Dean Martin As Matt Helm In The Ambushers
It's time for another review of one of the Matt Helm spy spoofs. I've purposely been delaying posting this particular review. I'll honestly admit that I'm not a big fan of this particular film. The Ambushers, released in 1967, is the third and weakest movie in the Matt Helm spy franchise. It follows two really cool movies The Silencers and Murderers' Row, both which hits theaters in 1966. The Wrecking Crew, which was released in 1968, would the last of the Matt Helm spy capers. I always felt like it rebounded the franchise and sent it out on a high note.
Dean Martin once again returns as Matt Helm. Beverly Adams (as Helm's sexy personal assistant Lovey Kravazit) and James Gregory (as Helm's ICE boss MacDonald) are back for a final time. Neither of them play in The Wrecking Crew. Lovey is nowhere to be seen, while Mac is played by John Larch. Henry Levin, the director of Murderers' Row, was again behind the camera on The Ambushers. The screenplay was written by Herbert Baker, who had also worked on Murderers' Row. While I enjoyed what Levin and Baker did on that film, I'm not sure exactly what happened here.
Uncle Sam has manufactured an experimental flying saucer as the latest weapon in its vast arsenal. ICE is supervising the security of the flying saucer. Sheila Summers (played by Janice Rule) is the ICE agent who is piloting the spacecraft. It seems that the saucer has a unique quality about it. The electro magnetic field produced by it is deadly to men. It must be flown by only the female of the species. The flying saucer is hijacked in Mexico where Sheila is captured and assaulted.
When we first see Matt Helm, he is at ICE's training center to brush up on his skills and help in the instruction of newer agents. It seems that all these agents in training are gorgeous young women. They are known as Slaygirls. The scenes at the center are actually some of my favorite of the movie. Matt is definitely in paradise here with all these hot babes.
He encounters a crazed white-haired and pale woman who refuses to have anything to do with men. He discovers that this is Sheila. They go way back. It seems that they had once worked on a mission together. When some bad guys make an attempt on her life, Matt rushes to the rescue. Sheila comes out of her catatonic condition, but she nows believe that she is the wife of Matt Helm. Their cover on a previous mission had been as a married couple. Sheila begans to remember a jingle for a beer company in Mexico. They believe it might be a link to what happened to her and the missing saucer. She tags along with Matt on his mission to Acapulco. Matt's cover will be that he's going to do a photo shoot on the brewery.
There Matt and Sheila meet up with Quintana (played by Kurt Kasznar) who runs the brewery. Quintana is a top henchman for Leopold Caselius aka Jose Ortega (Albert Salmi), the exiled ruler of a rogue nation. I don't want to give too much away, but it's not long before Matt and Sheila are fighting for their lives. They not only face Ortega and his men, but also other baddies who have come to Mexico. It seems that Ortega plans to sell the saucer to the highest bidder. Those seeking to buy the craft include Francesca Madeiros (played by Senta Berger), the best pilot employed by Big O, and a Middle Eastern assassin named Nassim.
Senta Berger, one of my favorite female stars of the 60's and 70's, is not featured enough in this film. Her part as Francesca is way too small. She's one of the major highlights of this film for me. It's just that we don't get a chance to see enough of her. I love anytime she is on the screen. She has great chemistry with Dino in this movie. One of my favorite scenes is when she plays a seductive game with Matt Helm. I won't tell you exactly what happens there.
I have nothing against Janice Rule. I think she's a fine actress. I just think she was wrong for a Matt Helm spy spoof. She seems so out of place here. She's very different than the usual type of actresses that have played in these movies. There's something really missing in the movie. Another actress might have been better suited in this role. She just doesn't have the electricity that Stella Stevens or Ann-Margret had in their roles in the previous two films.
I'm also not a big fan of the main villain in this film. Albert Salmi as Ortega just doesn't intrigue me the way the madman of a spy movie should. He's my least favorite villain of the four films in the Matt Helm franchise. He is too sinister. He doesn't have that wicked sense of humor that the other villains tended to have. I actually much prefer his henchman Quintana (Kurt Kasznar), who really hams it up and chews the scenery so well. There is a really hilarious shoot-out between him and Matt Helm at the beer factory. Just imagine the boozy Dino and lots of beer. You should get the picture.
The special effects in the Matt Helm franchise do tend to be pretty standard for the era. I would have hoped that they might have been a little better this time around since the film has such a science fiction quality to it. Gadgets used by the various characters in this film include a bullet shooting bra, a device that makes men's pants fall down, a weapon that doesn't do much more than make drinks, cigarettes that emit laughing gas, lipstick laced with drugs, etc. Matt Helm even has in his truck a portable bachelor bad. This thing has to be seen to be believed. It's always funny to see what sort of cheesy gadgets will be used in each film.
The musical scores for the first two films were done by Elmer Bernstein and Lalo Schifrin. This time Hugo Montenegro was the man in charge of the music. I'm a huge fan of his style of music. His lounge score is really groovy and catchy. It infects the movie with such a cool and hip vibe. The intro sequence to The Ambushers features a theme song by Boyce and Hart which considers women to be the real "ambushers."
There is definitely lots of eye candy on display throughout the film. Besides the gorgeous and luscious Senta Berger, there are the female ICE agents at the beginning and end of the film, as well as some models at a fashion show down in Mexico. This film doesn't disappoint in that department. There is also a very hot (no pun intended) scene of Matt and his assistant Lovey in a steambath at the start of the film.
I hope I haven't been too hard on this film. I do want you to see if if you haven't. The Matt Helm movies are not high art. They never pretend to be. They are just good campy escapist fun. That's how they should be enjoyed. I do think that this one was a little substandard to the other three. There are still plenty of things I liked in this movie. I'm glad I saw it. I do believe that are things that could have been improved on. These four films are all available in the Matt Helm Lounge DVD set. It's not like you have to buy it separately. You get all four spy flicks together. I hope you'll give it a chance if you haven't seen it. Cheers!

