Dean Martin's hometown: When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that's Steubenville, Ohio.

The one and only Dino, Steubenville's favorite son

The one and only Dino mural

Conveniently located next to Kroger's Supermarket

There's Dino fun to be had at the Steubenville Visitors Center

You're nobody til Tom Tom loves you

Steubenville has some first-class murals

Nobody was a cooler entertainer than Dean Martin. For decades he was everyone's favorite breezy, tux-wearing, skirt-chasing, pseudo-drunk crooner. He was the guy with the "who cares?" attitude that Frank Sinatra always tried to be like but was too intense a person to pull off. You would have expected him to have been from a swingin' cosmopolitan place like New York or Chicago, but he was born and raised in the unlikely industrial rustbelt town of Steubenville in eastern-most Ohio, not too far from Pittsburgh on the Ohio river. Wikipedia says "During its heyday in the period of the 1940s-60s, Steubenville was popularly known as "Little Chicago," a nickname that, on the one hand, evoked the city's prolific industry and downtown bustle, while on the other hand suggesting Steubenville's reputation for crime, gambling, and corruption." The town today is a hardscrabble yet earnest place, trying to beautify and better itself despite some hard times (and what smells like the fumes from a chemical processing plant in the air). It has Fort Steuben, a strategic camp from the post-Revolutionary era. It also has 25 beautiful murals painted on the outside of downtown buildings. Really nice ones. But Dino is still the main attraction here. His mural is the nicest and it's next to the Kroger's Supermarket, where everybody can see it. And they've renamed a stretch of Rt. 7, the main drag, Dean Martin Boulevard. It doesn't pass by glamorous casinos and nightclubs, though...just smoky power plants and rusty steel bridges, but, hey, they did the best they could. And if you're in the area this Thursday through Sunday (June 18-21), they're having their yearly Dean Martin Festival, which should be a gasser, pallie, a real gasser. Everybody loves somebody sometime.

Let's Drink To Dino!!

I've written on several occasions of my favourite singer, Frank Sinatra. More recently I did a caricature tribute to Bobby Darin. With today's subject of Dean Martin, I now complete the triumvirate of my favourite male singers. Yes, more often than not, one of these three legends is heard crooning from my stereo, as I still yearn for those wonderful years when the radio airwaves were ruled by Italian American baritones. Actually, I had hoped to write this tribute to Dean for his birthday on June 7th, but I'd been on vacation the week before and had no time to draw the caricature at that time.

I am of course a huge fan of The Rat Pack, not only for their music, but also for their breezy attitude and brash humour, so refreshing when compared to today's stifling (and in my opinion, unhealthy) "politically correct" sensitivities that seek to find offense in any off-the-cuff remark. As a cartoonist, I have no time for this latter day nonsense, and much prefer the freewheeling style of Frank, Dean and Sammy. The joke of course is that the Las Vegas routines of The Rat Pack were satirically puncturing the absurdity of ethnic intolerance, but did so through allowing Frank and Dean to behave like frat boys, getting in good-natured digs at Sam, who ultimately came off as both the sympathetic character and the most dignified, yet always somehow getting in a jab or two back at them.

It's always struck me as pretty curious how Frank and Dean ended up as best buddies, as they are actually quite different in many ways. Whereas Frank was a political animal and very passionate about causes he believed in, Dean seemed to prefer not to get too involved and often couldn't work up much passion about something one way or the other. For example, it was Frank who was solidly behind getting JFK elected President, staging fundraisers and using personal clout to sway voters (infamously among the teamsters union). In contrast, Dean was merely along for the ride, showing up to perform at fundraisers more as a favour to Frank than due to any personal political motivation. He'd likely rather have spent the time on the golf course instead, or on his couch back home watching a western on TV.

In their Rat Pack concerts in Vegas, Dean was the court jester sent out first to warm up the audience through feigned inebriation, slurred jokes and humourously altered lyrics to some of his songs. When Frank emerged later for his set, it was a much more serious presentation of his song repertoire, with just the occasional glib aside to the crowd. Dean was certainly the more gifted comic of the two, with an easy humour and perfectly timed delivery. Frank often made remarks that seemed forced and weren't really very funny (except maybe to him). It is likely because of this less than comfortable approach that Frank was not as successful as Dean in hosting a TV variety show, having briefly tried and failed at it several years before Dean went on to a highly successful run with his own Dean Martin Variety Show that lasted for years on NBC. Frank was too intense for a weekly show, whereas Dean's easygoing style made him a natural host that viewers looked forward to spending time with.

