the house down with one of their hysterical routines. “They were very attractive guys, and before that you had duos like Laurel and Hardy, and Abbott and Costello,” singer Steve Lawrence previously told People Opens a New Window. .

Dean and Jerry’s chemistry was also booming off stage. “[They] truly loved each other. When they were hot for those 10 years, it was a magical time for all of us,” Dean’s daughter Deana Martin exclusively told Closer Weekly in the magazine’s latest issue, on newsstands now. “Jerry would be there for me any time I wanted.”




Even though Dean died from lung cancer at age 78 in 1995 and Jerry passed away at age 91 in 2017, their work lives on forever. “They made history as the greatest comedy team ever,” Deana gushed about them both. “They made people laugh and feel good, and they loved each other.”

Martin played Matt Helm, a U.S. government counter agent, working for an agency known as ICE (lol).

What's The Movie Margot Robbie Watches In Once Upon A Time In...Hollywood?

 Margot Robbie’s biggest scene in Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, involves her character, late-actress Sharon Tate, stopping by a Los Angeles movie theater for a showing of The Wrecking Crew. Unused to seeing her name on a marquee, she’s hyper-enthusiastic, and it’s one of the only moments in the movie where we get to just sit with her, and be.
Inside, barefoot and in the dark, she watches the audience around her react to the scenes she worked so hard on perfecting — as indicated by a flashback of her practicing a fight sequence with martial arts icon Bruce Lee (Mike Moh), who consulted on the film. Up on-screen, however, is the real Sharon Tate, who would be brutally murdered by the Manson Family just six months later.


It’s a touching scene, largely because we’re seeing Robbie’s version of Tate at a joyous time in her life, enjoying the fruits of her labor and anticipating a promising career. We’re also simultaneously watching the real Sharon, in a role that was hailed as a breakthrough for a talented performer.

Starring Dean Martin, Elke Sommer, and Nancy Kwan alongside Tate, The Wrecking Crew was the fourth in what was then known as the Matt Helm series, a spy-fi comedy franchise loosely based on the novels by Donald Hamilton. Martin played Matt Helm, a U.S. government counter agent, working for an agency known as ICE (lol). In The Wrecking Crew, Helm is sent to thwart the evil doings of Count Contini (Nigel Green), whose theft of a billion dollars worth of gold threatens global security. His mission brings him to Denmark, where he meets the clumsy-yet-alluring Freya Carlson (Tate), an attaché from the tourism bureau who soon becomes his side-kick in the fight against Contini acolytes Linka Karensky (Sommer) and Yu-Rang (Kwan).

Directed by Phil Karlson, the film also featured real-life martial arts experts, wrestlers, and boxers, including Chuck Norris, who made his film debut as a background player. Lee, who appears in Once Upon a Time in...Hollywood, is credited as a “karate advisor,” but did not actually star in the film.
It’s a lighthearted late ‘60s action comedy, full of bumbling pratfalls and failed seductions all scored to the kind of vaguely Chinese-sounding music common in that era’s spy films, meant to evoke the exoticism of international espionage. The gadgets are blinky behemoths by today’s standards, but it works. Think Bond, but sillier.



The reviews, while fairly average, singled out Tate as a redeeming factor. Variety hailed her performance as “delightful,” while New York Times critic Vincent Canby called the actress “the only nice thing” about a movie that he viciously described as “the last faint wheeze of the old spy cycle.”
Indeed, Tate really is charming. Her entrance, shown in Once Upon a Time in...Hollywood, has her tripping over Helm’s suitcase and falling flat on the floor.She pulls it off with enough zest that you feel she’s not only the butt of the joke. Later, she faces off against Kwan’s Yu-Rang in a fabulously chic striped turtleneck/beret combo, and Robbie-as-Tate smiles ecstatically while the audience cheers for her character.

Asked about the scene in an interview with French magazine Cinemonde,Tate said: "Really, men have no idea how cruel it is to have two women fight each other. I was so afraid to hurt the adorable Nancy!"

To which Kwan responded: “And I kept saying, As long as you don’t break Sharon Tate’s arm, or dislocate her shoulder. She’s too pretty!’”

