'The Rat Pack' in Las Vegas, Nevada 1960's

The Rat Pack was a group of actors originally centered on their leader, Humphrey Bogart. In the mid-1960s it was the name used by the press and the general public to refer to a later variation of the group, after Bogart's death, that called itself "the Summit" or "the Clan," featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop; they appeared together on stage and in films in the early 1960s, including the movies Ocean's 11, Sergeants 3, and Robin and the 7 Hoods (in the last film, Bing Crosby replaced Lawford). Sinatra, Martin, and Davis were regarded as the group's lead members.

Remembering Dean Martin on his birthday!

Hey pallies, likes today's Dino-gram in honor of our most beloved Dino on his day of birth....what we most fondly tagged "The Day That Coolness Came To Earth" is probably the most unique and diverse way of honorin' our most beloved Dino that we have uncovered this year.  From the self-tagged blog, "RICK GOLDSCHMIDT" comes his Dino-remembrance tagged "Remembering Dean Martin on his birthday!"

It's truly the most interestin' trio of pixs!  The first are a couple of autographed images of our Dino with one scribed "To Rick Always Dean Martin" makin' us wonder if indeed this pix was personally signed by our Dino for blog master Rick.

The second set of poses of our Dino closely cuddlin' with one beau-ti-ful chick while that famous Dino-glance at 'nother lovely....as seen on the al-b-um cover of "Winter Romance."  And, likes the third is a pix of the coolest of cool Dino-toys....The Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis TV Puppet Show.
It features puppets of our Dino and Jerry, a 45 rpm record, some directions, a pix of Dino and Jerry, what looks like a curtain for a puppet theatre....and more.

Remembering Dean Martin on his birthday!

Thursday, June 11, 2015

I just thought Dean Martin was awfully cool, and I wanted to be like him.

Hey pallies, likes we gotta 'fess up that likes, likes we are perfectly, powerfully pumped to be able to share today's edition of Dino-devotion with all youse sold-out-to-Dino Dinophiles!  While today's prose does not officially qualify as a celebration of our Dino's birthday....."The Day That Coolness Came To Earth" 'cause there is no mention of June 7, 1917, it is truly truly one of the most Dino-honorin' posts that we have ever been able to present your Dino-way...and faithful readers knows that we have shared huge huge quanities of the huges homages to our most beloved Dino.  We just couldn't wait any longer to share this pure passion for our Dino, so while we still have more Dino-birthday celebratin' to do, we will continue with that on the morrow.

Today's perfect post of awesome adulation of our King of Cool come from Mr. Jason Weisberger, the publisher of blog pad  "Boing Boing," tagged  "the award-winning zine, blog and directory of wonderful things.  Indeed that is the amazin' absolute truth when it comes to Mr. Wesiberger's superb scribin's "I drive a car with license plates that read “DRUNK.” Weird things happen as a result."

You guessed it pallies, Jason is deeply devoted to our Dino and his deepest desire to is emulate our great great man.  In his well written words below, we learn that when Weisberger couldn't get his personal plates for his license to be tagged "DRUNKY" after our Dino, he settled for "DRUNK"  His poetry-like prose is an excellent essay of some of revealin' responses he has gotten to those plates in the almost 20 years since he acquired 'em shortly after our Dino's death.

We here at ilovedinomartin revel in his powerfully profound declaration of awesome appreciation that he uses to close out his swank scribin's ...." I just thought Dean Martin was awfully cool, and I wanted to be like him."  Likes ain't that the truth for all the rest of us Dino-holics as well pallies?!?!?!?!

We solemnly salute Mr. Jason Weisberger of "Boing Boing" and we so so look forward to more essays on those "DRUNK" vanity plates that he promises to share in the future.  To checks this out in it's original source, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.  Dino-always, ever, and only, DMP

I drive a car with license plates that read “DRUNK.” Weird things happen as a result.

Boing Boing's publisher has a set of vanity plates that provoke interesting responses from adults and kids alike.

BY JASON WEISBERGER

“Do the police write you a lot of tickets?” asks the crossing guard at my daughter’s school. I’m waiting in a long line of cars to pick up my second-grader when she gets out of school. “No,” I reply, “I’ve only received two moving violations in about 20 years with these plates.”