Everybody Loves Somebody on Valentine's Day and Everybody Loves Dean Martin's LOVE SONGS Every Day of the Year
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Valentine's Day without Dean Martin is like Christmas without Santa Claus -- both deliver the goods. There is "cool" and then there is Dino, the King of Cool. Now, just in time for Valentine's Day, Dean Martin - Love Songs (Hip-O/UMe), released January 13, 2009, brings together 14 of his most heartwarming performances, from his best known signature tune, "Everybody Loves Somebody," to his forever hopeful "Somewhere There's A Someone." A handful of these recordings have rarely been available on CD, and now they're in one place.
As the man who once knocked the Beatles out of the No. 1 spot on the charts, Dino has remained an icon and a timeless singer whose vocal style has defined smooth, suave and seductive, while being rediscovered by new generations. Coincidentally, a pair of Martin's albums was recently on the Top 40 charts. The George Clooney-Brad Pitt Ocean's Eleven series of hit movies, a continuing fascination with the Rat Pack, Comedy Central's reruns of Martin's classic "Celebrity Roast" specials, and lounge music revivals have helped fuel a never-ending interest in one of the most popular entertainers in history.
Martin's music career boasted more than 30 albums, 12 of them certified gold. He originally signed to Capitol Records, where he scored several major hits. He moved to Reprise, the imprint formed by pal Frank Sinatra, in its inaugural year and he stayed for 16 years. At that label, he enjoyed 11 Top 40 singles, including Love Songs' gold-seller and #1 smash "Everybody Loves Somebody," "I Will" (#10) and "Somewhere There's A Someone" (#32).
On Love Songs, Martin's unique combination of carefree charm and late night intimacy infuses such classics as "Besame Mucho," "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)," "I Don't Know Why (I Just Do)," "I'll Be Seeing You," "You'll Always Be The One I Love" and "Release Me." Also on board are vintage gems "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" (from the album spun off from the enormously successful "The Dean Martin TV Show") and "The Glory Of Love" from the soundtrack to the film The Silencers, one of the spy spoofs that starred Martin as Matt Helm. Rounding the album out are the pop hits "For Once In My Life," "For The Good Times" and "You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want To Do It)" on Dean Martin - Love Songs.

