Rainbows are gettin' back in style
There's sunshine everywhere
And I'm learning how to smile
The only time it rains, is to cool things for a while
But since I met you, I can't forget you
The rainbows are back in style
There's not a thing in the world that I'd rather do
Than just sit and stare at your face
You're so doggone pretty
That you made the world a whole lot happier place
Life's worth livin' and the love that you're givin'
Has made me feel this way
And the rainbows have chased the clouds away
Rainbows are gettin' back in style
There's sunshine everywhere
And I'm learning how to smile
The only time it rains, is to cool things for a while
But since I met you, I can't forget you
The rainbows are back in style
Your name is like music
And I can't help singin' it over and over again
This happy feeling has got me thinkin' it's heaven I am livin' in
The love we share, puts the magic in the air
And every dream comes true
And the rainbows turn the sky to blue
Rainbows are gettin' back in style
There's sunshine everywhere
And I'm learning how to smile
The only time it rains is to cool things for a while
But since I met you, I can't forget you
The rainbows are back in style
But since I met you, I can't forget you
The rainbows are back in style

Tommorrow In Dino-history: November 30, 1956

Hey pallies, the ol' world wide web continues to be a goldmine chocked full of great Dino-treasure just waitin' to be mined....and that's a huge huge reason we here at ilovedinomartin keeps doin' our best to uncover more and more Dino-devotion for all youse Dino-philes.  While doin' some extra credit Dino-searchin' via google blog search we happened upon the rarest of rare Dino-find of some live croonin' of our most beloved Dino and his bestest of best pallie Mr. Frank Sinatra on November 30, 1956.

First posted on the blog "Crooks And Liars" on December 31, 2009, it took us almost five years to uncover this fantastic find of this November 30, 1956 recordin' our most beloved Dino singin' a trio of classic croons for the Hungarian Relief Concert with Sinatra also doin' some solo work.  All-in-all there is almost 22 minutes of sensational singin'.

We loves how the recordin' begins with the unnamed announcer givin' our great great man the greatest of praise, sayin' "This fella is going to be on the, I think, one of the finest leading men we've ever seen around this town, and he is going to come out here now, and lead you all to a lot of happiness.   And, likes indeed our Dino lays likes a ton of happiness on the crowd as he sings "All Of Me," "Innamorata," and "Is It True What They Say About Dixie." \

Our Dino mentions that it was producer Mr. Joe Pasternak who coaxed his appearance, which let's us know that the concert was around the time that our Dino's first major big screen effort, "Ten Thousand Bedrooms" was bein' released as Pasternak was the producer for that effort.

We are likes totally totally thrilled to be able to share this with all youse Dino-holics, just wishes that it hadn't taken so so long to uncover.  Also, as you will read  below the sharer of this Dino-treasure, Mr. Gordon Skene discovered "the master tapes from the concert)  sitting on a shelf in a garage the better part of forty years before I got the call to "take the junk away".

We wanna express our deepest of deep Dino-appreciato to Skene for sharin' this huge huge Dino-discovery with his readership and eventually with all youse pallies.  Likes makes us wonder what more Dino-gold is out there to be mined.  To checks this out in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.  Always Awed by our Dino, DMP

Newstalgia New Years Eve Music Special - Dean Martin - Frank Sinatra - Hungarian Relief Concert 1956

I can't think of a better way to end up the year than with a special, rare, never-heard-before performance of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin (not together unfortunately, but Dino's in fine form) from the Hungarian Relief Fundraiser put on in Los Angeles on November 30, 1956.

For some reason, this recording has never been issued anywhere - the master tapes sitting on a shelf in a garage the better part of forty years before I got the call to "take the junk away".
Dean had just broken up his act with Jerry Lewis and Sinatra was going through a career change that took would take a dramatic upturn as well. If memory serves (but don't hold me to it), this predates the Ratpack by about a year.

In any event, this is a rare recording and you get to hear it first.

Thanks to everyone for a great 2009 - especially the crew at C&L. It's all been good fun, dusting off history.

Happy New Year - try and stay sane in the meantime. Wait til 2010!

And now, Thanksgiving: A Drama starring Dean Martin as Transman.

