.....the most ridiculously awesome spy movie series of the 60s: The Matt Helm movies starring Dean Martin.

Hey pallies, likes are all us Dino-holics in for some beau-ti-ful blasts from the past dudes.  Likes recently we swankly stumbled  back 'pon a stellar series of remarkable reviews on the quintessential quartet of Matt Helm Dino-flicks that were  powerfully posted a delightful decade 'go in April in the year of our Dino 2008. While we greatly grooved on these Dino-discussions when they first appeared at the potent pad of the happenin' blog tagged "DR. K'S 100 SUPER SPECTACULAR PAGES 100" and even pattered on 'em at the time, in lookin' back at Dino-grams here, we discovered that we never ever shared 'em with all youse Dino-holics....so we are goin' to bring 'em to the light of Dino-day here at our humble little Dino-blog....better late then never!

Dr. K is a professor  whose bio tells us that he is "an English professor at a small university in South Carolina, where I teach courses in British literature, film, and detective fiction. I blog about comics, movies, and other pop culture topics. And I like everything that you like."  Likes we loved then, and loves even more now that someone as learned as Dr. K has used his terrific talents to hugely hugely homage of most beloved Dino as swingin' spyster Mr. Matt Helm.

Likes 'cause these ravin' reviews are a decade old, be aware that some of the youtube vid clips shared originally are no longer up at youtube, but Dr. K's potent prose is  as absolutely awesome in deepest of deep delight in our Dino as when first wisely written in April 2008.  Today's first entry is a primo prelude for what is to come as Dr. Kunka has tagged it, "Coming Soon! Matt Helm Week!"  We gotta say that we still concur with Prof K'sDino-observation that "However, I always felt that one of Dean's many talents--and perhaps his most endearing one--was that he never seemed to work harder than he had to."

It's a incredible introduction to the Helms dudes....and, likes of course, Prof K includes that inspirational image of our Dino as Helm sweetly surrounded by a bevy of beauties on his randy round bed!  So let's the Dino-festivities begin!  Hats off to our wisest of wise Dino-holic Dr. K, with our absolute apologies for bein' so so late in sharin' his wonderful work with Dino-devotees every Dino-where!

Yours in Dino,

Coming Soon! Matt Helm Week!

This week on the Spec, I'll be posting a series of entries on the most ridiculously awesome spy movie series of the 60s: The Matt Helm movies starring Dean Martin.

The four films--The SilencersMurderers' RowThe Ambushers, and The Wrecking Crew--were released over the course of three years (1967-69) during the height of the James Bond craze. While they lack much of the quality that many spy movies of the period had, they make up for that by being contagiously fun. Dean Martin functions here in the mode that he followed for his tv series: he clearly isn't trying very hard, and most of the time he's reading his lines off of cue cards, but his personality carries him a long way. And the films do a great job of playing off the hard-partying persona he developed during this period of his career.

In fact, a lot of Dean Martin purists dislike these movies because he seems to be wasting his talents. However, I always felt that one of Dean's many talents--and perhaps his most endearing one--was that he never seemed to work harder than he had to. So, while he certainly could act, as he proved in The Young LionsSome Came RunningRio Bravo, and elsewhere, his talents were such that he could easily coast on his personality alone. Plus, he gets to sing a lot in these movies.

The movies also benefit from having some incredible leading ladies, including Ann-Margret, Sharon Tate, Stella Stevens, Janice Rule, Senta Berger, Camilla Sparv, Elke Sommer, and Daliah Lavi.

Here's the great opening sequence from the first Matt Helm movie, The Silencers. The music is by Elmer Bernstein, who may be slumming a bit here. Cyd Charisse performs the theme song:

This sequence captures the feeling of unbridled hedonism that these movies all celebrate. When the stripper opens her top to reveal the film's title, you know exactly what you're going to get.

And the line, "And she's 38 where it is great to measure 38"--I really don't know what to say about that, except it makes me happy.

The opening credit sequence for the second film, Murderers' Row, features music by Lalo Schifrin. The music may be better here, but the sequence contains less stripping. The design resembles a more generic 60s spy movie style than the earlier movie does, too.
So, tomorrow we'll start Matt Helm Week off with The Silencers.

