As the post shares, this Dino-croon, "It's 1200 Miles From Palm Springs," was recorded by our Dino in 1958 to promote the annual Palm Springs "Desert Circus," whose theme in '58 was Texas. Dean Martin Sings About Palm Springs
Back in 1958, former Palm Springs resident, Dean Martin recorded this promotional 45 record, which was never commercially released. I just stumbled upon it on Youtube the other day.
The title of the single is “It’s 1,200 Miles From Palm Springs to Texas.” The song was used to promote the Palm Springs “Desert Circus,” which began in 1937. It was an annual week-long event in April, with a different theme each year. In 1958, the theme was “Texas.”
A number of well known songs have been written and recorded here, by some of the biggest entertainers on the planet, but this is the first song I’ve ever heard about Palm Springs. It’s a start, but I’m still waiting for our “New York, New York,” “Chicago,” or “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” sized hit song. What do you think, Barry Manilow?