Hey pallies, likes in search of more great posts with a Thanksgiving Dino-theme, we were led to type the terms Dean Martin and Thanksgiving into the google blog search engine, and we came 'cross the post "Thanksgiving anxiety" from the new-to-ilovedinomartin blog "theadventuresoftransman."

Likes first we gotta say that the guy who created this blog musta be really cool 'cause like ilovedinomartin they chose to tag their blog with the words joined together.  And, we know that transparentguy has the bestest of best taste in  creatively  craftin' a series of pixs 'n  prose into the Dino-homage, " Thanksgiving: A Drama starring Dean Martin as Transman."

Usually pallies the theme of most of our Givin' Dino Thanks posts are of the more serious nature, and we thanks our great great man for the great great ways he has touched so so many lives in so so many ways....even years after he has departed from our presence.  But, this post gives us the op to share a very very funny look at Thanksgiving and families accentin' our one and only Dino in the most cute and charmin' of ways.

ilovedinomartin shouts out our appreciato to transparentguy for this coolest of cool ways of homagin' our most beloved Dino in the funnest of fun ways...we are just sorry that we did not find this post when it originally appeared last year at this time.  To view this post in it's original format, simply clicks on the tag of this here Dino-report.  Dino-thankfully, DMP  btw pallies, stay tuned as we begin our Dino-winter-month celebration here very very Dino-soon!

Thanksgiving anxiety

"We are so gonna be late ... go put on some pants!" Transman tells Son 2.
“We are so gonna be late … go put on some pants!” Transman tells Son 2.
Transman’s family is planning their holiday get-togethers and Transman is looking forward to it with great fear and trepidation. A dyed-in-the-wool introvert like Transman does not enjoy big social events and even if only the siblings and their families gather, we’re talking 28 attendees in addition to the Patriarch and his blushing bride (all right, maybe Transman exaggerates … they’ve been married for six years or so.)

There will be assorted friends and extended family members, pushing the list up to 40 or 50 people.
The plans keep changing–“We’re doing Thanksgiving at the Patriarch’s!” “Thanksgiving is canceled! We’ll do Christmas instead!” “Thanksgiving is back on! Location to be announced!” “Traditional Thanksgiving and Daisy is doing all the cooking!” “Daisy has to work in the morning; someone else needs to cook.”

“We’re ordering deli platters! Nobody has to cook!” “The Step-Matriarch wants traditional Thanksgiving! She’s too frail to cook it, though.” “We’re handing out Hungry Man TV dinners!”
This is what the holiday planning is always like.

The actual gathering will be “delightfully awkward” as Transman’s best friend likes to describe all of the family gatherings. This is her polite way of describing complete and total systemic dysfunction. There will be graceless, uneasy conversations; passing of judgement on anyone who dares leave the room; drunkenness that leads to emotional outbursts and insults and a whole slew of things that will leave everyone stung and wounded for the next 12 months. Add to all this Transman’s transition as the biggest damn elephant that has ever stomped into a family gathering, and you’ve got one big mess of embarrassment and discomfort for all involved.

And now, Thanksgiving: A Drama starring Dean Martin as Transman.
"Get in that car or I will strangle you!"
“Get in that car or I will strangle you! Your grandfather is waiting for us. Old people hate to wait for anything–especially food.”
"Look! Here comes Transman and his little hooligans!" Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra as Transman's sister and her husband.

"C'mere, you big lug!" Transman, in an uncharacteristic display of affection hugs his brother-in-law, played by Frank Sinatra. "Let go of me or I will crush this cigarette out in your ear!" B-I-L says.

Happy Dino Thanksgiving

Hey pallies, likes 'nother day of givin' Dino-thanks has come our way. When we here at ilovedinomartin pondered what to share in deep deep homage of our most beloved Dino, we just knew that we couldn't sez it better then our amazin' Dino-prosin' pallie Ed who a few years 'go likes scribed the followin' Dino-thankin' Dino-trib...so here are Ed's outstandin' Dino-thoughts durin' our season of "Givin' Dino Thanks."

So pallies, likes sits back and relish each and every one of our Dino-phile Ed's heartfelt, remarkably   revelatory  reflections on our Dino, 'cause they are ladened with the deepest of the deep, the purest of the pure, and the truest of the true Dino-truths.