This same interaction happens to me so often that I wouldn’t even have remembered this particular time, were it not for a young girl, maybe 8 or 9, who was aggressively giving me the evil eye as I pulled my car forward, to let my daughter in. My kid opens the car door. I hear the little girl tell her friend, “That man has a bad word on his car. My mother says he is a bad man.”

Personalized plates are a form of expression in California. Mine say “DRUNK.”

I don’t think drunk is a particularly bad word. Me, a bad man? I’ll let you make up your own mind.

Most of the country considers California and its vanity plates crazy already. The US has vanity plates all over, but California has a special car culture. I’ve always felt there was a certain art form to the way Californians express themselves through the highly restrictive communications medium of license plates. Growing up in Santa Monica, I’d certainly seen a ton of cute and creative ones. I remember seeing “CRE8IVE” around, and it’s still a favorite, along with "6UL DV8."

Famed actor Dean Martin had the ultimate vanity plate. Dino's vanity plate read "DRUNKY." This is among the many reasons he remains a hero of mine to this day. The Hollywood star passed away on Christmas Day, in 1995. In early 1996 I was at the DMV registering my terrible 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 XL convertible, and the hardworking person behind the counter asked me if I wanted a personalized plate.

 bhdeandrunky

I guess they were trying to upsell us, back then, as today's DMV won’t do a thing you haven’t already filled out the correct form for. Back in 1996, when this smiling woman asked me that question, I tried to think of something brilliant. Something like Dean would have done! What did I ask for? I asked for DRUNKY, because I wasn’t very creative. Predictably, they told me they cannot reissue a plate. Then, in a moment that changed my life, she spun her orange and black, WYSE terminal-ish screen and shared a list of similar but available words.

Near the top of the list was “DRUNK.”

“I’ll take that,” I said.

A few weeks later I got a note from the DMV asking for additional information describing what the word meant personally to me. I wrote back that it was the past participle of DRANK. I am not sure I was correct, I’ve never bothered to check. A few weeks after that, I got a note in the mail telling me to come pick up my plates at the window.

I’ve had those plates on nearly every car I’ve owned since. The Galaxie, a Corolla, an Infiniti, a 1987 Volkswagen Westfalia, a Taco, a Hybrid Highlander (one of the very first) and now a lovely blue Porsche 911 S Cab. I’ve driven as far east as Chicago, as far North as Canada and South into Baja. These plates have roamed around national parks, wandered through the Hopi and Navajo reservations, and zipped back and forth between NorCal and SoCal so many times I could drive it in my sleep. Not that I do.

I’ve spoken to people who think those plates, and me by extension, are hilarious. I've had to convince a few worried individuals that they are not government-required disclosures (as there may be in other states.) I have met people who lost family members in drunk driving incidents. Generally these people find the plates offensive. I’ve received rounds of applause, been shown various body parts at high speeds on the freeway. I have heard a lot of name-calling.

The police have better things to do than harass a guy over his plates, but I have a few of those stories too.

The stories are why I keep the plates. I had no idea what adventures, odd experiences, and wonderful opportunities they would add to my life when I asked the DMV person for them at the counter that day nearly twenty years ago. I just thought Dean Martin was awfully cool, and I wanted to be like him.

Watch Boing Boing for those stories. They’ll be coming.

It's a fine blog that we here at ilovedinomartin have visited a number of times 'cause the pad's main man, Mr. David Lobosco's main man is none other then our Dino and he has created a number of potent posts in the huge homage of our Dino!  David is a deep devotee of our Dino as he proudly proclaims in the prologue of today's Dino-post, "There is not a day that goes by that I don't listen to something by Dino."

Likes in our humble Dino-opinion, we truly believes that his birthday homage of our Dino simply tagged "A Dean Martin Memory" is Lobosco's bestest of best Dino-post ever!  As you will read,
David shares one of the most tender of tender, the most heart-warmin' of heart-warmin' true life Dino-encounters we have ever been privileged to hear.  Indeed the Dino-tale that Lobosco found all the web and shares with us is one that we have never ever heard before...makin' it even more special.