A license to smile at the Registry of Motor Vehicles
Susan Flynn
The customer isn't sure what to make of Sue O'Neil, the smiling woman who greets her at the front desk of the Registry of Motor Vehicles and doles out an answer before she finishes the question. In rapid-fire succession, she gives her a form, instructions, a number and then a compliment.
"Honey, I love that hat," she tells the lady as she walks toward a bench in an Eskimo-style number rimmed with fur. "That's a great look on you."
If there's any place that could benefit from a bubbly personality, it is here, the Registry of Motor Vehicles, a room perhaps with more dour-looking faces per square inch than anywhere in America. It's still — despite efforts to improve its image — the place people love to hate.
That's why O'Neil, the Beverly branch manager who has worked for the Registry for 37 years, likes to surprise, even disarm, people with her sense of humor.
When waits are long, as they often are, she may bring out her Dean Martin doll, which sings "Everybody Loves Somebody." When a customer comes to renew a license, she makes a point to wish them "Happy birthday." When people arrive for a license suspension hearing, she tells them, in a fake English accent, to go sit on the "naughty bench."
And that's why, when she calls out No. 122, and a customer walks over to the window and orders a pound of roast beef, she laughs, even though the same joke has been told 100 times before.
"I always act like it's the first time I ever heard it," she says.
The Beverly office is understaffed. The parking is a pain. She understands that people get frustrated waiting, so she tries to be patient and urges her staff to do the same. She's not a graduate of Dracula's finishing school, as some suggest.
Sometimes, though, it's hard to stay nice when people are calling you names, really despicable things, in front of kids and senior citizens waiting nearby.
The 55-year-old mother and grandmother has been sworn at more times than a baseball umpire. Just last week, a woman promised to call the governor's office because she was so angry. One guy kicked her bench. Another guy slammed her door.
One time, a customer got so belligerent he insisted that O'Neil call the police to register her extra-long fingernails as weapons. He claimed they were dangerous and just wouldn't drop it.
"That was the first time I called the police on myself," she quips.
One day, she asked an elderly customer for her pink slip.
"I'm not wearing one," the woman replied.
She is most proud of her efforts to collect toys for needy kids at Christmas and sees how the campaign can bring out the best in people. Last year, the Beverly office brought in 850 toys, and they were able to buy 53 bikes with the money they raised.
O'Neil's father, now 91, also worked for the Registry. Back when she was in her 20s, he encouraged her to apply. She's glad she took his advice.
"It's stressful, but I actually do love what I do," she says.
Long ago, her father also told her something she never forgot, a nugget that sustains her on bad days at the office, and in life in general.
"What bothers you today," he said, "isn't going to bother you tomorrow."
Good advice for the people behind — and in front of — the counter.

DEAN MARTIN’S MOST ROMANTIC LOVE SONGS COLLECTED FOR ‘AMORE’
New CD & Digital Collection to be Released January 27 by Capitol/EMI
Hollywood, California – December 11, 2008 - Dean Martin’s most romantic love songs have been gathered for a mood-setting collection, Amore, to be released January 27 by Capitol/EMI, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Amore features 15 classics, including “You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Loves You,” “Just In Time,” “That’s Amore,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face” and “Dream A Little Dream Of Me.”
For Dean Martin, singing came as naturally as breathing. Supple and warm, his vocals dance from breath to word as gracefully as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers gliding in perfect step across the parquetry. Effortlessly cool and dynamic in his life and career, Martin’s performances showcased his trademark style of casual, easy charm. His timeless love songs remain universal favorites and perfect accompaniments to any romantic occasion.
Martin’s velvet voice provided his entry into show business, when he began singing professionally in Ohio’s ballrooms. He built a loyal following and moved on to the supper clubs and cabarets of New York City, before moving to Los Angeles and signing with Capitol Records. Martin’s meteoric rise to fame made him a big-screen draw and landed him acclaimed roles alongside film legends, including John Wayne and Marlon Brando.
Dean Martin is recognized as one of the 20th Century’s greatest entertainers for his decades of hit recordings, films, TV shows and stage performances. For more information, visit www.deanmartin.com.

