Below are two delightful pixs of our Dino and Jerry as Father Time and the babe in arms. It seems hard to believe that this pixs were shot to celebrate the comin' of 1952....61-count-em-61 years ago!

How fun to see our most beloved Dino decked out as Father Time...lookin' so wonderfully wise with his long flowin' robe and sickle...and Jerry dressed us as a new born ready to toot his horn....indeed the boys are certainly type cast!

ilovedinomartin wishes all you pallies a swingin' and safe New Year's Eve and the bestest of best New Years! Keeps checkin' in at ilovedinomartin for more great Dino-action in the comin' year....and likes most of all...KEEPS LOVIN' OUR DINO! Dino-celebratin', DMP

Celebratin' Dino-eve with our Dino and his pallies

Hey pallies, likes Dino-winter-month is almost to an end and blends so so coolly into Dino-eve. Today ilovedinomartin shares a totally cool, hip, and oh so randy vid clip from the Dino-show that put the accent on our Dino's partyin' on Dino-eve. Likes who better to celebrate the endin' of the ol' year and the comin' of the new then our swingin' Dino! This clip have been shared here before, but it certainly will continue to puts all us pallies into a very very groovy Dino-eve-mood.

In the vid clip below Frank has been throwin' a NYE party in his hotel suite, where 87 chicks and only two pounds of potato salad have gathered with Sinatra and Martin handlin' the food and females. As Sinatra and our Dino retire to Frank's bedroom they uncover Miss Ruth Buzzi a bit tipsy from an abundance of liquid refreshments. Great fun entails as Mr. Sinatra and Mr. Martin try to rid themselves of the buzzed Buzzi.

So, likes sit backs and enjoy these classic moments from the Dino-show and let the Dino-eve partyin' begins! Dino-lovin', DMP

She's telling me we'll be wed;
She's picked out a king size bed.
I couldn't feel any better or I'd be sick;
Tell me quick, oh ain't love a kick?

Celebrity Grave: "King of Cool" Entertainer Dean Martin 1995

Dean Martin (June 7, 1917 – December 25, 1995) was an American singer, film actor and comedian. Martin's hit singles included "Memories Are Made of This," "That's Amore," "Everybody Loves Somebody," "Mambo Italiano," "Sway," "Volare" and smash hit "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?" Nicknamed the "King of Cool," he was one of the members of the "Rat Pack" and a major star in four areas of show business: concert stage/night clubs, recordings, motion pictures, and television.

Decline and death

On March 21, 1987, Martin's son Dean Paul (formerly Dino of the 1960s "teeny-bopper" rock group Dino, Desi and Billy) was killed when his F-4 Phantom II jet fighter crashed while flying with the California Air National Guard. A much-touted tour with Davis and Sinatra in 1988 sputtered. On one occasion, he infuriated Sinatra when he turned to him and muttered "Frank, what the hell are we doing up here?" Martin, who always responded best to a club audience, felt lost in the huge stadiums they were performing in (at Sinatra's insistence), and he was not the least bit interested in drinking until dawn after their performances. His final Vegas shows were at the Bally's Hotel in 1990. It was there he had his final reunion with Jerry Lewis on his 72nd birthday. Martin's last two TV appearances both involved tributes to his former Rat Pack members. In 1990, he joined many stars of the entertainment industry in Sammy Davis, Jr's 60th anniversary celebration, which aired only a few weeks before Davis died from throat cancer. In December 1990, he congratulated Frank Sinatra on his 75th birthday special. By 1991, Martin had unofficially retired from performing.

Martin, a life-long smoker, died of acute respiratory failure resulting from emphysema at his Beverly Hills home on Christmas morning 1995, at the age of 78. The lights of the Las Vegas Strip were dimmed in his honor. He is buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park.

Twas the night before Christmas
at the Dean Martin pad
chicks and pallies were groovin'
the music was rad.

Martinis were pourin'
shaken not stirred
Dino's "White Christmas'
was all that was heard.

The stockings were stuffed
with vodka and gin
Ol' blue eyes and Sammy
just stumbled in.

The boys in their tuxes
broads wrapped in their minks
Sir Dino was mixin'
some holiday drinks.

Then up on the roof
they heard a hell of a smash
Sammy yelled out
"Hey man, Santa just crashed!"

Frank invited him in
for a drink and a smoke
Santa said "Sure!
I'll take a rum and a coke!"

A bundle of booze
he had on his back
the tag on the bag
said "For the Rat Pack"

Dean gave Jeannie her gift
"To the one I love most"
"It's just what I wanted,
The Dean Martin Roasts!"

Dino caught Santa's eye
and gave him a wink
straightened his bow tie
and finished his drink.

The party still swingin'
Dino snuck up to bed
while visions of showgirls
danced in his head.

As St. Nick jumped in his sleigh
and rose to the heavens
They all gathered round'
to watch "Ocean's Eleven".

But they heard him exclaim
as he flew through the sky
"Merry Christmas Dino Crocetti,
your my kinda guy!!!"

I remember when I first really started to love Dino....

Hey pallies, likes as I was reflectin' on what ruminations that I wanted to leave with you that woulda be the most Dino-honorin' as we pay tribute to our most beloved Dino's departure from our planet, I came back time and time 'gain to the words of a quite recent post here at ilovedinomartin...words from a quite new Dino-devotee, words that are brief in number and simple in thought...but words that speak volumes of a young man's adulation of our King of Cool.

