On This Day In Dino-history: April 30, 1928

Hey pallies, our pallie Mark over at the stellar "popculturefanboy" blog shares 'nother important date in Dino-history (clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram to goes to Mark's pad to read this in it's original form). It was 84 years ago this very Dino-day that our most beloved Dino received his Confirmation. Our Dino had both his first Communion and Confirmation at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Steubenville, which was closed in 2008

Below are a pix of our Dino and brother Bill as youngens in Stu-ville and a pix of the church where our Dino's parents were married, where our Dino was baptized, received his first Holy Communion, and was Confirmed.

Hats off 'gain to our great pallie Mark R. for keepin' up-to-date on so so many Dino-historical events. Dino-factually, DMP

1928 - Ten year old Stubenville, Ohio native Dino Crocetti (aka future Capitol Records artist Dean Martin) has his Confirmation and takes the name Paul as his Confirmation name.

I can't believe I lived half my life with zero appreciation of Dean Martin.

Hey pallies, likes today's ol' so short, but ol' so so sweet Dino-gram mighta be classed as a true Dino-confessional! From the groovily tagged blog, "The Conservative Kitchen Table" comes a wee post from a "nearly retired" Canadian chick tagged Fay who has posted vids of two very very classical Dino-tunes, "Ain't That A Kick In The Head" and "You Belong To Me."

As I sez this Dino-prose is short on words, but huge on sweet sweet Dino-devotion. Seems that Miss Fay spend a goodly number of years of her life "with zero appreciation of Dean Martin." As sad as that is, she also seems to be makin' amends as you professes..."I've been trying to make up for that in the second half."

So, sits backs and enjoys some of our Dino's finest croons and celebrates that Miss Fay has come to know, love, and have the deepest of deep Dino-appreciato for our most beloved Dino.

ilovedinomartin salutes Miss Fay for comin' to her Dino-senses and sharin' her Dino-devotion with her readership. To view this in it's original format, likes just clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram. Dino-always and ever, DMP

Danny G.'s Sunday Serenade with Dino: "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"

Hey pals, thins' been cloudy & drizzly 'round this part of the good ol' U.S. lately. Got me in some kinda funk. The mood I'm in definately calls for some "comfort music" from Dino!

I couldn't thinks of a better way to satisfy my cravins' than Dean's 1971 al-b-um, "For the Good Times". And what better tune for soggy weather than "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"? When these gray skies get me feelin' blue...nuthin' really does the trick of liftin' my spirits more than Dino croonin' some smooth & relaxin' classic, just like this!

It really warms my soul pallies! Don't know what Mother Nature is bringin' your way pals-o -mine...but if you find yourselves feelin' a bit hum-drum, then do as I do! Throw on some Dean and let his sunshine slap those clouds away! Enjoy!

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
Just like a guy who's feet are too big for his head
Nothing seems to fit
Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin'.

So I just did me some talkin' to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleepin' on the job
Oh, raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin'.

But there's one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me
Won't defeat me, it won't be long
Till happiness steps up to greet me.

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because I'm free, nothing's worryin' me.

(It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me.)

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me
Oh, I'm never gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because I'm free, nothin's worryin' me...

Hey pallies, likes I simply grooves on the many and varied bits of Dino-devotion found all over the world wide web. Romano has assembled a fine selection of pixs and vid clips of our Dino that nicely matches the expressed theme of his blog...."legendary bikes and lifestyle"...wells likes not sure that the cycles that our Dino used at Matt Helm are "legendary," but likes indeed our Dino has a "lengendary lifestyle!"

Very very cool to find a blog in Italiano that has picked up on one of biker theme in "The Ambushers." ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to Mr. Romano for puttin' his biker pallies on to our Dino...sure to bring others to knowin', lovin' and honorin' our King of Cool. MATT HELM’S BONNIE

The great Dean Martin, Dino Crocetti anagrafe, another icon of the '60s. A life of success, women, gambling and drinking alcohol ... so that probably contributed to "smooth" and make his already amazing that velvet voice ...

On the big screen he played the brilliant British and American response to the "swanky" James Bond, lowering himself into the shoes of Matt Helm, a secret agent that Dean Martin had all the vices and all the defects but also all the playful fun and carefree and in that role could not resist the fascination of a Bonneville.

Golf Meets Pizza: Dean Martin: "That's Amore"

Hey pallies, likes we return to Miss Lena's blog, "Music Sounds Better With Two," for yet a third helpin' of her amazin' mixin' of deeply developed understandin' of both our most beloved Dino and the tunes he chooses to croon! Today's post, cleverly tagged, "Golf Meets Pizza: Dean Martin: "That's Amore," puts the accent on the mixin' of food and sport and amore!

Likes again simply loves Miss Lena's Dino-impressions....

"Martin himself gliding along the words like a bird riding a thermal, effortlessly cool and winking along."

"...there is a smile in Martin’s voice that is warming and understanding in a way that is just right for this song."

And, likes she has such deep understandin' of how this classic Dino-tune was so so right for the times.....

"As Italy recovered from the war, the world embraced its culture and that includes transport (Vespa scooters), food (pizza, cappuccino bars, the now-UK-ubiquitous spaghetti bolognaise) and above all cinema..."

Miss Lena has struck 'nother high Dino-note with her Dino-prosin' here, and likes ilovedinomartin 'gain shared our Dino-appreciato for her weavin' such deep, pure, and true Dino-devotion into this, and her other song reviews. Likes just hopes Miss Lena that you will honor us with more Dino-inspiration in the near near Dino-future.