Live, from Merrimack, it's Dreamtime blog and podcast
By RICK DUMONT Correspondent
On the net:
Dreamtime blog and podcast:
MERRIMACK – The vast and seemingly limitless expanse of the Internet is growing increasingly flush with writers of all levels of talent – the bloggers.
Many of those write daily missives for friends and others who might stumble across the site. Others act as news organizations attempting to break stories before the traditional media. Still others offer their opinions on anything important to the writer.
Fred Bals is one of those bloggers. The 56-year-old Merrimack resident, though, has taken a different approach than many with his Dreamtime blog and podcast programs. He is a dutiful follower of Bob Dylan's satellite radio show "Theme Time Radio Hour," and, for the past two years, Bals has extrapolated upon various points raised by Dylan during his shows and carved out his own niche in cyberspace that has been growing in popularity and achieving attention from the more traditional national media outlets.
Inspired by a comment he heard Dylan mention offhand (or seemingly so) that Elvis wanted to be Dean Martin before being "discovered," Bals went about researching and looking for the truth in that comment.
"I didn't know that," Bals said. But after doing some "digging around" Bals found out that in fact Presley had wanted to be Dean Martin and had originally molded himself in the Rat Packer's image. But feeling that image wouldn't be marketable, Elvis' handlers molded him into what he became, Bals said.
"I thought it was a fascinating story," that was most likely unknown by most people, Bals said.
But what to do with this information? Bals, being a tech-business writer working freelance for a number of companies, decided to try his hand at creative writing and post his findings on a blog site. And thus, another blogger was birthed.
Over the years, Bals has taken a variety of tidbits of information Dylan has let out, researched the items and posted them on his site and formed a monthly podcast as well.
"I'm a very big Dylan fan," Bals said. "But we are also into the same music," which ranges from 1920s-'50s.
"He likes to give basic trivia about various pieces of music," which became the format for Bals' own esoteric historical blogsite.
While Dylan appears to be modeling his radio show after his hero, Woody Guthrie, who once had his own show, Bals is expanding upon his hero's incredible wealth of obscure musical knowledge.
Each of Dylan's shows are themed around a certain subject or style of music, and between songs, none of which are his own, Dylan talks to his audience.
"Buried beneath those comments are usually great stories nobody's ever heard," Bals said.
Other items of note that Bals has culled from the show to write about have been such things like comedian Phil Silvers having been responsible for writing the Frank Sinatra classic "Nancy," which was written about Sinatra's daughter. Or that vaudevillian comedian Morey Amsterdam, most famous for his role of Buddy Sorell on the "Dick Van Dyke Show," wrote the Andrew Sisters hit "Rum and Coca-Cola."
One of Bals' most responded to blogs was about the keyboard master Jerry Lee Lewis' involvement in a rock opera version of Shakespeare's "Othello."
"A lot of Jerry Lee Lewis fans (wrote him) saying why the hell did he do that?" Bals said.
What started out as simply an enjoyable hobby has now become a viable money-making venture for Bals. Though he said he doesn't make enough to "quit my day job." But it is self-sustaining and has gained the notice of some pretty heavy organizations in media. Blas said several of his blogs have been linked to by National Public Radio, the New York radio station WFNU and the Norwegian based Web site on everything Bob Dylan. This past September, writers from the venerable rock music magazine Rolling Stone got in touch with Bals and did a write up on his programs.
Popularity is "always appreciated," Bals said. His site receives about 5,000 hits a week, but really he does it for himself. It's an escape from the tedium of technical business writing, he said.
"I can do anything I want to, it's very relaxing," Bals said. "I'd probably be doing it if nobody went to the site."
Even with all this notoriety bubbling around his site, Bals said he has yet to hear from Dylan or his people.
"I have no idea whether he listens or reads (anything on the site)," Bals said. "I just hope if he stumbles across my blog, I hope he enjoys it."
Bals airs his podcast once a month and updates his blog as interesting items come to light.
The writer said he will keep doing his work as long as Dylan continues to do the radio show.
"It appears as though he's still enjoying himself," Bals said. But when the end comes, Bals said he has "a couple of ideas" as follow-ups.