What ilovedinomartin has selected to share with all youse Dino-philes are the thoughts of Mr. Richard L. Sykes, thoughts first shared at ilovedinomartin on October 9 of this very Dino-year. I remember that I was usin' google blog search and insead of puttin' Dean Martin into the search engine I typed Dino Martin in, and I struck paydirt. One of the first posts listed sent me to Mr. Sykes self-tagged blog where he had boldly posted his great devotion to our great man.

Richard is a Deanager in the true sense of the word.....a teenager in his first year of college who less then a year ago got turned on to our Dino via a Rat Pack vid posted on his blog. Well as you will read below it didn't take any more then that for Sykes to be likes totally totally smitten by our Dino.

Likes as I said above Richards words are brief in number and simple in thought...but words brimmin' with the deepest, purest, and truest devotion to our Dino. Words that are worthy of a fit and proper tribute to our most beloved Dino as we honor his departure from our presence on December 25, 1995.

When Dino died, Mr. Sykes was truly a babe in arms...couldn't been more then a year or two old....yet such is the tramsformin' power of our Dino that once Richard got turned on to Dino, his Dino-adulation is supreme.

Here are a few of Mr. Sukes' Dino-homagin' words...

"I cannot even begin to describe how much i love this artist. He’s the best, the classiest, most talented man to have enver lived."

"The way he sang, the swave of his voice, the smooth classy feel to him brought chills to my spine."

"I remember at that moment, I wanted to be him, and ever since that, I have promised myself that I would transform myself to a man of his caliber."

Gotta tells you pallies that Richard's reflections brings "chills to my spine" when I think of the impact that our Dino is havin' on the life of 'nother new generation of Dino-devotees.

When I wrote Mr. Sykes 'bout my appreciato for his Dino-passion and that his homagin' of our Dino was bein' shared at ilovedinomartin, I was thrilled to hear his very humble response....

Dino Martin Peters,

I truly appreciate your comments and your love for Dino. I am humbled by your page on my post and I am truly thank ful for your praise.

With much appreciation,

Richard

Likes as I said pallies, I just knew that Sykes' post was the best to post in 2012 as ilovedinomartin honors our Dino on Dino-winter-day 2012. Deep Dino-appreciato to Mr. Richard L. Sykes for his candid contribution to heart-felt homagin' of our most beloved Dino. To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram. Dino-devotedly, DMP

btw pallies, I've likes been waitin' forever to post this stunnin' pix of our Dino...likes don't have a clue where it was taken or when, but I loves seein' our Dino in that cool cool Dino-pose....so so much remeindin' me of how scriber Nick Toshes tagged our Dino, "The American Buddha."

Dean “Dino” Martin

I cannot even begin to describe how much i love this artist. He’s the best, the classiest, most talented man to have enver lived. Okay that might be opionated slightly but I think many would agree that Martin is a class act. I remember when I first really started to love Dino, it wasn’t even a year ago when I clicked on a video posted on my blog. The video was of the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin) playing at a gig with Ed Sulliven. The way he sang, the swave of his voice, the smooth classy feel to him brought chills to my spine. I remember at that moment, I wanted to be him, and ever since that, I have promised myself that I would transform myself to a man of his caliber. There are just aren’t enough words to describe it.

I have been a fan of Dean Martin’s my whole life.

Hey pallies, likes today is my last postin' until the day after Dino-winter-day. Tomorrow be sures to likes drop by for a very very special Dino-winter-day version of "Sunday Serenade with Dino," by our very own Dino-holic Danny G. So as we think 'bout that very very bittersweet day, December 25, Dino-winter-day as we tags it 'round this Dino-part, I sure do want to share some special Dino-tribs with you.

Yester-Dino-day through the google blog search, likes came 'cross this fabulous homagin' of our Dino by a dude taged Bill at a great musical blog, "Westwood Valley." As I partook of Bill's Dino-reflections I drank deeply of his deep, pure, and true Dino-devotiion. This Dino-holic begins by 'fessin' up that "I have been a fan of Dean Martin’s my whole life." Seems that like many Bill was raised in a Dino-honorin' home....."The Scratchy 45′s, The Christmas Albums, mom and I used to watch his variety show, and his movies like the Matt Helm series were favorites."

Very very cool that Bill's whole life has been immersed in the life, times, and teachin' of our Dino. I particularly take greet great Dino-delight to know that this guy was hooked on the Matt Helm capers as a youth just as I was. I love, as you will read how Bill elevates our Dino to the top in the Dino vs Frank debate...and likes, of course, I am likes in total total Dino-agreement with him.

And, you simply have to read below 'bout the supreme Dino-dream that Bill had 'round 2004 that involves our great man singin' himself some AC/DC,,,,what a total total gass dudes! Likes I coulda goes on and on 'bout Bill's passion for our King of Cool..but you Dino-philes need to endulge in Bill's Dino-euphora!

ilovedinomartin sez thanks to Mr. Bill for sharin' such a great Dino-tribute with his readership...a trib worthy of sharin' with all you pallies in honor of our Dino-passin' on Dino-winter-day. Bill's Dino-salute shows the depth of devotion that pallies of all ages and stages have for our most beloved Dino and why daily more and more dudes are comin' to know, love, and honor our Dino. Keeps lovin', keeps sharin' our Dino pallies. On this 17th anniversary of our Dino's departure, we contiues to honor his life and legacy of absolute, total cool! Dino-always, ever, and only, DMP

My Musical Evolution – Part 372 21st Century Dean Martin

Posted by Bill Dec 19, 2012

I have been a fan of Dean Martin’s my whole life. Dino was present in The Scratchy 45′s, The Christmas Albums, mom and I used to watch his variety show, and his movies like the Matt Helm series were favorites.