Golf Meets Pizza: Dean Martin: "That's Amore"

And now, all of a sudden, we are out of 1953 and into 1954 and the second number two song that is from a movie - The Caddy, a Martin and Lewis golfing comedy that was (presumably) a hit, though that movie was set in the green country clubs of the US and not in 'old Napoli' where the heart of the song resides. By now it might seem a little cloying, clichéd, cheesy even - mandolins, a small chorus of men and women, and Martin himself gliding along the words like a bird riding a thermal, effortlessly cool and winking along.

At first I thought this was a traditional song, but in fact it was written for the movie and its references to 'pizza pie' and 'pastafazool' show several things - the food of Italy was known well enough in the US and the UK to be understood (perhaps more so in the US, but the flood of Italian immigrants to the UK in the 50s cannot be forgotten) and also considered hip and fashionable. As Italy recovered from the war, the world embraced its culture and that includes transport (Vespa scooters), food (pizza, cappuccino bars, the now-UK-ubiquitous spaghetti bolognaise) and above all cinema - from what I can tell, the movies came first, and then the rest followed.

So how appropriate, then, for this romantic near-waltz to be from a movie? And sung by an Italian-American (one who understands the absent-minded daze of amore – not that say, Sinatra couldn’t sing this, but there is a smile in Martin’s voice that is warming and understanding in a way that is just right for this song) as well? What more could be asked for! As someone in love I can well vouch for the clouds at the feet, the moon hitting my eye, the oddly drunken streets and glowing faces...so if this song seems like a relatively old-fashioned one, it still stands for a condition that existed long before it was written, and not just in Naples (still the home of the best pizza in the world), either. (I would like to note that my Italian mother-in law immigrated to Glasgow during this time and brought some vita bella with her and I bless her for it.)

Can't Live Without Them: Dean Martin: "Return To Me" and "Volare"

Hey pallies, likes followin' on the heels of Tuesday's really rad review by Miss Lena of our Dino's croonin' of "Gentle On My Mind," we turn again to her blog, "Music Sounds Better With Two," for 'nother amazin' Dino-review...this time of our great man's great tunes "Return To Me" and "Volare."

This Miss Lena is certainly an enchantress when it comes to puttin' words to page. She is so so obviously enchanted with both the songs our most beloved Dino sings as well as with the manner in which he sings 'em.

I simply loves how Miss Lena makes us so very very aware that there are such deep undercurrents and ever deeper meanin's to our Dino's songs of amore. I would so concur with Miss Lena that our Dino is a true existentialist and, for example in the case of "Volare," "you know that his ultimate wish to be off the earth, in the clouds and sky so blue is not just a lyric."

Likes I coulda goes on and on 'bout the exceedin'ly excellent way that Miss Lena has of understandin' both the words to these songs, and the manner in which our Dino interprets those words. But, really what all you dudes need to do is simply read Lena's awesome Dino-prose for yourselves.

Again, ilovedinomartin congratulates Miss Lena for 'nother amazin' Dino-musical-reflection..simply stunnin'ly stellar! To view this in it's original format, likes just clicks on the tag of this here Dino-message. Dino-delightedly, DMP

Can't Live Without Them: Dean Martin: "Return To Me" and "Volare"

The accordions and girls are there, and Dean steps in, as into a comfortable pair of slippers, and sings. Or: he sounds a little more awake and lively, stopping all of a sudden to sing in his native tongue, to get his roots into the song and the song into its roots, words that blend and blur (to my ear) wonderfully, the way olive oil and garlic and parmesan and pasta do - words such as these:

"Penso che un sogno cosi non ritorni mai piu/Mi dipingevo le mani e la faccia di blu
/Poi d'improvviso venivo dal vento rapito/E incominciavo a volare nel cielo infinito"

The sky is blue and his heart has wings; his heart has wings because she has indeed come back to him. "Te amo" he sang in the first, and now his love is like a brave warm wind that can carry them both. As someone who has flown over an ocean to be with the one I love three times, I know (despite the dull practicalities of flight) how he feels - to fly, to get to what is real, to get away from the earthbound, to return to someone (though there was never any problems or quarrels, of course).

Of course, when Martin sings about getting away from disillusion, you have to wonder - in this time of existentialists and bohos and so on - how much "Volare" spoke to general post-war feelings that NOW was the only time, the past being a nightmare, the future all but unknowable. To live for the present is close - very close, in fact - to not actually existing in ye olde time-space continuum at all. To be and not to be; that is the Dean Martin $64,000 question, ultimately. And while the song is mainly about the blue in the air and blue paint making the narrator invisible, Domenico Modugno's Eurovision hit (my parents' song, by the way) is, I am guessing, a little bit more romantic - whereas Martin sings it with a nonchalant lightness that treads next to romance, yes, but you know that his ultimate wish to be off the earth, in the clouds and sky so blue is not just a lyric.

"Return To Me" is far more earthbound, Martin's warmth sounding like a man sitting on a chair on the street or perhaps standing underneath her window, longingly singing for her return - he is persuasive and there is no doubt she will return - it is as sweet as a Baci chocolate, complete with a message of love's durability inside. (It was co-written by Carmen Lombardo, so Canada once again sneaks in here, with no one noticing.)

I must note that these songs coincide with the height of what I guess might be called Italophilia in the UK; a mania happily shared by my husband's parents as well as my own. Even though I grew up as (and still am) a Francophile by nature, it is hard to resist anything Italian; not even Virgil himself could have written better lyrics here, and I am sure he would have taken more time to write them than their authors did. Rock, as previously mentioned, still rolled along, but the Vespa scooters, cappucino machines and pizza parlors would remain, along with the sense of blissful nothingness that just skirts something a little strange and unknown, but also warming as a June sky.

On This Day In Dino-history: April 25, 1973

Hey pallies, likes 38 years ago on this very Dino-date our Dino made his vows to love, honour, and cherish Miss Catherine Mae Hawn. One of the cool details 'bout the event is that the flowers alone for this gala event cost $85,000.