A DEAN MARTIN MEMORY

Today would have been Dean Martin's 98th birthday. There is not a day that goes by that I don't listen to something by Dino. I love the personal stories about Dean that is all around the internet. Here is one story I found that I thought was especially good...
I remember my family going to see Dean Martin sing at the Riveria Hotel in Las Vegas back in the 1960's. I had just turned 15, and my older brother, mom and day had taken a family vacation, driving to see Las Vegas from our house in Houston, Texas. We were lucky to get tickets (they didn't check my age) and were seated in about the middle of the place. I remember being in awe of Dean. He was so relaxed and had a voice that was the best I ever heard. The one thing I remember most of all, was that I laughed hard because Dean was so funny with jokes and one-liners. He even bantered back and forth with the audience, which endeared him closer to everyone.

The following morning we were all eating lunch in the restaurant at the hotel, when I looked beyond where my father was seated across from me, and Dean Martin had walked in through the door. He wasn't being seated, and looked uncomfortable waiting there with another man. I didn't even tell my parents or brother, and quickly bolted up from my seat to go greet him.

He was most gracious, asking how I liked the show, after I told him I saw it. Then I told him that my family drove all the way from Texas to have a vacation, but almost didn't make it because my Dad had just lost his job the day before- but decided to take us all anyway.

Dean asked where we were sitting, and immediately walked over to greet my family, who were flabbergasted, to say the least. After a short minute, a host from the restaurant came over and handed Mr. Martin a bag , which he said were a couple of muffin's to go. As he graciously said goodbye to my family, he asked me to follow him to the front table, which I did right away. He told the person behind the counter that the meal we were having was to be put on his tab, and then he turned to me, reached in his pocket and handed me a (what I thought was, at the time) coin.
I returned to my seat with a smile as big as the state where I came from... and no one could believe that Dean Martin himself came over and spoke to us, and even paid for our lunch!

I had forgotten all about that coin Mr. Martin gave to me, because I was so excited and I just dropped it into my shirt pocket. Later that evening, when my family was in our hotel room, packing to go home, the coin dropped out, and I picked it up. I remember shouting to my Mom that Mr. Martin also gave me a coin to keep. When I handed it to her, she froze without blinking. A few seconds later she exclaimed, "Paul! Do you know what this is?!?". Dean had given me a $1000.00 gambling token from the tables! What a blessing in disguise, since my father had lost his job, and we were going to be struggling to make ends meet for quite some time.

Now that I have grown up, and am pretty successful in my own business, I often remember the excitement, but mainly kindness, that Dean Martin has shed on me and my family in a time of need. I have chosen to follow in that incident that affected me, and two or three times a year I do the same when I see a loving family who could use the "extra" boost to help them in this world. It's a real good feeling, and one that always keeps me in line with "reality" in this very selfish world.

I am sending you my name, but I wish that you not print it. I don't want the "fame", I just wanted to relate my story. Thank you for the opportunity, and a special thanks to Dean Martin up there looking down on all of us.

So, we have been focusin' on our bestest of best way to show our passion for Dino on the day before "The Day That Coolness Came To Earth."  We had a few ideas, but recently we have felt deeply drawn to stop over at our Dino's youngest boypallie Ricci's home pad to checks out the action, and likes when we did that a couple of days ago and happened to peruse a number of his pages, we were led to look at his  BIO PAGE full of great details 'bout his cool career.

Well, likes we were beatifully blown away when we came to the section of his bio that spoke of "Ricci's  fascination with the new music video format and he began to produce and direct music videos. One of Ricci’s music videos was very special as he directed his Father Dean’s only music video Since I Met You Baby."  Indeed, we thinks that Ricci's crownin' effort for his Dino daddy-o was his creation of this magnificant mix of images and music.

And there we were stunned, yes Dino-holics, stunned to see a vid of "Since I Met You, Baby" posted to that page....and as we viewed it, we realized that it was a pristine copy of it and most beautiful to behold.  Likes we have always always been grateful that at least one copy of the vid has been posted to youtube for a number of years, but the vid on Ricci's page is more glorious than any we have beheld before!  The colorin' is magnificant and the images crystal clear!

