Hey pallies, likes speakin' of our most beloved Dino's greatest of great big screen perfect performance in "Rio Bravo" yesterday, we find it incredibly intriguin' to be able this very Dino-day to share a ravin' review of our Dino in "Rio Bravo" that just recently came our way from the fine pallies at "Twingly Blog Search."
Likes from a most interestin'ly tagged Swedish blog "1001 räkor"...which translates into English as "1001 Shrimp." comes a post by blogger "misterfisk" titled "352: Rio Bravo," that proclaims as you will note by the tag of this post, " Dean Martin's role is to me the only reason to see Rio Bravo"....which to our way of thinkin' is the highest of high praise for our great man's great great performance as the Dude.
As you will read below, this reviewer is not totally taken by "Rio Bravo," but is totally taken by our Dino further sayin' "Martin makes the film far the best performance as a man trying to get out of their alcohol dependency which he fell after being betrayed by a woman." However, we are also saddened to note that "misterfisk" is obviously not a fan of our Dino's croonin'.....but likes as we said yesterday, everybody is entitled to their opinion....even what we can't possibly 'gree with 'em.
We sez our thanks to "misterfisk" for sharin' his awesome appreciato of our Dino's potently powerful portrayal of the Dude in "Rio Bravo," and hopes it will bring many more Swedes into the Dino-fold! And, we hope he will make a way to spend more time listenin' to more Dino-croonin' and we are most certain that he will grow deeper and deeper delighted with our mavelously multi-talented King of Cool. Sheriff has only a few helpers in the fight against a powerful man trying to free his imprisoned brother.
"Without a strong state must be all their own sheriff."
In the old wild west where the state is so weak that every man and woman had to be strong so that no one else stepped on them.
Rio Bravo is a very safe west movie that offers exactly what 1959 felt that the audience wanted. No risk anything and all the characters on the good side make it to the end without getting hit by a single bullet, while the amounts of the evil cowboys shot dead.
Once the audience got to see John Wayne playing the stern but good hero surrounded by the standard figures that the faithful and gifted sidekick, the tvålfagre young man, the beautiful young woman and the jolly old man, as usual, in the guise of Walter Brennan.
Rio Bravo is such a perfect film in its genre that it could have been written by a committee with a mandate to cover all of western clichés and audiences conceivably could.
For the youngest girls are eighteen year old teen idol Ricky Nelson, for a little more mature women love story between John Wayne and Angie Dickinson, for the children of the comic characters played by Walter Brennan and Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, for the men Dean Martin struggling with alcoholism and broken heart.
Along with a dramatic clash between good and evil that gives rise to violent action scenes and some musical entertainment offers Rio Bravo entertainment for the whole family - mother, father, a teenage son and daughter and / or a younger son and daughter. At this time, Hollywood is often very adapted to target groups in a simple way, certainly an approach calculated by consultants. "How can we cover this demographic?"
In addition to the story consists of routinely trumped cliches, I'm not entirely fond of the ensemble. John Wayne and Walter Brennan has always tråkat me and Ricky Nelson is quite bland. Angie Dickinson's worse than that because her acting sometimes is purely embarrassing.
Dean Martin, however, is a big surprise. As a singer, he has interested me about as much as Britney Spears, ie considerably less than zero, and I did absolutely nothing. But contrary to the expectations Martin makes the film far the best performance as a man trying to get out of their alcohol dependency which he fell after being betrayed by a woman.
Dean Martin's role is to me the only reason to see Rio Bravo, although in and of itself fell out a few chairs for him either. If I speculated I would say that Martin might have had problems with alcohol and why and to get respect as an actor straining more than the others.
John Wayne film seems to just be another western, and his so-called love affair with Angie Dickinson is stone dead, he is not the least engaged. Dickinson and Ricky Nelson is harmless and Walter Brennan reprises his usual "old man".
Despite all this belongs to the Rio Bravo company of the most famous westerns of the twentieth century.