It's almost  20 long years since our most beloved  Dino walked the earth, but his life and legacy continues to entrall and call all us pallies to know, love, and honor our great man more and more each and every Dino-day.

Thanks Ed for sharin' your Dino-thanks with us in such a cool Dino-way.  We trust as you now have the joy of fatherin' your own little boypallie that you are bringin' him up to loves our Dino likes you do.   We so look forward to the day when you will be able to share more of your Dino-hearted prose with all your pallies here at ilovedinomartin.

Thanks most of all to our Dino...truly we wanna know you, love you, and honor you more each and every Dino-day! Dino-gratefully, DMP

Location? On a stage somewhere, Anytown USA.

Time? When Dino roamed and owned the earth.

Dino: “You know why they call it Plymouth Rock? Those pilgrims backed up their Plymouth into that rock. That’s why they call it Plymouth Rock.”

True Story.
It was Dino that quickly pointed out that America was discovered by a fellow Italian, Amerigo Vespucci. In turn, it was America who discovered Martin, Sinatra, Como, Martino, Bennett, Vale, Laine, Darin, Damone, and Prima. All Italian-American singers who forever changed the American music landscape. Imagine a world without Dean Martin. Elvis has no direction. Sinatra hasn’t a Yin to Yang, and good luck with reviving the Humphrey Bogart-less Holmby Hills Rat Pack. Joey Levitch is still Joey Levitch. Who’s Joey Levitch you ask? Welcome to a Dino-less world. Joey Levitch became Jerry Lewis. The word “cool” would have been forever associated with the weather. The Beatles would still be remembered as being “untouchable”.

Let’s be selfish for a bit. Without Dino, we wouldn't  have seen our fathers settling down in his favorite chair smoking his favorite pipe, spinning his favorite Dino LP. The man who makes my dad happy is the man that makes us happy. Pleasure hasn’t a salesman. Time passes and finds me sitting down in my favorite chair with my favorite beverage, listening to my favorite Dino iPod playlist. Coincidence? Think not my fellow Dino-phile. Dino transcends generations, countries, languages, races, sexes. He touches all! Cool has no color. Cool is ageless. You’re only as far from cool as the nearest Dino LP, CD, book, what have you. If you can’t find cool, pick up a Dino LP, look at it. It’s your cool compass, it always points to cool. Without it you’re never lost pally!

The things in life to be thankful for? Dino said it best..
Tender kisses, nights of bliss. Small moonbeams, sips of wine. Wedding bells, little kids, and dreams to savor. Blessings, man, wife, love and life. Memories are made of this.

Be thankful for those who brought them to you. Return the favor, help make others lives more memorable.

Happy Thanksgiving Pallies!
Ed

I'm Thankful For Dean Martin

Hey pallies, likes today we continue with our accent on "Giving Dino Thanks" here at ilovedinomartin. 'gain we share with youse a post that first appeared here on November 25, 2008....and  reappears here yearly durin' our festival of "Givin' Dino Thanks." Scribed by Mr. Ron Giesecke for his "Political Therapy" blog, this  perfectly profoundly  powerful prose tagged "I’m Thankful For Dean Martin," shares the extemely important role that our Dino played in Giesecke's last conversation with his father who was dyin' of cancer.

This hugely heartfelt Dino-testimony is a remarkably  refreshin' reminder to all us pallies 'bout the many and varied ways that our Dino has deeply touched so so many lives, and continues to do so even long after his departure from the planet.

In this week of "Givin' Dino Thanks" 2014, we continue to be ever ever thankful for our Dino and likes we are also very very thankful to Mr. Ron Giesecke for his candid retellin' of the incredible role our most beloved Dino played in sayin' goodbye to his father. To view this in it's original format, likes just clicks on the tag of this Dino-message. In this season of thanksgiving, be sure to pause and give our Dino thanks for the amazin' ways he has touched the lives of all of his pallies!

I’m Thankful For Dean Martin

Tomorrow at 5:00 AM, It will be four months to the day that I lost my father to cancer. I had a feeling last Thanksgiving, that I was looking at my dad across the holiday table for the last time.

I was right.