'Nother cool Dino-fact is that our ever generious Dino gifted his best man, Frank Sinatra with a very very expensive gold cigarette lighter studded in diamonds sayin' "FUCK YOU VERY MUCH." This detail comes from the pages of our Dino's girlpallie Deana's Dino-bio.

As you look at the stellar weddin' poses 'bove and below, you can certainly see how much our Dino and Miss Cathy were in love. Unfortunately our Dino's marriage to wife numero 3 lasted less then 3 years. More details of the weddin' are scribed below. Dino-rememberin', DMP

Entertainer Dean Martin married his girlfriend of two years, Cathy Hawn, 25, in a small ceremony at his Hollywood home,Wednesday evening. Frank Sinatra was his best man. It was the third marriage for Martin, 55. It was Miss Hawn's second marriage, and her 6-year old daughter, Sasha, was the flower girl. The bride word a peach champaign French chiffon satin bias-cut gown with a high draped neck and a long train for the ceremony at Martin's home in the Bel Air area.

The Knowing: Dean Martin: "Gentle On My Mind"

Hey pallies, likes what pure and perfect pleasure it is to strike Dino-gold while siftin' among the countless millions of Dino-references scatter all over the web...and today's Dino-discovery is simply that...a golden piece of Dino-prose!

From the pen of a lady tagged Lena, at her blog, "Music Sounds Better With Two," comes a stunnin' review of our most beloved Dino's chart topper tune, "Gentle On My Mind." Miss Lena describes herself as a "Native Angeleno obsessed with food and music, now living in London."

Boy-o-boy pallies, likes am I thrilled that she is "obsessed with music" 'cause her obsession has led her to scribe a simply beau-t-ful bit of Dino-prose on this Dino-classic. It is so so clear as you read her thoughts in "The Knowing: Dean Martin: "Gentle On My Mind," that Miss Lena "knows" this John Hartford tune and she "knows" our Dino and the magic that he weaves while singin' it.

Lena's words are pure pure poetry....each word and phrase so so well chosen to convey the golden nature of the song's poetical imagery and our amazin' Dino's golden style of conveyin' it to his listenin' audience. I coulda likes tries to wax eloquently 'bout her supurb scribin', but dudes likes simply takes the time to read her each and every word...likes you won't be disappointed!

ilovedinomartin sez our deepest of deep Dino-appreciato to Miss Lena for the time, energy, and creativity she has put into her Dino-prose. It is so wonderful to find someone with such amazin' understandin' of both lyrics and artist! To view this in it's original format, likes clicks on the tag of this Dino-message...and great news pallies! I discovered that Miss Lena has two more posts on other classic Dino-tunes that I will certainly be sharin' with all you pallies likes real real Dino-soon! Dino-awed, DMP

The Knowing: Dean Martin: "Gentle On My Mind"

Sometimes the invisible is just as important as the visible; intangible, tangible. As important as it can be to have an experience of something, it is in some ways even more rewarding to know that that experience is yours and yours alone, softly tucked away somewhere, to rest upon when you need it. It can make a harsh world seem more friendly and bearable, and the rough life smoother, more elegant.

I see a clear path; one away from the city, the town, the village even. It's where he walks and remembers and walks some more, parallel to the railroad track perhaps, nearby some woods where he's found a safe place to sleep...he's away from her and yet she is always there, an interior night light of sorts, a sureness that gives the randomness and, yes, repetitiveness of his life an extra dimension. As he talks/sings he unwinds his tether to her, one that is the most slack imaginable without being undone altogether; neither is one for clinging or even letter-writing.

She and he have a bond; that bond exists not as two irresistible soul mates but almost as two sides of one person, one forever there and content to see him when she can, the other out there in the civilized wilderness, rough and forever on the move. There is no great unrequited longing of romance but instead the sure knowledge that she is there, a quietly profound presence that soothes like medicine and is as solid as the earth itself. He may roam, but he knows there is that one path, that floor he can sleep on...and this gives his freedom a sweetness that takes any sense of deprivation or desperation away.

This is indeed the sweet life without caring; a genial warmth that spreads easily from the singer to the listener, and while Glen Campbell had the biggest hit with John Hartford's song in the US, it was Dean Martin's in the UK, and his laissez-faire style of singing (on his tv show he does it so lazily I can't always make out the words; not sure if Liz Fraser ever heard this or not) suits the words perfectly. The song is carefree, open, wide as the plain I imagine the narrator walks and knows well; and Martin's cheerful embracing of that joy is a pleasure, and you can imagine happily walking along with him, sharing that gurgling soup, if not envying the fact that she is constantly - though not heavily - on his mind. Is he going away from her, going towards her, orbiting her? All are possibilities, but that she and he have that connection is the point, and essentially as long as they are both safe, they are both happy.

This was Dean Martin's last UK hit in his lifetime; it neatly helps to end the decade, to give notice that the early glamorous Mad Men 60s had not entirely disappeared (and how much more secure and at ease this is than Sinatra's persistent hit of the time, "My Way"). It is also damn refreshing to hear a song of love that goes along at its own pace (in a faster tempo than "Honey" - this is the flip side of that in many ways) and is coolly but glowingly happy, instead of miserable and maudlin. Extracting the sweetness in life and teaching the zen of being happy by making others happy - of enjoying the ride, even if he has to hug himself - that is what Martin is doing here, and as it is so many times, it is a stark contrast to the top song, which is one of insecurity, aching and dread. Blessed were those at this time who could live life so easily; whose only needs were a place to eat and store a sleeping bag, catch a passing train and drink the waters of memory.