"Rio Bravo" is the name of both the movie and the little den where the action takes place, a typical dusty western town with a tough sheriff in the form of John T. Chance (John Wayne). Chance cages in odågan Joe Burdette (Claude Akins), who constantly causes problems, and conflicts with wealthy Nathan Burdette (John Russell), a ranchare who always stands up for his brother.
During the arrest Chance gets unexpected help of the alcoholic "Dude" (Dean Martin) brought up from their humiliation of the event. Dude has previously served as deputy sheriff before he began drinking.
Now Joe Burdette must be kept in custody for six days until the Texas authorities can bring him to justice. And this time is dangerous because Nathan and his men plan to use force to get Joe.
Chance has the odds against him - at his side is just an alcoholic and a lame man, Stumpy (Walter Brennan). But then joins kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), a young guy who is as fair as he is skilled with all guns. Comfort and relaxation will find the sheriff of Feathers (Angie Dickinson), a woman who recently lost her husband fake gambling and really just passing through but stops when she finds The One.
Propagandistic films often use anonymising the names of the characters. Just one example of many I could mention: I Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum (Katharina Blum's lost honor, 1975) recorded by Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta in the radical leftist wave in the seventies called a newspaper Zeitung ( "Journal"), and its ruthless journalist Tötges (töten = "dead") attacks the protagonist, Miss Blum (Blume = "flower").
In Rio Bravo is the same with people who have appealing names, if that's even your own name, like Chance, Stumpy, Colorado, Dude, Feathers. Here are the names may be signs of typisering, which actually is an unspoken goal in propaganda films. The individuality remains in the background are not explicitly because of a pronounced propaganda but because of the commercial recipe, so that the characters in the Rio Bravo becomes "ideal types". But especially American westerns reflected in its heyday of Soviet films propagandistic content.
Rio Bravo has become something of a classic, and perhaps it is precisely thanks to the standardized content. But for me it is rather a sign of a Hollywod who started getting stuck in a rut and allow the wheels to spin ever more futile in place before it collapses completely during the early sixties in Hollywood's decline.

I den gamla vilda västern var staten så svag att varje man och kvinna var tvungen att vara stark så att inte någon annan trampade på dem.
Rio Bravo är en väldigt trygg västernfilm som erbjuder precis vad man 1959 ansåg att publiken ville ha. Ingen riskerar någonting och alla rollfigurer på den goda sidan klarar sig till slutet utan att bli träffade av en enda kula, medan mängder av onda cowboys skjuts ihjäl.
Ännu en gång fick biopubliken se John Wayne spela den hårde men gode hjälten omgiven av standardfigurer som den trogne och skicklige vapendragaren, den tvålfagre unge mannen, den vackra unga kvinnan och den lustige gamle gubben som vanligt i skepnad av Walter Brennan.
Rio Bravo är en så perfekt film i sin genre av att den skulle ha kunnat skrivas av en kommitté med uppdrag att täcka in alla westernklichéer och målgrupper som tänkas kunde.
För de yngsta tjejerna finns artonårige tonårsidolen Ricky Nelson, för lite mognare kvinnor kärlekshistorien mellan John Wayne och Angie Dickinson, för barnen de komiska figurerna spelade av Walter Brennan och Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, för männen Dean Martin som kämpar med alkoholism och brustet hjärta.
Tillsammans med en dramatisk konflikt mellan goda och onda som ger upphov till häftiga actionscener och lite musikalisk underhållning erbjuder Rio Bravo underhållning för hela familjen – mamma, pappa, en tonårig son och dotter och/eller en lite yngre son och dotter. Vid den här tiden var Hollywood ofta väldigt målgruppsanpassad på ett simpelt sätt, säkert ett tillvägagångssätt uträknat av konsulter. ”How can we cover this demographic?”
Förutom att berättelsen består av rutinmässigt hopkokade klichéer är jag inte helt förtjust i ensemblen. John Wayne och Walter Brennan har alltid tråkat ut mig och Ricky Nelson är helt intetsägande. Angie Dickinson är värre än så eftersom hennes skådespeleri stundtals är rent pinsamt.
