Desert Sun, Number 112, 13 December 1969 — Dean Martin Plans To Marry Another [ARTICLE]

Dean Martin Plans To Marry Another

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (UPI)Singer Dean Martin portrays a swinger in his television and nightclub acts—and it appears his private life is beginning to live up to that image. It was learned Friday that Martin intends to marry a 22 | year - old, blonde, blue - eye'd beauty queen, Gail Renshaw', who recently was named Miss World-USA. The Arlington, Va., girl, 3C years Martin’s junior, will be his second beauty queen wife. Martin's present wife, Jeanne Biegger Martin, was queen of the Orange Bowl Parade in Miami in 1949. Martin, a celebrity guest in the parade, walked alongside her float and asked her for a date. A whirlwind romance followed and the couple w ; as married that September. A tearful Mrs. Martin an- ; nounced the end of that marriage last Wednesday when she told newsmen that she was seeking a divorce because Martin told her he was in love with another woman. “I will comply w'ith his wdshes,” she said, “proceedings will begin immediately. “My deepest concern at the present is for our children.” The couple has three children: Doan Jr., 18; Ricci, 16; and Gina, 12. In addition, they raised four other children by Martin’s first marriage. Martin, who is hosting the 14th anniversary celebration of the Riviera Hotel here, spent the day Friday revamping his act, which contained such references to his wife as “keep those cards and letters coming to Jeanne and me.” Friday night Martin’s daughter by a previous marriage, Gail, opened the private “Dean Martin Night” show in the Riviera Lounge, Only she and Martin appeared before a crowd of some 800 to 900 “high rollers from cast of the Mississippi” who were admitted by invitation only. Martin has been in this gambling capital for the past several days, hosting the hotel’s five-day anniversary party, which began Wednesday. Film editors at NBC in Burbank, Calif., w'here Martin’s shows are taped, were editing out references to Mrs. Martin on 29 of Martin's shows which 1 already have been taped.

On This Day In Dino-history: October 13, 1969

Hey pallies, likes it's 'nother deep deep day in all of Dino-history.  The date is October 13 in the year of our Dino 1969, the place, our Dino's playground...'Vegas baby 'Vegas!  The time,,,,after our Dino's swingin' show.  Likes that's the settin' pallies for one of the most  tremendously transformin' times in the life and times of our most most beloved Dino.

What happened pallies?  Likes we are turnin' to wonderfully wise words from our Dino's beautiful biographer Mr. Nick Tosches, scriber of "DINO: Living High In The Dirty Business Of Dreams," to tell this Dino-tale as only he can....

Gail Renshaw was a blond, blue-eyed, twenty-two-year-old divorcĂ©e from Falls Church, Virginia.  She had been Miss Speedway, Miss Good Grooming, and Miss Snow Queen.   In September 1969, in Baltimore, she became Miss World-USA.   Bob Hope, who crowned her, gave her a small part a few weeks later on his television special "Roberta."   Her crown bore the jewels of duty as well as glamour:  As Miss World-USA, she also took on the responsibilities of "ambassadress of goodwill" for Frostie Root Beer, one of the pageant's sponsors.   Her manager, pageant director Al Patricelli of Bridgeport, Connecticut brought the ambassadress to Las Vegas in October to work a greeting-card convention before leaving for London to compete as the American representative in the Miss World Contest.   Dean was at the Riviera.   Dropping Bob Hope's name, Patricelli called the Riviera's press agent, Tony Zoppi, in the hope of having his client photographed with Dean.   "Bring her backstage after the show," Dean told Zoppi on October 13.  That night, wearing a dime-store crown and a MR. WONDERFUL-U.S.A. banner, he sat for a few pictures with her.  "The least you can do now is have dinner with me," he said to her after the photographer left.

When they went to dinner that first night, Dean brought along his daughter Gail who was two years older than the ambassadress.  After that, they met alone.   The ambassadress telephoned Ma and Pa Renshaw at their home in Alexandria, Virginia.   "You won't believe this," she told her mother, Edna, "but I'm in love."