At that moment, we knew that we this is definitely what we are called to share in homage of our Dino in remembrance of his day of birth.  Likes we couldn't get to copy the vid, so below you will find the one on youtube....but RUSH ON OVER TO RICCI'S HOME PAD and watch his coolest of cool copy!  You can click on the "BIO PAGE" link above or the tag of this here Dino-gram to goes there.

Also, in researchin' back in the ol' archives here at ilovedinomartin we came 'cross some powerful prose from Mr. Jayme Wing or was the editor who created our Dino's vid of "Since I Met You, Baby."  These words were included in a comment that Mr. Wing made on one of the copies of the music vid shared at youtube.  Those wise words are shared below for all our Dino-edification.  Cool to know how much Wing digged the op to serve our most beloved Dino in this way!

So, likes on this day before "The Day That Coolness Came To Earth," enjoys film editor Mr. James Wing's remarkable reflections and goes off to Ricci Martin's bio page to endulge in the bestest of best copies of this coolest of cool vid.  Likes We can watch it over and over and never tire of viewin' and listenin' to our King of Cool croons this swankest of swank swingin' croon!   Deeply devoted to Dino, DMP

My name is Jayme Wing and I am the editor who created this video. I did all the offline and on line editing and all the matte effects and design. It contains my trademark red dot. This video was done in the mid 1980's. All of the effects you see in this video were done using an analog video switcher while playing back multiple 1" video tape machines. We did not have any software based effects. This video was shot on video tape instead of 16 or 35mm film.

Some of the effects you see in the video were created to mask camera exposure problems and other issues. It took about a month to make this video. Man, I had a great time making this video. Thanks Dino!

"......lets not forget about his party boy antics, drinking and womanizing that, for better or worse, contributed to his unequalled aura.

Hey pallies, likes on this fourth day of our month long celebration of "The Day That Coolness Came To Earth" we are deeply delighted to share a post that we oughta have shared 'bout six months 'go 'cause it was scribed in respectful remembrance of  Dino-winter-day....the day that our Dino departed our presence on December 25, 1995.  But, likes as too too often happens, google Dino-blog searchin' didn't turn this beautiful blog post up 'til most recently and we didn't wanna wait 'nother half year to shares it.

So today we takes you to the Mr. Robert Horvat's blog "If It Happened Yesterday, It's History" where Horvat shared his most Dino-honorin' post, "Remembering Dean Martin on Christmas Day." Mr.  Horvat's Dino-devotion is not totally new as we shared his earlier Dino-devotion tagged "Are you too cool for Martin and Lewis ? Not Me !"HERE.  That indeed was a very very tender-hearted piece of Dino-prose and his second offerin' that we are sharin' today is as well.

Robert shares a fine mix of pix and prose retellin' the story of our Dino's life and times  It's crystal clear that Horvat is very knowledgeable 'bout the Dino-story, but his passionate prose comes more from his heart then his head, as you can tell that this young man is totally totally smitten with our most beloved Dino, and as you can tell from what we chose to tag this Dino-gram we simply digs this remarkable reflective Dino-comment from Robert...." "......lets not forget about his party boy antics, drinking and womanizing that, for better or worse, contributed to his unequalled aura."

Remembering Dean Martin on Christmas Day.