Danny G's Sunday Serenade with Dino: "I Wish You Love"

"I wish you bluebirds in the Spring, to give your heart a song to sing."
Man...that says it ALL, pals.

Dino wishin' us somethin' as BEA U TI FUL as that REALLY says a lot to me.

It's one of the simplest thoughts in the world...peaceful...tranquil even!

 But, man o man...it's great!

It tells us that the smallest thins' in this world can be the BIGGEST treasures!

Dosen't need to come from a fancy store or a sparklin' showroom.

It comes from the simple lyrics from a Dino-jam that swoons us into a light & easy vibe.

It comes from our heart & soul, my friends.

Some of the GREATEST joys in my life & MOSTEST specialist moments have been quiet & calm.

No fantastico party...no over-the-top celebration...just a sunny day with a special friend or a relaxin' night with some Dino & vino flowin'!

That's the good stuff, pallies.

So for the last Serenade of this WON DER FUL month...as we say "So-long" to April 2018...let's keep those "easy, breazy days" in mind.

Their what REALLY matter, mi amici.

"I Wish You Love" is EXACTLY the way I want to slide into May!

Laid back & chillin'...& DEF IN ATE LY  O so cool!
Haha!!

Yes, pals o mine...let Dean's soothin' voice guide youse to serenity!
Ha!

Enjoy, mi amici!

I wish you bluebirds in the spring
To give your heart a song to sing
And then a kiss
But more than this
I wish you love
And in July a lemonade
To cool you in some leafy glade
I wish you health
And more than wealth
I wish you love
My breakin' heart and I agree
That you and I could never be
So with my best, my very best
I set you free
I wish you shelter from the storm
A cozy fire to keep you warm
But most of all
When snowflakes fall
I wish you love
I wish you shelter from the storm
A cozy fire to keep you warm
But most of all
When snowflakes fall
I wish you love

Dean Martin

Sänger, Schauspieler, Lebemann: Dean Martin

Singer, actor, bon vivant: Dean Martin

Dino Paul Crocetti

Born: 07.06.1917 in Steubenville, Ohio, USA

Star sign Gemini

Died: 25.12.1995 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA

In Atlantic City - in addition to Las Vegas the daddy of adventurers and players - in 1946 begins the rise of the small nightclub singer Dino Crocetti, who later calls himself Dean Martin. The son of a Jewish hairdresser, after elementary school, works as a boxer, croupier, factory worker and gas station attendant to earn money for his career. The boy dreams of becoming a star singer in New York and Las Vegas - and today many of his songs are evergreens.

On his way to the top he successfully imitates Bing Crosby. Then in 1946 he meets the comedian Jerry Lewis and together with him the stars twinkle: As a duo, Lewis & Martin are the nation's hit for the next few years, as in films like "The Terror of the Division", "The Prügelknabe" (both 1952 ) and "The Dork" (1953). The two are the little jerk with the quack voice, the lumbering gait and the shrill grimaces, and the womanizer and singer who fools the dumbass at his side, makes him small, but basically takes pity on him again and again. Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin are so convincing that they even regret Dean Martin outside the studio, that he has to deal with such a stupid Ulknudel.

It takes a long time for both to realize that the common path has no future. They have exhausted all the cards and can only repeat themselves. The noise that is attributed to them comes largely from the pen of gossip columnists and the chroniclers have taken him - for the sake of simplicity. In any case, Jerry Lewis, who does not suffer from feelings of inferiority, has always said that the time spent together was also important to him and his career. He paid tribute to his colleague when, very late, he found his new ego. Shortly after the break Dean Martin had his own telephoto show, he sang and appeared in numerous shows, the trick of which was that he often took himself on the shovel. But also the actor Dean Martin made speeches.