Dino/Mob
" ... A biography on Martin titled Dean Martin: King of the Road by Michael Freedland alleges he had links to the Mafia early in his career. Martin allegedly was given help with his singing career by mob bosses who owned saloons in Chicago, Illinois. In return, he later performed in shows hosted by these bosses when he was a star. The mob bosses were Tony Accardo and Sam Giancana. The author suggests Martin felt little sympathy for the Mafia and only did them small favors if it was not inconvenient for him. Reportedly, the FBI's bugs once picked up a mafioso making plans to injure or even kill Martin because of a perceived lack of gratitude. Another book, The Animal in Hollywood by John L. Smith, depicted Dean Martin's longtime friendship with Mafia mobsters Johnny Roselli and Anthony Fiato. The author suggests Anthony Fiato (a/k/a "the Animal") did Dean Martin many favors, such as getting back money from two swindlers who had cheated Betty Martin, Dean's ex-wife, out of thousands of dollars of her alimony. ... "The Animal"
" ... I went to work for Dago Louie and Johnny Roselli became my good friend after I did him a solid. Dean Martin went to Johnny for a favor. His ex wife Betty, who was a lush, was cheated out of her alimony money by two swindlers. One of them was a hitman named Pat LaPrieda. Johnny gave the order to Dago Louie who gave the order to me. It’s that easy. When you are in the Mafia High Command, you press a button, and it gets done. I was the doer and I got the cash back. Dean was grateful to me and I had earned Johnny’s affection and respect.
Over the years, I got a button and bossed a crew in the Los Angeles Crime Family.
I even took over as the acting boss in Mobster Mike Rizzitelo’s crew, which was a faction of the Gambino Crime family operating in Los Angeles. My nickname was Tony “The Animal”. At least it sounded better than Tony ”The Molester”….

Dino's Patron Tony Accardo (and Sam Giancana)
"Tony Accardo was born on April 28, 1906. His family migrated from Palermo, Sicily to the Little Sicily area of Chicago. He started as a common street burglar, involved mostly in petty larceny. He came to the attention of Vincenzo de Mora(also known as "Machine Gun" Jack Mcgurn). Accardo joined the Circus Gang, working his way up the ladder of minor league organized crime. He became a member of Capone's Gang after he succesfully planned and executed the Hanlon Hellcat shootout. Tony became Capone's bodygaurd. Accordo continued his upward climb under Capone, he gained stature and trust by everyone in the outfit. When Nitti took over, Tony was put in charge of the very prosperous gambling facit of the Outfit. Then after Nitti's suicide and the Hollywood Extortion Case, Accordo became the boss. Under Accordo the Outift prospered. He enforced a city-wide street tax, which ordered that the Outfit get a percentage of any money made illegally. His greatest Move was to Vegas. Accordo made his move to Las Vagas in the form of the Stardust Casino. The Stardust catered to the blue collar gamblers, it was a gold mine for the Outfit. In 1957 Tony decided that he needed to retire and live his life stress free. Accardo decided to become the consiglieri and give control of the day-to-day operations to Sam Giancana. This arrangement worked for a few years until Giancana started to get too bold and loud for the position he held. Accordo dethroned Giancana thereby giving himself a more active role in the decision making ( which he didn't like). Accordo continued to play an active role in all Outfit moves. He would never spend a day in jail and a attempt on his life was never made. That is the mark of a great Boss. Yet on May 22, 1992 Tony Accordo died of heart problems, and was buried just three blocks from where he grew up."