Due to some employment constraints on my part, as well, as some plain old logistical difficulty, we decided to have Thanksgiving dinner on Monday evening. Everything was normal overall, with the addition of an emotional assent to how much we all wished dad were here one last time. My dad was a restless soul, and my wife’s observations about his absence on one of the holiday deficits that will now be the most obvious: that wherever my dad was on Thanksgiving, he always managed to be wandering around the kitchen, chatting with whomever was cooking, and just plain getting in the way in the fashion that loveable old lugs manage to do so well.

How I would have paid millions to have my dad holding up the wheels of culinary progress, forcing my wife to jokingly threaten to run him over one last time. How I would have also paid millions, if it would have at least enshrouded the incremental knots of pain in my mother’s face, as the holiday realizations washed over the clock—all without my father—her husband. And no amount of ambient room chatter was going to change it.

I started thinking about the last two days in my father’s life. Those memories—the one’s where family members became strangers, enemies, and opaque silhouettes—The one’s that recall the fear of falling, the contortions of pain—believe it or not, still have some high points.

I arrived out at the house, and to his deathbed. The medications, along with his metabolic breakdowns had cajoled an otherwise meek man into a sometimes-belligerent stranger. I remember distinctly two conversations I had with him. The first was a bit adversarial—to start.

“Dad, I’m here.”

Dad looks over at me, gives me a once over, and says “so what?”

“Dad, you’re little granddaughters are here.”

“I don’t care,” said my dad, looking away in disgust.

Right about then, my four year old—one of two apples in my father’s eye, ran into the room with that hapless, four-year-old lack of understanding at the impending gravity. I picked her up, and held her over him, so that he was forced to see her.

“Oh yeah, Captain Belligerent? Try being mean to THIS.”

I watched dad, as the realization that Clara was there at Grandpa’s side. I watched as he forced his demeanor, focus, and grandfatherly adoration through the unwieldy veil that had hidden the rest of him from the rest of us.

“Hi Clara,” he said, through the most painful smile ever forged upon that face. I will never forget that moment as long as I live. My daughter made cancer take a back seat, if only for a moment.

As dad inched ever-closer to the precipice, his coherence, ability to communicate, and humanity started to fade. I wanted to speak with my dad one last time about his soul, so that I could again pray with, for, and about him. The in-home hospice visitors said he no longer knew where he was.

I looked straight into my father’s face. His eyes fixed on mine. I thought I saw a momentary window of clarity come across those pupils, and so I silently prayed for a sign that he knew it was me.

“Dad,” I said. “I’m here.”

Dad had this way of nodding with only his eyes, and I was certain I had just seen him do it. The room was calm, and mom had kept the room calmly brimming with familiarity—to include my father’s favorite music lightly playing in the background.

“Dad, “ I said grabbing his hand. “I’m only going to ask you to extend yourself one last time. I just need to know that you know this is Ron talking. If you know it’s me, please squeeze my hand.”

He immediately squeezed with a force that astonished me.

“Okay dad. One more thing,” I said, as he locked his eyes on mine. “I’ve got one more question. After that, I just want you to pray with me in your mind.” I nodded over to the cassette player at the foot of the bed.

“Who’s playing on that radio right now?” I asked him.

With all the accompanying pain, dad struggled to put those parched lips together. I couldn’t believe he’d actually pull it off.

“Dean Martin,” he said.

I almost passed out.

I knew then, that dad and I could talk, even if it was only me doing the talking for our last conversation. Those were his last words to me. We had already exchanged our “I love you’s” earlier. And yet nothing in that transcended the sheer force I felt when I heard the man who brought me into this world fight one last time to converse with me as he left it.

You bet I am thankful. Thankful for Dean Martin.

Dean Martin's wonderful gift......

scox ... the VS Guy
Hey pallies, welcome back  to our week of "Givin" Dino Thanks" here at our humble little Dino- home.  In this week where folks in the good o' United States of America gather with family and friends to celebrate a day of Thanksgiving, it is truly truly most appropriate that ilovedinomartin share a special series of posts that speak deeply and truly of the purest of pure passion that pallies' have for our most beloved Dino.