Of course, having two beautiful women clash on-screen was part of the draw for a film that positions Martin’s character as a serial womanizer who is constantly fending off their thirsty come-ons. In that sense, The Wrecking Crew suffers from the limitations of its time. Its female characters are only there to make the male protagonist look good, and the only woman of color is tokenized. Tate’s character suffers from the peculiar Hollywood trope that requires that everyone pretend not to notice that a woman wearing glasses is beautiful until she takes them off.

Because of Tate’s untimely death, the movie now stands as a symbol of what could have been, a glimpse at a gifted comedienne on the rise. That thought turns this absurd farce into something deeply meaningful. And in the context of Once Upon a Time in...Hollywood, it's a way for us to connect with the real woman we mostly know as the victim of a horrible crime.

Likes watchin' these marvelous moments from "The Wrecking Crew" delightfully demonstrates the completely cool chemistry that our Dino and Miss Sharon shared.  We keenly know that Dino-philes everywhere are in the deepest of deep Dino-delight to know that today's youth are perhaps gettin' their first introduction to our King of Cool and they will be cravin' more and more of our main man and will be swankly seekin' to be welomed into our Dino's wonderful world of happiness.

Words fail us to properly thank Mr. Quentin Tarantino for choosin' to incredibly include the life of Sharon Stone into his screenplay and thus wonderfully weave our most most beloved Dino into the film's narrative as well!

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Is a Seductive Pipe Dream

For a while, Once Upon a Time seems as if it’s going to be nothing but a series of extended digressions. But it’s shaped like a Western, and gets better, tighter, and more surprising as it moseys along, plainly building to the grisly, still-inexplicable tragedy that’s said to have ended the hedonistic feel of late-’60s Hollywood. Next door to Rick on Cielo Drive in the Hollywood Hills live Roman Polanski — super-hot off Rosemary’s Baby — and his young bride, Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), whom we know going in will be butchered on the night of August 9, 1969, by Manson family members at the behest of their psychotic overlord. Tate is the film’s third and lesser protagonist, but Robbie has one of its most moving scenes, in which Tate goes to a theater to watch herself in a new Dean Martin–Matt Helm movie. If Tarantino has a Dream Girl, it would be Robbie here, her dirt-smudged bare feet (he’s notorious for his foot fetishism) on the chair in front of her, wide-eyed at seeing herself best Nancy Kwan in a karate fight. Be still my heart! That the footage onscreen is of the real Sharon Tate makes the sequence even more poignant.

The 13 Movies Everyone Must Watch Before Seeing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Including picks from Quentin Tarantino himself.

Quentin Tarantino is no stranger to period films—Inglorious Basterds was set during World War II, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight took place in the 19th century. But Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, distributed by Sony Pictures and set in 1969 Los Angeles, is still a different kind of project for the filmmaker. “I think of it like my memory piece,” he told Esquire. “Alfonso [Cuarón] had Roma and Mexico City, 1970. I had L.A. and 1969. This is me. This is the year that formed me. I was six years old then. This is my world.”

It was a time of national upheaval—the year of the moon landing, months after the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Woodstock was in August, and the decade would end on a tragic note with the disastrous Altamont Free Concert. The years ahead held the political chaos and economic recession of the 1970s. It was also a time of industry upheaval in Los Angeles, as the studio system, which controlled the creation and distribution of films in a tidy oligopoly, was nearing the end of its prolonged collapse.

So to help audiences step into the feeling of late '60s Hollywood, Tarantino curated a selection of films from Sony’s Columbia Pictures archive, which are airing on the Sony Movie Channel this week. Here are the movies the director recommends, along with a couple more period classics that we suggest.

The Wrecking Crew (1968)
Dean Martin stars as Matt Helm in this spy comedy, the fourth and last movie in its film series. It’s not a particularly well-remembered movie, but it’s the last film Sharon Tate appeared in that was released during her lifetime. Given the timeline, it’s likely the film that Margo Robbie’s Tate goes to the cinema to see herself perform in during Once Upon a Time.

On This Day In Dino-history: July 25, 1946

Hey pallies, likes yesterday was a day of  reverent rememberin'  the last time that our most beloved Dino and his most beloved partner, Mr. Jerry Lewis performed on stage together, and today is that huge of huge  historic day in all of Dino-history that Martin and Lewis began their decade long partnership of comedy. seventy-three years 'go this very day, July 25, 1946 our great great man and the ever ever funny Jerry Lewis did their first nightclub performance in Atlantic City together at the Club 500...and the world was never ever the same 'gain...and likes never ever will be!