Book Reveals Dean Martin's Mob Links
news.bbc.co.uk
Many of Martin's hits remain popular today
A new biography of Dean Martin has revealed the late singer's links to the mafia, through files collected by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Martin was given help with his early singing career by mob bosses who owned saloons in Chicago, according to Michael Freedland's book Dean Martin: King Of The Road.
The singer, whose hits included That's Amore and Volare, subsequently repaid them by performing on demand when he became a major star.
"Unlike other people, he knew to say 'thankyou' afterwards," Freedland told BBC World Service's The Music Biz programme.
"If Sam Giancana, the real godfather of Chicago, decided he wanted to put on a show - and this is borne out by FBI files that I saw - he would say, 'get Dean Martin, I need him for 10 days.' And he would go.
"But he could have got himself into very serious trouble."
Insecurities
Many singers at the time were believed to have had connections to the mob.
Frank Sinatra, the most high-profile of the so-called "rat pack" of singing stars that also included Martin and Sammy Davis Jr, was long suspected of involvement - although he denied this up until his death in 1998.
But Freedland said that often, the FBI would turn up at Martin's concerts to observe who was there - as there was a guarantee of tracking down many with links to the mob.
He quoted Martin as saying that at one performance at Atlantic City, "if somebody threw a bomb into the building on that day, organised crime would be wiped out in one moment."
"That shows you - they were all there," Freedland said. ...

Our Dino, the Sam and frankie: Inaugural Ball 1961
Hey pallies, likes my admiration for our Dino continues to grow daily. Yesterday I Dinoreported how our Dino was so angered by the dis-invite by JFK to the Sam to the 1961 Inaugural bash that our great man refused to go and perform himself. Our Dino knew racial prejudice when he saw it...and he took his valiant stand against racism....supporting his pallie Sam. Well pallies, as I was workin' on that Dinostory, I couldn't help but wonder where did the frankie stand on this matter....so I did a bit of internet research. Turns out that JFK put the frankie in charge of intertainment for that bash....so did the frankie follow our Dino's lead and bow out in respect to the Sam? Sorry to say pallies, the answer is no....frankie was at the event front and center...and as you will see was photographed with the new President. So, while our great man took his stand and showed true palliedom to the Sam...and stood up again racism...the frankie just went on with the show...makes you wonder if our Dino's action caused a riff between himself and the frankie...buts we know who done right in this situation.
The Dinopix that I had hoped to share yesterday of a stellar moment of our Dino and the Sam from the Dinoshow (so wish that Dinoclip was still available on youtube) is at the top of this Dinopost and the pix below of the frankie is proof of where he was and what he was doin' on the night of the 1961 Inaugural Ball. Perhaps those of you who mighta thought that I was too harsh on the frankie before will now better understand why only Dino truly matters. Dinodevotedly, DMP

1961- Frank Sinatra¹s Ratpack had campaigned hard for their friend John F. Kennedy for president. Black entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. had worked particularly hard to help Kennedy win the African American vote. But Sammy had a preference for blond white actresses and had married one, May Britt in 1960. To fend off negative publicity this day JFK had his secretary Mrs. Lincoln telephone Sammy Davis and un-invite him to the President¹s Inaugural Ball. We¹re Liberal, but not that liberal. And uhh..thanks for the help. Dean Martin was so angry at this insult to his friend that he cancelled his appearance at the inaugural. In 1968 Sammy Davis angered the black community when he embraced republican Richard Nixon.

In 1968 Sammy Davis angered the black community when he embraced republican Richard Nixon.

... is this funny rendition of You're Nobody 'til Somebody Loves You. Watching it makes you wish you could have seen Martin and Lewis before they hit Hollywood. Dean is a genuinely funny guy. I can only imagine what their improv was like when they were together on stage.

When singers Dean Martin and Sonny King were first starting out, they had little money. They would go to a restaurant that served 2 donuts, coffee, and orange juice for a nickel.
Sonny stayed outside while Dean ate one donut, half the coffee and juice. Then Sonny would go in and say, Hey Dean, youve got an important call. Dean would say, Okay, why dont you finish my breakfast. which Sonny did.
After doing this several times, the manager caught on and said, Hey, you guys dont have to do this. Just come in together and Ill serve you both for a nickel. You can pay me back sometime in the future.
Years later, Dean and Sonny searched for the manager and gave him $25,000 each.
A nice story, with many morals, for the new year.