Just to kiss you
Please come back to me
Hold me tenderly
Take me in your heart again
Be mine my love, forever

Dammi, dammi, dammi tanto amore
Fammi, fammi, fammi questo favore
Dolce come tu ? la giovent?
Primavera sei per me
Vieni su fammi saper
Dammi, dammi solo un p? di speranza
Un bacin da te per me ? bastanza
Ma se nel tuo cor' puoi trovar ancor

Were Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis In Love?

Hey pallies, likes we've not 'nother profoundly provocative Dino-post for all you Dino-philes 'gain this very Dino-day. From the on-line presence of "The Village Voice" by pontificater Mr. Michael Musto comes the Dino-quiry, "Were Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis In Love?

Seems that Musto has got his hands on the Dino and Jerry remembrance, "Everybody Loves Somebody (Especailly Himself)" by Mr. Arthur Marx and Michael quotes Marx sayin' that our Dino and Jerry had "the kind of chemistry that makes for a real love affair."

The Marx publication is one that I have long desired to gets my hands on and read, and this here Dino-prose is goin' get me movin' on that action. Musto's is not the first and will not be the last pallie to ponder the personal relationship between Martin and Lewis and the pages of ilovedinomartin have presented such thoughts before.

Were Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis In Love?
By Michael Musto Thu., Apr. 19 2012

Way before Adam Sandler did wacky comedy movies opposite himself, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were the reigning goofball team of 1950s cinema.

Well, I just dug up a book about the singer/shticker duo by Arthur Marx (son of Groucho), and it points to some real affection that lurked beneath the animosity that ultimately broke them up.

Martin and Lewis, asserts Marx, had "the kind of chemistry that makes for a real love affair."

"The feelings the two of them had for each other during the early days of their romance," he writes, "no doubt stemmed from nothing more than the usual 'latent homosexuality' that psychiatrists claim exists between all close friends of the same sex."

But Marx quotes a source close to the duo saying that this partnership was based on a real infatuation.

"Everything Jerry did was either to amuse or please Dean," he swears. He adds that Jerry craved a laugh from Dean even more than he wanted it from the audience.

The source also says that some of the sketches Jerry wrote for the duo to perform "had a mild homosexual flavor to them"--like one in which Jerry was hurt when, after he cooked a big meal for Dino, the crooner dissed him to go play golf.

"Jerry was always the 'wife' or 'girlfriend' in those situations," writes Marx.

It's so sweet that a Jew and an Italian with fake names could be so deeply, intricately bonded.

Unfortunately, there was one person Jerry Lewis loved even more than Dean Martin, and that was Jerry Lewis!

End of relationship!

I love Dean Martin and good biographies seem to be scarce.

Hey pallies, likes today we turn 'gain to our youthful Idahoian Dino-devotee Miss Pamela Hay and her wild blog, "Adventures of a Wild Woman." Pamela has shared a number of Dino-focused reflections, and today we read her ruminations review of Nick Tosches' Dino-tome, "DINO:Living High In The Dirty Business Of Living."

Faithful readers of ilovedinomartin knows how this pallie feels 'bout Tosches Dino-epic....I simply loves it....and always will....no one or nothin' will ever change my beliefs that this is simply the greatest of the great Dino-writes. But, likes I knows plenty of pallies who dig our Dino who ain't so sold out to Tosches' Dino-reflections.

It appears that Miss Pamela is 'mong those 'cause her thoughts on Nick Tosches' Dino-scribin's are anythin' but complimentary sayin'..."The San Francisco Chronicle was wrong. This book was neither brilliant, nor compelling. Let me tell you why." And, that dear readers is just the beginnin' of her unfavorable remarks.

Well, I ain't gonna try and persuade Miss Pamela of the extraordinary effective efforts that Tosches poured into his Dino-efforts. What I will do is simply repeat remarks I made when asked by our pallies Frank and Joe of "classicmoviechat.com" 'bout my thoughts on Tosches' Dino-bio.....

"Hey pallies Frank and Joe, how great to have you feature my Dino-thoughts in this here post. To me Tosches’ stunnin’ Dino-bio is not the sort of masterpiece that one reads cover to cover likes any ordinary volume.

DINO: Living High In The Dirty Business Of Dreams is our main man’s main book, and I see it as the essential Dino-resource for all Dino-philes to savor and delve deeply into over and over again.

As scriber Nick points out….our Dino is likes the ultimate engima…likes totally totally unknowable, but Tosches does a stellar job of puttin’ the life, times, and teachin’s of our Dino into one portable source. Others have spoken of Tosches havin’ sorta a love/hate relationship with our great man…and I thinks that is perhaps the best way of framin’ his amazin’ work.

In other writin’s on our Dino, Tosches has described our most beloved Dino as “an American Buddha” and I find that a brillant comparison. You may wanna checks out the Dino-amore-day 2012 post at ilovedinomartin tagged Dino-amore Nick Tosches Style where we posted Tosches amazin’ Dino-essay God Created Dean Martin In His Own Image Then Stood Back, which is chapter 27 in Nick Tosches’ Reader. Anyone who questions Tosches devotion to our Dino simply needs to read that amazin’ reflection.

BTW, did you know that DINO: Living High In The Dirty Business Of Dreams won Blender Mag’s top award for greatest Rock and Roll bio of all times? Pallies who shy away from Tosches’ tome simply are afraid of seein’ all sides of our great man’s great life. Those who truly love our Dino loves each and every detail of his amazin’ life journey."

So, you see that truly Miss Pamela and I don't agree on Tosches' tome...but certainly each Dino-holic is entitled to their personal Dino-perspective...and I certainly wants to be far and air other's thoughts on Tosches...and thus today we hear from Dino-digger Miss Pamela.

ilovedinomartin thanks Idahoian Dino-phile Pamela for liftin' up the name of our Dino at her blog and sharin' her personal ponderin's. To view this in it's original format, likes just clicks on the tag of this Dino-message. Dino-always and ever, DMP

Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams by Nick Tosches

The San Francisco Chronicle was wrong. This book was neither brilliant, nor compelling. Let me tell you why.