“Layyyyyy-deeee!” Did you know the comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis performed together for the first time on 25th in 1946 at a club in Atlantic City? Martin and Lewis also officially broke up on July 24th, 1956.

On This Day In Dino-history: July 24, 1956

Hey pallies, likes 63 years  'go this very day, July 24, in 1956 our most beloved Dino had likes his hugest of hugest endin' and likes his newest of newest beginnin' when he called it quits with his partner, Mr. Jerry Lewis...exactly a decade after they had created the greatest comedic partnership in all of world history.

Likes it has becomes likes a touchin' 'n tender tradition on this hugely historic of historic Dino-day to revisit a reverent retellin' of what happened on that last night   Martin and Lewis took the stage at the Copacabana....truly some deeply heart-felt and incredible insights 'bout our Dino and Mr. Lewis' last gig together  shared at the blog "Frontier Net."  (Unfortunately this post no longer exists there.)

From the writings, "The Copacabana, An Illustrated History" by Kristin Baggleaar  comes some deeply deeply devoted details of our Dino and  Mr. Lewis' swan song.  So, once 'gain, let's sit back and reflect on the  meanin's of likes this most bitter-sweet day in all of Dino-history.

 Likes as we often do on this day, 'gain likes gotta 'fess up pallies, likes for years we had zip, zero, nadda  appreciato for Mr. Jerry Lewis whatsoever, and felt that the split-up was exactly what Lewis deserved.  But, ever since readin' and rereadin'  Lewis' tome "Dean and Me: A Love Story," we have greatly greatly grown in our ubber understandin' and awestruck  appreciato of just how much Mr. Lewis loved, and continued to love our most beloved Dino!

In fact, likes we once 'gain gotta 'fess up that  we have become likes totally totally jealous of Mr. Lewis 'cause he got to spend 10 intimate and glorious years with the coolest person ever to walk the face of the earth...and got to know our Dino better then any other person alive ever has or ever will.  What coulda be more wonderful then that!   In fact, we remember in readin' in Tosches' outstandin' Dino-bio that Lewis was jealous of Jeanne and Jeanne was equally jealous of Lewis...and who could blame 'em...they each wanted our Dino for themselves...and don't we all likes feel likes that same Dino-way?!?!?!

Anyway, on this special Dino-day in Dino-history we remember the lovin' legacy that our Dino and Mr. Lewis had together, and see this endin' as a hugely important new beginnin' for our most beloved Dino.  We are  Dino-rememberin' with youse.

By summer 1956, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis officially announced that they were breaking up as a team; however, together they were committed to one last engagement at the Copacabana.  Perhaps because it was the last time they would ever work together, Martin and Lewis' final two-week stand at the Copa did a record-breaking business.

The diminished floorshow space was a tribute to their draw and mass impact.  The Doug Coudy production numbers were curtailed as the acts, including the personable dance team of Conn & Mann, were stage waits for the headliners.  Martin & Lewis worked with smoothness and no apparent personal friction despite all the press about their rift, but some dissension was evident with their Pardners bit, a cafe trailer for their soon-to-be released Paramount film of the same name.  To their professional credit they played it straight, with Lewis foiling for Martin's crooning, and likewise, Martin foiling for his partner's clowning.  While both were well received, it was felt that solo or team, the impact was not as resounding as in the past until their final night.  Every celebrity in Manhattan was in the audience to witness the pair's swan song of one of the greatest comedy acts in history.  They pulled out every schtick in their comedy bag for the star-studded crowd, from squirting seltzer down Milton Berle's shirt front to cutting off Monte Proser's necktie.  The sophisticated cafe crowd wouldn't let them quit.

The final moments of the last show of their farewell engagement at the Copa on a hot Tuesday night, July 24, 1956, are pressed indelibly in the minds of those who were present.  Martin's face was impassable, cool to the end.  They finished with the final crescendo from Pardners:  "You and me, we'll be the greatest pardners, buddies, and pals!"  They joined hands for a last bow.  Martin hugged Lewis.  The audience exploded in an emotional uproar.  Jackie Gleason jumped up and grabbed the mike, wiped away a tear, and said, "Folks, this can't be allowed to happen."  The audience roared its approval, but Martin & Lewis just shook their heads, no.  It was over.  There was no encore.  Martin took one aisle away from the floor; Lewis took the other.