sands2
With today being the anniversary of his death, let us remember one of the greatest artists of show business, the “king of cool”, Dean Martin. He came from humble beginnings out of the small city of Steubenville, in Ohio, to become one of the most important showbiz stars and figures of the twentieth century. He was truly an unflappable man, even when everybody thought he would fizzle after his split with Jerry Lewis, to confound critics and rise out of the fall out with Lewis, to wow audiences in Vegas and across the country; and begin what would become a successful solo film and television career. When people generally talk about Dean Martin, most people recall his amazing singing voice, charm and mystique. Many of his closest friends and fans alike have also commented about how wonderful his sense of humour was, including that infectious and irresistible smile. Though it is fair to say, lets not forget about his party boy antics, drinking and womanizing that, for better or worse, contributed to his unequalled aura.
Born in Steubenville, Ohio, on June 7th, 1917, Dean Martin (Dino Paul Crocetti), grew up in a close-knit Italian community that acted like a big extended family. Being the son of Italian immigrants, Italian was also the only language he spoke until he was about five. Though once he stated school, he soon realised that he had to master a new one- English. This author can definitely relate to the challenge of learning English as a second language, as Martin did in his youth. Like Martin, I developed a slow and easily style of speaking, but unlike Martin, it didn’t remain with me the rest of my life.
The hardship of finding his place in school and learning English would subside and as he matured in his teens, he soon realised he had an amazing natural talent for singing. This new passion gave him inspiration to pursue a career in singing at the age of seventeen, in Ohio nightclubs. (Anything it seemed was better, he thought, than being a milkman or a gas station attendant). Soon enough, people began to pay attention to him as he successfully engaged with his audiences. His natural charm on stage also put people at ease and his sense of humour helped too. Though, the salary as a nightclub singer wasn’t enough to keep him financially content. Martin would have to dabble in a host of illegal activities to supplement is income by running errands, dealing cards and bootlegging.
His big break would eventually come in 1939, when he would be offered a full-time job as the lead singer in Sammy Walkin’s orchestral band. Changing his name in 1940 from Dino Paul Crocetti to Dean Martin was also all part of the fairy tale that had begun to unfold. By the early 1940’s, Martin had signed an exclusive deal with a record label; and was  singing the romantic songs we would all association with Dean Martin.
Though, it would be in the early part of 1945 that his world would be turned on its head, when he would be introduced to a zany, young, skinny kid named Jerry Lewis in midtown Manhattan, New York City. The two would hit it off instantly, but it wouldn’t be until the two met up at the same nightclub engagement in 1946 that further sparks would fly. They began fooling around together in their respective acts, which in the end developed into the riotous slapstick gags and routines, we would become so familiar with during the course of their ten-year partnership. During the period between 1946 and 1956, they were the biggest stars in showbiz history. They would also go onto make sixteen films together with Martin playing the smooth romantic lead with the singing voice of an angel and Lewis the clownish, ever energetic live wire.

Dean Martin played the straight man to Jerry Lewis goofball persona in all of their films together. Here is a scene from At War With The Army 1950
No one imagined that it would all end one day as badly as it did for Martin and Lewis, expect maybe Dean Martin ? He had become disillusioned by the rise and success Jerry was receiving and Dean thought it was best for his own sanity and career, that he move on and venture out on his own. As soon as the dust had settled on the fallout that was Martin and Lewis, everyone expected Martin to stall and fail miserably. He surprised everyone including his greatest skeptics and returned to what he loved best. On March 6th, 1957, Dean Martin opened at the Sands Hotel Copa Room in Las Vegas (see header image) and wowed the audience with his new routine and persona. He played a loveable exuberant playboy singer with a cigarette and glass in almost always in hand. To many, his act was indistinguishable from the real Dean Martin, yet Martin always claimed his act was based on a drunk he played in the film The Stooge with Jerry Lewis. Nevertheless, his success in Vegas would lead to him playing variations of this act for the next thirty years.
But beneath the cool exterior that was Dean Martin, he was anxious and miserable. His personal affairs were all over the place as he initially struggled with life after Lewis. He so needed a ‘hit’ movie to relaunch his acting career. But more than anything he also wanted to be taken seriously as an actor. In Deana Martin’s book Memories are made of this (2004),she says that, “Dad said later that the two greatest turning points of his career were meeting Jerry Lewis and leaving Jerry Lewis.” She would also surmise that he later said that he became a real actor because of those two things. With a little bit of luck, he did as he found critical success in the film The Young Lions with Marlon Brando in 1958. (He would, of course, go onto make some thirty films without jerry Lewis. Some of my favourite Dean Martin movies are Rio Bravo (1959), Oceans 11 (1960 ) and Who was that Lady (1960), in which he would receive a Golden Globe nomination for best comedy actor.) It was also around this time that he became associated with the legendary group known as the Rat Pack. The group included some of Martin’s personal friends, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford. His association with this group forever cemented his reputation as one of the ‘coolest’ guy in showbiz, if not the world.

Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra sit around in this scene from Oceans 11 (1960). They were known together as The Rat Pack.
As a solo act he would also enjoy immense success over the years, appearing for example on his own television series the Dean Martin Show; and he always managed to churn out a new album and hit single every now and then. Some of my favourites songs and they might be yours too, are That’s Amore, Memories Are Made of This, Your Nobody Til Somebody Loves You, Volare and Return To Me.
I would like to conclude by returning now back to the beginning of this article, where I first mention that today, Christmas Day, is the anniversary of his death. Dean Martin on this day in 1995, died quietly of acute respiratory failure from complications of being diagnosed with cancer in his Beverley Hills home in the early hours of the morning. Even though it has now almost been twenty years since his death and regardless of the fact that his impact was felt more in a bygone era, his legacy still lives on today, very much so every time we turn on a radio station or sit down to watch a Martin and Lewis movie. His songs have often also featured as soundtracks to films like Moonstruck and more importantly to our lives. Finally, it is only fitting that we are reminded that apart from his stage and on screen legend and singing ability, he was also an enthusiastic golfer, a humble humanitarian, a co founder of the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon and an activist against racial intolerance.
The quote by Deana Martin is from the book by Deana Martin with Wendy Holden, Memories Are Made of This: Dean Martin Through His Daughter’s Eyes, Sidwick & Jackson, 2004, p.58.

I make use of both images under the rational of fair use to hightlight two examples of the body of work Dean Martin took part in. It also enables me to makes an important contribution to the readers understanding of the article, which could not practically be communicated by words alone.

There I celebrated what I find to be Dino's most interesting period, a strange world of almost intentionally lacklustre recordings, a melange of stale Tin Pan Alley standards, big band, country and sixties bubblegum pop that, in the late 1970s, sounded particularly incongruous.

Hey pallies, likes as we were typin' Dino-patter for our initial Dino-gram on this very very special month of celebratin' "The Day That Coolness Came To Earth," we were wonderin' how coulda we tops a post internationale in nature and hugely homagin' of our Dino likes yesterday's sharin' of Montesilvano's Councillor Carlandrea Falcone  proposin' they tag their new convention center after our Dino.  What coulda compare to our most beloved Dino's mother earth....Montesilvano....birth site of our Dino's daddy-o ponderin' the passionate possibility  of honorin' our Dino in this wondrous way?!?!?!?!

Well, likes we needn't worried, 'cause as soon as we finished that powerful post, as we began our usual google Dino-blog search, we were likes almost immediately directed to more international Dino-devotion, if possible even more hugely homagin' of our main man.  We were delightfully directed to the blog of one of our newest pallies-in-Dino, Mr. Joshua Meggitt's swank site, "...As Though The Shame Would Outlive Him - music and listening."

Faithful readers of ilovedinomartin knows that Josh is that awesome Aussie deeply diggin' Dino dude who in April did that most spectacularly  special of special radio programmes on the life, times, and teachin's of our Dino in his latter years on radio 3RRR FM's Max Headroom.  You can locate our original post of deep Dino-appreciato  HERE.  And, likes we had been hopin' to find an appropriate way to be able to 'gin  accent this fantasticly fabulous programme for all who may have missed the original post.

So, likes today we are totall totally thrilled to be able to share Mr. Meggitt's superb scribin' "Dean Martin - The Later Years, on Max Headroom."  Upon postin' our original prose on his poweful programme, Josh left us such nice appreciato and we replied by sayin'....."Might you consider takin' your notes from this programme and creatin' some Dino-prose for us as we finds it spot on in deep, pure, and true devotion to our Dino...you are one of few who truly "gets Martin" in our Dino-book."

And, likes that pallies is exactly what Josh has done with his most Dino-honorin' post...so we finally have in print much of Meggitt's spoken Dino-reflections from the radio show....'long with that coolest of cool gif from "The Cannonball Run II" where our Dino takes a nip right from the bottle....and some great youtube clips of some of Dino-croons shared on the radio programme.  Likes this is 100 % proof purely potent prose pallies!!!!!!