There was a trade-off however, in that Frank has to be acknowledged as the more passionate of the two when it came to their recording careers. Frank could sing all manner of songs convincingly, whether it was a swinging, breezy number like Witchcraft, or a heartbreaking ode to rejection and loneliness like One For My Baby, or the wistful It Was a Very Good Year. Though Dean was a wonderful singer, his choice of song material always seemed to remain on the light and breezy side, as I really can't recall him singing anything of great emotional depth. He could sing romantic ballads, but never with the yearning that Frank could imbue them with. His forte seemed to be odes to the swinging bachelor life, with a martini and a babe always within easy reach, my favourite being his rendition of Baby, It's Cold Outside. Interestingly, although both Frank and Dean were proud of their Italian heritage, it was only Dean who included a lot of olive oil saturated Italian ballads in his song catalog, with Frank only dabbling in that genre with his 60s hit, Domani.

I suspect Frank in many ways not only admired Dean, but was likely a little envious of those traits that he himself lacked. It also seems that Dean was alone among Frank's friends in being able to say no to him, while still remaining in his good favour. Frank counted on his cronies hanging out with him and sharing some laughs at the bar until the wee small hours of the morning. Yet Dean was able to get away with often declining the invitation, instead heading back home to bed for a good night's sleep so he could be out the next morning for an early tee off time on the green. Though Frank was one to infamously hold grudges against those who wouldn't jump through his hoops, Dean seemed to be spared his wrath and perhaps was the only guy whom Frank actually admired for his contrariness. Maybe that's also how Dean's fans respond to him as well - as a guy they admire who always marched to the beat of his own drum, critics be damned. Here's to ya' Dino!

For the ultimate Dino site, check out Dino Martin Peters' blog.

(By the way, I dedicate this post to my ol' buddy in Ottawa, Jack Tremblay, another one of Dino's biggest fans. This one's for you, pallie!)

And finally, here's a clip of Dean at his playful best. Check out the part where he's waiting for his cue to resume after the backup singers are through - just priceless!

The Tao of Dean Martin?

Hey pallies, likes here's a dude tagged Waldo at his blog "To Exist Is To Change," who havin' read some of Deepak Chopra's book, has come to the Dinoconclusion that Chopra is simply esposin' our Dino's philosophy of life...but then our Dino was always ahead of his time. When I left some Dinopatter for this dude, I told him how Nick Tosches' once described our Dino as "an American Buddha."

Certainly there is no better philosophy of livin' then our Dino's and cool to see this dude recognizin' it by readin' Chopra's tome. To read this in it's original format, just clicks on the tagg of this Dinogram. In true Dinophilosophy, DMP

The Tao of Dean Martin?
I used to try to live by a motto that went something like: "When faced when an important decision, imagine the two people you most respect in the world are in the room with you, and act accordingly." Now, I've certainly made some choices in my life - some rash, and some considered - that violated that ethic. But I've also made some choices and grown in some great ways when I ignored that idea as well. So which is the better guide: One's inner voice, or a set of ideals based on the behavior of those you admire?

Deepak Chopra,* in his book "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success," advocates the following:

"Remain in the state of self-referral. This means remain established in the awareness of your true Self - your spirit, your connection to the field of pure potentiality. It also means not to look at yourself through the eyes of the world, or allow yourself to be influenced by the opinions and criticisms of others."

Taken literally, that is a bold approach to life. Is he suggesting that we should ignore the counsel of those who we admire? Should we hold to our own individual sense of wisdom or morality, even if it alienates those closest to us or isolates us from the community? Or is Chopra suggesting this on a micro, rather than macro scale? Should I refer only to my inner self when making mundane choices like selecting a new dry cleaner or choosing to wear flip-flops to a funeral, but heed the wisdom of the surrounding culture in larger issues, even if it impinges upon my sense of pure potentiality? I would hope that he is not advocating such hypocisy, yet in a dozen ways per day, we each make private choices that we might not if they were to be examined under the glare of public review.