Some people think that Frank Sinatra is voice of the era but I disagree. If you listen to Frank sing and compare it to Dean Martin, you’ll find that Dena is so smooth in his delivery and presence. Franks range is small often forced where Dino’s is effortless and confident. He exudes charisma.

I picked up a few Dean Martin compilation CD’s and found that in addition to a few childhood favorites like Everybody Loves Somebody, there were many more excellent songs. It is difficult to not get caught up in that romantic nostalgia of the late 1930′s and 1940′s.

One night somewhere around 2004 I had this dream of Dean Martin singing in one of those glamorous venues of days gone by. He was singing My Lady Loves To Dance but instead of the actual lyrics, we was singing AC/DC’s You Shook Me All Night Long. It was pretty funny to wake up to.

A guy I know named who was also a Dino fan had several of the DVD’s of Dean’s Variety Show. He let me borrow them and I invited my mother over to watch them with me. It was an enjoyable time for both us. We spent a good part of the show pointing out who was dead and missing that kind of entertainment. Someday I’ll pick up that series. You can find numerous Greatest Hits and Best Of collections just about anywhere. Spend a few bucks and enjoy the King Of Cool.

My Lady Loves To Dance – OK, listen to this melody then imagine Dean singing the words to You Shook Me instead.

Sway – One of my all time favorite Dino tracks

Innamorata – Was the precursor to this that Lady and the Tramp song from My Musical Evolution Part 4?

That Certain Party

Standing On The Corner

You Belong To Me

I really could go on here for way too long so I’m going to stop and encourage you to take a serious listen to Dean Martin.

Stuff that makes us smile: Dean Martin and Rudy the red-beaked reindeer

Hey pallies, likes I knows that I am crammin' quite a number of Dino-grams onto this one Dino-day, but likes ain't gonna be on the 'puter from December 23 through December 25, so I am tryin' to get all this great Dino-devotion out before then. And, likes this next Dino-report is likes just too too cool not to send your Dino-way. From the blog pad of "Oregon Live, scriber Mr. Ryan White tell his readership 'bout his darlin' little "kiddo" who is just 2 1/2 and.... "This is her first Christmas where Christmas is a thing -- a bright, blinking, colorful, festive thing."

And as you read below, Ry has already turned his wee one on to the Dino-seasonal sound...and likes how wondrous is that?!?!?! As White reflects....

"...She's developed a special fondness for "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Better still, she's attached to the Drunk* Dean Martin version recorded for his 1959 record, "A Winter Romance." The one where he sings "Rudy the red-beaked reindeer," and the then slips into something like German. "Won't you guide mein sleigh tonight."

Nothin' quite warms the heart of ilovedinomartin likes hearin' 'bout parents turnin' there tykes onto our most beloved Dino at such a tender age. How fabulous to know that this little "kiddo" will grow up always always knowin' the one we fondly call Dino.

ilovedinomartin salutes Mr. Ryan White for introductin' his little girl to our King of Cool and boldly sharin' this Dino-hearted story with his readership. To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-gram. Dino-delightedly, DMP

Stuff that makes us smile: Dean Martin and Rudy the red-beaked reindeer

By Ryan White, The Oregonian on December 19, 2012 at 3:39 PM

My wife came home a few weeks ago with one of those Golden Books about Mickey Mouse. In it, Mickey gets called out on a stormy Christmas Eve to help deliver the mail in a small plane. Being a stormy Christmas Eve, the plane gets blown off course and Mickey eventually lands at the North Pole where there's no fuel, but there is Santa's old sleigh, some retired reindeer, and a couple of elves willing to lend a hand.

The kiddo is 2 1/2, and loves the book, and in a wonderfully hilarious example of just how impressionable children are, whenever Christmas is mentioned, she says, "I don't want to go out in a storm on Christmas Eve."

No matter how many times I tell her we'll be inside with a fire, cookies, and milk.

This is her first Christmas where Christmas is a thing -- a bright, blinking, colorful, festive thing. A thing with a soundtrack, which makes it even better, and she's developed a special fondness for "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

Better still, she's attached to the Drunk* Dean Martin version recorded for his 1959 record, "A Winter Romance." The one where he sings "Rudy the red-beaked reindeer," and the then slips into something like German. "Won't you guide mein sleigh tonight."

Look at it. She's hugging him. He's ogling a different her. They're all going to end up in that chalet in front of a fire with a bottle of Scotch, three straws, and a bearskin rug. Later, one of them will try to leave and ... "Baby It's Cold Outside."

This just got creepy, didn't it?

*I assume all Dean Martin songs are Drunk Dean Martin songs. And I refuse to believe otherwise. It's better this way.

Dino and Jerry Claus

Hey pallies, likes as I was google imagin' 'way, I came 'cross this Dino-winter-pix that I likes don't ever remember seein' before, and likes just couldn't couldn't resist sharin' it with all you dudes as we march forward to Dino-winter-day. It's our most beloved Dino and Mr. Lewis all dressed up and sportin' santa hats and claus beards.

Our Dino looks likes totally totally hip and with it, as he always always does, but Mr. Lewis appears a tad tired. Any of you pallies likes have any info on the context of this candid Dino-pose? Wishin' all you dudes a wonderful Dino-winter-time full of deep, pure, and true devotion only to our Dino! Dino-delightedly, DMP

Dean Martin had a hit with Let it Snow.

