Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra 1970
The Rat Pack was a group of actors originally centered on their leader, Humphrey Bogart. In the mid-1960s it was the name used by the press and the general public to refer to a later variation of the group, after Bogart's death in 1957, that called itself "the Summit" or "the Clan," featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop; they appeared together on stage and in films in the early 1960s, including the movies Ocean's 11, Sergeants 3, and Robin and the 7 Hoods (in the last film, Bing Crosby replaced Lawford). Sinatra, Martin, and Davis were regarded as the group's lead members.
GREAT pics Scott! If I had to guess...I'd say that's ol' Ronny Reagan standin' next to Dean. Musta been a po li ti cal shin-dig! Haha!!
ReplyDeleteI am always amazed at how much both Dean & Frank changed after the 1967 Christmas show. A scant 3 years later they both looked 10 years older. Frank looked okay here but that really is a bad rug he's wearing. As years went on Frank grew into his older looks and looked much better than he does here. Later on he had Barbara for 20 some odd years to take care of him and make sure he took care of himself. Dean had left Jeanne by this time and according to Lee Hale in his book Backstage At The Dean Martin Show that was the begining of a long slow decline for Dean. Dean is still a good lookin' fella here but not the good lookin' young buck of the 1967 Christmas Show even though he was 50 years old at that point. He was certainly heavier here and he had somewhat stopped coloring his hair....although we hadn't hit the bad dye job with the blonde streaks he would sport on the tv show for a few episodes. I've also read that Dean took the painkiller percocet for his bad back at this point because of years of pratfalls that had taken their toll on his back. Meds like this tend to "age" people a little bit and Dean took it for years. Now Doctors don't like to prescribe it and if they do they want you off of it asap!!
ReplyDeleteEven Jerry Lewis said in his book Dean And Me(A Love Story)that he thought Dean really didn't age well after seeing him in a restraunt one night.
Old man time is comes for all of us even The King Of Cool and The Chairman Of The Board.
Hey pallie, likes thanks for the patter DeansPalley. Accordin' to Dino's biographer Mr. Nick Tosches, the pain killer was percodan, but we ain't sure what the diff is between that and percocet. Also the prescriber of the meds was a Hollywood dentist. Dino's really didn't age so so much 'til after the tragic death of his beloved boypallie namesake Dino Martin Jr....at least to our way of thinkin'. Keeps lovin' our most beloved Dino!