Which brings me back to my original guidelines of making choices as if those you admired were critiquing your actions. Could that possibly be a valid approach? Assuming those two people whom I admire most aren't in the room when I make a decision, then I could only suppose what they might think or do if they were in my shoes. And those suppositions would be based on their relatively public persona: Since we usually don't usually have insight into the dozens of private choices that others make each day, can we really know with absolute certainty which way their moral compasses point?

And that leads the question of consequences. Chopra goes on the suggest that after embracing self-referral, we should "relinquish attachment to the outcome" and appreciate "the wisdom of uncertainty." He also suggests that we "let the universe handle the details." I don't think he means that we shouldn't care about the consequences of our actions, nor could he possibly mean that when faced with a choice, we should imagine everyone in the universe is in the room with us. I think that he's just trying to say to make your choices, stick by them, and let the chips fall where they may. If that sounds more like the wisdom of the Rat Pack than of Eastern philosophy, then so be it. If so, then it just goes to show how underrated Dean Martin really was.

* I've read exactly 78 pages of Chopra to date, and I still can't decide if there's any respectably original thought in his book, or if it's just fortune cookie wisdom. I'm leaning toward the latter.

a supremely steller tribute to our Dino

Hey pallies, in addition to the last Dinovid posted by our greatest of greatest pallie Dorota, is this supremely stellar Dinovid of 'nother small screen tribute to our Dino....featurin' our Dino's producer Greg Garrison, our Dino's girlpallie Deana, and Dino-costar Miss Angie Dickinson among others.

Likes the last Dinovid posted this Dinotrib touches me deeply and certainly makes me yearn for our Dino more then ever. Again, many thanks to Miss Dorota for her Dinodevotion to the cause of liftin' up the name of our Dino and helpin' more and more pallies to grow in their Dinopassion. Dinodevotedly, DMP btw, don't have a clue where or when this Dinoclip was created, any of you pallies have any Dinoknowledge on this?

Dinotribute Upon Our Dino's Passin'

Hey pallies, here is a new-to-me Dinovid posted recently at youtube by a Dinoholic's Dinoholic, Miss Dorota, who hails from Germany. Over the course of the last several years Dorotha has posted hundreds of Dinovids at youtube spendin' many, many hours of her time liftin' of the name of Dino and showin' her Dinopure Dinodevotion to our great man.

Because of copyright laws, Miss Dorota has often had her Dinoclips removed from youtube, but like the truest of true Dinoholic, each time the vids have been removed our Dorotha has patiently and every faithfully simply put them up again, usin' a different Dinotag.

Here is only of the latest of Miss Dorota's Dinotreasures to be shared.....television footage shared on the occasion of our Dino's passin'....the greater portion of it comin' from Entertainment Tonight. I was deeply moved as I watch the ET trib to our Dino and am so deeply indebted to our Dinoholic pallie Dorota for sharin' this with the larger Dinofamily of Dinoaddicts.

the Dean Martin story makes me like him even more

Hey pallies, Dinoinspiration continues to be found all over the web. This mornin' found the cool Dinomention below at a site tagged "lbo-talk (Left Business Observer Talk-----clicks on tagg to goes there). A dude tagged wrobert speakin' on a thread 'bout Dali and Worhal and their personalities concludes his post with this Dinotale from Tosches how our Dino make it clear to the jer where he stood with our great man after the break up.

How cool that our Dino's actions makes wrobert "like him even more." How great to see more and more pallies liftin' of the name of Dino and speakin' of their Dinoadmiration.... Dinodiggin', DMP

Then there's Dean Martin talking to Jerry Lewis after their breakup. In the Martin biography by Nick Tosches he says the two were on a pier in Atlantic City and Lewis says to Martin that he thought what they had together was something like love. Martin told him, "to me you're nothing but a fucking dollar sign."

Funny thing is while your Dali story and the ones about Warhol leave me kind of cold, the Dean Martin story makes me like him even more.

Hey pallies, among yesterDinoday's new was how our Dino inspired a young Irish dude to writin' a song 'bout drinkin' and today we hear how our Dino is playin' a stellar role in a new detective novel tagged "Freezer Burn."