First off, it was poorly written. Really really poorly written. There was zero continuity and I often found myself rereading passages because I couldn't figure out what in the world the author was talking about.

The f-word was also used way too much for my liking. I understand using it when quoting people (such as Taraborrelli did in Sinatra: A Complete Life), but the author was swearing up a storm. The only purpose I can see behind it is that Tosches was trying to sound like Dean Martin. It just became annoying to me.

On the same note Tosches also spokes for Dean, as if he knew what Dean was thinking as various times in his life. Tosches also states that no one really ever knew Dean. I guess that loops me back to the fact that it was poorly written.

You may be asking yourself why I bothered to finish the book. I had two pretty good reasons. The first one being the I ordered the book through Interlibrary Loan. This means that BYU-Idaho sent out a request for the book to be sent to our library from another library so that I could check the book out. This costs money. It didn't feel right to have them order a book only for me to send it back the next day. The other reason is that I love Dean Martin and good biographies seem to be scarce. I really wanted to learn about him. I'm not sure how much truth I learned, but at least I now have a general idea of his life.

If anyone knows of a better or accurate Dean Martin biography don't keep it to yourself!

and Dean Martin (has a cigarette ever looked any cooler?).

Hey pallies, likes her tag is Bonnie and she pontificates at her blog pad with the unique title, "bringyournose." (to read her explanation of said tag, clicks on the title of this Dino-gram to goes there.)

Anywho, in her post, "California dreamin'," Miss Bonnie speaks of bein' a Pennsylvania youngin' who at the age of 7 was transplanted to Cali for a few years 'cause of her father's employment. And, likes as you will read below, durin' her stay in Cali her parents took her fam to "many celebrity tennis and golf tournaments" where they snapped some great pixs of the rich and famous....includin', of course, our Dino.

When the pallies at Google blog search sent me to "bringyournose"...and I saw this oh so evocative, candid Dino-pose snapped by someone in Bonnie's family, likes pallies I was simply and totally in Dino-awe. Seein' our most beloved Dino surrounded by such adorin' chicks with his ever-present cigarette signin' 'graphs for all those ladies..likes I was thrilled to find this great Dino-moment captured for time and eternity! And, the profoundly provocative comment by Miss Bonnie, "and Dean Martin (has a cigarette ever looked any cooler?) speaks voluminous volumes 'bout our amazin' King of Cool!

Below is a wee bit from Miss Bonnie's post with said Dino-pix and Dino-comment. If likes you wanna reads more, just clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram. Hats off to Miss Bonnie for sharin' this outstandin' Dino-moment with all her readers and addin' to the Dino-pleasure of all us Dino-philes! Dino-always and ever, DMP

But it was here, in the Hollywood Riviera, during the years from about 1970-1973 that the magic of Hollywood became my reality.

My parents took us to many celebrity tennis and golf tournaments. At the time, while I had fun getting autographs and having my picture taken, I had no idea that these “celebrities” were actually Hollywood icons–legends–or would become so, anyway. I was not star struck at the time (except maybe for Bobby Sherman, my first love). But recently, I asked my parents if I could borrow our old celebrity album. And I was most definitely star struck in retrospect.

.....unheard material from the King of Cool continues to be discovered.

Hey pallies, likes as I said yesterday, the 'net is literally explodin' with pads proclaimin' the cool news that "Collected Cool" is comin' our way in mid June. Likes I hadn't planned to file a third report on this stunnin' Dino-treasure comin' our way, that was, until I happened on Mr. Joe Marchese "opinin'" at the music blog, "The Second Disc."

As memory serves me correct, it was Marchese who did such a groovy job last year 'bout this time when Dean Martin: Cool Then, Cool Now was bein' 'nounced to the Dino-world...and indeed Mr. Joe himself alludes to his reportin' of said with...

"Reporting in February 2011 about the then-recent Cool Then, Cool Now 2-CD/book box set, this writer opined: “A true career retrospective box with material from each label and era would be essential for those Martin fans looking for more than single-disc compilations but less than 30 discs from Bear Family! How a three- or four-CD treatment in that vein has eluded Martin this long is a mystery.” Now, such a box set is here."

I have no idear whether the pallies in charge of spreadin' the Dino-love 'round actually read Marchese's Dino-suggestion...but indeed with "Collected Cool" we are gettin' just that. And, ilovedinomartin is grateful for pallies likes Mr. Joe Marchese who are so so sold out to our most beloved Dino and are hungerin' and thirstin' for more and more Dino!

The rest of Marchese's thoughts are much along the lines of the other reports, but I am so so glad to see that Mr. Joe makes it clear that a few tracks from disc 3 of our Dino's "Live from Lake Tahoe, July 27, 1962" were "previously released on The Essential Dean Martin: Special Platinum Edition, Capitol 09463 11568 2 7, 2005." And, that Marchese makes clear note that disc 4 DVD of our Dino's 1983 London show has never ever been released to. the general public before.

ilovedinomartin is delighted to share Mr. Joe Marchese's Dino-prose on "Collected Cool" with all youse Dino-holics and we send out our deepest of the deep Dino-appreciato to a man who truly knows, loves, and honors our great man. To view this in it's original format, likes just clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram. Dino-ever and always, DMP

King of Cool: Career-Spanning Dean Martin Box Set “Collected Cool” Coming in June,

Uncut Dino DVDs Arriving in May

How lucky can one guy be? Although Dean Martin’s exhaustive catalogue has been definitively anthologized on four massive box sets released by Germany’s Bear Family label between 1997 and 2001, unheard material from the King of Cool continues to be discovered. Reporting in February 2011 about the then-recent Cool Then, Cool Now 2-CD/book box set, this writer opined: “A true career retrospective box with material from each label and era would be essential for those Martin fans looking for more than single-disc compilations but less than 30 discs from Bear Family! How a three- or four-CD treatment in that vein has eluded Martin this long is a mystery.” Now, such a box set is here.