Hey pallies, likes today we gather with pallies from The Waukee version of Patch...doin' a bit of research Waukee is likes in Waukee, IA. Well this branch of Patch has posted a dude tagged Steven Jack's vids of his 10 most fav Songs for the Holidays.

Rightly Mr. Jack has pontificated that, "You're not a true superstar in the world of music until you've made it big with a holiday classic." So, likes indeed by this standard, and of course this is so so true, that our Dino is the superstar of superstars 'cause of the huge huge numero of Dino-winter-croons.

Likes of the many, many Dino-seasonal croons that Steven coulda picked from he has chosen to share our Dino's perfect rendition of "Let It Snow" which you can listen to below. So, likes pallies, if you coulda only pick one Dino-winter-tune as you fav, likes I'm wonderin' which one woulda tops your Dino-list? Gotta 'fess up that for me, my most fav Dino-seasonal song is "Marshmallow World."

A kitchsy Christmas with Dean Martin and friends.

Hey pallies, likes on this 19th day of Dino-winter-month ilovedinomartin shares with you yet 'nother review of the sensational Dino-seasonal DVD release of the 1968 Dean Martin Christmas Special. From the pen of a Gillian Gaar, "Seattle Pop Culture Examiner, commentator, comes her review tagged, "A kitchsy Christmas with Dean Martin and friends."

Well, likes I woulda never ever call our most beloved Dino or any any of his entertainin' "kitchsy," so can't agree with Gaar's thought on that, but likes at least she redeems herself by addin'..."Especially because it’s not trying to be." And, Gillian just can't get into the comedy in this special sayin', "There’s a few too many painfully unfunny skits." Now while the comedy of the Dino-shows have never been my deepest Dino-delight 'cause for me the max Dino-pleasure comes when our Dino sings solo, certainly anythin' our Dino partakes in coulda never ever be "painfully unfunny." So to ilovedinomartin this recent reveiw is mixed at best.

But, ilovedinomartin sez our thanks to Gillian Garr and the other pallies at the Seattle branch of the "Examiner" for makin' their readership fully Dino-aware of this most recent Dino-release. Any pallies who lift up the name of our Dino and spread the Dino-word are cool in the eyes of ilovedinomartin. To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of these here Dino-reflections. Dino-always, only, and ever, DMP

A kitchsy Christmas with Dean Martin and friends

Dean Martin

Making spirits bright: Dean Martin

The Dean Martin Christmas Show, newly reissued by Time Life on DVD, is a kitschy delight. Especially because it’s not trying to be.

Dean Martin’s Christmas specials were a natural outgrowth of his TV series, The Dean Martin Show. This particular special first aired on December 19, 1968. There’s a few too many painfully unfunny skits, involving Martin and guest stars Bob Newhart and Dom DeLuise, so you’ll want to fast forward to the music numbers: Martin crooning through “It’s a Marshmallow World,” and cuddling up to his backing dancer/singers, the Golddiggers, for “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and a “Daddy” medley of “Daddy,” “True Love,” and “We Wish You the Merriest.”

Martin then introduces special guest star Dennis Weaver, who gamely warbles his way through “The Marvelous Toy,” with everyone joining in for a final medley of “Deck the Halls,” “Joy to the World,” and “Silent Night.” Most interesting is the final spot, where Martin and 39 other stars announce which children’s hospitals across the nation will be receiving a visit from St. Nick. It’s fun to see the range of folks, including William Holden, Lucille Ball, Tony Bennett, and Roy Rogers, among other, in this sequence.

Unfortunately, there are no extras; it’s simply the 48-minute special, with no commentary or anything else. Still, it would make a fun backdrop to your holiday bash.

Danny G's Sunday Serenade with Dino: "Marshmallow World"

Man o man pallies...thins' are lookin' & feelin' more & more wintery round' good ol' Boston everyday! I'm REALLY gettin' into that "Dino-ee" kinda mood now pals!

This week's "o so cool" Serenade is DEF one of my winter favs, and as we are "o so quickly" approachin' Dino Winter Day...I simply can't get myself nuf' of these classic Dino Winter tunes!!!

"Marshmallow World" is just what we need pals. Reminds us not to take life so so seriously. Have fun! Enjoy life! Have a drink...or two! Take a breather every now & then pallies! Be like Dean & Frankie! Just look at ALL the fun they is havin' actin' completely silly & care-free! Sometimes we might get caught-up with life's nonsense. Remember what Dean's tellin' us pals..."It's time for play...it's a whipped cream day!" Ha ha ha!!!

I'm lovin' this time of year! Enjoy ourselves while we're here ...that's what Dino would want! Ha ha ha!!! Ciao pallies!

It's a marshmallow world in the winter
When the snow comes to cover the ground
It's the time for play, it's a whipped cream day
I wait for it the whole year round.

Those are marshmallow clouds being friendly
In the arms of the evergreen trees
And the sun is red like a pumpkin head
It's shining so your nose wont freeze.

The world is your snowball, see how it grows
Thats how it goes whenever it snows
The world is your snowball just for a song
Get out and roll it along

It's a yum-yummy world made for sweethearts
Take a walk with your favorite girl
It's a sugar date, what if spring is late
In winter it's a marshmallow world.

"Marshmallow World" is a song that's been covered by a lot of folks, but I feel like the Dean Martin version is the gold standard.

