Before the days of omnipresent paparazzi and constantly updated social media accounts, audiences relied on professional photographers to serve as a window into a performer's personal life. One of the photographers who parted those gilded curtains was Sid Avery. He photographed just about every industry icon of note, including Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, James Dean, and more over the course of his career. He was known especially for capturing stars in a relaxed, off-duty state.
“The one thing that Sid Avery had with all of his subjects is that he just let them be,” Morrison Hotel Gallery director Aaron Zych tells Vanity Fair. “He was a fly on the wall in those respects.”
From Oct. 21 to Nov. 6, the New York-based gallery will host an exhibit of Avery's work. There are photographs of Elizabeth Taylor sunning herself on a movie set; Audrey Hepburn riding a bike through the Paramount lot; Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall relaxing with their son Stephen at home. “You really are getting that iconic time period of Hollywood,” Zych says.
Below are exclusive photo strips of some of Avery's famous images, showing Dean Martin. They picture the candid moments before and after he manages to snap now-classic photos: Martin raising his hands in the air, never-before-seen moments that really capture the magic of old Hollywood.

ReplyDeleteHow great is this DMP to actually see the other images that went along with this famous one. I for one am always glad to find info along with a picture that gives at least a little background on it. There is nothing worse then finding a great moment captured and you are left with nothing more at all, no when, where or who. Thank you DMP for this great post.