On June 12, 2012, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) will release Collected Cool, a 3-CD/1-DVD collection that is being touted as the “first and only career-defining box set” for the late and much-loved crooner. It includes selections from his tenures on the Capitol and Reprise labels plus two previously unreleased concerts, one in CD format and one on DVD. The concert CD preserves a 1962 Lake Tahoe show at Cal-Neva Lodge in full; only selected tracks have been made available in the past. The DVD jumps forward to 1983 and a London performance at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. This program was aired on cable in 1983 and hasn’t been seen since.

Disc One covers the Capitol Records period between 1949 and 1961 and includes a spoken word introduction taped in 1949. During his fruitful period at Capitol, Martin made a splash with such Italian- flavored songs as “That’s Amore” (a No. 2 hit on the Billboard Hot 100), “Return to Me” (No. 4) and “Volare” (No. 12). This disc’s nineteen tracks also include lesser-known songs like Martin’s homage to his friend Bing Crosby, 1953’s “If I Could Sing Like Bing,” and “My Own, My Only, My All,” one of his very first singles for Capitol. Martin’s film career was in full swing during the Capitol years, and he teams with Jerry Lewis on “Pardners” from their 1956 film of the same name. The theme to 1959’s Rio Bravo (which starred Martin opposite John Wayne and Rick Nelson) has also been included. Frank Sinatra conducted Pete King’s arrangements for Martin’s 1959 album Sleep Warm, and its title track has made the cut.

Hit the jump to explore Discs 2 through 4 of this career-spanning box. You’ll also find a complete track listing with discography! We’ve also got news on the upcoming Uncut release of The Dean Martin Show!

Sinatra, of course, figured prominently in the next stage of Martin’s career. In early 1962, Dino followed his pally to Frank’s newly-formed Reprise label. The Reprise period coincided with Martin’s presence as host of a television variety show, and his visibility in the public eye remained great. At Reprise, he truly proved his staying power when 1964’s “Everybody Loves Somebody” hit No. 1 and knocked The Beatles from that hallowed spot! (It’s heard here in a “stripped down” version which presumably emphasizes Martin’s voice rather than the then-current backing of Ernie Freeman’s arrangement, produced by Jimmy Bowen. It seems that this version will supersede the original on this set.) Also included are his No. 1 Adult Contemporary hits “In The Misty Moonlight,” “In The Chapel In The Moonlight,” “You’re Nobody ’Til Somebody Loves You” and “The Door Is Still Open To My Heart,” which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Guys and Dolls” is a swinging duet with Frank Sinatra, and Martin demonstrates his versatility with 1983’s “My First Country Song” which found him emerging from a studio retirement to duet with Conway Twitty. They were rewarded with a No. 50 C&W placing. It really wasn’t Dino’s first country song, however, as he’d recorded a number of songs with country-style backing for Reprise in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The disc concludes with 1985’s “L.A. Is My Home,” recorded for the MCA label. Oddly, this disc is considerably shorter than Disc 1, with only 15 tracks covering over 20 years of recording.

Disc 3 takes listeners to Lake Tahoe, California’s Cal-Neva Lodge on July 27, 1962. Over 51 minutes, the live disc features a number of tracks of Martin’s comedic banter as well as songs both familiar (“Volare,” “On an Evening in Roma”) and new to Martin (Leslie Bricusse’s “My Kind of Girl,” better associated with Matt Monro). The spirit is freewheeling, with Martin delivering Cole Porter’s “I Love Paris” as the site-specific “I Love Tahoe” for the occasion.

The fourth disc of Collected Cool premieres on DVD an hour-long concert from London’s Apollo Victoria theatre in 1983. This performance originally aired only on Showtime and has not been commercially released until now. Martin revisits old classics like “Everybody Loves Somebody,” “That’s Amore,” “Little Ole Wine Drinker Me” and “Welcome To My World,” sings parodies of “Pennies From Heaven,” “Please Be Kind” and “It’s Magic,” and even dips into the Jim Croce songbook for a favorite of Frank Sinatra’s, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.”

Collected Cool arrives from UMe on June 12. While a hardcore Martin collector will likely already own the Bear Family boxes, the two unreleased discs might make this set a fine companion. (Alas, the first two discs could have contained much more material than 34 tracks; 30 alone fit on Capitol’s recent single-disc The Essential Dean Martin. That said, these are more generous than the 28 tracks over 2 discs on Cool Then, Cool Now.) It can be pre-ordered at the link below!

Fans of Martin (and who isn’t?) might also want to check out the May 22 release of The Dean Martin Variety Show – Uncut, finally bringing complete episodes of Martin’s long-running (1965-1974) NBC variety show to DVD. Two previous 6-DVD boxed collections of The Dean Martin Show were released last year, featuring abr idged versions of 38 episodes. Uncut instead presents six episodes in full, featuring the congenial host mingling with comedians Sid Caesar and Jackie Mason, country music superstar Buck Owens, and Broadway stars Zero Mostel and Tommy Tune, among others. This landmark set, hopefully the first of many to come, arrives in stores on May 22 from Time-Life and can be pre-ordered here.