Hey pallies, likes dudes it was January 21 of this very Dino-year 2012 when likes for the first time ilovedinomartin quoted Winston Churchill when he said, "All good things come to those who stand and wait." The reason for the quotation then was 'cause after waitin' for likes what seemed likes forever, I stumbled 'cross a review of "Airport" that was truly worthy of our Dino. You may or may not recall that Mr. Matt Cale scribed, MASTERS OF DISASTERS: DEAN MARTIN IN AIRPORT. I had been waitin' for years to read a smart----a cool, hip, and ever randy Dino-centered review of his big screen epic performance in Alex Haley's "Airport," and Cale's contribution was likes totally totally on the Dino-mark.

Well today, ilovedinomartin 'gain quotes from Mr. Churchill that indeed, "All good things come to those who stand and wait." This time 'round we repeat statesman's Churchill's remarks 'cause after tons of time passin' by, ilovedinomartin has happened on a smart----a cool, hip, and every randy Dino-centered review of this Dino-holic's fav of fav Dino-seasonal croons, "Marshmallow World"...and likes dudes I am likes totally totally smitten!

From the musical pad, "Progressive Boink," comes "Progressive Boink Holiday Mixtape: Dean Martin's 'Marshmallow World.'" Scribed by a Miss Emily Rowley, it is so so coolly written...truly worthy words for our King of Cool. Likes all you pallies are simply gonna haves to take the time to review Miss Rowley's reflections on this awesome Dino-winter croon, but likes here is a wee sample of Emily's devotion to our most beloved Dino...."Seriously, doesn't Dean Martin seem like the kind of dude who would've made you swallow his pinky ring for correcting him on the color of the sun?"

Anywho dudes, likes it goes without sayin' that ilovedinomartin is in Dino-heaven to have the likes of Miss Emily Rowley spreadin' the Dino-word in this way to all Progressive Boink's readership. ilovedinomartin 'pressed our deepest of deep Dino-appreciato to Rowley for her remarkable randy remarks on our Dino's croonin' of "Marshmallow World." To checks this out in it's original form, simply clicks on the tag of these Dino-thoughts. Dino-always, ever, and only, DMP

Progressive Boink Holiday Mixtape: Dean Martin's 'Marshmallow World.' By Emily Rowley on Dec 11

A slurring tribute to confectionery winter vistas with a questionable understanding of how color works.

90% of Christmas music tends to fall pretty easily into just a few set categories. You have your Grade School Essentials, songs like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" or "Frosty the Snowman." These are songs so ingrained in the cultural lexicon that you don't even necessarily need to hear them at Christmastime, you're just kind of always hearing them in your head anyway. Or maybe I just have a really jolly form of schizophrenia? Anyway. Then you have the Standards, your "White Christmas" or "I'll Be Home for Christmas." These tend to get covered on basically every Christmas album, but are most often associated with someone like Bing Crosby or Andy Williams.

Next you have what I call, "The Non-Radios." This can cover both your instrumentals or your more overtly religious tunes. That's not to say you won't ever hear them on the radio, or on a CD, or blaring through the speakers at Home Goods while you ogle fancy olives, but are really should only be enjoyed live. Like, have you ever heard a version of "Silent Night" on the radio and thought, "damn, son! Turn that ethereal shit up!" No, of course not. "Silent Night" is best enjoyed in a church, being sung by a nine year-old with the voice of an angel. That's just math.

Acceptable Contemporary is pretty self-explanatory, but there really isn't much meat on the bone when it comes to essential Christmas songs from the last 30 years. Bill has already covered the best of these offerings. Honestly, one's feelings on Acceptable Contemporary tend to hinge entirely on their feelings about Wham's "Last Christmas," aka, "The Most Divisive Christmas Song of All Time." If you're like me, you love it and listen to it approximately 973 times every year.

If you're not, you're probably in your icy lair plotting to steal the last can of Who Hash.

Finally, you have the Novelty Hits. They . . . well they are what they are. You either want a hippopotamus for Christmas, or you don't. For me, my favorite holiday songs usually fall into a pretty strange niche. They tend to be older, but slightly less ubiquitous. Like the dumb rube cousins to the songs you would find in the Standards category. I'm talking about your "Christmas Island" or your "Suzy Snowflake." These are the songs you only learn exist after watching the Sounds of the Seasons channel for eight straight hours while sitting around in your jingle jammies obsessively scrolling through the Benedict Cumberbatch tag on Tumblr. I mean cleaning your house. I mean doing science experiments.

"Marshmallow World" is a song that's been covered by a lot of folks, but I feel like the Dean Martin version is the gold standard. I base this on nothing, because I couldn't take two seconds to look it up because SERIOUS JOURNALISM, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that Dino recorded this towards the end of his career. I say this because he sounds SUPER DRUNK through the entire song. And this is on the Dean Martin Scale of Relative Drunkenness, where if a 1 is cirrhosis for a normal human, Dean's still at like an 8. I know staggering drunk was kind of his whole schtick, but he usually had his shit together better than this.

Dean's slurring so badly on this track that it sounds like it's being played at half-speed. And that's before he starts just talking gibberish about how, "the sun is red, like a pumpkin head," a line I assume he just made up on take 75 and the booth guy left in because he wanted to get home to see his family. Seriously, doesn't Dean Martin seem like the kind of dude who would've made you swallow his pinky ring for correcting him on the color of the sun? Now that I've said it I'm almost positive it probably happened.