Today In Dino-history: July 19, 1953

Hey pallies, likes just moments 'go we learned via a google Dino-'lert 'bout 'nother great day in all of Dino-story.  Likes the pallies at google sent up to the online presence of the "gaston gazette -covering Gaston County, N.C. and surrounding communities." 

The post is 'nother of those awesome offerin's of a variable variety of powerful pixs that were snapped on a particular day in history...and the pallies at the "gaston gazette" today shared a powerfully potently provocative pose of our most most beloved Dino goin' over lines with his pallie of pallies, Mr. Frank Sinatra and dialogue coach Mr. Bob Sherman on the set of one of our Dino's wonderful western flicks, "Four For Texas."

Quentin Tarantino curates 'Swinging Sixties' movie series for TV includin' "The Wrecking Crew"

Hey pallies, likes stop the presses pallies!   Have we got deeply delightful Dino-news for all youse Dino-hiles...'specially for our Dino-holic of Dino-holics Danny-o?!?!?!?!?!?!  Likes in last Sunday's Danny G.'s Sunday Serenade With Dino, our deeply devoted to Dino pallie Danny-o was opulently opinin' 'bout the lack of Dino-as-Helm flicks recently shown on the small screen.  Danny-o proclaimed,  "The only thin' I is missin'...And I means the ONLY thin'...is some Fun Fun & Sexy cool Matt Helm flicks!   I haven't come 'cross any, this whole swingin' season!"

Well pallie Danny-o that Dino-drought is 'bout to end dude!!!!!  From the noteworthy news 'net pad, "Newsday" come a prominent post by Mr. Rafer Guzmán (pictured on the right), the film critic for "Newsday" and "The Takeaway," and a member of the New York Film Critics Circle.  Likes the post is tagged "Quentin Tarantino curates 'Swinging Sixties' movie series for TV," and as it sez Mr. Tarantino is hostin' " a series for the Sony Movie Channel (Optimum Ch. 396), coinciding with the July 26 release of his latest film, 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.'"

As youse will neatly note below, one of dem 'Swinging Sixties' movies is none other then Helmer numero quarte, "The Wrecking Crew."   As shared HERE on May 23 of this Dino-year, Tarantino's upcomin' big screen epic, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" awesomely accents our most beloved Dino's last go at Matt Helm in "The Wrecking Crew."  Likes when we clicked on the link to the Sony Movie Channel that will be hostin' this swank series of flicks, we discovered that "The Wrecking Crew" will be shown On Tuesday, July 23 at 7p.m. CT and 11:10 p.m. CT.

Likes we loves how our most beloved Dino is bein' awesomely accented with both the "Swinging Sixties" movies as well as with the premier of "Once AS Time in Hollywood."  Truly truly tons of new pallies will be deeply drawn into the Dino-fold, wonderfully welcomed into our Dino's world, and grow deeper in knowin', lovin', and honorin' our King of Cool!

Quentin Tarantino curates 'Swinging Sixties' movie series for TV

Quentin Tarantino, the video-store clerk who became a generation-defining filmmaker, will host a series for the Sony Movie Channel (Optimum Ch. 396), coinciding with the July 26 release of his latest film, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood."

Tarantino's film, set in 1969, stars Leonardo Di Caprio as a television actor, Brad Pitt as his stunt-double and Margot Robbie as doomed starlet Sharon Tate. Tarantino's film series, scheduled for July 21-25, is titled "The Swinging Sixties" and will feature 10 films that directly influenced his new project. Each showing will include segments of Tarantino speaking with film historian Kim Morgan. (More information can be found at sonymoviechannel.com.)

Like Martin Scorsese, Tarantino is famous for his encyclopedic knowledge of movies, so it's no surprise that his list contains many lesser-seen titles. Here's a quick guide to what the two-time Oscar-winner will be showing.

BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE (1969) Paul Mazursky's comedy-drama, about two sexually inquisitive couples (Natalie Wood, Robert Culp, Dyan Cannon and Elliott Gould), captures the adventurousness and ambivalence of its era.

CACTUS FLOWER (1969) Walter Matthau, Goldie Hawn and Ingrid Bergman star in this comedy about a man, his mistress and his sham marriage. It's based on a French play that has been adapted many times, including by Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in "Just Go With It" (2011).

EASY RIDER (1969) Surely this counterculture landmark, starring Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda as hippie bikers on a spiritual quest, needs no introduction. Tarantino's take on it should be fascinating.