Many many of the posts that ilovedinomartin shares in these days before our Day Of Givin' Dino Thanks, have  been shared here before, but each is so so special that we simply much post each of 'em 'gain in this season of Dino-thanks!

Here  is a post that ran  durin' Dino-amore-month 2012 and 'gain in our 2013 Week Of Givin' Dino Thanks.  Likes it's from the outstandin' blog, "Vocal Standards" hosted by Mr. Steve Cox. In his prose, "Dean Martin's wonderful gift,"  Mr. Cox shares a deeply moving, profoundly insightful testimony to the transformin' power of our most beloved Dino. Cox tells his heart-felt story of how our Dino's recorded music and television show dvds comforted his mother Bernice in the last couple of years of her struggle with Parkinson’s Disease.

This is one of the most touchin', if not the most touchin' post that we have ever shared here at ilovedinomartin about the amazin' way that our great man had, has, and will forever have of touching his great devotees' lives....and thus totally worthy of sharin' 'gain as we celebrate our week of "Givin' Dino Thanks" here at ilovedinomartin.

We 'gain offer our deep appreciation to Mr. Steve Cox for being so touchin'ly  transparent in sharin' his deeply personal testimony of the amazing ways that Dean Martin consoled Cox's mother in her last days on this earth. To read this in it's original format, simply click on the title of this post.

Dino we do indeed shares our thanks for the amazin' ways you keep transformin' the lives of those you have welcomed into your amazin'ly wonderful world! Dino-thankfully, DMP

Dean Martin’s wonderful gift…

February 5, 2012 By scox

My mom’s birthday was yesterday…
I think she would have been 85 — she passed away in 2004. I don’t want to get all maudlin here or make this too personal, but I do want to share an anecdote about how Dean Martin helped my mother in her time of greatest need.

As I mentioned in last week’s post on Andy Williams, we religiously watched Dean Martin’s television show at our house. To my knowledge, neither of my parents ever caught a Dean Martin live performance but nevertheless they were huge fans … the distant way most people are with guys as big as Dean or Frank Sinatra.

For the most part Bernice Cox lived a great life; she was a beauty queen (Miss New Hampshire!), married a dashing fighter pilot after the war (WW II), traveled, played great golf, danced … raised two amazing and talented children .

A tough ending…

Bernie had a tough go at the end with Parkinson’s Disease. Many of the things she loved to do moved from difficult to impossible in the last few years and that’s when Dean became a big part of her life.

Man, she loved to watch football on TV … college and pro football became her passion as her mobility declined. Super bowl weekend was always greeted with mixed emotions as there would be no more football ’til the fall. We got her the Dean Martin TV show collection DVDs, hoping they would provide some off-season relief and she took to them immediately.

Dean became her companion …
For the last couple of years of Bernie’s life Dean was my mom’s best friend. Not in a weird psycho way or anything, she just loved seeing and hearing the happy-go-lucky, fun loving guy Dean was … he made her feel good, remember good times dancing and carousing in better days.

At the end…

Bernie’s body finally gave out in the summer of 2004. When it was clear she wasn’t coming home from the hospital this time, all she really wanted and responded to was Dean. My brother and I got her some comfortable headphones and we loaded up all the Dean Martin LPs in my collection on an iPod for her.

After about 24 hours, I was concerned that it was too much for her, but when I lifted the headphones off and asked if she wanted some quiet to sleep … she could hardly respond but with her eyes and the tinniest shake of the head she made it clear that she wanted Dean to hold her hand all the way out.

Greg and I stood vigil for the next two nights, keeping the music playing … making sure her favorites “Go! Go! Go! Go!”, “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head’ and “Mambo Italiano” were prominently in the mix.

Dean quite literally reached down, took my mom by the hand and escorted her to a place where she can dance again … and maybe catch Dean, Frank and Sam on stage. God, let it be so.

Someday soon…
OK, I’m getting misty here and need to quit. One last thing … I plan to catch a Deana Martin show this year. When I do, I hope I have a chance to tell her how great her dad was to my mom. Bernie never met Dean and yet he helped her so much — at her time of greatest need.

Thanks for letting me drop a personal emotion bomb on you … whew, done now.