First Ever Dean Martin Box Set to be Released in June

Thursday, April 12, 2012; 02:04 PM - by BWW News Desk

Dean Martin is one of the greatest recording artists of all time with a career spanning almost 50 years. Martin starred in over 50 films, recorded over 30 original albums and earned a long line of hits with a voice that continues to captivate a steady stream of fans each year. His influence resonates today with the biggest stars and shows taking a page directly from Martin’s style book—from the Don Draper character on TV’s Mad Men to the top of the fashion world with Gucci’s men’s line, and from the movies with the pivotal scene from the Tom Cruise blockbuster Mission: Impossible -Ghost Protocol to the world of song, with the likes of international superstar Robbie Williams.

On June 12, 2012, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) releases Dean Martin – COLLECTED COOL, the first and only career-defining, four-disc box set that combines his biggest hits and signature tunes from both his Capitol Records and Reprise years. Live rarities and spoken word intros make their CD debut including, in its entirety, the rare and unreleased audio recording of his 1962 Lake Tahoe show capturing Martin's unique vocal styling that cemented his reputation as one of the most revered and emulated artists of all time.

COLLECTED COOL also includes a DVD of a live performance filmed at the London Apollo Victoria Theatre in 1983. This show was only aired on cable in 1983 for a brief time and has never been aired or available since then. Martin commands the stage with his own unique and charismatic presence and that’s all captured on this DVD for fans and newcomers alike to experience why Dean Martin still remains a superstar. Musician/Actor Steven Van Zandt commented about Martin, “He was the coolest dude I’d ever seen, period.”

Dean Martin’s early autobiography is as gritty as that of any hip-hop star: delivering bootleg liquor, serving as a speakeasy croupier and blackjack dealer, working in a steel mill, ruling the ring as boxing phenomenon Kid Crochet, and rubbing elbows with members of the nightclub underworld.

Born Dino Paul Crocetti, he soon christened himself Dean Martin. Martin developed his own style, not content to follow the others. He later paired up with comic Jerry Lewis and the comedy duo became the hottest ticket around and parlayed their onstage success into a string of hit movies and television appearances. But Martin was also a formidable solo artist, scoring such hits as “Memories Are Made of This,” “That’s Amore” and “Powder Your Face With Sunshine (Smile! Smile! Smile!)” for Capitol Records; all are represented on this box set.

After Martin and Lewis parted ways, Martin continued to wow crowds in Vegas and impress critics with a series of dramatic film roles, successful TV specials and a consistent string of hit singles and albums. Not long after, Martin’s affiliation with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and the rest of the fabled Rat Pack became a new chapter in his life. He fueled his image as a boozing playboy through onstage antics with his pals in ensemble films like Ocean’s 11 and Robin and His 7 Hoods.

Dean Martin – COLLECTED COOL: Disc one follows Dino’s early rise to stardom and features the best of his Capitol Records years, packed with his biggest hits, signature songs, rarities and career-defining recordings. Included are some of Martin’s most well-known numbers such as “That’s Amore,” an instant classic and one of his most beloved songs that reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100; “Return to Me” which hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100; plus Martin’s signature tunes “Volare” (peaking at No. 12 in 1958), “If I Could Sing Like Bing” (his homage to vocal great Bing Crosby), the stereo version of “On An Evening In Roma,” the ever-popular “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head,” and the unreleased “Dean’s Spoken Word Introductions,” taped in 1949.

In early 1962, Dean Martin left Capitol and began to record for Frank Sinatra’s newly formed label, Reprise Records. Disc 2 features some of Martin’s biggest and most cherished hits from his rich and fruitful Reprise years plus a stripped-down version of the No. 1 hit single “Everybody Loves Somebody,” which originally topped the charts and knocked the Beatles from the No. 1 spot. Also included are his No. 1 Adult Contemporary hits “In The Misty Moonlight,” “In The Chapel In The Moonlight,” “You’re Nobody ’Til Somebody Loves You” and the track “The Door Is Still Open To My Heart,” which also reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other notable highlights include “Guys and Dolls”(featuring Frank Sinatra), the top-10 hit “I Will,” which entered at No. 3 on the Adult Contemporary charts, and his duet with Conway Twitty, “My First Country Song,” which reached the top 50 on Billboard’s Country & Western chart and earned Dean Martin his first ever country hit.

Disc 3 features a rare, live audio recording of Dino’s concert at Cal-Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe, CA, on July 27, 1962. This show captures Martin at the apex of his career, during his post-Capitol years and extremely prolific tenure at Reprise. This performance has never been released in its entirety— only a few tracks were available as bonus material—but it’s now available on this box set. Featured are incredible performances of “Volare,” “On An Evening In Roma,” “It Had To Be You/Nevertheless,” “Beautiful Dreamer” and his only recording of Matt Monro’s hit “My Kind Of Girl.” Dino’s quick wit and sense of humor shines bright through his onstage banter and parodies of classics such as ”I Love Tahoe (Paris)”and “Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes,” all caught on this 51-minute rare recording.

Collected Cool also contains a DVD featuring 60 minutes of live footage from his show at London’s Apollo Victoria theatre show in 1983. This performance originally aired only on Showtime and has never been made commercially available until now. This live concert features Dino performing some of his biggest hits and well-known songs including “Everybody Loves Somebody,” “That’s Amore,” “Little Ole Wine Drinker Me” and “Welcome To My World,” plus classic Martin parodies of “Pennies From Heaven,” “Please Be Kind” and “It’s Magic.”

Dean Martin’s effortless vocalizing has become modern shorthand for cool, as evidenced by the use of his songs in films, television, and ad campaigns, and this box set chronicles one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The Washington Post summed it up by saying,“Somewhere in the public identity of Dean Martin was a kind of essential Everyman of wonder, celebrating the fact that everybody does love somebody sometime, and that we could do worse than raise a glass to joys like that.”