In addition Mr. Meggitt is so so kind to include thanks to ilovedinomartin for doin' our  small part in spreadin' the news of his immense 'n intense Dino-efforts...includin' a couple of links and portions of our praise for his astoundin' 'n awesome work in the cause of Dino.  All in all, it one of the most important Dino-postin's that we have ever been privileged to share here at ilovedinomartin.

And, likes we  are absolutely awed that Meggitt has been sharin' his deepest of deep devotion to our Dino with his prodigy!  Josh sez, "The main appeal with Dean Martin was his carelessness, a quality I've even managed to get my four year old to appreciate."  That's where it's at pallies.....one generation leadin' the next into deep, pure, and true devotion to our one and only Dino!

On this second day of our month of rememberin' "The Day That Coolness Came To Earth" we salute Mr. Joshua Meggitt for his extraordinary efforts in the spreadin' the Dino-message far and wide.  And, once 'gain here is the LINK to Meggitt's remarkable radio programme.  To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-gram.  Dino-always, ever, and only, DMP

Dean Martin - The Later Years, on Max Headroom

More belated and perfunctory posting. I recently presented a special on the later years of Dean Martin for 3RRR FM's Max Headroom, which can be streamed here . There I celebrated what I find to be Dino's most interesting period, a strange world of almost intentionally lacklustre recordings, a melange of stale Tin Pan Alley standards, big band, country and sixties bubblegum pop that, in the late 1970s, sounded particularly incongruous. Ironically such product could also only come from the 1970s.

Here is the blurb for the show:
Over his long and varied career, Dean Martin, "The King of Cool", was a heart throb, crooner, film star and leading member of the rat pack.

He was also known as "The Laziest Man In Showbiz", churning out countless albums of stale standards and hosting formulaic, TV specials for over 40 years.

On Max Headroom this week, Joshua Meggitt explores this lacklustre Dino, playing choice filler from his later albums, with excerpts from such cinematic highlights as The Cannonball Run 2
By focusing on the later years, I intentionally avoided his younger, more well known material, the stuff of nostalgia shows and Scorsese films, and went straight to the end: his lazy, resolutely uncool, critically condemned, and now long forgotten (if ever paid attention to) final years. It's a world of strange, almost studied mediocrity, so mindlessly middle-of-the-road that hearing it now, its quite unlike all other music. Exemplary is "Old Bones", the opening song from his final album, 1983's The Nashville Sessions:

Today, Dean Martin is largely remembered as a lazy, lackadasical Frank Sinatra, a Las Vegas self-parody, his reputation resting on a few comedies he made with Jerry Lewis, and some charming pieces of pop fluff that once topped the Hit Parade with retro “lounge” revivals and appearances in mafia films. Even by the later years of his own career, his early days as a global, charismatic romantic icon are long forgotten… and yet I can’t look away! This song is so stupid, but I love it: "Love Thy Neighbour" from 1978's penultimate Once in a While:

The main appeal with Dean Martin was his carelessness, a quality I've even managed to get my four year old to appreciate. He was, as biographer Nick Tosches dubbed him, the ultimate menefreghista - one who just doesn't give a fuck.Or, going further, what contrarian commentator and Oxbow singer Eugene Robinson describes as outright violent misanthropy.
Dean Martin’s vocals say one thing to my ears: FUCK YOU!

The more I listen, the more I agree. Hostility and scorn for both his material and his audience is clearly expressed in his reading of "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'", from the wonderfully titled, My Woman My Woman My Wife of 1970. Essentially a ballad about the pain of breaking up, listen to Dean laugh as he delivers the line, "I cry myself to sleep each night", as though the very concept of him feeling heartbreak is absurd:

The ilovedinomartin Dean Martin fansite blog got wind of the program and promoted it heavily. Check out their kind words here but here's an excerpt:

Hey pallies likes are we in for the hugest of huge Dino-treats as today, as promised we share our newest pallie, down under dude Mr. Joshua Meggitt's  coolest of cool "celebration" of our Dino....an hour long radio programme that is a marvelous  mix of  '70's and '80's Dino-croons and choice audio recordin's from our Dino's later work on both the small and big screens...