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis Thanksgiving radio show 1948

Hey pallies, likes we thoughts in this week of Giving Dino Thanks, we woulda do a bit more google searchin' usin' the tags of Dean Martin and Thanksgiving, and likes the first thin' we came 'cross was a youtube clip of our most beloved Dino and his most beloved partner Mr. Jerry Lewis doin' Elgin (watches)  "7th Annual (and last)  All-Star Thanksgiving Show on November  25, 1948.

Dino opens the show coolly croonin' "Rambling Rose" and moves into an amazin' comedy routine with Jerry that then flows into our great man and Jerry singin' "That Certain Party Of Mine" which closes out their segment.  Likes as we listen to this historic and hysterical dozen or so minutes of purely perfect Martin and Lewis it truly truly does makes us ever more grateful for our Dino's multifaceted talents as entertainer extraordinaire and for the purely powerful partnership he shared with Mr. Lewis for a full decade.

In this special week of Giving Dino Thanks, we are delighted to have been able to locate and share these golden moments of Dino-delight from Thanksgiving 1948.  Dino-thankfully, DMP

TV Guide Magazine: What's the drunkest you've been while hosting?

Cohen: That was very early on when we were on once a week at midnight on Thursday nights. I thought it was incredible that I could drink on the show. I would really slam them back and they would bring me a new drink during commercial break. I thought I was Dean Martin. I really should take a look at what I looked like. But the early days I did used to get hammered.

Johnny Depp, Hollywood Film Awards (CBS)

Johnny Depp is getting knocked around for appearing drunk on stage at the CBS broadcast, Hollywood Film Awards. Depp was chosen to honor Hollywood agent Shep Gordon, the subject of Mike Myers’ new documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. Gordon was the agent for Alice Cooper and Blondie, among other musicians.

Depp stumbled with the microphone stand (which was enormous, in his defense), kept his head low and mumbled about “not being very good at these things.” His performance, whether he was really drunk or just pretending, reminded us of the late great Dean Martin, an actor who capitalized on his laid-back persona and making snappy if slurred remarks about fellow celebrities during his roasts.

This is great great news pallies 'cause somewhat long time 'go the Paramount sets of the Dino and Jerry flicks went outta print and if they coulda be found they were sellin' for sky high prices.  'gain likes with the Paramount releases, Warner Archives is releasin' two volumes.  As you will note below, volume one will feature the first eight of the films.  Volume two contains 5 of the later releases.  The titles contained in each set is listed below.  As in the past releases, the sets will not contain "At War With The Army," "Money From Home,"  and "Three Ring Circus."  While the first two are available separately, as well as we know "Three Ring Circus" has never been released on DVD.

Reel to real Special for Modern Times Magazine

Nov. 17, 2014 — Long before their legendary and acrimonious split, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were paired together as one of the greatest comedy duos ever to tear up nightclubs – and then Hollywood.

In the years just after World War II and before television became a staple in homes all over America, Martin and Lewis’s unique brand of anarchic slapstick (what they could do with a seltzer bottle would make your head swim … usually in seltzer!), heckling and verbal jousting reduced audiences to uncontrollable fits of laughter.

Although the sheer pandemonium the duo incited in nightclubs was never and probably couldn’t ever be duplicated on the big screen, the chemistry Martin and Lewis shared as a team can be glimpsed in many of their films – especially the early movies they made under the auspices of producer Hal Wallis at Paramount Pictures.

This week, Warner Archive is releasing two volumes of Martin & Lewis’s classic Paramount comedies. The Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis Collection, Volume One includes their first film, 1949's My Friend Irma, as well as 1950’s My Friend Irma Goes West; 1951's That My Boy" 1952's Sailor Beware, Jumping Jacks and The Stooge; and 1953's Scared Stiff and The Caddy.

The second volume includes 1954's Living It Up; 1955's You're Never Too Young and Artists and Models; and 1956's Pardners and Hollywood or Bust.