Thanks to blogger Harriet Klausner at "The Merry Genre Go Round Reviews" (clicks on tagg to goes there) we learn 'bout Miss Gayle Carline's debut novel that features a character tagged Benny Needles who diggs our Dino to the max...reads 'bout it below.

And if you wanna reads more 'bout how Miss Carline's prose features our Dino clicks on this link.. http://www.gaylecarline.com/freezerburn.html

Just makes me feel so Dinowonderful to see the varied ways the name of our Dino is bein' lifted up in so many and varied Dinoways....just more proof that no one ever was or ever will be as cool as our King of Cool... In lovin' Dinodevotion, DMP

Freezer Burn-Gayle Carline
By harstan
Freezer Burn

Gayle Carline

Echelon, Aug 2009, $13.99

ISBN: 9781590806074

Former cleaning lady Peri Minneopa is now a licensed private investigator though she does not carry a gun. She promised her lover Placenta Police Detective Skip Carlton that she would only work safe cases like background checks and taking photos from a distance of cheating spouses. Her latest case involves a client Benny Needles who is a Dean Martin fanatic seeking an ice tray in his freezer used by his hero with an autograph he doesn’t want rubbed off by the ice.

Instead she finds a severed hand with an expensive ring on a finger. Benni swears he has no idea whose hand it is, where the rest of the body is, and how it got into his freezer. Skip questions Benny and believes the frightened Martin aficionado is telling the truth that he is innocent and ignorant re the hand. They trace the ring to a homeless woman who admits she stole from a woman in a nursing home. It was supposed to be a copy of the Forever Roses ring to be auctioned at Christies in order for Kevin Conway to pay off his gambling debts. He had no idea that his ring was a copy and he wants to get the real ring back. So do other people; as someone steals it from the police evidence room. Peri goes after the killer, ignoring Skip’s warning about murderers’ murder, but soon understands what her boyfriend meant.

Peri is a strong willed person who once she makes up her mind nothing stops her; Skip can nudge, but not budge his obstinate girlfriend. She wants to prove to herself she is a P.I. by solving the case though she understands her first mission is to keep the eccentric Benny out of jail as she believes he is innocent. Her lover reluctantly supports her because he fears she will risk her life with or without him. The investigative story line is fun to follow with it ties to Dino and the romance between the cop and the rookie, who behaves somewhat like an amateur sleuth as she learns the ropes the hard way which enhances an enjoyable whodunit.

Harriet Klausner

So Dean said .............

Hey pallies, Dinowisdom keeps aboundin' all over the web. Checks out this dialogue between a chick tagged Dagne and a dude tagged Adam at the "Infinite Potentials Series" site (clicks on tagg to goes there). Am just sharin' the brief portion that leads up to and supports our the quotations between our great man and Jack.

Loves to see how Adam (A) quotes a dialogue between our Dino and Mr. Jack Benny in this post on "Economic Order-Crisis-The Wheel of Opportunity." How cool of this dude to share a Dinostory to helps makes his point. The wisdom that our Dino and Mr. Benny share indeed does has such "infinite potential." In the midst of all the ups and downs of late, it certainly is crucial to turns to our Dino for guidance and support to see us through these hard times. Dinowisely, DMP

Economic Order-Crisis-The Wheel of Opportunity

D: Changing diapers isn’t necessarily pleasant but it is part of doing what one loves. The Process of all this changes one’s consciousness so that even the chores and tough stuff can become fun. Sort of back to the physical fitness model. The work out might hurt but somehow it hurts good. And you feel so good and energized afterwards…the shower can be delicious.

A: Dean Martin was driving into the Beverly Hills Country club and he ran into Jack Benny coming out. So Dean said , “Jack, how was golf today?” Jack answered in his classic dead pan way, “Well, the golf was so-so but the towels were wonderful”.

D: So, how does one achieve economic order? Lower one’s economic goals?

A: I’d rather say, one must set wise economic goals and learn to practice voluntary simplicity.

I'm a bit of a Dean Martin fan....!"

Hey pallies, Dinodevotion is poppin' up all over the web. Here is a Brit chick tagged Sandra featured on the cool Brit blogg "One Face For Everyday" by Miss Maxine Moss (clicks on tagg to go there). Miss Sandra proclaims as part of her bio that I'm a bit of a Dean Martin fan....!" \

Sandra is married to this town's local butcher and was working in the store when I asked to take her photograph. She also hates being photographed. I am always especially grateful and grovelly when people that hate it say yes!