The best part of the song is when, after singing about how awesome and fluffy winter is, he just randomly throws out, "WHAT IF SPRING IS LATE?!" Like . . .I don't know? You'll have to wait to plant string beans? Jerry Lewis will see his shadow and scurry back into his tree stump? I'm pretty certain you live in Vegas, so the point seems moot.

Enjoy Dean Martin’s ‘A Winter Romance‘

Hey pallies, likes on this fourteenth day of Dino-winter-month ilovedinomartin takes you to a way cool Brit Chick pad tagged "femguide" where Miss Rachel has shared a marvelously magical musical review of our Dino's first ever winter tunes al-b-um.

Likes of course that woulda be none other then the 1959 release of that randy record, "A Winter Romance." Rachel is obviously someone who totally digs the Dino-sound and as you read her scribin' it will become likes very obvious that this is one young lady who is truly in-theiDino-know! Likes here is just a couple of her numerously nuanced Dino-thoughts....

"Martin was known for his easy charm and somewhat boozy performances, and he set women’s hearts on fire the world over."

"Your mother especially might appreciate a Dean Martin CD as he was something of a heartbreaker with the ladies during his day!"

One of the coolest thin's 'bout this review dudes is that reviewer Rachel shares quite a bit of Dino-details 'bout the various releases of this record...and, likes gotta 'fess up that I never knew these important Dino-facts before. And, this remarkable Rachel lady a absolutely fab job of encouragin' her readership to gift others with this classic classey Dino-al-b-um.

So pallies in this grand Dino-season, sits yourself down and immerse yourself in Miss Rachel's refreshin' remarks on our most beloved Dino's very beloved winter croons, "A Winter Romance." Kudos mucho to Miss Rachel and the pallies at "femguide" for bein' the guidin' star to the Dino-light for their readership sure to make many Brit Chicks devotees of our great man. In Deep Dino Devotion, DMP

Enjoy Dean Martin’s ‘A Winter Romance‘

Dean Martin was a legendary actor and performer that was part of the 1960’s so-called Rat Pack, frequently performing with Frank Sinatra, Joey Bishop, and Sammy Davis, Jr. Martin was known for his easy charm and somewhat boozy performances, and he set women’s hearts on fire the world over. He starred or costarred in dozens of films and his unique and personal style behind the microphone earned him over a dozen hit singles during his career.

December 13, 2012 by Rachel

In 1959 Martin released a holiday-themed album, his first to feature holiday songs, titled ‘A Winter Romance.‘ The album features traditional Christmas classics performed by Martin in his standard loose and light style. It too was an instant hit with a full orchestra in the background and quickly became a best seller.

Songs on the Album Include

A Winter Romance

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

The Things We Did Last Summer

I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm

June in January

Canadian Sunset

Winter Wonderland

Out in the Cold Again

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

White Christmas

It Won’t Cool Off

When the CD was rereleased in 1989, there was a thirteenth track added to the album, ‘The Christmas Blues.‘ In 2005 the CD was again released and they added another four tracks:

Meanderin’

Sogni d’Oro

Go Go Go Go

Buttercup of Golden Hair

Martin was a favorite during the mid-1960s and a voice that has lasted through decades. This CD may be a great choice for adding some personality to your winter celebration this year. You might consider mixing up the music with other favorite performers from mid-century, including Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, or even some music from the Motown era. Folk music was also popular during the 1960s so you might add Dean Martin’s music with recordings from The Mamas and the Papas or Bob Dylan.

The CD might also make a great gift item for your parents or grandparents if they loved music from this time period and often talk about the Rat Pack. The music might take them back to that time period when people still dressed for dinner and music still included a full orchestra! Your mother especially might appreciate a Dean Martin CD as he was something of a heartbreaker with the ladies during his day!

Check out ‘A Winter Romance‘ this season for your home or as a gift idea. It can be just what you need to add some whimsy and fun to your holiday and to create a true classic Christmas setting for your home.

Dream With Dean: Dean Martin’s Fireside-Martini Album

Hey pallies, likes dudes, here's 'nother real sweet Dino-treat for this Dino-iday season. Likes this doesn't happen anywhere near as often as ilovedinomartin woulda likes, but likes every so often we finds a public education source that has so so wisely put the accent on our most beloved Dino...and that pallies is the platform of today's Dino-reportin'.

From the web home of Indiana Public Media comes the news (likes sorry to be so late in sharin' it) that Afterglow, "a weekly one-hour radio program of jazz and American popular song hosted by David Brent Johnson and produced by WFIU Public Radio," has created a programme homagin' none other then our King of Cool.

Mr. Johnson chose to center his mid November 2012 episode of "Afterglow" on our great man's great '64 "laidback martini-at-the-fireside album," "Dream With Dean." From Mr. J's comments it is crystal clear that he is a true knower of our Dino! And likes what a wonderful wonderful thin' to have the swingin' music of our swinger Dino bein' distributed over the airwaves of Indiana's Public Radio!!! This certainly ain't gonna hurts the cause of more and more pallies comin' to know, love, and honor our Dino.

Dream With Dean: Dean Martin’s Fireside-Martini Album

By David Brent Johnson

Posted November 16, 2012

In 1964 Dean Martin recorded a laidback martini-at-the-fireside album that included the original version of a song that would soon become his signature tune.

Dino sings for dreamers: Martin strikes a reflective pose.