Movie Review: Who Was That Lady? (1960)

Future spy guys Tony Curtis and Dean Martin teamed up for a black and white spy comedy before the Bond boom: 1960's Who Was That Lady? Who Was That Lady? is incredibly dated for a number of reasons, the biggest coming at the very beginning and the very end. The whole plot is set into motion during the opening credits when wife Janet Leigh walks in on husband Tony Curtis in his university science lab kissing a female student. Needless to say, she’s not happy. In fact, she declares there and then that she’s going to divorce him, and storms out. What she failed to take into account, however, was that this is 1960 and Tony was only cheating on her in the completely acceptable way that all husbands cheat on their wives! So Tony turns to his TV writer friend Dean Martin and explains it to him. Of course Dino accepts that the problem is with Janet, and not Tony. How can a wife be so shrewish as to take umbrage at being cheated on? So can Dino use his screenwriting skills to help Tony out of this one?

All it takes is chemist Tony whipping up a batch of homemade hooch in his lab to convince his pal to help out, and Dino concocts a plot wherein Tony is an undercover FBI agent, and what Janet saw was merely him doing what he had to for the good of his assignment. Even Tony’s not buying this one at first, but then Dino shows off an old fraternity tattoo and does some hardboiled doublespeak and suddenly convinces Tony that he’s an FBI man! Of course he’s not; he was merely demonstrating that it only takes a few props and lies to make someone believe that. It will work on his wife. Just to make sure, the pair of them swing by CBS on their way home so Dino can pick up some props from his place of work: a dummy gun and a fake FBI identification card for his buddy.

Sure enough, after some protestations on the wife's part and some wild finagling on Dino’s part, the two guys succeed in making Janet believe that they both work for the FBI. She feels awful that she ever doubted her hero husband, and naturally calls off her plans for divorce. Unfortunately, the prop man has reported the fake FBI card to the real Feds, as any good citizen would have done in the days of J. Edgar Hoover. And the Feds take interest in the situation, sending a man round Tony’s apartment to find out what’s going on.

Needless to say, this leads to hijinks. From here on in, the movie is a succession of farcical setpieces–usually lengthy scenes in single locations, betraying the story's stage play origins. Realizing that her husband’s forgotten his "gun," Janet takes the real FBI man (James Whitmore, who’s swung by to discourage Tony from impersonating a Fed) down to the Chinese restaurant where Tony and Dino are on a "mission" to entertain two buxom blond "enemy agents." The Fed has no idea what she’s talking about as she excitedly relays all the lies she’s been fed: the proprietor is a Chinese Nationalist–Madame Chiang Kai-shek’s uncle, in fact, the showgirls are Russian spies, at a certain moment the two men will head for the men’s room to confer, etc. After too lengthy a build-up, all the mistaken identities culminate in a shooting that garners national media attention–and, consequently, the attention of real Russian spies, as well as the CIA. Now everyone’s after Tony, Dino and Janet.

Things build to a climax in the Empire State Building that result in a humorous closing shot of smoke pouring from the top of this New York City landmark thanks to the characters’ comedic capering. Of course the filmmakers then couldn’t have possibly predicted the horrific associations that imagery would generate decades later, but this one is undeniably another moment you sure wouldn’t find in a film today! It’s also a pretty fitting way to close the occasionally enjoyable but utterly slight time capsule that is Who Was That Lady?, a product of its era that fails to transcend it like the early Bonds or epitomize it like Modesty Blaise. Fortunately Curtis (The Persuaders!), Martin (Matt Helm) and Leigh (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.)–all talented performers in their own rights–would each go on to better spy roles later. Oh, and, yes, Leigh does find out the truth, eventually, but learns to be more tolerant of her husband’s philandering ways, while he learns that jealousy is an admirable trait in a wife. That’s the moral.

Ed's Epistle: "Remembering A Man and His Son"

Hey pallies, likes we were checkin' back on previous posts honorin' the date of our most beloved Dino's most beloved boypallie Dino Jr. entry into the world when we happened 'pon these wonderfully wise words put to paper by our great great pallie Ed, the bestest of best ever scriber of Dino-prose back on November 17, 2010.  We simply must shared Ed's reflections 'gain with youse this very Dino-day 'cause they are the purest of pure poetry in honor of our Dino and his namesake boypallie.