Now I knows for sure that none of us Dino-holics would ever or could ever forget bout' our guy, but thought that perhaps, just maybe, youse pallies might have someone else in mind as youse listen to this very romantico number. I know I do pals. (Don't tell Mrs. G ;)

Wonder if she's readin' this little bit of Dino-patter right now??? Probably not. O well pals...let's imagine that somewhere...somehow...that very special person IS readin' this Dino-patter & happily listenin' to this great great tune & maybe even thinkin' bout you! Enjoy pallies! P.S. What a video!

I Know I Can't Forget lyrics
There were other loves before I found you
And I wish sometimes that we had never met
For life without you darling can never be the same
For having loved you once I can't forget (Forget)

I remember all your smiles and laughter (And laughter)
I remember love light shining in your eyes
And though I only had you for just a little while
When you were there the whole world seemed so right

(All) I remember these things through bitter tears
(All) The touch of your hand in mine
(All) And though you're not here through the lonely years
( From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/d/dean-martin-lyrics/i-know-i-can_t-forget-lyrics.html )
With memories of you I'll never be the alone

There'll maybe other arms to soothe my sadness
There will be other loves that I have never met
But life without you darling can never be the same
For having loved you once I can't forget you

(For life without you darling can never be the same)
For having loved you once
(For having loved you once)
I can't
(I can't)
Forget
(I know I can't I can't forget)

Dean Martin: Singer, Television Star, Movie Actor, Celebrity Role Model and Charming

April 12th, 2012

Dean Martin is aimed at men and women. The men loved him because he had this cool, polite behavior and devil-may-care attitude. Women loved him because he was literally tall, dark and handsome and had that mischievous twinkle in his eyes.

It is often said that Dean as a model that just came out of the fashion magazine for men watched. I remember once heard someone say that Dean looked so comfortable in his tuxedo, as do most to people in their pajamas. Relaxed and charming are two words perhaps, by his personality. In addition, his producer Greg Garrison once said that Dean was a constant smile and what you see is exactly the dean, had what you get.

If anyone wanted to find a celebrity model, it would be Dean. The entertainment industry has always had its share of scandals, but he kept his private life, and certainly not helped them.

Instead, we see a man who was always the man with whom he worked nicely, would be on time for his calls on the stage, and support of other artists who worked with him. Charles Nelson Reilly was a guest on TV show Dean. He said that if they did a comedy sketch and Charles had a good laugh, Dean would repel his way is right for you, Charles.

Dean and his partner Jerry Lewis was one of the best comedy teams ever recorded. The team of Martin & Lewis took 10 years, from 1946 to 1956. Towards the end they were talking to each other little, except when in their action on the stage.

After several films, her own TV show, part of the Colgate Comedy Hour and many nightclub appearances, she called it closes. Her last appearance was as a team on the famous Copacabana in New York.

Even if Dean had a carefree personality and relaxed, it was his own master. For example, it was Dean, ended the comedy act Martin & Lewis. Jerry took over more and more control over their scripts, and Dean had to play the roles that he told was tired. He wanted to make films more seriously. Dean has had enough and said it was the end of their act.

Both Dean and Jerry had their own people management and of course there were some serious money was to give all of their various businesses. Obviously, the lawyers for each team considered it a disaster. Early in the process of sorting the big things in one of the lawyers said Dean, “you can not just walk away from $ 30 million in income,” and Dean replied: “Oh yes, you just look at me.”

Most night clubs and casinos along the west coast and east coast at this time were owned or run by the Mafia. Dean’s friend Frank Sinatra would have to meet before and hang out with some members of the Mafia, but Dean was again his own master. He did very well at will and occasionally would make a special benefit show for them, if asked, but he did not jump through hoops for them.
Another example is when Frank was wanted in a celebratory mood after the show, party-hardy. A number of friends of Frank were “yes men, but Dean was not there. If Frank wanted Dean to hang and party, but Dean and Dean and do not say the catch-up at a later date.

One of Dean’s passion was golf. When to play it the next day he did not stay out late at night when he did begin as soon as possible. Dean’s son Ricci said his father was actually an early riser for most of his professional life. Dean was a really good golfer and plays zero when he was at the top of his game

There were stories about the style of singing that Dean said he was influenced by Bing Crosby. But honestly, is that his main influence was Harry Mills of Mills Brothers. If you were to see a video of the famous singing brothers, it is clear that there are certain similarities between Dean and the style of Harry.

Dean was married three times. His second marriage was to Jane Smith, and took 20 years from 1949 to 1969, when they are separated. The divorce was finalized in 1973. Over the years later they were seen together from time to time and the audience wondered if maybe she wanted back together. Jeanne said in an interview once when Dean entered a room in a function, it was like magic. It seems they still have feelings for Dean.

Jeanne was a devout believer in the family. She took the four children from a previous marriage of Dean to live and stay with them, and I loved each of them with three children she had with Dean.

Dean’s son, Dean Paul was an officer in the Air National Guard in California and died in 1987, crashed when his F-4 Phantom fighter jet army in the mountains of San Bernardino. Many people in entertainment, and friends say that Dean never recovered from the loss of his son.

In 1993, Dean began to deteriorate health, and he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died of acute respiratory failure at home in the morning on Christmas Day in 1995.

How could anyone ever forget a few songs, the melodies of Dean will be forever in our minds. “There Somewhere there is a person” Songs like ‘written by my friend Baker Knight,’ Til someone Nobody Loves You’re, “and his signature song,” Everybody Loves Somebody “, written by Ken Lane, this will be a long time as a time to coming. I still miss him, but Dean still we hear all the songs on their wonderful (smile).

And yes, everyone loves Somebody Sometime, and we all love you, Dean. Good night.