We stand in absolute awe of Mr. Nick Tosches' retellin' of the story of our Dino.  No one, and we  mean no one has ever come close to his incredible insights and fantastic flair for words that offer keen knowin' of our most  most beloved Dino.  It is true that no one ever did or ever will truly "know" our King of Cool....but Mr. Tosches comes closer then anyone ever has in doin' so.

Look forward to more powerfully potent posts on this Dino-theme in the days to come here at ilovedinomartin.

Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin’s 20-Year Rift Following 10 Years of Friendship & 16 Joint Movies

By Camila Santiago

From close friends to not speaking to each other for a decade, the famous comedy duo parted ways due to “creative differences” but they got back together on stage in a remarkable reunion, arranged by Frank Sinatra.

In the ‘50s, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin were the #1 world’s top box office earners. When they were on stage together, they’d cause a frenzy and drew laughter from the public. The singer once Steve Lawrance shared with People:

“When these two guys got together and opened at the Copacabana, you would not believe the pandemonium that existed in that club. It just went nuts."

LEWIS BEFORE MARTIN

Jerry Lewis is often celebrated as the king of comedy. He gave his first glimpse as a comedian at 12 years old and a few years later, he dropped from high school to perform in New York City.

Dean Martin came from a quite similar background — he also left school to pursue a career as a comedian in New York, and that’s how they met.

WHEN LEWIS MEET MARTIN

Lewis spotted Martin performing at New York City nightclub. He got positively surprised by Martin’s talent — a raw and unique comedy style. They had the chance to finally meet each other playing the Havana-Madrid club on the same night in 1946.

American actor and singer Dean Martin (1917 - 1995, left) with his screen partner, comedian Jerry Lewis, circa 1955.

When they met, there was instant chemistry between the two, so they decided to team up and began performing bits together. Lewis asked the owners of Atlantic City's 500 Club if Martin could join him.

What looked like an odd duo at first turned into a runaway success for both comedians, and that was just the beginning of the Lewis & Martin comedy duo. The popular nightclub’s initial act consisted of Martin singing and Lewis clowning.

The combination of two different personas has called Paramount’s executives' attention. Their first film, “My Friend Irma,”  was a huge success. That led the duo to perform many other movies together, including "The Stooge," "Living It Up," "Artists and Models," and "Hollywood or Bust."

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, entertainers and hosts of their own NBC radio show, react at the news that the presentation of Redbook magazine's 14th Annual Silver Cup Movie Award will be made on their show.

They also went on to star in the Colgate-sponsored show “The Colgate Comedy Hour,” as well as a series of radio programs and television shows.

THE FALLING OUT

The much-publicized life and work of Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin started their feuds. The duo started to argue frequently, leading them to dissolve the partnership and, ultimately, the friendship.

The feud between them came into public dominion during the premiere of their 1954 film "Living It Up." They didn’t talk to each other neither, even during the final production of the film “Hollywood or Bust.”

Portrait of American actors Dean Martin (born Dino Crocetti, 1917 - 1995) and Jerry Lewis (born Jerome Levitch, 1926 - 2017), both in plaid shirts, late 1950s or early 1960s.

People were concerned about the first signs of a split. To calm the public nerves down, a Paramount executive told The New York Post:

“There’s no panic about it. These are two smart boys, too smart to give up a $5,000,000 operation because of a spat.”

Even critics got along with the money aspect of it. John Lester, their most perceived critic, believed that they would never break permanently because there were many people and too much money involved in their partnership.

Despite popular belief, the comedy duo indeed decided to part ways. In another attempt to keep the comedy duo together, Daily Variety’s editor, Joe Schoenfeld, wrote a public "letter" directed to them:

“Since it isn’t so serious a matter as a split of the spoils, there can’t possibly be any breach in your personal relationship that can’t be repaired by the application of a lot of understanding and a little common sense.”

He went on to say that there were more reasons for them to remain as a team than to separate. The editor stated that he believed in both individual talents but argued that it wasn’t out of coincidence that the public made them top box office attractions together.