Thanks Ed for your heartfelt homage of Dino and Dino Jr., givin' both our Dino and Dino Jr. their rightful due.  In deep deep Dino-gratitude, DMP

Ed's Epistle......Ramblin's and Ruminations of a Disciple of Dino

"Remembering A Man and His Son"

”For rarely are sons similar to their fathers: most are worse, and a few are better than their fathers.” Homer

In the animal kingdom, the offspring of an eagle, is an eagle. In the entertainment kingdom, offspring of star is often a victim of circumstance. Rarely do the sons and daughters live up to the lofty accomplishments of their famous parents. Unfair and unsolicited comparisons is the nature of the inherited business.

Dean Paul Martin Jr., born November 17th 1951 to Dean and Jeanne Martin. The proudest family jewel in Dean Martin’s “King of Cool” crown. Common Hollywood bloodlines, unlike Royal Bloodlines, typically bestow nothing more than a surname. Or, in the case of Dino Martin Jr., a cognomen, a surname, and a suffix. Rare is the child who can take the burden of his father’s name, his famous father’s name, and further enrich it.

“When a father gives to his son, both laugh; when a son gives to his father, both cry.” Proverb

Dino Jr., accomplished tennis player, Golden Globe nominated actor, singer, and military pilot. Handsome man once married to actress Olivia Hussey, and later to Olympic Gold Medalist Dorothy Hamill. To suggest Dino Jr. failed to enrich his bloodline would be an offense. Dino Jr. seized the spirit of Dean, added some drums, took to athletic competition, jumped on a motorcycle, and boarded a jet fighter! Dino Jr. wasn’t one to sit idle at the feet of his father, The Idol.

Dean Paul Martin Jr. accomplished what few celebrity children could. Almost in a rebellious fashion, Dino Jr. thrust upon the scene his own man. Outside of his first stint at singing and playing guitar in the teen group Dino, Desi, & Billy, Dino Jr. pretty much shied away from the music scene. Tennis was his new challenge. Motorcycles were his hobby.

When daddy-o Dino sauntered, Dino Jr. sprinted. When daddy-o Dino crooned, Dino Jr. careened. Whether the Dino gene drove him to be his own man, or follow in his father’s famous footsteps, we’ll never know.

“To a father, when a child dies, the future dies; to a child when a parent dies, the past dies.” Red Auerbach

San Gorgonio Mountain, aka Old Greyback. At 11,503 ft. it’s the highest point in Southern California. Old Greyback, hiding like a coward in a snowstorm, took the soul of Dino Jr. when his National Guard F-4 Phantom fighter jet plunged mountainside.

In celebration of the pride and joy of a great man.

On This Day In Dino-history: November 17, 1951

Hey pallies, likes today is one of the happiest of happy days...indeed, if not the happiest day in all of Dino-history 'cause 63 years ago this very day, on November 17, 1951, our most beloved Dino's most beloved boypallie, Dino Martin Jr. was born to proud daddy-o Dino and mother Jeanne.   Likes thinks of the powerful pride our powerful Dino had in namin' his first child by Jeanne after himself. Likes thinks of the hopes, the dreams our great man had for his little boypallie by givin' his new son his gloriously great name!

And, indeed our Dino's boypallie namesake certainly did live up to the takin' of his amazin' Daddy-o's tag...becomin' a hugely successful entertainer himself while just in his teens as part of the swingin' pop trio Dino, Desi, and Billy.

Dino Jr. went on to acclaim as a tennis pro and football player, and found fame and fortune as an actor on both the small and big screens. And our Dino's golden boy also was gloriously  golden when it came to bein' a pilot of jet airplanes.

Likes Dino Jr. had only one real pressin' problemo...he was so marvelously multi-talented likes his famous father, that he just couldn't decide which of his many interests to put the major accent of his life on.

One thin' for sure pallies, Dino Jr. was definitely   heir apparent to the Dino-throne. And, of course all of that came to a crashin' end when Dino Jr. tragically crashed his National Guard F-4 Phantom fighter jet in California's San Bernardino Mountains during a snowstorm on March 21, 1987.

Today we celebrate this happiest of happy days in our Dino's life as we remember and honor Dino Jr. on the 63th anniversary of his entry into family Martin. But, in the midst of our celebratin' we can't help but be so so sad as well as we know that the Dino Jr. story turned out to break our lovin' Dino's lovin' heart as he never ever got over the death of his beloved namesake.