MODEL SHOP (1969) Jacques Demy's first English-language film, following his international success with "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg," stars Gary Lockwood as a man who, on the eve of being drafted into the Army, falls for an erotica model (Anouk Aimée).

GETTING STRAIGHT (1970) Elliott Gould is a college student trying to steer clear of politics in this little seen title from Richard Rush, an undersung director whose credits include the hippie classic "Psych-Out," the hit comedy "Freebie and the Bean" and the acclaimed drama "The Stunt Man."

THE WRECKING CREW (1969) How many people remember the Matt Helm franchise, starring Dean Martin as a swingin' secret agent? This fourth and final entry in the series features Sharon Tate as a beautiful-but-bumbling type, while Elke Sommer plays a seductress.

HAMMERHEAD (1968) Another espionage-action movie, starring Vince Edwards ("Ben Casey") as an American agent and Peter Vaughan as a villain with plans to thwart NATO. Viewers will have to assume Tarantino has his reasons for picking this obscurity.

GUNMAN'S WALK (1958) Not a '60s film but a '50s Western, with Tab Hunter as the hotheaded son of a former gunslinger (Van Heflin). Directed by Phil Karlson (see also "The Wrecking Crew").

ARIZONA RAIDERS (1965) Another Western, this one starring war hero-turned-actor Audie Murphy as a Confederate soldier who has a score to settle with Quantrill's Raiders.

BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA (1959) During World War II, a Navy submariner (Cliff Robertson), is captured by the Japanese. The film includes footage of the actual Battle of the Coral Sea, fought during May 4-8, 1942.

NASA boasts a long-standing tradition of blasting space-inspired music to wake up its astronauts every morning. Get into the spirit of Apollo 11 this week with NASA’s curated selection of inspiring Moon Tunes.

The use of music to wake up NASA’s astronauts dates back to the historic Apollo programme.

According to Steve Knopper, a former Rolling Stone editor, flight controllers in Mission Control would serenade astronauts on return trajectories to Earth.

Mr Knopper said: “Several crews have awakened on their final day in space to Dean Martin’s popular song Going Back to Houston."

On This Day In Dino-history: July 13, 1950

 Hey pallies, likes we are back 'gain this day with more fantastically fun Dino-photography courtesy of the pallies at the SAINT LOUIS POST-DISPATCH.  Likes faithful ilovedinomartin readers will remember that in the latter part of June of this very Dino-year, June 25 to be exact, we shared a great Dino-image from the POST-DISPATCH  that is part of a daily series of incredible images of "a curated collection of some of the best AP images that were taken from that date."

Likes last year on July 13, the pallies at this noteworthy newspaper shared the delightful Dino-image below featurin' our most beloved Dino and his most beloved partner Mr. Jerry Lewis with  monkey Pierre doin'  their version of "speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil"---an  ol' Chinese proverb.  In doin' a wee bit of Dino-searchin' we discovered that Pierre was featured with Martin and Lewis in their second big screen epic,  "My Friend Irma Goes West."

Hey pallies, likes there's yet  'nother deeply deep Dino-historical note to celebrate on this Dino-day of Dino-days.  From the musical blog, "Collecting Vinyl Records-for the latest vinyl record information," from the pen of Mr. Robert Benson comes word that today is the 54th  Anniversary of our most beloved Dino's most golden croon, "Everybody Loves Somebody" first broken into the Top 40 on it's way to numero uno on this very day in 1964.

How thrillin' it is to honor this day of days in the life, times, and teachin's of our Dino when the world startin' comin' to his feet to learn the true true nature of amore from the man who is AMORE!  "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" not only became our Dino's theme song, it taught and still is teachin' pallies everywhere the beauty and power of love as only our Dino coulda proclaim it!

Music History - July 11

In 1964, although the music world was being dominated by rock and roll, crooner Dean Martin's "Everybody Loves Somebody" cracked the US charts on its way to the Top Ten. This would be Dino's first Top 40 hit since 1958.

1946 - Dean Martin recorded his first four songs

July 11, 1946…Weeks before starting his comedy team partnership with Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin signed a contract and recorded four songs for Diamond Records: "Which Way Did My Heart Go," "All of Me," "I Got the Sun in the Morning" and "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi." The first two tracks were the A- and B-sides, respectively, of his first single release.