Martinis for Dino

Hey pallies, more Dinoproclamation from the Cleveland Plain Dealer...the newpaper that features Dinolovin' John Petkovic's column "After Dark." Martinis for Dino and musical theater: Thursday night specials
by Plain Dealer Entertainment Editors Thursday June 11, 2009, 12:20 AM
Today is Thursday, June 11, and here are The Plain Dealer Entertainment Editors' picks for having fun tonight.

Raise a glass - no, make that a wet bar, a liquor cabinet and a jar of olives - in honor of Dean Martin. Thursday, June 7, would be the 92nd birthday of the patron saint of John Petkovic's After Dark column. (OK, so it's four days later than the actual birthday, but it IS still Thursday.)

The legendary Dean Martin would be 92 years old.

The Steubenville native, born Dino Crocetti, tore it up when he moved to Cleveland in 1940. Formerly a two-bit blackjack dealer, he took the name Dino Martini and landed his first steady gig crooning for $35 a week at the Vogue Room of the now-closed Hollenden Hotel on East Sixth Street. Then came Hollywood, the Rat Pack and Vegas.

The legacy of the top-shelf entertainer, who died in 1995, is a mixed drink that's as smooth as it is fermented. So party with him, in spirit. Remember, he's the guy - or one of the guys - who reputedly said: "I feel sorry for people who don't drink because when they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're gonna feel all day." Dino, legend has it, was fond of the Gibson variation of the classic martini. Here's how to make one at home:

2 1/2 oz. gin (or vodka)
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
1 or 3 cocktail onions for garnish
Shake with ice in cocktail shaker, strain into chilled cocktail glass and enjoy!

If you prefer to salute Dino at one of the Cleveland area's many happy hours, check out Petkovic's recommendations at cleveland.com/goingout and cleveland.com/afterdark

"I was reading a biography of Dean Martin at the time...."

Hey pallies, Dinoinspiration continues to abound all over the Dinouniverse. Just found this cool post at hot press 'bout an Irish group tagged The Last Tycoons, whose lead singer Steve, has composed this cool song "The Dry Law" that is the lead single on their up-comin' debut album.

Read how Steve 'fessed up that the song was inspired by his readin' of a Dinobio...sounds to me pallies likes it was Nick Tosches' stellar Dinotome. How wonderful to hear this news 'bout this young up and comin' musician who has taken his inspiration from our Dino's life and legacy. Please clicks on the tagg of this Dinogram to goes to hot press so you can hear this amazin' song for yourself.

How wonderful to know that our Dino is such an inspiration to so many in so many places.... Dinodelightedly, DMP

'The Dry Law' by The Last Tycoons

11 Jun 2009

Have a listen to The Last Tycoons' lead single from their upcoming debut album, due out this September.

A bluesy lament on prohibition, 'The Dry Law' offers a taste of what we can expect from the Dubliners' debut long player.

As lead singer Steve says: "I quit drinking and started to write a song about it." And although he was off the booze just a month, it seems the dry spell helped inspire him, along with a certain Rat Pack crooner: "I was reading a biography of Dean Martin at the time and there was all this stuff about him working in speakeasies and casinos as a kid, surrounded by all these gangsters. So I just put the two things together and made up this story about it."

It'll put a thirst on you, for sure!

Basically, the thing that influenced me most was the Dean Martin roasts.

Hey pallies, so loves to learn of others who have come under the Dinoinfluence and made it big....well here is part of an article tagged "Insult queen Lisa Lampanelli comes to San Diego" by Scott Marks of San Diego News Netwark site (clicks on tagg to read it all).

How cool to hear this Lisa chick proclaim that her one and only influence to the top was the Dean Martin Roasts. Am likes kinda confused why she doesn't just come out and say that our Dino was her one and only mentor 'cause what woulda the roasts be without our Dino...and who knows hows to cracks the jokes better then our great man?!??!

Anyway greats to see yet 'nother example of how our Dino has shown the way to yet 'nother entertainer. Dinoawed, DMP

The 47-year-old insult comic, whose main stock in trade is ripping apart taboos, wanted to make one thing perfectly clear from the start: “Nobody influenced me.”