We gotta 'fess up that we  grooved on each and ever moment of this purely potent programme of passionate appreciato for our King of Cool.  We particularly loved listenin' to a number of croons from our Dino's last al-b-um, "The Nashville Sessions."  And, we couldn't 'gree more with Josh that these particular croons really are remarkably revelatory of our Dino's life and times at that point...truly these croons form a stellar set of Dino-teachin's!!!!!

We coulda goes on and on, 'bout the wonderful mixin' of Mr. Meggitt's Dino-reflections with our Dino's singin', but likes we wants  youse all to enjoy this amazin' programme lovin'ly presented by in-the-know Dino-holic Mr. Joshua Meggitt.

We salute Josh for this tremendous tribute to our main man and for encouragin' his audience to develop a deeper understandin' and relationship with of our Dino by readin' Nick Tosche's Dino-bio, "DINO: Living High In The Dirty Business Of Dream.  And thanks ever so much to pallie Josh for even givin' a nice shout out to our humble little Dino-blog, ilovedinomartin. for doin' our part to promote his Dino-special.

I suspect there'll be more Dean Martin posts...

"Let's call the convention center in Dean Martin "

Image result for dean martin Montesilvano

Hey pallies, likes we totally totally thrilled to likes today begin our month long celebration of "The Day That Coolness Came To Earth".....the day that our most beloved Dino descended to our planet on June 7, 1917...and likes have we got an awesomely amazin' hugely homagin' of our most beloved Dino announcement to share....potently powerfully perfect to sets the touchin' tone of deep devotion to our Dino!

From the blog  "Il Giornale di Montesilvano  - Per L'Abruzzo, affacciato sul mondo ..." that translates to: "The Journal of Montesilvano - For Abruzzo , overlooking the world" comes news that Montesilvano's Councillor Carlandrea Falcone is proposin' that their new convention center be named for our one and only DINO!  As youse Dino-philes will recall Montesilvano is the mother earth of our Dino as his father Gaetano Crocetti hailed from there.

Regular readers of ilovedinomartin knows that this city of our Dino's origins  each year honors our King of Cool by givin' out the Dean Martin award and just a couple of years ago, on our Dino's birthday, named a park in his honor....THE DEAN MARTIN PARK!  You can read more 'bout these details by puttin: "Montesilvano" in ilovedinomartin's search drive.

Likes today on this first day of our month long celebration of "The Day That Coolness Came To Earth" we are deeply delighted to share Councillor Carlandrea Falcone wise words of deepest appreciato for namin' their newest public buildin', the convention center, after our Dino.

Speakin' of taggin' the center after our Dino, Falcone states, " We thought then, a name that is synonymous with popularity, successful and internationally known."  We couldn't 'gree more with Mr. Falcone as likes who is more popular,  more successful and more internationally known then our Dino?  Know we think!  Falcone goes on to speak so beautifully and boldly 'bout our Dino sayin' " Dean Martin was a legend cinema and a singer appreciated."  We so so totally agree and will be lookin' forward to confirmation of this most stunnin'ly steller suggestion.

We salute Councillor Carlandrea Falcone for such a swank suggestion and for the pallies at "The Journal of Montesilvano - For Abruzzo , overlooking the world" for spreadin' the news worldwide.

Falcone : "Let's call the convention center in Dean Martin "

Entitle Palacongressi Montesilvano to Dean Martin, born Dino Crocetti, popular American singer, son of montesilvanese Gaetano Crocetti. This is the proposal of Councillor Carlandrea Falcone, shared by the Commerce Commission and that soon will land in the Executive.

"The convention center - Falcone explains - as well as being a focal point of Montesilvano, just a few steps from the structures of our city, is the ideal place to host exhibitions, conferences and concerts of international importance. It is an important business card that requires a more precise identification. We thought then, a name that is synonymous with popularity, successful and internationally known. It could therefore become "Pala Dean Martin, culture, entertainment and sport." Dean Martin was a legend cinema and a singer appreciated. To name the convention center at this Hollywood star could be a source of additional attraction for the organizers of international events. "

Falcone: “Intitoliamo il Palacongressi a Dean Martin”

Montesilvano