Dean Martin är emellertid en stor överraskning. Som sångare har han intresserat mig ungefär lika mycket som Britney Spears, det vill säga betydligt mindre än noll, och jag väntade mig absolut ingenting. Men tvärtemot förväntningarna gör Martin filmens överlägset bästa rollprestation som en man som försöker komma ur sitt alkoholberoende som han hamnade i efter att ha svikits av en kvinna.
Dean Martins roll är för mig den enda orsaken att se Rio Bravo, även om jag i och för sig inte föll ur några stolar för honom heller. Om jag spekulerade skulle jag säga att Martin kanske själv haft problem med alkoholen och därför och för att få respekt som skådespelare ansträngde sig mer än de andra.
För John Wayne verkar filmen bara vara ännu en western och hans så kallade kärlekshistoria med Angie Dickinson är stendöd, han är inte det minsta engagerad. Dickinson och Ricky Nelson är menlösa och Walter Brennan repriserar sin vanliga ”gubbe”.
Trots allt detta tillhör Rio Bravo skaran av de mest kända västernfilmerna från nittonhundratalet.
”Rio Bravo” är namnet både på filmen och den lilla håla där handlingen utspelas, en typisk dammig västernstad med en tuff sheriff i form av John T Chance (John Wayne). Chance burar in odågan Joe Burdette (Claude Akins), som ständigt ställer till med problem, och kommer i konflikt med förmögne Nathan Burdette (John Russell), en ranchare som alltid ställer upp för sin bror.
Under gripandet får Chance oväntat hjälp av alkoholisten ”Dude” (Dean Martin) som väcks upp ur sin förnedring av händelsen. Dude har tidigare varit vicesheriff innan han började supa.
Nu måste Joe Burdette behållas i häktet i sex dagar tills myndigheterna i Texas kan ställa honom inför rätta. Och denna tid är livsfarlig eftersom Nathan och hans män planerar att använda våld för att få ut Joe.
Chance har oddsen emot sig – vid hans sida står bara en alkoholist och en halt gubbe, Stumpy (Walter Brennan). Men så ansluter sig unge Colorado (Ricky Nelson), en ung kille som är lika fager som han är skicklig med puffrorna. Tröst och avkoppling finner sheriffen hos Feathers (Angie Dickinson), en kvinna som nyligen förlorat sin falskspelande make och som egentligen bara är på genomresa men stannar när hon finner Den Stora Kärleken.
Propagandistiska filmer använder ofta anonymiserande namn på rollfigurerna. Bara ett exempel av många jag skulle kunna ta upp: I Die Verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum (Katharina Blums förlorade heder, 1975) inspelad av Volker Schlöndorff och Margarethe von Trotta under den radikala vänstervågen på sjuttiotalet heter en tidning Zeitung (”tidning”), och dess samvetslöse journalist Tötges (töten = ”döda”) attackerar huvudpersonen fröken Blum (blume = ”blomma”).
I Rio Bravo är det likadant, med personer som har talande namn, om det ens är egennamn, som Chance, Stumpy, Colorado, Dude, Feathers. Här är namnen kanske tecken på typisering, vilket ju faktiskt är ett outtalat mål i propagandafilmer. Individualiteten hamnar i skymundan inte explicit på grund av ett uttalat propagandasyfte utan på grund av det kommersiella receptet, så att rollfigurerna i Rio Bravo blir ”idealtyper”. Men särskilt amerikanska västernfilmer speglade under sin glansperiod sovjetiska filmer med propagandistiskt innehåll.
Rio Bravo har blivit något av en klassiker, och kanske är det just tack vare det standardiserade innehållet. Men för mig är den snarare ett tecken på ett Hollywod som börjat fastna i gamla hjulspår och låter hjulen spinna allt mer fåfängt på stället innan det bryter samman helt under början av sextiotalet i Hollywoods nedgångsperiod.