American singer, actor and comedian Dean Martin (1917 - 1995), circa 1960.

Nothing changed, however. They had already made up their minds. According to the book “Side By Side: Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis On TV and Radio,” Martin’s lawyer sent a formal letter to Lewis stating his desire for a solo show.

Martin was the one who told the public he was ready to do a single. Despite his contradictory statements to different reporters at the time — he’d say that he didn’t want to end the partnership to one, but then he'd say that their work “wasn’t a love affair,” and it was business to others.

Despite the estrangement, they made a final presentation at the Copacabana in New York City, ten years after their first routine.

American comedy actor Jerry Lewis, with his mouth open at the piano., circa 1966.

After the last show, according to the biographical writer Neil Daniels, fans felt like it was a sudden divorce. It shocked them because most people thought they’d go on forever.

A BEAUTIFUL REUNION

Twenty years later, an unexpected reunion would take the public by surprise again. During an annual Theleton in 1976, Frank Sinatra was performing live.

Sinatra had orchestrated an on-air reunion between the comedy friends and former partners. He hid Martin in one of the dressing rooms, and after finishing his live show, he presented Jerry with a couple of donations.

Singers Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Jerry Lewis perform during the 1976 telecast of The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon in Los Angeles, California.

The singer told Jerry he would like to call a friend of his, who “loved what Lewis did every year” at the Telethon. Martin came to the stage, and they hugged, kissed each other while the audience stood for a standing ovation, which lasted over a minute.

Nancy Sinatra revealed that her father kept his plan secret and no one knew about it. Jerry Lewis’ manager said that Sinatra would be the only one who could have achieved “something like that.”

Martin’s family, who was watching the show from home, couldn’t believe what they saw. Deana, Martin’s daughter “got chills and called her sister immediately.” Deana revealed that they loved each other.

US humorist, comedian, director and singer Jerry Lewis attends the Telethon, France's biggest annual fund-raising event of live television transmission, on December 6, 1991 at La Maison de la Radio, in Paris.

In 1991, the duo made a comeback with the 5th Dimension after 17 years since their last performance at the Copacabana. Dean Martin died four years later at the age of 78. Lewis lived until he was 91 and passed away in 2017.

The photograph collections of the New York City Municipal Archives are deservedly well-known for their extensive documentation of the physical city—the buildings, streets, highways, bridges and parks. The 1940 and mid-1980s “tax” photograph collections are perhaps the best examples. But there are “people” pictures, too, most notably in the mayoral photograph collections.

Hey pallies, likes after the last couple of Dino-days awesome accent on our Dino as swingin' spyster Matt Helm likes we just had to check out what other delightful Dino-centric Dino-devotionals coulda be found at "Pop '66!  -  Where the Action Is: Movies, Comics, Book, Movies and more!"  And, we are totally totally thrilled to say that blogster "jfire2" has swankly shared more Dino-action for our Dino-delight.

Today we offer all youse Dino-philes great supreme screen caps from our Dino's 1966  coolest of cool comedy western "Texas Across The River."  Below are a half-dozen perfect poses taken from this big screen funniest of fun flick, as well as one of the potent posters used to premierly promote it.

As we write this, the Dino-thought just came to us that 1966 is the precise same Dino-year that the first two Helmers were filmed.  Likes we did a wee bit of Dino-searchin' and if the info we found is correct, our Dino sandwiched "Texas Across The River' between Helmer uno and Helmer duo.  More proof positive that our Dino was no slacker when it came to workin'.

As a Dino-bonus likes we went over to youtube and lovin'ly located the original trailer for the flick and share it at the end of this Dino-gram.  This thrillin' trailer calls "Texas Across The River" "The Swingin'est Fun Romp That Ever Fractured The Frontier."  Likes we once 'gain thanks "jfire2" for sharin' more 'n more Dino-treasure at his blog.  To checks this out in it's original source, likes simply clicks on the tag of this Dino-report.