Dream With Dean is singer Dean Martin’s excursion into late-night lounge ballads, with the vocalist accompanied by a jazz rhythm section made up of guitarist Barney Kessel, pianist Ken Lane, bassist Red Mitchell, and drummer Irv Cottler. Dream With Dean would be released almost simultaneously in 1964 with Everybody Loves Somebody, another Martin album that featured a more conventional orchestra-and-backup singers setting for the vocalist. Both albums would stay on the charts for a combined 80 weeks. Dream With Dean‘s laidback context makes it an album that liner note writer Stan Cornyn said will “relax you like sloe gin after a fast night.”

Other artists featured on the program include James Carter, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Dexter Gordon, and Rene Marie.

Hey pallies, likes today's Dino-winter-month Dino-salute is very very short, but oh so so very very sweet dudes. From the pallies at google came a Dino-'lert to a Dino-pix postin' at flickr. "My dad loved Dean Martin and was forever whistling or singing or humming his tunes."

Hey pallies, likes here's a real Dino-treat of a Dino-seasonal post from a blog tagged "Baby Budgeting" where a Brit lady tagged Becky holds forth. Miss Becky is a mum of 2 and a parenting author. I write about creative family life and living well on less."

Seems that Miss Becky likes many of the rest of us loves shoppin "local charity shops" for great bargains and her recent post, "A Classic Christmas Record for £1.50" relates 'bout a real Dino-gem that she scored on a recent bargain huntin' binge. What Miss Becky uncovered was an al-b-um tagged "White Christmas" that shares croons by none other then our Dino and Mr. Nat King Cole.

What makes Miss Becky's purchase so so special is that, as she scribes, "My dad loved Dean Martin and was forever whistling or singing or humming his tunes. I think he fancied himself one of the rat pack. This gorgeous record reminds me of my dad."

How heartwarmin' to hear 'nother real life story of how our Dino brings back wonderful memories of a loved one. Likes our great man continues to create great memories between generations. And how wonderful that Miss Becky is passin' the love of our Dino on to her wee ones through the sharin' of these Dino-croons!

For some reason dudes, likes I gotta 'fess up that after tryin' numerous times, for some reason I just couldn't get the pix of the Dino-al-b-um to get turned straight...indeed it is straight up in the original post, but for some unusual reason it got turned sideways when I copied it.

Hats off to Brit Becky for sharin' her Dino-treasure and her father's love of our Dino with her readership, and for her passin' on that Dino-devotion to her little ones. To view this in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-gram. Dino-delightedly, DMP

A Classic Christmas Record for £1.50

December 3, 2012

By Becky

Oh how I love to browse my local charity shops.

Mostly my eagle eye is on designer clothes at bargain prices or brand new and sealed items that make marvellous gifts. Sometimes however I find treasure. This week I definitely found treasure.

My dad loved Dean Martin and was forever whistling or singing or humming his tunes. I think he fancied himself one of the rat pack. This gorgeous record reminds me of my dad.

It is perfect there is not a mark on it and it features Nat King Cole who gives me warm fuzzy feelings when he sings.

I popped it on my little record player which bemused the kids completely (I don’t think they had seen it before and they could not understand it!) These songs are fun, classic, sweet and simple. They make me think of snow and family, chestnuts and tradition. They make me think of my childhood and simpler days.

What a wealth of memory and feeling for just £1.50. I even baked shortbread listening to it – and I haven’t done that for a few years!!

Oh the treasures you can find in a charity shop. You don’t need to spend much to bring something new (and old) into your life. Being preloved sometimes makes it even more special.

So don't fear pals...don't fret...What do we care if those icicles form...We gots our Dean to keep us warm! Enjoy!!!

The snow is snowing and the wind it is blowing
But I can weather the storm
What do I care how much it may storm
I've got my love to keep me warm

I cannot remember a worse December
Just watch the icicles form
What do I care if icicles form
I've got my love to keep me warm

Off with my overcoat off with my gloves
Who needs an overcoat I'm burning with love
My heart's on fire and the flame grows higher
So I will weather the storm
What do I care how much it may storm
I've got my love to keep me warm

I thought you ought to know my heart's on fire
The flame it just leaps higher
So I will weather the storm
Why do I care how much it storms
I've got my love
To keep me warm
I've got my love to keep me warm

The Return Of Dean Martin

That was “Return To Me,” a huge hit for Dean Martin in 1958, reaching No.3 on the Australian charts. Quite a big hit, and quite a surprise hit too, returning Dean to the top of the charts, at a time when he might have been expected to fade away from the pop charts.

Okay, I admit, considering “Return To Me” as being a comeback for Dean Martin might be a bit of a stretch. I mean, his last Number One had been only two years prior. But certainly, it was a bit of surprise. Certainly, 1958 was not like 1954, when Dean Martin had covered the charts in Italian weddings and wine and pizza pies, and had had two Number Ones with the stuff!

Since then pretty much all of the tuxedo wearing pop stars of that age, only four years prior, had disappeared from the face of the Earth…Frankie Laine was fading from the pop charts. So was Tony Bennett. As was PattiPage. And Rosemary Clooney. Even Nat “King” Cole was coming to the end of a decade of chart dominance. The kids had taken over, and if you were a grown-up and your name wasn’t either Frank Sinatra or Perry Como, and you were over 30 years of age, then you really didn’t have a chance. Actually, come to think of it, even Frank was beginning to struggle on pop charts (even though he was in the middle of his run of classic albums)

And Dean was 40! And had just split with his movie partner, Jerry Lewis, a partnership that was behind the reason that he was famous in the first place. And given Dean’s tendency to sing as though he was drunk even when he wasn’t doing it on purchase, there was some debate over whether Dean was even talented or not. So with teenagers doing most of the record buying in 1958, and old crooners out of fashion, he didn’t really have a chance.