So much for throwing out a list of possible comedic mentors for the Queen of Mean to pass judgment on.

“You might as well stop now,” she interjected. “I didn’t even watch comedy until I started in the business. Basically, the thing that influenced me most was the Dean Martin roasts. I used to watch those on NBC with my family, so that’s what I thought comedy was all about. You know, making fun of people. They liked you, you liked them and everybody was happy at the end. So I never watched stand-up at all.”

French Topple Jerry Lewis Statue, Declare Obama “Greatest American”

PARIS - Obama-mania swept The City of Lights on President Obama’s first visit to France, and thousands of cheering Parisians lined the River Seine to catch a glimpse of America’s superstar head of state.

The ecstatic crowd worked itself into a fevered frenzy as the President’s motorcade approached, then hordes of revelers suddenly broke through police barriers and charged into the square surrounding iconic Notre Dame Cathedral where they toppled the statue of American slapstick comedian Jerry Lewis, who is revered in France.

“Obama is now the greatest American!” shouted a man in the crowd.

Some in the throng began chanting for Mr. Lewis to give Mr. Obama the Légion d’honneur bestowed on him by the French Minister of Culture.

Others compared Mr. Lewis unfavorably to Mr. Obama: “Obama never would have split up with a gorgeous man like Dean Martin!” screamed one gay man.

Some displayed signs calling for Mr. Obama to replace Mr. Lewis as host of this year’s charity fundraising telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The President did little to quell the French adulation for him, or the criticisms of Mr. Lewis. An aide said that Mr. Obama plans to deliver “a major address” next week calling for “a reevaluation” of Mr. Lewis’ talent in which the President plans to take the beloved comic to task “for his frequent lapses into sentimentality, and his tendency to let gags go on far too long.”

" She'll get the house. Doesn't matter. I could never find it anyway."

Hey pallies, found this cool retellin' of this Dinostory as part of the prose "Marriage Hollywood Style" at the blogg "TV show channel, tv guide, tv links, tv online." (To checks out the whole blog post on Hollywood marriages clicks on the tagg as usual)

It's the familar Dinotale how our Dino never wanted to have parties at his pad while married to the Jeanne. Loves how our Dino called the cops to get the partiers outta his place.

But this story always gives me Dinopause, 'cause after our Dino cuts the ties with the Jeanne he took to the disco scene 'specially The Candy Store Discotheque where he was seen with his young amores...specially Cathy with the candified K. So am includin' the recently found Dinopix of our Dino and Miss Cathy dancin' away at The Candy Store.

Gotta 'fess up that I does loves to see the changes in our Dino's lifestyle once in freed himself from the Jeanne....he became more and more his cool, hip, and swingin' self. Dinodelighted, DMP

"Sometimes even a little partying is too much. When Dean Martin announced that he was divorcing his wife Jeannie he joked," She'll get the house. Doesn't matter. I could never find it anyway." One sore point during their union was Dean's unwillingness to have any company over, his main concern was getting up early to play golf. One time Martin reluctantly acquiesced to his wife's request to have a social gathering at their house. At ten pm Dean excused himself and went upstairs to his room. A half hour later Jeannie knocked on his door," Dean come out! The police are here." An apologetic officer explained that they had received several calls about another loud obnoxious party at the Martin household. "But we never have parties," said Jeannie. "Never mind that Jeannie. You heard the officer. OK, everybody out." The next day after rising early and playing a nice round of golf, old Dino confessed to her that he had made the phone calls using several different voices."

Celebrating Dean Martin's Birthday
Yesterday, June 7th, was the 92nd birthday of Dean Martin. Happy Birthday to the King of Cool himself. Dino is definitely the coolest cat to ever live. There's never been anybody quite like him. Dino's one of a kind. I wish I just had a small percentage of the cool and hip swagger that Dino possesses. I would be a happy and content fella then. Dean Martin epitomizes what it means to be cool. He is the very definition of it. While many of us try to be cool, it oozes from Dino naturally. It's always been effortless with him. I raise a toast in honor of my favorite entertainer of all time. Cheers!

I came across this picture by Drew Friedman. I thought it would be great to share it with my pallies here.