The actor Dean Martin is discovered

It was in 1959 when Howard Hawks cast Dean Martin in "Rio Bravo" as a partner of John Wayne. Nobody understood that then, everyone wanted to talk Hawks out of that. But in the deputy sheriff Dude, who causes his boss chance with the constant Suffkopf all sorts of trouble, one recognizes the talented actor Dean Martin for the first time. And when, five years later, Billy Wilder cast him in "Kiss Me, Fool" (1964), Hollywood has recognized that "Rio Bravo" was no exception and what opportunities are in Dean Martin.

And another movie showed a very big artist: Vincente Minnelli's "Damn them all" (1958). Unfortunately, the actor was personally in very bad shape at that time, he drank, was unreliable, and even his prominent friends Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Shirley MacLaine, who, like him, rat pack, rat pack could not bail him out.

Although his success as a show star on television shows did not cease and he remained one of the wealthiest actors and singers, but in the movies you only occasionally saw him in average roles. In the seventies it finally became quieter around Dean Martin. He was occasionally seen in shows, on television, and a few cinematic roles, but luck and career were over. His death at the age of 78 years was the end of a long dying.

Other films with Dean Martin: "Irma in the Golden West", "Crash with the Company" (both 1950), "sailor, watch out!" (1951), "The daring Jockey", "Starr with fear" (both 1953), "In the circus of the three manees", "Patient with roof damage" (both 1954), "The Agentschreck", "The Gangsterschreck" (both 1955 ), "Everything about Anita", "Where Men Are Still Men" (both 1956), "10 000 Bedrooms", "The Young Lions" (both 1957), "Just Call - Come Into the House", "Who Was The Lady ? " (both 1959), "Frankie and his cronies" (1960), The Road to Hong Kong, "Woman with the Past" (both 1961), "Always for Your Own", "Dolls Under the Roof" (both 1962), "Seven Against Chicago "," Four for Texas "," Who slept in my bed? "(All 1963)," Always with another "(1964)," Four sons of Katie Elder "," Three times to Mexico "," Quiet Whisper the Pistols "(both 1965)," When Jim Dolan Came, "" The Murderers Queue, "" Two Great Guys in Texas "(all 1966)," Tenderly Takes the Trap, "" Bandolero, "" When Killer lying in wait "(all 1967)," Rollkommando "," mortal enemies "(both 1968)," Airport "(1969)," El Capitano "(1971)

Dean Martin

Dino Paul Crocetti
Geboren: 07.06.1917 in Steubenville, Ohio, USA
Sternzeichen: Zwillinge
Gestorben: 25.12.1995 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Kalifornien, USA

Tony Soprano references abound.

But it’s not just the iconic mobster that the Grayslake sandwich shop is named for. Nor the Rat Pack photo autographed by Dean Martin, owner Greg Moore’s prized possession. Or “Godfather” and “GoodFellas” posters.

Yes, it's the name of the strip club in “The Sopranos,” but this Ba Da Bing owner says the name is “like ‘yay,’ just like a fun, long word” that he grew up saying in a Sicilian household in Chicago.

Moore said he migrated north because there was no good beef in the area. “We have a small menu and we make our beef in-house, our meatballs in house. People say our beef is the best. It’s the homemade way. It’s cooked in the gravy. Gravy is a beautiful thing. The beef and sausage combo is my favorite.”

That would be The Godfather sandwich. It’s joined on the menu along with sandwiches like The Ba Da Bing, Italian beef; The Dean Martin, Italian sausage; The Joey Zasa, meatball; Joey Da Whale, Italian-style Maxwell Street Polish; and Mona Lisa, chicken parmesan with cheese and marinara. And a special that’s not on the menu, The Ultimate Mob Sandwich, or prime ribeye.

Moore said he was at the deli he used to own in Libertyville when he came up the with the Ba Da Bing Beef Co.’s sandwich names. “They were fancy names of people who influenced my life growing up in an Italian neighborhood in Chicago. You know, GoodFellas, Tony Soprano.”

All the fries are hand cut daily. Moore even jars and sells his own giardiniera peppers. “We’ve sold 10,000 jars since we opened,” he said of the mild, hot and Devil’s Brew varieties.

And Moore doesn’t serve just dry, wet or dipped Italian beef: “We call dipped ‘cement shoes.’”