At least in theory.

But theories can be wrong.

Because he was Dean, the coolest man ever to put on a tuxedo… and he had Frank Sinatra in his corner to help him out.

Dean Martin was the ying to Sinatra’s yang, as can be seen by a quick comparative analysis. Whereas Sinatra was serious about singing and claimed to have meant every word that he sang, Dean was a constant joker, from whom nothing could be taken serious. Sinatra attempted to turn crooning and crooners and the wearing of a tuxedo into an art form. Dean turned it into a joke. Of course crooning had arguably always been a joke, ever since Bing mumbled his first “dooby dooby doo,” but Dean took the ingredients that made crooning appealing – the ability of a little softly spoken mumble to get the girls excited, without even trying to – and took them to their ultimate conclusion.

That took a little time. In 1958, Dean was still putting all the pieces together. He hadn’t quite mastered his persona of being permanently drunk yet, but he’d certainly mastered the persona of being a ladies man. Of being a man that no woman could resist. The hope being that men who wanted to be the kind of men that no woman could resist, would rush to buy his records, just in order get a few tips for their seduction technique.

For men like the idea that there are men out there who are living the dream and have a harem at their command. Particularly in the 1950s, a time when there appears to have been a lot of men who were rather attracted to the idea that somewhere out there, there was somebody who was having a lot of sex. This was the era after all that gave the world both James Bond and Hugh Hefner (Dean Martin was practically a singing James Bond). Between the three of them they probably had sex with every young attractive female the world had to offer. They were middle aged, sophisticated, and still living the life of a swinging bachelor (Dean himself was in the middle of his second marriage by this stage, but that’s only a minor detail. To his fans around the world, he was the ultimate womanizing bachelor, and living the dream.

Speaking of dreaming, not only did Dean Martin turn the art of crooning into a joke, he virtually turned the art of seduction into a joke as well. Just listen to the title track of his dream themed “Sleep Warm” album. Try to listen to a line like “ rest your head on the pillow/ what a lucky… pillow” are try to take it seriously. Hell, just look at the cover, featuring Dino’s big face hovering over a woman sleeping blissfully, as if he were a guardian angel looking over a sleeping baby, like in those framed pictures sitting on the bedside table of every good Catholic child.

“Sleep Warm” was only one of a series of albums, or specifically, album covers, in which Dean Martin parodies his position as a sex god for the more mature woman, a series of albums in which Dean is surrounded by ladies with large pointy breasts, of the kind that appear to have been quite common in the 1950s, back when bras tended to look more like torpedoes.

Let’s take the cover of “Pretty Baby” for example, in which a buxom blonde is cheeking Dean out, whilst Dean, powerless to the power of his own charms, raises an eyebrow to the camera.

In “A Winter’s Romance”, Dean even turned a Christmas album into an opportunity for a threesome, flirting with two sexy ladies simultaneously.

Within the album itself is a rendition of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” in which instead of singing with a single lady, he flirts with an entire ladies chorus, but suggestion being that he is trying to seduce all of them. Whether he succeeded or not almost doesn’t matter: the point is that Dean was the kind of man who would even try to seduce an entire ladies chorus.

Sadly, none of these albums, and nothing from these albums, actually managed to become sizable hits. What did sell however, were records in which he played on his other major strength: that of being the premier Italian pop star of his time.

Other pop stars – in fact, the vast bulk of the crooning profession – were Italian, but in the case of Frank Sinatra for example, you sometimes had to be reminded of their Italian heritage, buried as it was under his other identity as an American icon. Dino on the other hand, probably lived on nothing but his mothers’ pizza and pasta. And wine.

And so his big comeback hit, “Return To Me” seemed to have been recorded whilst sitting at a café in Naples. With a gypsy violinist hanging around in the background. That’s pretty Italian. And then it gets even more Italian by actually singing in Italian, and you can’t get much more Italian than that.Dean Martin songs were beginning to become more full of Italian clichés than your average television advertisement for pasta sauce. Sometimes it seemed as though Dean was satirizing the entire concept of being Italian. And what better way of celebrating his Italian heritage, than by singing the Italian entrant into Eurovision that year? Even though it lost (it came third)

“Volare” was a perfect song for Dean, being built around a giant chorus that was easy to sing when you were drunk – even the “ooooh”s sound as though he is falling over - of the kind that Dean had already experience in taking to Number One, twice, back in 1954, with “Sway” and “That’s Amore.” And so it gave him another Number One!

Dean also sings “Volare” like a native Italian speaker, but one who realizes that some of the words sound funny to the English speaking ear. Words like “nel blu, dipinto di blu.”

But Dean never got more Italian than he did with his next hit “On An Evening In Roma”, so cue another round of Italian stereotypes, thus fuelling rhymes such as “do they take them for espresso/ yeah I guess so”, not to mention television appearances featuring Dean looking ridiculous in a puffy shirt.

“On An Evening In Roma” reached No.26 on the Australian charts in September 1959, thus allowing Dino to finish off the decade in reasonably respectable form, so that, by the end of the 1950s, at a time when large segments of the crooning community were in trouble on the charts, Dean was in a pretty decent position. He may not have been the biggest crooner in the world (that was probably be his friend Frank, or maye Perry Como), and he certainly wasn’t the best (that, again, would be Frank), but he was certainly the most fun and entertaining. Perfect credentials therefore for joining Frank Sinatra’s new gang and holing up in Las Vegas for the duration of the 1960s.