Onion rings are one of the sides served up at Ba Da Bing Beef Co. in Grayslake. (Shonda Talerico Dudlicek/News-Sun)
On the menu: Italian beef and other sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, fresh-cut fries.

About the owners: Moore opened Ba Da Bing Beef Co. three years ago. Previously he owned a Sal’s Deli in Libertyville and a bar in Chicago and even worked as an executive chef at a national chain of day care facilities. He didn’t make just macaroni and cheese and chicken nuggets, though. “The food was very high quality,” he said of Bright Horizons.

Philosophy: “Where we always make it a’nice” is everywhere, on the sign outside, on the welcome mat, on the menu. “Keep it a simple place, keep the freshness. We always make it a’nice, we put a lot of love into it,” Moore said.

Decor: “It’s a shack inside a shack, it’s so small,” Moore said. “We have seating for eight inside and up to 40 outside.”

Price range: Sandwiches from $5.25-$8.95. Burgers and hot dogs from $2.50-$6.50. Chicken tenders and shrimp are $5.75 and $7.95. Chili for $3.25. Sides from $1.95-$3.95. Beef by the pound for $12.50. Loaves of Italian bread for $4. Party specials and catering.

Logistics: Ba Da Brew Beef Co. 99 S. Route 45, Grayslake. Hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, closed Sundays in the winter and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays starting April 29. Jimmie Tramel: Bruce Lee? Steve McQueen? Snakes? Sink your teeth into for-real Chuck Norris Facts

By Jimmie Tramel Tulsa World  Apr 23, 2018

• A Norris kick once caused Dean Martin to go airborne.

Once upon a time, Norris and Bruce Lee were workout partners. Lee was the stunt coordinator for “The Wrecking Crew,” a 1968 movie starring Martin as agent Matt Helm. Lee told Norris there was a “perfect role” for him in a fight scene.

The scene called for Norris to fight Martin. Norris intended to throw a high, spinning kick over the star’s head. Martin failed to duck.

“I kicked Dean in the shoulder, sending him flying across the room,” Norris said, adding that he ran over to see if Martin was hurt.

Smiling, Martin said he was fine. The next time the sequence was shot, Martin did what he was supposed to do.

Danny G 's Sunday Serenade with Dino: "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"

Hey there, mi amici!
How's my bros & gals of Dino?
How's your weather?
Warm? Chilly? Sunny? Drizzly? All of the above?! Haha!
Yea...here too, pals
Oh well...that's April for ya'.
But guess what? I ain't complainin'!
Nope!
Not this fella!
No way!
Not me!
Well...maybe I moan a wee bit. Hahaha!!!

Oh well, that's OK. It's only normal to feel a little down when the clouds just won't go away, pals.

But...don't youse worry, my friends! Dean is here & it don't matter WHAT it's like outside...he's gonna croon a tune that will AB SO LUTE LY gets us in a bright & sunny kinda mood!

What's a little rain anyway?
No big deal, Ol pallies o mine.

Just do what I do, when the gray gray skies gots me in a gray gray mood...pour a little drink & throw on a little Dino!

Yes sir!
It's as simple as that, pals!

I thinks today's Serenade will help to lift those rainy day blues away.

"Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" seems to fit just right for these early Spring days!

Ain't worth feelin sad, pallies.
Can't change the weather.
What we CAN change is how we deal with it!

Follow Dean's lead...keep your head up!

Take the cloudy days with the sunny ones.

Like the song say's..."Cryin's not for me...'cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'...because I'm free...nothin's worryin' me"!

Ha!

Don't youse just love it?!

So So Dino!

Soak it in, my friends!

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
Just like a guy who's feet are too big for his bed
Nothing seems to fit, those raindrops are fallin' on my head they keep fallin'
So I just did me some talkin' to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleepin' on the job, oh raindrops are fallin' on my head they keep fallin'
But there's one thing I know, the blues they send to meet me
Won't defeat me, it won't be long 'til happiness steps up to greet me
Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me, 'cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free nothing's worryin' me
(It won't be long 'til happiness steps up to greet me)
Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me, oh I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free nothin's worryin' me
